In Netflix’s first move into big-league sports streaming, the company has won the rights to two NFL games on Christmas Day 2024.

On Dec. 25, 2024, Netflix will be the global home of the NFL’s two Christmas Day games. In addition, the streamer will have at least one holiday game in 2025 and 2026 as part of the three-year deal. The Netflix Christmas Day games will also air on broadcast TV in the competing teams’ cities, and they’ll be available on U.S. mobile devices with NFL+.

Netflix will pay about $150 million total for the Christmas Day games this year ($75 million per game), the Wall Street Journal reported. It’s still Tbd who will produce the games; Netflix declined to comment on that detail.

Netflix has kept its messaging on the addition of more sports rights incredibly consistent throughout the years. Company officials have repeatedly denied that Netflix wants to be a sports streaming platform, but its forays into the field seem to bely those denials to a certain degree. Earlier this year, the world’s largest streamer closed a deal to become the host of “WWE Raw” starting in 2025, and recently announced a live boxing card headlined by Mike Tyson and Jake Paul. Those deals could set the table for Netflix to go after other sports rights in the future and new data released by Ampere Analysis is helping to quantify which sports might be best for Netflix to pursue going forward, and why.

Netflix is expanding its sports content with the new series Receiver featuring four outstanding wide receivers and one tight end. The series continues the streaming service’s partnership with the NFL and is expected to premiere this summer.

“It’s been said that there’s no more difficult position in the NFL than the quarterback,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “But throwing the pass is only half the story. Netflix is moving from quarterbacks to wide receivers and tight ends in its latest NFL docuseries.

The streamer has ordered Receiver from the team behind Quarterback – NFL Films, Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions and Patrick Mahomes’ 2Pm Productions.

The series follows stars such as Las Vegas Raider Davante Adams, Minnesota Viking Justin Jefferson, San Francisco 49ers George Kittle and Deebo Samuel and Detroit Lion Amon-ra St. Brown.

It comes after Netflix last year launched Quarterback starring Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins, then of the Vikings, and Marcus Mariota, then of the Atlanta Falcons. Manning said Netflix had renewed Quarterback for a second season, but admitted that finding subjects was also tricky, hence the pivot to receivers.

The series follows this group throughout the 2023 season, which saw the 49ers beaten in the Super Bowl by the Chiefs.
