The last few decades have been filled with a lot of original content that became extremely profitable, so studios decided to bank on that success with unwarranted sequels or reboots. One of those franchises includes Independence Day.

For fans of rom-coms, it can be a struggle to find a new one that puts a fun, unique spin on all the tropes and twists that go hand-in-hand with the genre, while also respecting that said twists should not come at the expense of what makes the genre so beloved. In the case of French Girl, in theaters now, writer-directors James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright take the story to Quebec City, Canada, and follow Sophie (Évelyne Brochu), a French-Canadian chef living in the States, who travels home with her American boyfriend Gordon (Zach Braff) when she gets an opportunity to interview for a prestigious restaurant at the Château Frontenac. Only problem? Head chef and restaurant owner Ruby (Vanessa Hudgens) is also Sophie's ex-girlfriend. And she wants her back.

The love triangle in French Girl is unique and set in a beautiful, unique setting of French Canada. The comedic aspect of Ruby's character brought a fun dynamic to the movie, especially in scenes with Gordon. Evelyne Brochu felt connected to her role as a French girl and expressed a desire to be part of the Orphan Black world forever.
French Girl follows Gordon, whose life seems nearly perfect working as an English teacher in Brooklyn with a beloved girlfriend, Sophie. However, things get flipped on their heads when Sophie is offered the opportunity to land her dream job as an executive chef at a new restaurant in her hometown, Quebec City. When they visit her home, Gordon makes a startling discovery about Sophie's friend Ruby, who set up the job opportunity, and their history as more than just friends.

Who said romantic comedies are dead? Dating back to the 1990s and beyond, of course, the crowd-pleasing genre remains a perfect date-night excuse to remain couchbound and watch lovers quarrel, reunite, kiss, make up, and more. French Girl, a new small-budget feature from co-writer-directors James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright, isn't exactly the most groundbreaking content out there, but it successfully puts a unique little spin on the common love-triangle tropes often seen in modern-day romantic comedies. Zach Braff's age certainly shows here, but his reliably humorous physical comedy might just bring you back to the glory days of Scrubs.

Zach Braff returns to rom-coms in French Girl, playing a romantic trying to keep his love alive despite a job offer that separates him from his girlfriend. French Girl is a heartwarming romantic comedy that explores the cultural clash between the U.S. and Canada. While there is currently no Scrubs reunion or movie in development, both creator Bill Lawrence and Zach Braff believe it is inevitable and that fans want to see it happen.

Had there been a sequel to 1994's Stargate, the franchise would have moved beyond Egyptian extra-terrestrials.
During an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, franchise producer and co-creator Dean Devlin discussed his and film collaborator Roland Emmerich's abandoned sequel plans for Stargate, as well as for 1996's Independence Day and 1998's Godzilla. The duo found so much mainstream success starting with Stargate that they planned to make a trilogy, with the second installment asking, "[W]hy are there pyramids in Mayan culture" and the third installment bringing the entire mythology together. "The third one was going to tie everything together," Devlin said. "We were gonna have the Yeti, we were gonna have the Loch Ness Monster. It was all going to make sense how these things are tied together."

In the year 2000, the late literary critic James Wood put forth the concept of “hysterical realism,” a then-emergent micro-genre in which the delirious overstimulation of modern life is expressed through a hoarder-caliber accumulation of detail. At the time, he was talking about the likes of Thomas Pynchon, David Foster Wallace, and Zadie Smith, and their doorstopper works’ endless minutiae on land surveying or tennis strategy or the ethics of lab rat usage.

Director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin have been planning a new Stargate reboot for years. The project was said to be a trilogy that allowed them to finish the story that they started with the original film. I was actually kind of interested to see what they would do with it, but the project is no longer happening.
During an interview with Empire, Devlin explained that the reason why they aren't doing it anymore is because he's scared they are going to screw it up. He said:
“It looked good for a couple of months, but now it’s not looking so good. There are just a lot of things that have to fire at the same time, and there was a moment where I thought it was all firing at the same time, and then it all kind of fell apart.“It’s one of the reasons I prefer to work independently.

Before filmmakers Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin joined forces on the 1996 blockbuster Independence Day, they also wrote the 1994 sci-fi film Stargate, which Roland Emmerich directed. The film was a modest success, earning $71.5 million at the domestic box office and $196.5 million worldwide. The movie would spawn a big franchise on the small screen with the launch of Stargate Sg-1 in 1997, but it never got a big screen sequel. A few years ago, it was reported that the filmmakers were returning to work on a reboot trilogy. Now it seems that may not happen anymore.
Empire recently spoke with Dean Devlin, who was promoting the third season of his TNT TV series The Librarians, where he offered an update on the Stargate reboot. While the project was looking promising for quite some time, Dean Devlin says it is no longer happening. Here's what he had to say below.

It’s fairly amazing that it took five men — Nicolas Wright, James A. Woods, Dean Devlin, Roland Emmerich, James Vanderbilt – to conceive the story and pen the script to Independence Day: Resurgence when it trod no new ground and felt like the worst rehash of the original film and many other Sf flicks from the preceding twenty years.
The original ID4 was an unassuming popcorn thriller with implausible science and predictable actions but leavened with strong performances and quirky, fun characters. They were having fun fighting the alien invaders and we had memorable lines and Will Smith punching out an alien with “Welcome to Earth”.
Somehow, these five, including Devlin and Emmerich who gave us the first, left out the fun. Instead, for two hours we see a mix of familiar and unfamiliar figures watch an even larger alien ship arrive, intent on destroying Earth either as an act of...

Halfway through both the summer movie season and the year of 2016 as a whole, sequels have been hit or miss. Follow-ups such as Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, X-Men: Apocalypse, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Now You See Me 2 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows couldn't capture the box office magic of its predecessors. Of course, the biggest movie of the year right now is a sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but last week, a follow-up 13 years in the making, Finding Dory, opened huge with $135 million, breaking Shrek the Third's record for biggest animated opening weekend ($121.6 million). As expected, this forgetful fish staved off three newcomers this weekend, 20th Century Fox's Independence Day: Resurgence, Sony's The Shallows and Stx Entertainment's Free State of Jones, repeating atop the box office with $73.2 million.

You could generously call the decision to hide Independence Day: Resurgence from critics an “unconventional” choice. 20th Century Fox initially wasn’t screening the movie at all before it opened, then opted to only show it earlier today at a press screening hours after it hit screens, that’s not much of a sign of confidence. It’s odd too, considering how well regarded the original is and how well nostalgia worked for Jurassic World last year. Well, I hate to be the one to say it, but they were right to hide this one. It’s out now and likely will do strong business, but the quality drop between Independence Day and Independence Day: Resurgence is staggering. What a shame too. I’m sure everyone knows what this flick is about, but just quickly, I’ll state the obvious that it’s a sequel to the disaster epic that...

Somehow – despite Roland Emmerich’s obsessive focus on Earth’s destruction – Independence Day found a way to bottle raw human fortitude in a way that its sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence, clumsily fumbles. In the most generic, fan-servicing, sequelitis-stricken way, this sci-fi doomsday franchise charges back into theaters like a bull in an intergalactic China shop. The entire films is basically one big “Here we go again!” moment on repeat, as Emmerich prays that nostalgia is enough to distract from the nothingness that’s occurring on screen. Look! There’s a heroic poster of Will Smith! Or over there! It’s that crazy doctor who totally should be dead! And Jeff Goldblum! You guys still love him, right?!

Back in the mid-1990s, the team of director Roland Emmerich and writer/producer Dean Devlin were responsible for two of the biggest sci-fi films of the period - "Stargate" and "Independence Day".
Twenty years on, Emmerich delivers a sequel to the latter with "Independence Day: Resurgence" opening next week. Out doing promotional rounds for it, Devlin confirmed to Variety that the pair are turning their attention towards a reboot of, rather than a sequel to, the "Stargate" franchise. Speaking about how the idea for the reboot came together, he says:

Two years before their epic blockbuster Independence Day shattered box office records in the summer of 1996, Dean Devlin co-wrote the sci-fi cult classic Stargate with director Roland Emmerich. While the film put up decent numbers at the box office, taking in $71.5 million domestically and $196.5 million worldwide, it became an even bigger hit on the small screen with the launch of Stargate Sg-1, which ran for 10 seasons and spawned numerous spinoffs. Now that their sequel Independence Day: Resurgence is set to hit theaters next weekend, both Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich are eyeing a reboot trilogy of their original movie.
We first reported on this Stargate reboot in 2014, with a report surfacing the following year that Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich's Independence Day sequel was put on hold so they could make Stargate. The idea of filmmakers rebooting a franchise in order to finish telling their original story may seem antithetical, but it's exactly what producer Dean Devlin and director Roland Emmerich are planning for Stargate. The duo originally planned for their 1994 movie to be the first part in a trilogy, but, as Devlin says, "because of what happened with the rights and changes at the studio and all kinds of strange things, we never got to do parts two and three.”
Variety sat down with him and asked about his plans for the reboot and why they didn't just take the same approach they did with Independence Day: Resurgence and pick up where they left off:
“It’s not a story that can take place 20 years later. So the only way to really tell that trilogy is to go back from the beginning and start the story all over again. It was taken away from us,...

Not long before Independence Day made Roland Emmerich into a blockbuster king, he channelled his sci-fi interests into a little movie called Stargate. The 1994 sci-fi underdog made a decent profit at the box office, raking in around $200 million, which led to a number of TV spinoffs and straight-to-video sequels.
With plans for a rebooted Stargate universe on the horizon, producer Dean Devlin talked to Variety about what purpose they serve. It’s all about wrapping up their initial franchise plans, because even though the original film’s success spawned more titles, none were based on Emmerich and Devlin’s designs.

We may be buzzing about the possibility of a different woman in the White House by the time Independence Day 2 opens in 2016, but for now, the Roland Emmerich-directed sequel has just added Sela Ward to its cast in the key role of President Lanford.
Ward, known best for her role on CSI: NY, has a history with Emmerich – they last worked together on The Day After Tomorrow, which stands as one of the helmer’s biggest hits. Though Ward has done more work on the small screen since playing Dr. Lucy Hall in that disaster extravaganza, she last appeared as Sharon Schieber in David Fincher’s Gone Girl.
She joins a cast that includes some familiar faces, like Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman and Vivica A. Fox, all of whom starred in Independence Day way back in 1996, as well as newcomers to the franchise like Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games...

Independence Day had Bill Pullman’s President Thomas J. Whitmore around to rally humanity and fight the aliens. But unless the universe in which the film takes place has very different rules governing Us presidents, he can’t still be the leader of the free world 20 years later. And indeed it’s true – Sela Ward will be President Lanford in Independence Day 2.She’ll be the White House incumbent – we assume the place has been rebuilt since the original attack – for the story of Earth having to fend off the next wave of extra-terrestrial invasion attempts. Ward is one of the new faces for the franchise, joining the likes of Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Travis Tope and Joey King, alongside returning cast members Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A. Just one day after we reported that Independence Day star Vivica A. Fox will return for Independence Day 2, Boardwalk Empire actor Travis Tope is in negotiations to join the cast. The actor will play a character named Charlie, although no further details were given. Independence Day star Will Smith is not returning, although Bill Pullman (Thomas Whitmore) and Jeff Goldblum (David Levinson) are reprising their roles from the original, alongside Vivica A. Fox.
The new cast members coming on board for the sequel include Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher and Charlotte Gainsbourg. When Jessie Usher was originally cast, it was revealed that he is playing the son of Will Smith's Stephen Hiller. However, The Wrap reports that he is actually playing Jasmine Dubrow's son Dylan, originally played by Ross Bagley in Independence Day. In the original movie, Hiller was dating Dubrow, but he was not the father of Dylan.

The latest addition to Roland Emmerich’s long-gestating sequel Independence Day 2 is a little less unexpected than last week’s newbie. Vivica A. Fox, who portrayed Will Smith’s stripper girlfriend Jasmine Dubrow in the 1996 original, has officially signed on to reprise her role.
Emmerich announced the news via Twitter today:
Exciting news… just officially closed @MsVivicaFox for #IndependenceDay! Here’s the pic! pic.twitter.com/hXVjnqOFaD

Fox’s character had a pivotal role in the first outing that involved reuniting the First Lady with the President. Whether or not she will grapple with something a bit meatier – i.e. taking out the aliens – is unknown. One thing is for certain, whatever she does she’ll have family alongside her. No, she didn’t marry Smith’s cocky pilot and he’s definitely not returning. Throughout her story arc in the original she was accompanied by her son,...

Charlotte Gainsbourg, who most recently starred in director Lars von Trier's controversial Nymphomaniac Volume I and Nymphomaniac Volume II, is in negotiations to join the cast of 20th Century Fox's sci-fi action sequel Independence Day 2. No details were given for her character, but if a deal is finalized, she will join Jessie Usher, Liam Hemsworth and Jeff Goldblum, who reprises his David Levinson role from 1996's Independence Day. While Will Smith is not returning as Air Force pilot Stephen Hiller for the follow-up, it is believed that Bill Pullman will be back as Thomas Whitmore.
We reported earlier this month that Jessie Usher is playing the son of Will Smith's Stephen Hiller, but in the original Independence Day, it was never revealed that Hiller had a son. His girlfriend, Jasmine Dubrow (Vivica A. Fox) did have a young son named Dylan (Ross Bagley), but Hiller was not the father.

In one of the most interesting pieces of casting news to land this week, THR reports that Charlotte Gainsbourg has entered talks to appear in sci-fi sequel Independence Day 2. The actress is known for her aggressively method performances in Lars Von Trier’s back catalogue of works including Nymphomaniac, Antichrist and Melancholia, so stepping away from character-driven pieces and into the realm of blockbuster fare is certainly an unexpected move for Gainsbourg.

When Independence Day exploded onto the big screen in 1996, it became a box office smash hit. Its effective mix of science fiction, ground-breaking special effects, and disaster movie themes turned it into the quintessential summer blockbuster, and paved the way for director Roland Emmerich to wage cinematic war on countless iconic landmarks in subsequent movies, such as Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012 and White House Down. Surprisingly, a sequel has been slow to develop – but the wait is almost over now, as finally, almost two decades later, Independence Day 2 is on its way – with Jessie Usher now cast.
Plot details are, of course, tightly under wraps, but we can surmise from the casting that a high level of continuity can be expected. Jeff Goldblum will apparently reprise his role as codebreaker and day saviour, David Levinson, and Jessie Usher is set to play the son of Will Smith’s Independence Day character,...

Last year we learned that Warner Bros. and MGM were going to develop a Stargate trilogy with director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin. They've been working on developing a new Stargate film for years, and it's continuing to move forward.
Nicolas Wright and James A. Woods are in final negotiations to write the script for the first film of the trilogy. The two writers recently worked together with Emmerich on Independence Day 2. They obviously all had a good experience working with each other since they are teaming back up.
I've enjoyed the Stargate franchise over the years, from the first film to the several SyFy Channel series' that followed. The original plan for the first film was to turn it into a trilogy but they never got to make the other two films. I imagine this new set of movies will start from scratch and reinvent the franchise.

While Independence Day 2 is gearing up for production, with Liam Hemsworth being the latest potential addition to the cast of the sequel from director Roland Emmerich, one of the filmmaker's other properties getting the reboot treatment is making progress as well. As we learned last summer, Emmerich will be at the helm of a Stargate reboot, which is intended to be a trilogy, and now THR reports it will be Independence Day 2 writers Nicolas Wright & James A. Woods scripting the first film. The duo is relatively new to Hollywood, but it was their draft that got ID4-2 off the ground, so they must be doing something right. Not somebody you'd necessarily call idle, Roland Emmerich is currently scheming an Independence Day sequel and the political drama Stonewall. But there's apparently room for one more project on his slate, since he's just picked up a spec script by Nicolas Wright and James A. Woods. The as-yet untitled action film is set on "a diving ship in the Arctic".It's yet another example of the spec script making something of a comeback in recent years, after its multimillion dollar '90s heyday and subsequent decline. Safer properties (books, comics, sequels) replaced specs in recent years, but a recent article in the La Times reveals that, while just 67 spec scripts were sold in Hollywood in 2009, the number rose to 154 in 2012 and 182 last year. Crazy paydays like the ones previously enjoyed by Shane Black and Joe Esterhasz are still thin on the ground, however. The script - which we'll call we'll...

Exclusive: Roland Emmerich has been at the center of some of the biggest spec script deals I have ever written about. Usually, he’s the co-writer and some studio is peeling off millions of dollars and making huge gross commitments to one of his global-scale adventure films. Today, Emmerich has completed a spec script deal, but this time, he’s the buyer. I hear his Centropolis Entertainment has acquired rights to an untitled action thriller scripted by actor-writers Nicolas Wright and James A. Woods. Centropolis executive Marco Shepherd, who brought the project to the company, will produce. The film is set on a diving ship in the Arctic. This is a script that Emmerich will likely eye as a potential directing assignment, but that hasn’t been determined and he’s plenty busy. He’s prepping to next direct Stonewall, a Jon Robin Baitz-scripted drama about a young man...
