The 10 Worst HBO Miniseries, Ranked
Image
There are few institutions in the world of American audiovisual entertainment more reliable than the HBO miniseries. For the past four decades, the premium cable network that become synonymous with high-production, high-quality television at the turn of the 21st century has been exercising particularly dutiful creative control when it comes to its short, one-season-only offerings; in some ways, those shows stand as even more direct and representative "HBO responses to auteur cinema" than even the network's proper made-for-tv movies.

Still, in all those years, there have been some duds — including both co-productions between HBO and British networks and all-American concoctions. As evidenced by the number of miniseries that rank among the best HBO shows, the channel has a truly impressive track record in the miniseries department, such that even No. 10 on this list isn't completely unwatchable or anything. But, as you move further down this list, you will find that...

How Authors Like Jenny Han, Michael Connelly, Cheryl Strayed and Taffy Brodesser-Akner Are Increasingly Involved in Their TV Adaptations
Image
The level of solidarity among striking WGA writers has been a powerful force during these first few weeks of the writers strike. Seeing it in action on picket lines is a good reminder for the industry at large that there’s a special camaraderie among those who know what it’s like to stare at a blank screen, search for inspiration and then type away at draft after draft to get the words just right.

That’s true for novelists as much as it is for screenwriters. Often those are one and the same — and because we live in an age where pre-sold IP usually makes it easier to sell a TV project, there have never been more series based on books than there are right now.

I don’t have the numbers to back me up on that, but we’re still living in peak TV times. Which means...

Who Were the ‘White House Plumbers’ Behind Watergate?
Image
This article contains details from real life events that will likely spoil upcoming episodes of HBO’s White House Plumbers.

Having learned most of what I know about the Watergate scandal from Mad magazine, it took me a while to realize White House Plumbers is a satire. The five-part HBO series telling the true story of the secret unit inside President Richard M. Nixon’s White House begins with The New York Times, not necessarily renowned for its comedic prowess. The story got the paper labeled as scions of “liberal media,” another term seemingly rendered spoof by the stringent journalistic standards of the periodical. The White House Plumbers pulled out their tools to stop the leaking of the Pentagon Papers, and hit a water main. It appears predestined they would get clogged at a place called the Watergate.

The limited series begins with a disclaimer warning none of the names...

Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux in White House Plumbers (2023)
White House Plumbers Review: A Broad, Tonally Haphazard Farce
Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux in White House Plumbers (2023)
HBO’s White House Plumbers is born out of a simple truth: that the events that occurred at the Watergate Office Building on June 17, 1972, while accounting for one of the most seismic political scandals in American history, were profoundly stupid. By walking us through each step in the planning, execution, and attempted cover-up of the operation, Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck’s five-part limited series—based on Egil and Matthew Krogh’s 2007 book Integrity—effectively underlines just how braindead the whole thing was, even as it struggles to wring many laughs from its depiction of the events.

“No names have been changed to protect the innocent, because nearly everyone was found guilty” reads the opening title card, accompanied by a jazzy, Ocean’s Eleven-esque number as our suited-and-booted burglars stride confidently into the Watergate building. They almost immediately encounter a door that they’re unable to unlock and have no choice but to retreat.

White House Plumbers Trailer: Woody Harrelson And Justin Theroux Do Dirty Deeds For Richard Nixon
Image
The story of Watergate is one that truly feels stranger than fiction. It contains every element that a good, fictional espionage story has, and yet, it was actually something that a standing U.S. president and his cronies concocted. It was a truly baffling time in this country's history, which is probably why we are still making movies and television shows about it to this day.

"White House Plumbers" is the latest limited series to tackle the infamous Watergate scandal, but this time, the spotlight is not on former disgraced president Richard Nixon. Instead, the HBO miniseries will follow the lives and lies of E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), two of the so-called "plumbers" that burglarized the Democratic National Committee's headquarters in 1972. Needless to say, the careful mission to ensure the success of Nixon's reelection campaign didn't go as planned, resulting in arguably the United States' biggest political scandal.

Image
The first teaser for “White House Plumbers,” a new HBO limited series about the Watergate Scandal, was released this Friday. In addition, HBO announced that the series will premiere March 2023.

Taking inspiration from the 2007 book “Integrity” by Richard Nixon administration lawyer Egil Krogh — who is played in the series by “Mad Men” actor Rich Sommer — and Matthew Krogh, “The White House Plumbers” recounts the Watergate break-in of the Democratic National Committee’s headquarters in 1972, from the perspective of E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), members of the “White House Plumbers” group tasked with stopping leaks of classified information who plotted the break-in that failed and eventually led to the collapse of Nixon’s administration. The series follows Hunt and Liddy as they desperately try to minimize the fallout of the breakout, and examines how the events impacted their personal lives.

‘The White House Plumbers’ Resumes Production With Additional Protocols After Investigation Into “Alleged Unprofessional Behavior” On Set Of HBO Series
Image
Exclusive: Filming on HBO’s The White House Plumbers resumed August 12, sources tell Deadline.

Production on the five-part Watergate limited series, starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux, was suspended August 5 following an on-set incident involving series director/executive producer David Mandel and a member of the prop department that triggered an investigation. The probe has concluded.

Mandel’s outburst, which is believed to have led to the prop department walking off the set in protest, was captured on audio recording, which Deadline has reviewed. In it, Mandel is heard using the F-word and threatening the prop master that he will never work again.

Mandel and The White House Plumbers‘ prop staff, including the prop master involved in the verbal altercation, are all back at work and remain on the show, sources said. As a result of the investigation, HBO has put additional protocols in place for the remainder of the shoot,...

Deadline, which first reported the production pause, cited unnamed sources who said the alleged behavior centered on an altercation between director and executive producer David Mandel and a member of the props department that occurred on Wednesday.

It is unclear how long production, which is taking place in New York, will be paused.
