‘Fake Profile’ (2023) Review: A Flavorless Family Drama With A Hint Of A Telenovela Feel
Image
With the advent of social media and various video format platforms such as YouTube, we have been made privy to something called “telenovelas.” These are Latin television soap operas where the stories are based on over-the-top dramas and theatrics coupled with bad actors hamming their way to glory. The new Columbian Netflix original, Fake Profile, trudges into that territory, and takes no pain to steer clear of it. Directed by Catalina Hernández and Klych López and written by Pablo Illanes, this television show has so much going on that it gets weirdly comical. You must know why this television show is in no mood to slow down.

Fake Profile stars Carolina Miranda and Rodolfo Salas as Camilla and Dr. Fernando Castello, who met on a dating app in Vegas and hit it off since the day they matched. There is a full-blown romance brewing between the two, and within four months of dating,...

A horror and fantasy film festival that brings together both Chilean and international filmmakers, the first-ever Santiago Horror Film Festival will take place in Santiago, Chile starting on October 4th:

"We already know that Chilean films can have international success. But what about the fantasy and horror films made in Chile? To be held in Santiago, Chile, from 4th to 6th October 2018, Santiago Horror will offer a varied agenda of activities. One of the milestones will be the forum "Women in Genre Films", which will feature the participation of actresses Carolina Arredondo and Blanca Lewin, film director Andrea Ozuljevich and writer Francisca Solar. Wide World of Horror: ‘Baby Shower’ – a soap opera pretending to be a horror movie.
Baby Shower

Written by Pablo Illanes

Directed by Pablo Illanes

Chile, 2011

Religious fervor has been exploited by the horror genre for years. There’s not much that can be said in the religious subgenre of horror that hasn’t been said already. That doesn’t mean that the people making horror films should steer clear of that particular subgenre. It does mean that when working within the religious subgenre the onus is on the filmmakers to produce something of a certain quality. It need not be the best horror movie ever made, or rewrite the book on religion as a tool of the horror genre. But, any horror buff worth their salt wants to enjoy the time they spend watching a horror movie. They want to be scared, be wowed by cinematography, have their ears assaulted by ingenious sound effects, and so on and so forth. At the opposite end...

Baby Shower (2011)
FEARnet Movie Review: 'Baby Shower'
Baby Shower (2011)
I caught a festival submission cut of a bizarre but entertaining Chilean horror film called Baby Shower about a year ago, but since I wasn't sure it was a "final cut" (and also because the film festival didn't book it), I put my review on the back burner until it received some sort of American release. It played a few festivals, made no real noise, and is now available not on DVD, but exclusively on Netflix's Instant Watch section. I have no idea if this is a new release structure for low-budget foreign horror films, but the good news is that (at least) Netflix subscribers can enjoy the gore-soaked lunacy that is Pablo Illanes' Baby Shower.

As the title plainly suggests, this is a horror film about a baby shower, but there are serious problems afoot at this particular get-together. The seriously pregnant Angela, for example, has befriended a...

Morbido 2011: Baby Shower Review
Never trust a hippy. That is the core message behind Pablo Illanes' super pulpy and super entertaining slasher film Baby Shower. By blending a plot line that could have been lifted from a latino telenovela with one lifted from the 70s religio-horror movement and laying on copious amounts of blood Illanes proves there is life in the venerable slasher genre yet.Heavily pregnant and deeply troubled, Angela has moved off into the remote countryside outside of Santiago too nurse her wounds and prepare for the arrival of her twins. Her mother recently deceased and her husband conspicuously absent Angela has turned instead to a local spiritual group for support. Appearing to be less a religion than a fusion of meditation and yoga techniques they have...

Trailer For Chilean Slasher Baby Shower
Never trust a hippy. That seems to be the general message of the theatrical trailer for Pablo Illanes' Baby Shower.

The theatrical debut from respected television director Illanes, Baby Shower is also being billed as Chile's first slasher / gore film. And while I think I may know some who would argue that designation it does certainly seem to be a good example of the type. Here's the official synopsis:

Four ex classmates get together to celebrate the pregnancy of one of them, away from the city. The revelation of a dark secret and a series of violent deaths transform the baby shower into a nightmare.

If that leaves any dounts I think the poster art to the left will give a good idea where they're going with this. Check the full theatrical trailer below.
