‘Kill’ Review: Train-Set Indian Actioner Alternately Entertains and Exhausts
Image
Aspiring emergency room doctors may want to check out Kill, a film that truly lives up to its name.

Depicting the gory mayhem that results when dozens of dacoits, or armed bandits, take over a moving train, Nikhil Nagesh Bhat’s Hindi-language action film could serve as a medical school primer on the effects of stab wounds and bludgeoning on the human body. The director and action coordinators deserve a lot of praise, but it’s the makeup and prosthetics designers that should be singled out for their contributions, which will have squeamish audience members closing their eyes. The sound designers, who provided the nasty aural accompaniment to the gore, come in a close second.

As with most films of this type, the set-up is simple and quick. Army commando Amrit (Lakshya) and his best friend and fellow soldier Viresh (Abhishek Chauhan) board an overnight train to New Delhi in...

‘Kill’ Review: Brave, Violent and Yet Deficient Tale
Image
Hindi action films have long been a vehicle for celebrating male machismo and glorifying hero worship. They are often depicted as larger-than-life characters who are infallible, and their moral compass is unwavering. Such attributes most of the time helped filmmakers catering to the masses enhance the larger-than-life persona of their superstar to perpetuate traditional notions of masculinity and create enduring archetypes that resonate with audiences. This strategy has most of the time helped such films to set the cash registers ringing at the box office. Nikhil Nagesh Bhat’s Kill also features an invincible fighting machine as a protagonist who can single-handedly take on multiple adversaries and restore justice. What makes this thrilling action drama distinct from following the trend is its lack of idolization of the protagonist and its deviation from traditional notions of masculinity. Set within the confines of a train, the less-than-two-hour pulse-pounding fest is filled with graphic,...

Plot: When army commando Amrit finds out his girlfriend Tulika is engaged against her will, he boards a New Delhi-bound train in a daring quest to derail the arranged marriage. But when a gang of knife-wielding thieves led by the ruthless Fani begins to terrorize innocent passengers on the train, Amrit takes on the thieves in a death-defying spree to save those around him – turning what should have been a typical commute into an adrenaline-fueled thrill ride.

Review: India’s last big crossover hit was 2022’s Oscar-winning Hindi-language film Rrr. That historical epic blended Marvel Studios’ spectacle with revisionist history for an international box office success. This year’s buzzworthy Hindi movie is Kill. The basic title should be enough indication that this movie will not be a feel-good comedy or a romantic drama. Kill takes a cue from predecessors like John Wick and The Raid to deliver a bloody,...

Indian cinema — and in particular its perception here in the West — has been in the ascendant since Rrr became a surprise smash hit in 2022. Kill, the Hindi-language new film from Nikhil Nagesh Bhat, feels nearly as significant as that epic: a thunderous action film that smashes expectations of what can come from the country’s powerhouse film industry.

As far as action goes, it is relentless. The obvious comparisons would be that it lands somewhere between the one-man-against-the-terrorists high-concept of Die Hard, the non-stop, expertly-staged ultraviolence of Gareth Evans’ The Raid, and the bloody, claustrophobic public-transport-disaster of Yeon Sang-ho’s Train To Busan. It’s visceral and contained, a smart genre exercise clearly influenced by specialists from around the world, but with a distinct Indian flavour.

Suggesting more of a ‘masala film’ approach, Kill begins in a melodramatic mould: Tulika (Tanya Maniktala) is to be married off against her will...

Kill Review: India's Intense, Ultra-Violent Actioner Offers Must-See Deaths By Fire Extinguisher
Image
Indian cinema's rise continues with Nikhil Nagesh Bhat's Kill, featuring intense action inspired by The Raid. The story offers unique twists on the one-man army formula, namely in Amrit's vulnerability and failed attempts to save passengers. Despite character development shortcomings and some limitations in the train setting, Kill delivers a thrilling and subversive action experience.

Indian cinema has been on a steady international rise over the past few years, whether it be the Oscar-winning epic Rrr, the record-breaking sci-fi epic Kalki 2898 Ad or Dev Patel's explosive directorial debut Monkey Man. With the upcoming release of Nikhil Nagesh Bhat's Kill, the country's international rise in filmmaking is certainly going to continue in spite of some of the movie's underwhelming elements.

Kill Review — Lakshya Stars in One of the Year’s Most Epic Action Films!
Image
Here at FandomWire, we review the new action spectacular Kill (2023) starring Lakshya, and this article is spoiler-free.

Sometimes, a film star can come out of nowhere and knock you off your feet. In the Indian Hindi-language action thriller Kill, Lakshya is that man. A relative unknown, he has burst onto the scene with his granite jaw, perfect five-o’clock shadow, and a thick head of hair that hardly bristles as he caves someone’s chest in with a powerful kick or cracks a skull with an iron fist.

After watching Kill, viewers may enjoy the adrenaline-pumping, bone-crunching, knuckle-busting, and lip-splitting escapism. The type that drags its villains across some cheap train carpet, leaving the taste of rug burn in their mouths and shards of glass in their foreheads.

‘Kill’ Review: Nikhil Nagesh Bhat’s Bollywood Action Extravaganza Doesn’t Miss a Beat
Image
Writer-director Nikhil Nagesh Bhat’s single-location actioner marks a very welcome indulgence of the time-tested “Die Hard on a Blank” trope. This film’s brutal action is entirely restricted to a moving New Dehil-bound train, the setting effectively acting as a version of Die Hard’s Nakatomi Plaza, only tipped on its side and sent rocketing through the Indian countryside. And it makes for one hell of a ride.

Kill wastes absolutely no time putting its wheels in motion. The train literally leaves the station within barely five minutes of screen time, carrying with it our dashing hero, Amrit (Lakshya), his beautiful bride-to-be, Tulika (Tanya Maniktala), and his faithful right-hand man, Viresh (Abhishek Cauhan). Barely five more minutes have passed when a gang of bandits emerge from the throngs of passengers and being violently robbing everyone in sight.

It’s an extremely smart setup for a thriller. The robbery takes...

Kill Official Trailer Unveils One Of This Year's Most Intense, Blood-Soaked, and Violent Action Thrillers
Image
Lionsgate Pictures and Roadside Attractions, in collaboration with Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment, have released the first official trailer for Kill, an upcoming Indian action-thriller that has been garnering rave reviews across the globe since its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival last September.

Nikhil Nagesh Bhat (Apurva; Hurdang; The Gone Game) helmed the badass picture, which is currently boasting an impressive 100% Certified Fresh certification on review aggregator RottenTomatoes, with many comparing it favorably to the similarly-themed actioners The Raid and The Night Comes for Us. In their glowing review, Variety wrote, "As brutal a film as the country has ever produced, Kill is a shockingly graphic action showcase from an industry that typically plays violence in a more cartoony register."

The synopsis reads, "When army commando Amrit finds out his true love Tulika is engaged against her will, he boards a New Delhi-bound train in a daring quest to derail the arranged marriage.

The train soon becomes a combat battleground as a pair of commandos face an army of invading bandits. What was supposed to be a leisurely trek turns into a claustrophobic bloodbath, with death and destruction filling every car along a fast-moving train.

‘Kill’ Review: A Train, Two Commandos and 40 Thieves Add Up to One Bloody Action Bonanza
Image
Years ago, Indian director Nikhil Nagesh Bhat fell asleep on a cross-country train ride, only to discover upon reaching his destination that the cars on either side of his had been robbed by armed bandits, known as “dacoits.” The heist couldn’t have been too intense, or it would have awakened him, but it got the helmer’s gears turning about what a truly terrifying train raid might look like. The answer: “Kill,” in which a crew of 40-odd thieves board a train, intending to steal passengers’ watches and phones, then turn bloodthirsty after running into a pair of hardheaded commandos.

As brutal a film as the country has ever produced, “Kill” is a shockingly graphic action showcase from an industry that typically plays violence in a more cartoony register. All told, “Overkill” probably would have been a better title, considering how far Bhat takes each and every altercation, milking it for maximum vengeance.

Andy Lau Rewrites Online Concert Record With Douyin Performance – Global Bulletin
Image
Online Concert Record

A weekend concert by Hong Kong acting and singing superstar Andy Lau Tak-wah attracted a record-breaking 350 million viewers on Douyin, the mainland Chinese sister company of TikTok. The concert ran for two hours and attracted 100 million viewers in the first 30 minutes, with tens of millions more joining by the end. The figures beat Lau’s own previous record on the platform, which he set in July last year at a concert to celebrate his 40 years in the business. The South China Morning Post said the record numbers were swelled by a recent wave of nostalgia for Canto-pop or Cantonese-language contemporary music, though the paper also noted that Lau also performed a couple of Mandarin-language classics.

Arrested Executives

Tokyo prosecutors Tuesday arrested two executives of publisher and film production giant Kadokawa on suspicion of funneling bribes totaling to Takahashi Haruyuki, the former director of the Organizing Committee for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

“Undekhi season 2 is more of the same, and at the top of the game“ – A Subhask K Jha Review
Image
Undekhi(SonyLIV, 10 Episodes)

Directed by Ashish R Shukla

More of the same, and yet at the top of the game…That just about sums up the second season of 2020’s well-played cat-and-mouse crime thriller about a super-rich wedding, a murder and the affluent arrogance of a family that thinks crime is the only way to stay wealthy.

It’s a world where people get shot randomly, remorselessly. The patriarch of the family(Harsh Chhaya over-the-top) is a drunken lout whose empirical viciousness is manned and powered entirely by his wild nephew Rinku(Surya Sharma, brilliant) .

Rinku remains as interesting in Season 2 as he was the first tiem around. He is rough, rude, violent and unstoppable. Yet he gives us fleeting glimpses of something less toxic specially when his wife Muskaan(Shivangi Singh) is around.Muskaan is another character to look out for. She looks homely but loves guns specially when...

“Sharib Hashmi In Darbaan Is Heartwarming In A Way Rarely Seen” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Darbaan (Zee5)

Starring Sharib Hashmi, Sharad Kelkar, Rasika Dugal, Flora Saini and Harsh Chhaya

Directed by Bipin Nadkarni

There is something about Rabindranath Tagore’s stories that lends itself to great cinema. Darbaan is not a great film. But it’s a very good piece of cinema. Artistically imagined and gently executed, it has the very accomplished Sharib Hashmi playing a simple caregiver in a feudal family (the story is translocated from the end of zamindari to the takeover of the coalmines in Dhanbad in the early 1970s) whose life is a litany of subservience.

Hashmi immerses himself in the role with a furious passion that reminded me of Ashok Kumar in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Aashirwaad. Sharib Hashmi is a great actor destined to secrete his greateness in small meaningful films while actors with not even a grain of his talent are strutting around as stars in Bollywood.

Without moving...

Sharad Kelkar and Sharib Hashmi in Darbaan (2020)
Darbaan: Poignant drama (Ians Review; Rating: * * and 1/2 )
Sharad Kelkar and Sharib Hashmi in Darbaan (2020)
Darbaan (film on Zee5); Cast: Sharib Hashmi, Sharad Kelkar, Rasika Dugal, Flora Saini, Harsh Chhaya; Direction: Bipin Nadkarni; Rating: * * and 1/2 (two and a half stars)

By Vinayak Chakravorty

It is easy to make a film if your material at hand is Tagore. Then again, it is just as hard, think of the purists. National Award-winning Marathi filmmaker Bipin Nadkarni enters Hindi films straddling those pros and cons.

Nadkarni's film rides a second asset besides the hallmark emotive nuances that come with a Rabindranath Tagore classic. Sharib Hashmi may still not draw immediate recall for many Bollywood buffs, but chances are if you recognise him from Filmistaan or the web series The Family Man, you know him as an actor who doesn't need much of an effort to light up a scene. With a title role in Darbaan, Nadkarni gives Hashmi an entire film to flaunt his skills.

Nadkarni and co-writer...

Aditya Seal on nepotism: Some brainless person glamourised the word
Aditya Seal
Bollywood outsider Aditya Seal does not agree with the allegation that nepotism reigns in the film industry and, without taking names, says some brainless person has glamourised the word.

The word nepotism caught momentum after actress Kangana Ranaut used it for the first time on "Koffee With Karan", accusing show host and filmmaker Karan Johar of being the flag-bearer of nepotism in Bollywood. The debate over the subject was revived by Kangana recently after the death of Sushant Singh Rajput, an outsider who had gone on to become a star in Bollywood.

Aditya was recently seen in the 2019 teenybopper flick, Student Of The Year 2, produced by Johar.

"I did 'Ek Chotisi Love Story' and 'Purani Jeans', where I was launched. There was another film, 'Tum Bin II' where I was re-launched and then I did 'Student Of The Year 2'. So, for me I don't understand the...

Undekhi is No One Killed Jessica meets Damini with an excellent mix of fact & fiction – Exclusive Review
Image
What a time it is turning out to be the world of Indian web series on the Ott platform. Considering this is the lockdown period, thankfully the ones which are deserving are indeed finding quite some eyeballs and attention for themselves. Undekhi is one such web series that spreads across 10 episodes and turns out to be such an engaging dramatic thriller that you don’t have a choice but to binge watch it from start to finish.

Inspired by the true events from a few years back when during a celebratory event a drunk man shot a female dancer from a close range, hence taking her life, Undekhi covers a lot more distance than what the premise may suggest. An excellent mix of fact & fiction, it goes beyond picking up from the headlines that stunned the nation and actually brings to fore the sheer audacity of a section of rich...

TV is more advertising than programming: Harsh Chhaya (Interview)
New Delhi, April 19: With purchasing power on the rise in India, television sets are no longer a luxury and, given this scenario, well-known TV artist Harsh Chhaya feels that the medium should ideally be used to "uplift the benchmark of sensibilities" rather than taking them to base levels.

The actor, who has witnessed the highs and lows of the small screen for over 20 years, pointed out that till the 1980s, things like telephones, TVs, refrigerators and even tape recorders were a luxury, but with the growth of purchasing power, especially with the advent of credit facilities, larger parts of the population came into the entertainment.

TV scenario is creatively bankrupt: Harsh Chhaya (Interview)
New Delhi, April 1: The "creatively bankrupt TV scenario" has driven Harsh Chhaya, an actor with over 20 years' experience, into re-exploring his love for scriptwriting and the aspiration to direct. To this extent, his endeavour is that fresh storytelling, often slated as "the other cinema", takes centrestage in filmdom.

"I would say I am now giving serious attention to writing. I did write on and off even earlier," Harsh told Ians in an email interview.

He emerged successful at a time when satellite television was at the nascent stage but had qualitative and mature content to offer shows like "Tara" and "Hasratein" in.
