Firefly creator Joss Whedon may have fallen from grace after the serious accusations against him, but his creative genius in the Western space show won over many fans. While the ratings of the show during its run did not do justice to its quality, it only rose in popularity in the following 23 years. A key detail about the cast speaks volumes about Whedon’s work.
The stars of the show, Nathan Fillion, Morena Baccarin, Gina Torres, and Alan Tudyk, have all gone on to build great careers in successful sci-fi projects. It meant that the 2002 show could’ve gone places if Fox provided favorable conditions for its run. Sadly, the cult show didn’t get enough support from Fox from the get-go.

Before it became a cult favorite, Firefly became one of the greatest “what could’ve been.” The show was trying to tell stories from a galaxy far, far away before it got brutally axed. Created by Joss Whedon, Firefly premiered in 2002 and introduced viewers to the ragtag crew of the spaceship Serenity, navigating life on the fringes of a dystopian future. It had that gritty western-in-space vibe, blending shootouts with philosophical musings while flying under mainstream attention’s radar.
The cast was stacked as well. From Nathan Fillion as the charming and morally gray Captain Mal Reynolds, Gina Torres as the badass second-in-command Zoe, Alan Tudyk as the eccentric pilot Wash, to Summer Glau as the mysterious, psychically gifted River Tam, just to name a few.
So why did a show with solid acting, clever worldbuilding, and a unique tone get axed after just one season? Well… let’s just...

It’s Sad But True: ‘Firefly’ Revival Really Doesn’t Need Nathan Fillion Anymore and That Makes Sense
Fox canceled Nathan Fillion’s Firefly after airing eleven out of its fourteen produced episodes. On paper, Fox couldn’t justify the huge budget of the show with its below-average ratings. Without giving it another chance, Fox decided to pull the plug by airing another hit pilot, Fastlane. However, it didn’t take much longer for fans to figure out that Fox had made a huge mistake.
Fans have been hoping for a revival series since its cancellation. The series got a film continuation, Serenity, which was released 20 years ago in 2005. After all these years, it is high time that we think about a revival without Fillion as the lead. A comic book has already suggested the perfect way that we can replace Fillion’s Malcolm Reynolds with a new captain for Serenity.

Sometimes we can't help but wonder what television channels or streaming services were thinking when canceling a TV show. Viewership and cost are the usual suspects behind why a fan favorite TV show doesn't last as long as it should, but that doesn't mean it was a failure.
We're taking a look back at seven science fiction and fantasy shows that we cancelled way too soon, beginning with a show that everyone can agree on:
Firefly
Fans young and old can agree that Firefly was cancelled too soon, after only one season. Created by Joss Whedon and starring Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Ron Glass, this legendary science fiction show from 2002 has one of the most powerful fan bases on the planet.
Love, action, and humor abound aboard the spaceship Serenity, where our wacky band of space-faring outlaws lived and worked together.

Nathan Fillion’s Firefly had a cancellation in the cards long before the actual news came. The ratings were low despite the fans, who got to see it, loving the space Western. These fans saw the possibility of Fox axing the show and started a campaign to save the show. It was just a sign of what was to come after Fox cancelled the series.
The network didn’t wait to air all of its episodes, instead cancelling the series after airing just eleven out of fourteen produced episodes. Fox immediately replaced it with another crime action series, Fastlane. However, fans soon proved that Fox made a huge mistake.
Once the completed version of Firefly began rebroadcasting, fans flocked in to watch the show. They saw that Joss Whedon had a vision that was unlike anything on TV at the time. The fanbase only grew in number and called themselves the Browncoats.

Alan Tudyk knew that Firefly didn’t stand a chance at Fox even before a single episode aired on television. Tudyk and the rest of the cast were shocked to see the promotional material for the series, which didn’t represent their series at all. Not only did Fox fumble on the promotion of Firefly, but they also gave the series the worst time slot and aired episodes out of order.
The result was that no one bothered to see it and dismissed it as another sci-fi comedy show. However, Firefly was nothing like the other sci-fi shows. It was set 500 years into the future when humans enter into a new star system. The series followed the adventures of a group of misfits aboard the Serenity, a Firefly-class spaceship.

The gone-too-soon category of television series will always have Firefly at its top. The series wasn’t allowed the luxury to run more than a season at Fox. However, the single season of Nathan Fillion’s show went on to gain a cult following for its premise and world-building. While Fillion is still not happy that the series didn’t get the respect it deserved, he might be satisfied with the single season run of the series.

This is a Terminator household. First and foremost. I will argue that T2 is one of the best sequels of all time, even though I don’t feel like I have to do that because everybody knows. There is a debate in this household that Terminator is better than T2, but we don’t have time for that. We are here for The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I’m going to be honest. When I first heard about the show it was one of those things where there was so much talk about it that I was annoyed. So I put off watching it forever. “You gotta watch the Sarah Connor Chronicles, you gotta watch the Sarah Connor Chronicles…”
So I watched it.

Released in 2002, Firefly only lasted one season, but it left a lasting impact on the sci-fi fandom. The series took a character-driven approach, shucking robust special and practical effects and focusing on the story. Like other Joss Whedon projects, the series also brought a witty and quick script that endeared many viewers to the crew aboard the Serenity.
Firefly refused to dumb itself down and instead focused on building its world around memorable, relatable characters. Decades after its release, fans still look fondly at the characters, their memorable lines, and the made-up lingo that was so 'gorram shiny' to repeat. Still, with so much time past, it does not hurt to give oneself a refresher on the cast of Firefly, either for nostalgia's sake or as a primer for jumping back in.

When a beloved TV show is canceled after just one season, it's a disappointing outcome. While every TV series risks cancelation no matter what, it always comes as a shock when a genuinely good show is struck down before it has the chance to establish itself. From overlooked crime TV shows that only lasted one season to short-lived comedies, no TV genre is safe from the dreaded cancelation after just one outing. For many of these series, as time has progressed, critical and audience reception has further proved they should've gone on for longer.
All of these TV shows were canceled too soon for a variety of reasons, but most of the reasoning comes down to numbers. Whether they were too expensive to produce or didn't garner enough viewership, the networks and streamers behind these shows determined that the risk of production wasn't worth the reward. However, this doesn't take...

Among the most diverse and interesting genres in fiction, Sci-Fi can deliver wonderful narratives that go beyond the limits of imagination and reflect on humanity & culture, as well as offer expansive works of art throughout the entertainment industry. Within the landscape of sci-fi television, numerous shows have become a staple of pop culture while also highlighting exciting stories that resonate with fans. Moreover, the best kind of sci-fi television show lays out its world with a strong foundation in narrative execution.
As many television shows lose direction in keeping up with quality, sci-fi has the especially difficult task of having something new to say while also pleasing loyal fans. Whether capturing lightning in a bottle or having great material to work off of, the top sci-fi shows introduce a journey to the audience and, throughout a series’ run, maintain a flawless string of episodes that always keeps people coming back to relive the experience.

People don't talk much about "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" these days. Maybe that's because it only lasted two seasons, the first of which was truncated to just nine episodes due to the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike. Or maybe it was just an early sign of what later "Terminator" movies like "Salvation" and "Genisys" seemed to prove -- that in the wake of James Cameron leaving the franchise and the '80s aesthetic that once defined it dropping off, "Terminator" just wasn't that big of a hit anymore.
The shame, of course, is that "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" is actually pretty solid, unlike the aforementioned films. You'd think that after "Game of Thrones" made Lena Headey a global superstar, fans would be interested in going back and revisiting the high-concept sci-fi show she headlined just a few years before being cast as Cersei Lannister. Summer Glau also co-starred in the series,...

The cast of the space Western series Firefly is reuniting to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the continuation film Serenity. Joss Whedon’s cult sci-fi series followed Captain Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and his ragtag crew aboard the spaceship Serenity as they navigated life on the dark fringes of space. There's definitely a sweet spot when it comes to how long a TV series should run. Some go on seemingly forever until they're shallow visages of what they used to be. Then, there are the shows that displayed a ton of promise in just a few episodes but got canceled for one reason or another. When it comes to the latter, you know exactly what we're talking about. Perhaps you were even part of a fan campaign to try to bring one of the following shows back on the air. Sadly, the whims of studio executives know no mercy, even when a show ends on a massive cliffhanger that'll no longer get any resolution.
These are the shows that broke all of our hearts. These series canceled after one season managed to get us invested so quickly, and now, we're left to wonder what might've been had more people tuned in initially.

Even when a series lasts for a relatively short period of time, it can produce a lasting legacy that goes on years after its finale. This became the case with Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which only ran for two seasons and 31 episodes from 2008-2009. The series was a spin-off of the Terminator films, picking up after the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day. While never a ratings hit, it did have a loyal fan base that campaigned for the show's Season 3 return before the network ultimately pulled the plug. Now, over 15 years since the series last aired, creator John Friedman is reflecting on the cancelation and whether he was satisfied with its conclusion.
During a chat with Empire, Friedman was asked if he was prepared for the show's cancelation and, even though he knew more stories could be told, the Season 2 finale was written in a way that could...

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles creator Josh Friedman has reflected on the sci-fi show's cancellation 15 years later, revealing the John Connor storyline that would have happened if it was renewed for season 3. The TV show follow-up to Terminator 2: Judgement Day sees Sarah (Lena Heady) and her son John (Thomas Dekker) trying to prevent the rise of SkyNet once again, this time with the help of the Terminator Cameron (Summer Glau), who John sent back in time to protect himself. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles was the Terminator franchise's detour to the small screen, but for fans of the show, it was far too short-lived. After running for two seasons from 2008 to 2009, Fox canceled the series, this despite positive reviews and a fan campaign for a renewal.
In a new interview with Empire, series creator Josh Friedman opened up on all things Sarah Connor Chronicles. The writer, who has more recently worked on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, shared his thoughts on Fox canceling the show. Friedman explained how he knew there was a chance the series wouldn't get renewed, so Season 2 was written in a way that could potentially serve as the finale. With that said, the writer was also hoping that the show would go on, and it was saddening when it was made officially that The Sarah Connor Chronicles had been given the boot.

Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles Creator Josh Friedman On James Cameron, Cancer, And Cancellation
Sarah Connor was dead. Or was she? Well, yes, according to 2003’s Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines – but death can’t compete with TV. It was 2006 when Josh Friedman, who had co-written Steven Spielberg’s War Of The Worlds, was approached by Warner Bros. Television to write what would become The Sarah Connor Chronicles. A series picking up from where James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day left off, it followed Sarah (Lena Headey) and her prodigious son John (Thomas Dekker) as they, along with Cameron (Summer Glau), a protector Terminator, continued to battle Skynet and evade murderous cyborg stalkers. Launching in January 2008, it enjoyed two seasons until it was, in April 2009, abruptly… well, terminated.
Fifteen years on, we speak to Friedman about legacy, cancer, and Shirley Manson disguised as a urinal.

Ive always loved Firefly and felt that it deserved a much longer run, but this detail about the shows iconic cast is a reminder that this short-lived sci-fi western series had so much wasted potential. Joss Whedon took Gene Roddenberrys famous original pitch for Star Trek Wagon Train to the stars to its literal conclusion with Fireflys tale of gunslingers traversing the final frontier. Firefly ran for just one season, consisting of 14 episodes, back in 2002, and its frequently included on lists of TV shows that were canceled much too soon.
Firefly had limitless potential, and its one and only season just scratched the surface of that potential. It had a juicy premise, bringing the pioneer culture of the Old West to a dystopian future in need of a new world order, and it had an ensemble of colorful characters whose stories had only just gotten started when the show was axed by Fox.

Give TV shows a chance to grow beyond the first seasonmany become beloved later on. Series cancellations can happen due to factors out of the creators' control, disappointing fans. Some shows have potential for growth beyond one season, leaving fans longing for more.
It's not fair to judge a TV show after just one season, as there are very few series that peak in season 1. I'm always wary of a show that's too good at the very beginning because there's less room for improvement and a good chance that the quality will decrease as the years progress. However, I can think of many TV shows where the first season is the worst, but they all had the chance to learn from their missteps and grow into stories beloved by audiences, including myself. Every show deserves the opportunity to succeed or fail.

The Sarah Connor Chronicles introduced a more advanced Terminator model, Cameron, with social capabilities and emotions fitting for a TV series. Cameron's unique abilities, like eating and emotions, made her more relatable and helped sustain the series over multiple episodes. The fate of Cameron was left open-ended at the end of the series, with her processor chip taken to the future, leaving her return a possibility.
The Sarah Connor Chronicles introduced many new aspects of Terminator lore, including the arrival of the series' most advanced model yet seen. The show was the Terminator franchise's only attempt at a television series, centering around Sarah Connor as portrayed by Lena Headey in the aftermath of Terminator 2. She was joined by Summer Glau's Cameron, a terminator sent back to protect John Connor. It was the typical Terminator setup, with the twist that Cameron blended in far better than any Terminator audiences had seen before or since.

Warrior is a martial arts action crime drama series created by Jonathan Tropper. Based on the writings of the legendary Bruce Lee, the Max series is set during the Tong Wars in late 1870s San Francisco, and it follows the story of Ah Sahm (Andrew Koji), a Chinese immigrant who comes to America to find her sister. Warrior was canceled after its much-beloved third season, and while the creators and producers of the series are trying to find a new home for the series, their efforts haven’t panned out yet. So, if you are also disappointed because of the cancellation of Warrior, here are some similar shows you could watch next.

David Newman's score for the Firefly follow-up movie Serenity is now available for pre-order on vinyl. Screen Rant interviewed Newman about his work on the movie. Newman reflects on the challenges of creating the score for the film, showcasing his innovative approach to musical storytelling.
The 2005 sci-fi film Serenity had to strike an impossible balance, both catering to the exceptionally dedicated cult following of a one-season TV show while still welcoming moviegoers who had no idea what Firefly was. Creatively, it succeeded, but underwhelming box office numbers quieted talks of a sequel. Nearly 20 years later, and the cast of that moviepeople like Nathan Fillion (The Rookie), Morena Baccarin (Deadpool), Summer Glau (Arrow), and Gina Torres (Suits)are still regularly asked if, when, and how they will reprise their roles.
It's somewhat on brand, then, that composer David Newmans score for the movie is finally making it to vinyl courtesy of Varse Sarabande.

Fox aired the pilot episode of Firefly 11th despite its importance for character development, hurting the show's success. Firefly's correct episode order captivated audiences and led to the creation of the movie Serenity. Firefly was unjustly canceled by Fox, but its proper episode order can still be enjoyed on platforms like Hulu.
Firefly was canceled after only 10 episodes had aired, and it was Fox's ridiculous decision before the premiere that doomed the science fiction series. Created by Joss Whedon, Firefly became a cult classic years after it was taken off the air, making its cancelation a sore spot that will never entirely heal. To make matters worse, the TV show was never given a fair shot since Fox stuck its hands in and ruined its chances of building a solid audience base with the pilot.

Terminator franchise needs to go back to TV for a chance at redemption. Movies have failed to match the epic scale of T2. A Terminator TV series could tell a small-scale, slasher-type story while exploring complex sci-fi elements and character development. The Sarah Connor Chronicles proved that Terminator can thrive on television, allowing actors to truly shine in their roles.
James Cameron has announced that he’s working on Terminator 7, but a different Terminator project would be a better way to save the franchise. The central theme of the Terminator series – the threat of sentient A.I. and its ability to destroy humanity – is more relevant today than ever before. It’s the perfect time to tell a new Terminator story. But a seventh feature-length installment in a franchise that hasn’t had a great movie since its second entry might not be the best way to tell that story.

Ever since Disney acquired Fox, the internet has been abuzz with rumors of various reboots and revivals of their old properties. Some rumors suggest that a Firefly reboot is finally on the way, but the original creator of the show, Joss Whedon, would likely not be a part of the project due to multiple allegations. Firefly is a space western set in the year 2517 when a veteran on the losing side of an interplanetary civil war becomes a smuggler and seeks to keep himself and his crew off the government's radar. It originally only ran one season, but thanks to vocal fan support, Serenity (the feature film sequel to the series) tied up the show's loose ends.
Disney itself has never officially announced a Firefly revival project for either Disney+ or Hulu, so this is all hypothetical. There remains a cult following for the single-season show. The chance of any Firefly,...

It lasted only one season, but fans still mourn the demise of the sci-fi/western Firefly. As much as we love watching (and rewatching) the series, sometimes it's not enough.
Are you longing for a little more Captain Tight Pants? Want to see Zoe quietly kick some adversary's butt? Wishing you could revisit the Hero of Canton?
Well, we can't bring back Firefly -- oh, how we wish we could! -- but we can tell you where you can tune in to see the cast now.
If you can't get enough of the crew of the Serenity, read on to find out where you can see them now.

Shepherd Book was the preacher with a cryptic past who boards the Serenity and befriends its crew. We loved Book's warmth and acceptance of his other crew members while still being able to hold onto his faith.

Firefly, the sci-fi series that premiered 21 years ago, made a huge impact on fans and stars, prompting Nathan Fillion to share a souvenir from the set. Fillion, who played Mal Reynolds on the show, revealed his character's famous sidearm and asked fans to share their Firefly fandom, including cosplay and tattoos. While Firefly never got a second season, Fillion is set to join the Dcu franchise as Guy Gardner aka Green Lantern, giving justice to a popular character on the big screen.
It's been 21 years since Firefly premiered, and even though the sci-fi series only managed to last one season, its impact was huge, both in the lives of the fans and its stars. That's why Nathan Fillion still has a souvenir to remember the series.

Terminator 7 can breathe new life into the franchise by exploring the perspective of the Terminators themselves, an angle not previously explored in the series. Terminator: Genysis and Terminator: Dark Fate started to tap into the minds of the Terminators, showcasing their potential for growth and emotional development beyond what T2 had done. Terminator 7 has the opportunity to fully humanize the Terminators and reinvent the franchise with a story told from the perspective of the machines.
Terminator 7 could revive the Terminator franchise by looking to a key element of Terminator: Genysis and Terminator: Dark Fate. The Terminator movies were once some of the hottest action and sci-fi movies around with the franchise's first two installments, with 1991's Terminator 2: Judgment Day standing as the franchise's peak. However, subsequent Terminator movies have failed to recapture the success of the original, with Terminator: Dark Fate unfortunately bombing in 2019.

More than 20 years since the show ended, any Firefly season 2 news gets fans excited about the return of a beloved show canceled too soon. When Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel were still on the air, Joss Whedon created a new series with Firefly running for one season on Fox in 2002. But Firefly was unrelated to the world of magic and vampires; taking place in 2517, the show chronicled the adventures of Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and his crew aboard the Serenity, a small transport spaceship on the outskirts of the galaxy after Mal lost a civil war.
Sadly, the show never found an audience during its original run and Firefly was canceled after only one season. But the show would become a cult hit through DVD and streaming viewers, and even spawned a follow-up film, Serenity, in 2005, and multiple comic book series to round out the story. While a reboot isn't guaranteed, Disney+ obtained the rights to Firefly when they acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019 as part of a multi-billion dollar merger.
Since early 2021, when initial reports of Disney+ doing a Firefly revival first surfaced, fans and enthusiasts have speculated what the crew of Serenity could look like twenty years later.
What Made Firefly Unique
The primary relationships onboard the Serenity were more like siblings or friends, pairs linked by bonds of guilt, yearning, and mutual betrayal. Joss Whedon surrounded these crazy friends with drama involving a measure of mutual parenting, or at least the sense of needing to rescue one another from the diabolical emptiness of cold space. This may be typical of the difference between the post-boomer generation of which Whedon was a part, and Joss's own – the Generation X-ers, who were detached from their 'Boomer' Star Trek predecessors.

With so many franchises releasing late sequels, having reboots or going through revivals, fans of the sci-fi series Firefly continue to hold out hope for a possible second season for the show that was canceled after a single installment by Fox.
Almost 20 years after its premiere and finale, the production created by Joss Whedon has become a cult hit for fans of the genre, who are waiting for a miraculous late renewal for a second season even when a movie was made after the first one. But one of the main stars doesn’t see that happening.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" was a bittersweet movie. It will be the last time we'll see all these characters united, but not to fret. If you're in the mood for a story about misfits flying around from adventure to adventure in a starship, you're blessed with possibilities.
"Firefly," the cult classic space western by "The Avengers" director Joss Whedon, is an obvious one -- its influence hangs over the "Guardians" films. "Firefly," though, owed its own debts to past science fiction. There's a persistent rumor that the image of the naked River Tam (Summer Glau) in a box was taken from a nearly identical shot in a 1998 anime. The anime in question? "Outlaw Star."
Set in the far future when mankind has colonized the stars, our lead is Gene Starwind, who dreams of traveling space yet has been grounded since his father died in a pirate attack years prior.

Fans who watched "Firefly" when it aired on Fox for its one and only season must feel really justified these days. The network aired the episodes out of order and canceled the show before the entire season had aired, and yet its appeal is undimmed all these years later. Watching it now, it's almost comical how they could have missed how brilliant the series was. Sure, there are some things in the 2002 space Western that didn't age well, including the alleged actions of its creator Joss Whedon. Still, it created a whole new version of the quippy patter conversation style that went beyond what Whedon's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" gave us.
The show has gained cult status over the years, with fans called Browncoats gathering at conventions some two decades after "Firefly" premiered and the release of the 2005 film "Serenity," which essentially served as the series' second season. "Firefly" references...

December 20 marks a dark anniversary for sci-fi fans. On that day in 2002, Fox aired its last episode of Firefly — which, due to scheduling shenanigans on the network’s part, was the pilot episode of the series. Created by Joss Whedon, Firefly was a spacefaring Western about the crew of the Firefly-class vessel Serenity as they eked out a living on the fringes of an Alliance-controlled star system. “When I pitched the show, I said this is about nine people looking into the blackness of space and seeing nine different things,” Whedon told reporters in 2002. Those nine people were captain Mal (Nathan Fillion), lieutenant Zoe (Gina Torres), pilot Wash (Alan Tudyk), companion-for-hire Inara (Morena Baccarin), mercenary Jayne (Adam Baldwin), mechanic Kaylee (Jewel Staite), surgeon Simon (Sean Maher), child prodigy River (Summer Glau), and religious sage Book (Ron Glass). The show, given a Friday-night death slot, was practically doomed from the start,...

Though writer-director Joss Whedon may not be who we thought he was, there is no question that his television shows remain widely loved and celebrated. This is especially true of the imaginative sci-fi Western "Firefly," which aired for only 11 glorious episodes in 2002. Most fans wouldn't see the remaining three episodes until the series came out on DVD in 2004. Fox bungled this one, pure and simple.
Fans mourn what might've been the way Independents look back on the Unification War, but there's no profit to be had in wishing things were different. "Firefly" gave us 14 wonderful episodes before flying off quietly into that good night. At least there was a form of closure in the 2005 film "Serenity," and the story goes on in a series of graphic novels. As the theme song says, "You can't take the sky from me."
With that in mind, this piece means to sort the wheat from the chaff.

It's difficult sometimes to know when something is over. Much like relationships, TV shows can wear out their welcome, taking too long to realize that it's time to say goodbye. Other series are cut down in their prime, stopped before they could even truly get started, with their potential never fully realized. "Firefly" is an example of the latter, just another casualty of Fox's itchy trigger finger, canceled after only 11 of its 14 episodes had aired back in 2002. Centering on a motley crew of smugglers traveling the 'Verse in the spaceship Serenity, no one could've predicted the space Western would gain any traction through DVD sales, let alone enough to warrant a feature film continuation. Even after the 2005 release of "Serenity," viewers still hoped for more and "Firefly" has enjoyed a rich life beyond television in both comics and novels.

"Firefly" broke a naming pattern. Creator Joss Whedon's previous TV series were named for their protagonists: "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and "Angel." "Firefly," on the other hand, is named for its setting; the Firefly-class spaceship Serenity. The ship itself is the main character since it's the glue that holds all of the cast together.
Whereas "Buffy" was a hero's journey, "Firefly" is an ensemble. The supporting characters are as important as Serenity's captain, Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion). According to Adam Baldwin, who played the crude mercenary Jayne Cobb, there not being a single main character also meant none of the cast had the extra job security a lead actor usually does.
Adam Baldwin Explains The Title
"Joss Whedon: The Biography" by Amy Pascale features a quote from Baldwin, recalling what Whedon told the cast at the outset of the series: "You're all expendable. If I choose, you can go at any time.

With only 14 episodes to its name, "Firefly" had time to realize just a fraction of its creators' ideas. Since its cancellation, the show's actors and writers have discussed many ideas for unmade episodes. Among them is Alan Tudyk, who played Hoban "Wash" Washburne, the eccentric but very skilled pilot of the starship Serenity.
Wash never got much backstory during the series' abbreviated run — his full name is never even said aloud. The bulk of his character development, including his sole focus episode "War Stories," centered on his relationship with Zoe (Gina Torres). So, Tudyk took initiative in fleshing out his character. As he's recounted multiple times, he even had an unused idea for what Wash was up to during the Unification War. While his future wife was off fighting the authoritarian Alliance, Wash had a much different experience.

The Joss Whedon TV series "Firefly" ran for a single season on Fox. It never really had a chance for a successful run on network television; the episodes were run out of order, and three were left unaired. Despite this, enough people loved the show and bought the DVD box set that Universal Pictures gave a green light to a follow-up film, "Serenity."
"Firefly" is set hundreds of years in the future, in a world where humans had to leave Earth and colonize space. A “Terminator” anime series has been ordered at Netflix, Variety has learned.
As the project is still in the early stages, plot details are being kept under wraps. Netflix has partnered with Skydance on the series, with Skydance having produced the last two “Terminator” films. The series is produced in partnership with Production I.G , who Netflix has had a production line deal with since 2018. Production I.G’s past anime credits include “Ghost in the Shell,” “B: The Beginning,” and “Eden of the East.”
“’Terminator’ is one of the most iconic sci-fi stories ever created–and has only grown more relevant to our world over time,” said John Derderian, Netflix’s vice president of Japan and anime. “The new animated series will explore this universe in a way that has never been done before. We can’t wait for fans to experience this amazing new chapter in the epic battle between machines and humans.

Rumblings of a Firefly reboot in the works at Disney+ have recently been working their way through the rumor mill, and many fans of the original series are clearly unhappy about the possibility. Created by Joss Whedon, Firefly was perhaps ahead of its time when it premiered on Fox in 2002. It was controversially canceled after a single season, but not without winning an Emmy and developing a large cult following.
This week, the website Giant Freakin Robot published an unconfirmed report that a Firefly reboot was in development at Disney+.
