This Day That Year: Anubhav Sinha’s 2018 modern political masterpiece Mulk
Image
Turning the focus on the brilliant 2018 release Mulk, Subhash K Jha presents a new installment of This Day That Year feature and director Anubhav Sinha speaks about the making of the drama.

Whose land is it anyway? At a time when the Indian Muslim finds himself isolated like never before, Anubhav Sinha’s Mulk serves as a jolting reminder of how far into the darkest recesses of distrust and animosity, terrorism has taken the blame game.

It is very hard to believe that Sinha whose earlier credits include fluff stuff like Tum Bin and Ra.One, has actually created this modern political masterpiece which attempts very successfully to humanize a community that has been demonized by some negative elements. And yet Anubhav Sinha’s doesn’t take sides, doesn’t make the Indian Muslim community a portrait of injured innocence.

What it does do—and full-marks to Anubhav Sinha for...

“Imagine, What This Gimmick Would Do To Cinema!” Aanand Rai Shocked To Know About AI Generated “Happy” Ending For His Film
Image
Filmmaker Aanand Rai is extremely upset. His 2013 romantic drama Raanjhanaa which created a stir in both critical and cinegoers’ circle, is now being given a new entirely unexpected spin which Rai had never thought of….

Yes, Dhanush’s character will live! In the original the character Kundan had died. It is this tragic ending that made Rai’s film memorable.

“Now , I suppose everyone will go home happy with their popcorn bag emptied and no emotions ruffled,” says filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali sarcastically. Like Raanjhanaa, his Devdas is also produced by Eros International. Bhansali wonders what they might do to his magnum opus: revive the dead Devdas, perhaps just to please Shah Rukh Khan’s fans?

Aanand Rai says he is in a state of shock. “I am still trying to understand the gravity of what’s being done. How can someone else decide how to conclude my film? Imagine...

This 100%-Rated Bollywood Gem Is Free On YouTube—Here’s Why It Deserves Your Attention

A Still From Filmistaan (Photo Credit – Prime Video)

Some films don’t need star power or massive budgets to strike the right chord with the audience. Sometimes, they just need to have their hearts in the right place. One such lesser-known Indian gem is Filmistaan, an offbeat yet brilliant 2012 film directed by Nitin Kakkar (in his feature film directorial debut) and starring Sharib Hashmi in the lead role.

After being screened in various national and international film festivals, Filmistaan quietly made its way to Indian cinemas on June 6, 2014. Despite being released without much fanfare, the film earned a rare 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. And here’s the great news: it’s now streaming for free on YouTube. 11 Years Of Nitin Kakkar’s Filmistan
Image
Filmistaan would have been an outrageously funny film were it not for the profoundly moving underbelly that it secretes with such fluency and spontaneity. The film could have become a gallery of clichés about Indo-Pak harmony. A sort of Veer-Zara turned into a Veru and Zara-uddin who become friends in Pakistani soil while guns boom all around them.

Sachindra Vats edits the scenes down to the minimum when required. But generally he lets the characters develop naturally even if the process takes some time. The film is shot in authentic locations by cinematographer Subhransu Das who brings to the table an enticing aura of believability. The dialogues written by the film’s lead Sharib Hashmi never become top-heavy with message-mongering, nor does the going get excessively verbose as it did in the recent cross-border film Kya Dilli Kay Lahore.

It’s astonishing how director Nitin Kakkar averts all the corny...

Ali Abbas Zafar On 6 Years Of Salman Khan’s Bharat
Image
talking with Subhash K Jha, director Ali Abbas Zafar delves into his drama Bharat, which starred Salman Kham, Katrina Kaif, Tabu, and Kumud Mishra.

How do you look back on the Bharat experience?

Bharat had been one of the most challenging films of my career , a journey of a man and nation together , to tell a story of evolution of the nation through the main character’s eyes . Bharat was most the most fascinating aspect of Bharat .

Salman Khan went through the ageing process of his character?

According to me it’s one of most powerful performances of Salman Khan, also Katrina Kaif and Kumud Mishra were outstanding. Tabu in a special role made the film an emotional rollercoaster . Sunil Grover as Vilayati was also very strong in the film .

Bharat remains a flawed but fascinating film?

A film is an emotion. If after six years if people still talk...

Rajit Kapur On Shyam Benegal’s 1996 film Sardari Begum
Image
Shyam Benegal’s classic Sardari Begum which completes 29 years on May 23 starred Kirron Kher, Amrish Puri, Smriti Mishra and Rajit Kapur. In a conversation about the film with Subhash K Jha, Rajit Kapur reminisces on the making of the film and his challenging character.

Your memories of Sardari Begum?

Yes, there are memories. Most of it was shot in Film City here in Mumbai. Very interesting for me because the character came straight after playing Mahatma Gandhi in Shyam Benegal’s The Making of the Mahatma.

It was a complete switch?

This halo of the good Samaritan I was able to shed by playing this lecherous pimp. And the interesting thing was that I was playing three different ages and there were just about two scenes in each of these age groups. So, yeah, I found it meaty and challenging to, you know, have these just two scenes in each...

“The Diplomat” Box Office: John Abraham’s Latest Release Collects Rs. 4 Crore on Day 1
Image
John Abraham’s newest film, The Diplomat, has premiered in theaters, and initial box office figures have been released. Despite competing with Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava, The Diplomat has successfully established itself, earning an impressive Rs. 4 crore on its opening day.

Directed by Shivam Nair, The Diplomat is inspired by true events, recounting the harrowing tale of Uzma Ahmed, an Indian woman who finds herself trapped in Pakistan after being misled into marriage. John Abraham portrays J P Singh, the Indian diplomat who plays a crucial role in her rescue.

The film’s release coincided with the Holi festival, which may have influenced its initial performance. However, as the weekend approaches, expectations for The Diplomat’s growth are high. The film has recorded a commendable footfall of 20.45 percent, and industry analysts remain optimistic about its future.

Anurag Kashyap Lauds John Abraham’s Performance In The Diplomat: “After A Long Time I Am…”
Image
What Did Anurag Kashyap Say About John Abraham’s The Diplomat? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

John Abraham has become one of Bollywood’s leading faces in action and patriotic films. From Dhoom (2004), Force (2011), Madras Cafe (2013), to Parmanu (2018), and Batla House (2019), John’s filmography is dominated by intense, adrenaline-pumping roles. His ability to command the screen with his physicality and intense performances has made him a go-to choice for action-packed entertainers.

However, while his films have consistently performed well at the box office, critics often noted that his acting prowess remained overshadowed by the larger-than-life action sequences and patriotic themes. Now, with The Diplomat, directed by Shivam Nair, John Abraham is earning praise for a performance that strips away the heroics and instead delves into the complexities of a real-life character.

“The Diplomat Is A Frill-Free No-Nonsense Edge-of-the-Seater” – A Subhash K Jha Review

The Diplomat

Starring: John Abraham, Sadia Khateeb, Kumud Mishra

Director: Shivam Nair

There is a sense of mounting tension in The Diplomat that sets it apart from most political thrillers, which either get embroiled in too much jingoism or end up tying themselves in knots in trying to please everyone.

Although this is a story of an unsung hero, there are no trumpets blaring from rooftops. Director Shivam Nair(where has he been hiding himself?) keeps the proceedings brisk but never over-the-top as he pierces into a slice of recent history: in 2017, India’s deputy High Commissioner to Pakistan, J.P.Singh found himself in an unprecedented situation when an Indian woman Uzma rushed into the Indian High Commission in Islamabad seeking asylum and passage to freedom back home.

From this intriguing beginning, writer Ritesh Shah constructs a narrative that is at once topical and tactile. There are no rough edges,...

This Day That Year: Subhash K Jha On Anubhav Sinha‘s Thappad
Image
This time in his terrific This Day That Year feature series Subhash K Jha looks at Anubhav Sinha’s Thappad, which released in 2020 and featured the brilliant Taapsee Pannu.

Damaged humanism, fractured emotions, and flawed relationships are the crux of Great Cinema. If there was no Auschwitz, there would be no Schindler’s List. If Madhubala had not died so young, would we still think of her as being so unattainable? And if Romeo and Juliet had lived happily ever after, would Shakespeare’s play have become a timeless classic?

Thappad is a flawed but important film on a fractured marriage. Like director Anubhav Sinha’s earlier monumental works Mulk and Article 15, Thappad tears at the hypocrisy of the middle class to show how pathetically short we fall as a collective nation when it comes to basic human rights even within the four walls of private homes.

The issue in Thappad is ostensibly solvable.

Subhash K Jha Revisits Aiyaary As It Clocks 7 Years On February 16
Image
Subhash K Jha revisits Neeraj Pandey’s political drama Aiyaary as it clocks seven years on February 16th.

Neeraj Pandey is no Costa-Gavras. But for our hard-earned bucks, this filmmaker delivers a forceful message on subterfuge in the defence hierarchy better than any Indian filmmaker. One day, I hope to see him do a film on Bofors and then the Rafel deal to complete his defence trilogy.

At first, Aiyaary seems less seamless than it actually is. Where is all this leading to? You wonder at the outset, as writer-director Neeraj Pandey sets up what eventually turns out to be pieces of a jigsaw that fits perfectly into the mindboggling zigzag of India’s political conditioning in contemporary times.

It is very hard to point out plot points in Aiyaary that stand out to build the compelling construct on corruption in military forces. It seems miraculous that Siddharth Malhotra, playing an army renegade,...

Revisiting Akshay Kumar’s Jolly LLB2
Image
Subhash K Jha takes another look at Jolly LLB2 as it hits 8 years since it released. Plus, we hear from star Akshay Kumar about the film in a throwback interview

Whether played by Arshad Warsi or Akshay Kumar, the small-town lawyer’s socio-political awakening is heartwarming, to say the least. While Jolly Llb 2 is suffused with a swarming, all-pervasive social conscience that ribs our guilt-ridden middle-class values and elbows our cynicism and slothfulness out of our range of activity, it suffers from a sense of overweening ambition.

Everything here is much larger than Jolly Llb, the 2013 sleeper hit about a lazy lawyer played with judicious jocosity by Arshad Warsi, who takes on a cause-celebre that turns him into a responsible citizen. Arshad’s Jolly made us cheer for his growth into conscientiousness.

Again, writer-director Subhash Kapoor has his heart and conscience in the right place. Akshay Kumar’s sincerity...

‘Ic-814: The Kandahar Hijack’ Cast And Character Guide
Image
Netflix’s Ic-814: The Kandahar Hijack revolves around the tragic events of December 24th, 1999, when an Indian passenger plane was hijacked by some Islamist militants while it was flying to Delhi from Kathmandu. At that point in time, the flight had some 176 passengers onboard, along with the crew and their brave captain, Devi Sharan. Despite the Indian government’s initial reluctance to negotiate with terrorists, the officials managed to bring the passengers back to India safely. Anubhav Sinha’s Ic-814 plays like an intense thriller that realistically captures the ordeal hostages went through. So, without any further ado, let’s find out more about these unsung heroes through our cast and character guide.

Captain Devi Sharan

Vijay Varma once again proves his incredible talent by portraying Captain Devi Sharan (or Sharan Dev) in Ic-814: The Kandahar Hijack. We’ve seen Vijay deliver powerful performances in Darlings and Mirzapur, and he doesn’t disappoint here either.

“Ic 815 The Kandahar Hijack Defines The Edge-of-the-Seat Experience” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
For six gripping and flab-free episodes of Anubhav Sinha’s revisitation of the Kandahar hijacking, I forgot to breathe. Yes, it is that engaging. So for those who may want to ask, ‘Why another series on the oft-visited Kandahar hijack episode?’ the answer is elementary: no matter how many times you visit a shameful chapter of history, for example the holocaust, you come up with a new perspective on what precipitates a historic mess up of this magnitude.

In this case, the hijacked plane had landed for emergency fuelling in Amritsar. The hijackers could have been nabbed at this point in the crisis. Redtapism blew our chances. As it often does.

Anubhav Sinha doesn’t make the same mistake. He reconstructs the entire episode with a vigour that repudiates any technical error. Sinha is in his element here, mixing the authenticity of documentation with the rigours of fictionalization. The end-result is steady ….and heady.

The militants are then shown torturing the passengers.

We learn that there are a total of 176 passengers on board, but the hijackers have made no demands. While many blame Vijay for taking off from Amritsar airport, his wife, played by Pooja Gor, has unwavering faith in him. The trailer also shows Indian and Pakistani diplomats in conversation, trying to resolve the crisis. The video ends with Vijay attempting to land the plane, communicating with Lahore Atc, and stating that the aircraft has run out of fuel.

“Mr & Mrs Mahi, Charming Blend Of Marital Drama & Cricket” -A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Mr & Mrs Mahi

Starring Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao

Directed by Sharan Sharma

Mr & Mrs Mahi is bright and revealing in that rare kind of way where the cinematic emotions never drown the underlining lifelike wisdom.

At one point, Kumud Mishra asks his screen-wife Zarina Wahab if she got a particular line from the WhatsApp.

“No, I got it from life,” she replies with a smile.

Sweeping the WhatsApp generation off its collective feet Mr & Mrs Mahi takes the audience into a traditional Basu Chatterjee romcom and emerges from the joyride with a film that is original and endearing.

Mr & Mrs Mahi starts off as a marriage between two cricket lovers who discover the big secret about one another on their wedding night. The early scenes sparkle with a coltish synergy. Nothing that Mr Mahi says to his Missus is particularly smart , and that’s the perfect pitch for this couple.
