Starz Launches #TakeTheLead Inclusion Initiative to Amplify Underrepresented Groups
Image
Premium cabler Starz is looking to emphasize its commitment to storytelling about and by underrepresented groups with a new inclusion initiative it is calling #TakeTheLead. The effort will include a monthly series of talks with agencies, guilds and organizations such as the ACLU of Southern California and California Film Commission and conclude with a summit.

The initiative ties into the network’s programming mandate to amplify underrepresented voices, Hirsch told Variety. The talks will take place on a monthly basis, and will be open to the public.

“We thought it was important not only to have talks with outsiders, not just in the industry, but people that can bring perspective on what other industries are doing in the same vein,” he said.

WGA Members Urge Board To Divest From Companies That Support NRA
Ninety-five members of the Writers Guild of America have signed a letter sent to the guild’s board of directors urging that it divest from gun companies and any companies that support the NRA.

The letter, sent to the Board Tuesday, warns “Gun violence enabled by the ready availability of military grade weapons, has become one of the biggest threats to the safety and security of the American people.” The letter continues, “We urge the WGA and the WGA Pension Plan to divest of all stocks of any gun or ammunition manufacturer, and any company that provides material support to the gun industry lobbying organization called The National Rifle Association, whether through donations, deductions or other means (e.g. Federal Express), until such time as sensible national gun reform legislation is passed.”

It is signed by 95 members of both WGA West and WGA East.

Kevin James To Headline Football Drama 44
THR is reporting today that Kevin James is set to headline an upcoming football drama titled 44. Based on the true story of Joey Williams, the film will revolve around the father of four who “returned to college to complete his degree and fulfill a lifelong dream of playing collegiate football. In the process, however, he instead found himself competing alongside his college-aged son at the same university.”

44 is said to be in the vein of The Blind Side, meaning that it will be a feel-good, inspirational tale, and in an interview with NPR, Williams explained his story as such:

I received an injury in high school that kept me from finishing my high school football career. I had a scholarship to a university there in Tennessee, but turned it down, because I was afraid I would have a problem walking in the future, if I ever had another knee injury.
