Almost a year after the series finale, the creators of the supernatural drama Evil give a candid response to the show's cancellation. The ending of the popular Paramount+ original series leaves the door just open enough for a potential Evil season 5, with Kristen (Katja Herbers) and David (Mike Colter) beginning a new chapter in Rome. But despite acclaim and strong viewership, with its availability on Netflix, the show did not receive a last-minute renewal.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporterto reflect on their recent series, which includes Happy Face and Elsbeth, co-creators Robert and Michelle King reflected on the cancellation of Evil. The creative partners and married duo admit they still wonder about the decision to conclude the story and speculate on why there was no longer a need for the show. Check out their comments below:
Robert King: I don’t f***ing understand why Evil was canceled; I still can’t.

When good shows are suddenly canceled, it's frustrating for the series creators and fans. No matter how well it's doing, in terms of ratings, or social media chatter, it seems like nothing can keep a show safe. Robert and Michelle King are currently taking over popular shows on television and streaming. The husband-and-wife duo are creators and executive producers of series like Evil, Elsbeth, and Happy Face, which have put them at the forefront of winning awards. The supernatural show Evil was critically acclaimed and moved from CBS to Paramount+ in 2021. However, it was sadly canceled in 2024, and its final episode aired in August.
It seems that high praise and consistent viewership are no longer enough to secure a renewal these days. Robert and Michelle talked to The Hollywood Reporter about how they can't wrap their heads around the fact that Evil was canceled.

Emmys odds are in Robert and Michelle King’s favor this season as the husband-and-wife duo have three shows in awards contention. The longtime series creators and executive producers behind Elsbeth, Evil and Happy Face, which are in the running, are no strangers to churning out multiple shows at a time. As Robert tells THR: “It was even harder when we were doing The Good Fight and Evil.”
For the Kings, it’s not the volume of work that causes restless nights, it’s wanting to do more, particularly when it comes to their supernatural drama starring Katja Herbers, Mike Colter and Aasif Mandvi. “I don’t fucking understand why Evil was canceled; I still can’t,” Robert admits of the thriller that premiered on CBS in 2019 before moving to the network’s streaming platform Paramount+ in its second season. “I lay awake at night wondering why it was canceled,...

It was the fall of 2004, and there was nothing like "Lost." While narrative arcs had finally become part of television, helped by sci-fi predecessors like "Babylon 5" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," "Lost" used the technique to make its mark. It starts with a horrifying airplane incident, a passenger jet splitting in half high in the sky. Three years after 9/11, it was a ballsy play. But the survivors awoke in a tropical paradise, where little was as it seemed.
We were gripped by revelations that shocked us: Terry O'Quinn's walkabout turns into an inexplicable miracle, a mysterious signal is picked up, a monster made of smoke lurks at the fringes, and of course, the fateful discovery of the hatch. "Lost" didn't stick the landing as we devoured all six seasons (or maybe it did), with some mysteries turned...

What if someone took a formulaic, yet fun monster-of-the-week approach to a supernatural procedural show, and soaked it in a delightful blend of strange and over-the-top tropes? This might feel a tad predictable — dated, even — when measured against similar story formats made for television, but some shows manage to break all molds while experimenting with the familiar. Robert and Michelle King's "Evil" is one such entity, as it has consistently challenged perceptions and reinvented itself over the course of its four-season run. While one would expect a supernatural series to take a case-per-week approach, "Evil" isn't scared to oscillate between bleak humor and deliberately campy overtones to fuel its fascinating premise. All four seasons of the show is now streaming in full on Paramount+ (with the first three seasons available on Netflix).

There was a lot of good TV in 2024. It was an unusual year overall, the product of a post-strike Hollywood in the midst of a feverish industry-wide evolution from streaming to the cineplex, but plenty of great series still flowed throughout the year. Horror TV was no different: a slowdown in output didn’t mean a slowdown in quality, and there were a handful of outstanding horror shows in 2024 — a couple of them easily among the best shows of the year overall, and sadly, a couple of them also bowing out for their final seasons.
Here are our picks for the best of the best horror TV shows of 2024.
“Interview With the Vampire” Season 2 (AMC) ‘Interview With the Vampire’

Stephen King is a horror genre staple, and he often recommends TV shows or movies that he enjoys. He's best known for iconic horror novels such as The Shining and It, and has remained in the public spotlight for his books and adaptations of his work. Stephen King even has another book on the way, continuing a legacy that has scared readers for decades.
Because of his reputation in the horror genre, many trust his recommendations for different works, whether they be novels, TV shows, or even films. The genres of his recommendations often vary, but horror still seems to be the most consistent. Though many of King's books could still use sequels, his recommended shows such as Cabinet of Curiosities and Midnight Mass will have to do in the meantime.

2024 had a lot of TV shows ending, which included plenty of sci-fi and fantasy shows. And some of those endings left fans hungry for more!
It's no surprise that TV networks and streamers have a bad habit of canceling some shows too early. That's more true for sci-fi and fantasy shows that have a harder time capturing a large audience to justify their large budgets. It's jarring that some shows barely seemed to get out of the gate before being cut short. From famous shows to more overlooked ones, here's a look at the sci-fi/fantasy show cancellations that really angered folks in 2024!

Some may argue that this Star Wars show about a pair of Force-sensitive sisters was bad.

Fans of the hit horror-mystery series Evil that discovered the show when its first two seasons hit Netflix back in April have a lot to celebrate this New Year’s Eve, as a release date has been set for when Season 3 will debut on the streaming service. First premiering back in 2019 on CBS, the series made the jump to Paramount+ in 2021, where it remained up until the bittersweet end in August of this year.
Per What’s on Netflix, all 10 episodes of Evil Season 3 will drop on Dec. 31, making it the perfect way to ring in the new year if you’ve got nothing else planned. Starring Katja Herbers, Mike Colter, and Aasif Mandvi, the series follows their three characters of Kristen, David, and Ben as they investigate supernatural happenings for the Catholic Church, but it’s so much more than that. A new season of the supernatural drama series Evil is finally being added to Netflix later this month. CBS/Paramount+ produced four seasons of the quirky, at times outrageous, horror-leaning show, but Evil finally died in 2024. Netflix subscribers have been able to enjoy the first two seasons of demonic action on the now-canceled series, but season 3 has been absent from the service, while Evil season 4 just streamed in 2024.
That’s all about to change, however, as Netflix reveals that Evil season 3 is finally being added to the lineup, beginning on December 31 (via Tudum). The first three seasons of the show are now available to Netflix subscribers, while season 4 remains a Paramount+ exclusive for the time-being.

The following contains spoilers for Evil, now streaming on Netflix and Paramount+Evil's best characters range from the heroic to the demonic, all filtered through the show's unique blend of character drama, unexpected comedy, and grim horror. Evil focuses on a group of "Assessors," tasked with the Church to investigate potential demonic forces operating on Earth. The procedural nature of the show allowed for almost every episode to have stand-alone qualities, even as it expanded the universe and explored the grim backstories of the central heroes.
One of the things that makes the show such a compelling watch (to the point where Stephen King was a vocal champion of Evil) is the attention paid to the show's central cast of characters. There are plenty of classic horror archetypes in the show's cast, but they're all given unexpected shades that make them uniquely compelling. These edges elevate the series into a fantastic show.

Stephen King said it best when he campaigned on Evil's behalf with Paramount+ for a Season 5. Okay, so the last four episodes were technically a mini-fifth season, but we still want more. The final season did a fantastic job wrapping everything up in its last few episodes, and yet, it opened the door for so much more. With Father David Acosta (Mike Colter) and Dr. Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers) both now in Rome overseeing the Catholic Church's new assessor program, there's no reason why the show shouldn't continue its narrative into the next phase. After all, there will always be evil out there left to fight...

It’s somewhat fitting that a show so adept at exploring the unknown would find itself facing the unknown more often than not, which was often the case with the Paramount Plus cult hit horror series “Evil.”
The show, which followed a small team of “assessors” working for the Catholic church investigating all types of supernatural mysteries ranging from possessions to miracles, premiered to healthy buzz on CBS in 2019 and rave reviews from horror fans. But ratings were more modest by the end of Season 1, so Paramount opted to make the series a streaming exclusive on its fledgling (at the time) streaming service Paramount Plus.
After initially jumping from broadcast to streaming to survive potential cancelation, “Evil” would manage to hang on for four seasons and a total of 50 episodes, before wrapping its run in August of 2024 just in time for a full Halloween season binge. Paramount chose to end...

Evil recently wrapped up its run after four seasons, disappointing fans who felt there was still a lot of potential to keep going with the series. Though the show has ended, its fan base continues to grow as more viewers find the series on streaming, but the downside may be that these fans didn't discover the series quickly enough to save it.
Series creators Michelle King and Robert King spoke about Evil during an interview with Screen Rant at New York Comic Con. While Michelle is thrilled that appreciation for the series continues to grow, Robert admitted that it's a bit disappointing that this surge in popularity couldn't have happened just one year earlier. He went on to suggest that it's probably too late at this point for the increased popularity to get the series a renewal, but at the same time, Robert noted that a revival wouldn't be impossible.

If there's one thing that makes a show like Evil stand apart, it's the magnificently crafted demons, monsters, and other creatures that show up. The series follows a trio of Catholic Church assessors Dr. Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers), Father David Acosta (Mike Colter), and Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi) who try to debunk, uncover, and otherwise examine paranormal happenings around the New York area. Dr. Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers) has made her fair share of deals with devils. Over the course of four seasons of the Paramount+ show "Evil," the semi-skeptical forensic psychologist has killed a man, burned her hand on a cross, and had sex with a Satanic church founder. In the show's final season, she also helped raise the potential antichrist: a baby born via surrogate from her stolen eggs and world-class creep Leland Townsend's (Michael Emerson) DNA. It's no surprise, then, that "Evil" ends on a delightfully complicit note, with Kristen pulling an "I pretend I do not see it" meme when baby Timothy starts exhibiting some clear-cut signs of demonic possession.
In the series finale's final scene, Kristen and her daughters seem to have their happy ending. They've just moved to Rome and are loving it. Kristen is continuing her work surveying possible demonic activity alongside David (Mike Colter), the...

The aptly titled Tulsa King Season 2 premiere finds Dwight “The General” Manfredi back in the saddle, alright.
He’s fighting for his life, giving advice behind bars, and expanding his business, all while navigating new enemies poised to take action to either scuttle or take over his successful Tulsa operation.
Don’t get me wrong; I know he’ll prevail. What’s the point of a show with Sly Stallone behind bars? But still, Dwight’s got a lot on his plate.
(Brian Douglas/Paramount+) Are The Walls Closing in on Dwight?
Thanks to his arrest, it’s the first time anyone has paid attention to Dwight’s Tulsa presence, making things much harder on The General.
Maybe that’s why he constantly toys with the idea of going legit. It’s got to be hard to thrive with that kind of stress. There is always someone out to get him.

Originally debuting on the CBS network and then moving to streaming for Season 2, Evil was The X-Files if Mulder and Scully were backed by the Catholic Church instead of the Federal government and Mulder was a priest.
The series focused on four central characters, the "demonic assessors" for St. Joseph's Church in New York. David Acosta (Mike Colter) was a seminarian and leader of the team. Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi) was the scientist and technology expert as well as an atheist. Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers) was a psychiatrist and lapsed Catholic who evaluated the possessed medically and also loved David. Lastly,...

There has never quite been a show like the CBS-turned-Paramount+ drama Evil, nor will there ever be one like it again. This supernatural horror procedural checks all the boxes you could hope for in a thriller or mystery series, bringing together psychologist Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers), priest-in-training David Acosta (Mike Colter), and technical expert Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi) as the three work on behalf of the Catholic Church investigating potential miracles, possessions, and other supernatural happenings, often unsure if there's enough evidence for the paranormal or if it's all mind games. But while the show becomes more serialized after its first season, one Season 2 episode stands out among the rest as being one of the best representations of the show's ultimate potential: "S Is for Silence."...

The following contains spoilers for Evil season 4 episode 14, "Fear of the End," now streaming on Paramount+Evil's season four finale is also effectively the ending of the fan-favorite horror series, even if it leaves a number of door open for further adventures. Across four seasons, Evil's central trio of psychiatric consultant Kristen Bouchard, priest David Acosta, and inventive contractor Ben Shakir have survived plenty of the worst kinds of threats the world can throw at them. Along the way, they've also confronted the darkest corners of their own mortality and come out the other side stronger and united in the face of evil.
This carries through the series finale, "Fear of the End," which brings back many elements from previous seasons and effectively works as a closing chapter of the series. This includes resolving their long-running conflict with the dangerous Leland, as well as their prickly relationship with the Catholic Church.

The fourth and final season of Evil just released on Paramount+, but that isn't stopping the king of horror Stephen King from demanding more episodes of the acclaimed streaming series. Evil stars Katja Herbers, Mike Colter, Aasif Mandvi, and Michael Emerson in a series about people with distinct backgrounds investigating supernatural occurrences that may have ties to the origin of evil. Although the series was canceled by Paramount+ ahead of its fourth season, King is a big fan of Evil and has made public his desire to see it return with more episodes.
Stephen King went to X/Twitter to demand more Evil, posting a clear but concise message directed at the streaming service, saying, "Dear Paramount+: More Evil, please." There's mounting support to have Evil renewed for another season. Stephen King has now joined the bandwagon calling for the show to continue.
The King of Horror is campaigning for Evil's continuation on Paramount+. The streamer announced in February that the series would end after four seasons, and the final episode was released on Aug. 22. Stephen King posted his petition on X, calling for Evil's renewal on the platform. "Dear Paramount+: More Evil, please," he wrote. This came with unanimous support from fans and Katja Herbers, who played Dr. Kristen Bouchard in the show. "From the bottom of our Evil hearts, thank you!!!" she responded. One comment suggested that King consider writing an episode if ever his request was granted, which makes for a tempting proposition for any streamer or network.

When word came down from on high that Evil would end with the conclusion of its fourth season, fans rallied online to save the show from cancelation, with the show’s brilliant star, Katja Herbers, leading the charge. Herber’s enthusiasm for the series is inspiring, with the actress championing the show’s continuation at every turn, signaling to networks and streamers that Team Evil is ready and willing to continue the show’s unique spin on the all but extinct and nostalgic monster-of-the-week formula. Helping to add fuel to Herbers’ fire is the Master of Horror himself, Stephen King, who recently sang Evil’s praises during a PBS News interview. With such a ringing endorsement from one of entertainment’s most sought-after creators,...

Herbers co-starred with Mike Colter and Aasif Mandvi as the series' mainstay ensemble; the series revolved around their characters' investigations of the supernatural. Evil's Season 4 finale recently dropped with a satisfying wrap-up to the overarching plot, but it still left a thread of a continuing story to explore.
