How ‘Severance’ assembled its ‘out-of-the-box’ Emmy-worthy cast — and the actor who made a ‘next-level’ audition tape
Image
With Ben Stiller at the helm and a boatload of Emmy nominations for its first season, you’d think the Severance team would be overwhelmed with actors coveting a role. You wouldn’t be wrong.

“Obviously we got a lot of calls about people wanting to be in the show,” the show’s casting director, Rachel Tenner, tells Gold Derby. But with those calls comes lots of polite passes. “Unfortunately it just doesn't creatively work.”

Tenner, who has teamed with Stiller for more than a decade, since pre-production on 2013’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (a project that featured future Severance actors Adam Scott and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson), is up for her second Emmy for casting the buzzy Apple TV+ series. She praises Stiller and show creator Dan Erickson as being “very collaborative.”

Lou Diamond Phillips and Elisha Pratt on Getting the Details Right in Indigenous Crime Drama ‘Keep Quiet’
Image
Tribal warfare is in the air in Vincent Grashaw’s crime drama Keep Quiet. Lou Diamond Phillips stars as Teddy, a weathered tribal cop who, with his new trainee, Sandra (Dana Namerode), must find ruthless fugitive Richie, played by Elisha Pratt (Killers of the Flower Moon, True Detective). After all, Richie’s return to their rural Indigenous reservation “has exposed its darkest secrets and could ignite a violent gang war.”

That is the menacing set-up for Keep Quiet, which world premieres in an out-of-competition spot at the 78th edition of the Locarno Film Festival on Friday, a year after the director debuted boxing drama Bang Bang at the Swiss fest.

Nick Stahl, Irene Bedard, Lane Factor and Kimberly Guerrero round out the ensemble cast of the film, which is based on a screenplay by Zach Montague. Visit Films is handling international sales on the project.

Amazon’s ‘War of the Worlds’ Movie Isn’t So Bad It’s Good. It’s Just Very, Very Bad
Image
Since the 1897 publication of H.G. Wells’ novel The War of the Worlds, the story and its subsequent adaptations has served as the quintessential allegory for the power struggles that shape our world — and a time capsule of the media that informs us about them. There was the Orson Welles-directed radio broadcast that actually convinced listeners that aliens were attacking Earth; the 1953 technicolor version starring Gene Barry that evoked the newscaster era of WWII; and Steven Spielberg’s 2005 take starring Tom Cruise, which narrowed in on 24-hour news and...

One of the biggest things that Sandra says she and Jennifer have been able to support each other through is the fact that they’ve each had issues with stalkers.

“It makes me think, ‘Do I really have to go outside and navigate the world?’” Sandra said in Jennifer‘s Vanity Fair cover story. “There’s the cases where they got into the house, the cases where they’re outside the house, the cases where you’re on a film set and they figured out where you are, and the cases that no one hears about.

'Superstore' Fan-Favorite, Jon Miyahara, Dead at 83
Image
Jon Miyahara, the beloved actor behind Superstore’s most unshakeable employee, has died. He was 83. Miyahara, who portrayed the stoic and mostly silent Brett Kobashigawa on NBC’s hit workplace comedy from 2015 to 2021, was remembered by castmate Colton Dunn in an Instagram post shared earlier this week. Dunn confirmed the news but did not reveal a cause of death or specific date. “Jon was a really awesome guy and as a performer could speak volumes with just a look,” Dunn wrote. “He was such a memorable part of the Cloud 9 team. It was an honor to know him and work with him. I was lucky enough to meet some of his family and my thoughts are with them.”

Appearing in 105 of Superstore’s 113 episodes, Miyahara’s Brett was a masterclass in deadpan comedy — often delivering more with a silent stare than others could with a punchline. For nearly the entire series,...

Amazon Will Still Take and Fulfill Orders During An Apocalypse, According to Amazon’s ‘War of the Worlds’
Image
Warning: contains spoilers for Prime Video’s 2025 adaptation of War of the Worlds.

Last week, Prime Video dropped its new straight-to-streaming take on War of the Worlds. H.G. Wells’ original novel was published in 1898, which means it’s in the public domain, and contemporary artists can do whatever they want with the source material. Apparently, that includes turning it into dogshit.

If you’ve somehow missed the novel and its many adaptations — including a recent series that ran for three seasons and starred Gabriel Byrne, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Elizabeth McGovern, but which hid from us all on the usually forgotten premium movie network Epix — War of the Worlds is about a terrestrial invasion by aliens from Mars, who feed on human blood. The novel is a first-person narrative, and thus lent itself to Orson Welles’ interpretation. In his 1938 radio play, a broadcaster reports on the invasion beat by beat,...

Jon Miyahara Dies: ‘Superstore’ Silent Scene-Stealer Was 83
Image
Jon Miyahara, who recurred as the stoic, mostly silent Cloud 9 employee Brett Kobashigawa on all six seasons of NBC’s 2015-2021 workplace comedy Superstore, has died. He was 83.

His death was confirmed on Instagram by Superstore cast mate Colton Dunn. Neither a cause of death nor specific date of death was cited.

Dunn wrote that Miyahara “was a really awesome guy and as a performer could speak volumes with just a look. He was such a memorable part of the Cloud 9 team. It was an honor to know him and work with him. I was lucky enough to meet some of his family and my thoughts are with them.”

Appearing in all but eight of the series’ 113 episodes, Miyahara rarely spoke, his character most often providing silent, deadpan stares as punctuation to comic or outlandish scenes. His only memorable line of dialogue – “Oh, shit” – coming when a tornado tore through the store.

‘Bookish’ Ending Explained & Series Recap: Who Killed Mr. Victor Orr?
Image
Bookish, directed by Carolina Giammetta, goes beyond just being a whodunit. It transports you back to the mid-1940s and gives you a rather profound insight (particularly for this genre) into the life and times of the people from that era. It sheds light on the socio-political landscape of the country and makes us privy to the struggles of a closeted gay man living in an orthodox society. The detailing, the intricate world-building, and the nuanced performances make you feel like you are watching a social commentary rather than just a Sherlock-esque murder mystery. Book, aka Gabriel, as the name suggested, was the owner of a bookstore in London who had a knack for solving murder mysteries. Such was his reputation that Inspector Bliss never failed to seek his advice while handling a complicated case. The local sergeant, Morris, didn’t like the fact that a civilian, time and again,...

War Of The Worlds | Attempting to explain that ending
Image
Now on Prime Video, the cyber thriller reimagining of War Of The Worlds – starring Ice Cube – left us with a bunch of questions about its ending.

Nb: The following contains spoilers for War Of The Worlds (2025) and the 1898 novel.

Multiple generations of filmmakers have taken Hg Wells’ genre defining alien invasion novel The War Of The Worlds and given it a fresh spin. The 1953 version, directed by Byron Haskin and produced by George Pal, moved the 1898 book’s events to the USA, where humanity was saved by the common cold and the divine grace of God. Steven Spielberg’s 2005 version was updated for a world still reeling from the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

This new 2025 edition, directed by Rich Lee and produced by Timur Bekmambetov, takes the narrative into truly uncharted territory. It imagines the invasion from the perspective of a government security analyst, played by Ice Cube. It’s a cyber thriller with conspiracy elements.

War of the Worlds Review: This Invasion Is Sponsored by Amazon
Image
The periodic return to H.G. Wells’ classic invasion story often reveals something about the anxieties of the era. This new adaptation of War of the Worlds updates the tale for a time defined by digital screens and constant surveillance. The film’s core conceit is to confine the entire global catastrophe to the computer desktop of one man.

That man is Will Radford, a Department of Homeland Security analyst portrayed by Ice Cube. From his government office, Will must watch and attempt to manage the arrival of hostile extraterrestrials through a frantic mosaic of video calls, hacked surveillance feeds, and shaky news clips. The result is a story that filters an apocalyptic event through a very strange and constrained lens, creating a peculiar cinematic document of a world ending not with a bang, but with a barrage of notifications.

Sofía Vergara’s Look Alike Sister, Sandra Vergara: How Does She Make Her Money?

Sofía Vergara‘s Sandra Vergara has joined the cast of Netflix’s Selling Sunset Season 9. However, it is surprising given that the Vergara sister has little experience when it comes to real estate sales. According to RadarOnline, she obtained her California realtor license only on May 15, as per government records.

Joining the cast of the show means that Vergara is now part of the elite real estate brokers, The Oppenheim Group, who sell luxurious LA apartments in the show. The outlet also revealed that Sandra Vergara could have been cast in the Netflix show before she got her realtor’s license. While Selling Sunset is her latest gig, she earned her money from a thriving modelling and TV career.

She began modelling at the age of 24 and has appeared for reputed magazines like Maxim, Esquire, and Regard. She made her acting debut in the Peruvian drama film Days of Santiago...

From ‘Survivor’ to ‘The Traitors’ to ‘Dondi’ and Back, Parvati Shallow Reveals How She Learned to Love Playing the Villain
Image
If you consider yourself a fan of competition reality TV, then you are more than likely well aware of one Parvati Shallow. Even if you’re not a connoisseur of the genre, the “Survivor” mainstay is arguably the castaway who has most permeated into the rest of popular culture.

However, despite her villainous reputation, the “Survivor: Fans vs. Favorites” winner and “Heroes vs. Villains” runner-up never really saw herself as a villain. In fact, as she details in her new memoir “Nice Girls Don’t Win: How I Burned It All Down to Claim My Power,” Shallow’s life story is a lot more nuanced than even multiple-season arcs of television can translate.

“This book is my entire life’s work. It is my memoir, from start to finish. I was born in a Hindu spiritual commune in Florida run by a guru, and that’s the blueprint of how...

Why Sandra Oh's Cristina Yang Left Grey's Anatomy
Image
People come and go on "Grey's Anatomy" all the time. The long-running medical drama created by Shonda Rhimes was introduced as a mid-season replacement back in 2005 and has seen a lot of main cast members join and leave the show over the years; even its titular "Grey," Ellen Pompeo's Meredith, "left" the series in November 2022. But what about Meredith's "person" Dr. Cristina Yang, the cardiothoracic superstar played by Sandra Oh for the show's first 10 seasons?

Cristina is one of the show's five original surgical interns — alongside Meredith, Dr. George O'Malley (T.R. Knight), Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), and Dr. Isobel "Izzie" Stevens (Katherine Heigl), all of whom also leave the show and its fictional Seattle-based hospital behind at some point — and pretty early in the series, it's established that she and Meredith are best friends. Despite her relationships with other doctors on "Grey's Anatomy," like cardiothoracic attending Dr.

'It's Sort of Died Out Now:' 28 Days Later Director Reveals the Title's Meaning
Image
28 Days Later seemed a straightforward title for a film about an outbreak, but then that magic number keeps appearing in the sequels. Danny Boyle and Alex Garland dispel the mystery with a Millennial reference.

It's easy to assume that 28 Days Later alludes to the movie's events, the immediate aftermath of the Rage Virus outbreak. It turns out fans of the franchise are way off base. "The title was based on… it used to be when you returned goods, [28 days] was what you always had," director Boyle explained via Cinemablend. "[Back] then it was like, you have 28 days in which to return this good, to get your money back, or stuff like that. It was a common usage [sort] of thing. It's sort of died out now, but that's where we got it from."

Writer Alex Garland confirmed this in an interview with Jake's Takes. He acknowledged the number 28's significance in...

Sandra Oh Calls Being On Grey's Anatomy The "Most Challenging Decades Of My Life"
Image
Sandra Oh starred as Dr. Cristina Yang in Grey's Anatomy for 10 years, and according to the actress, that decade was a stressful time for her. The ABC medical drama premiered in 2005, and Oh was an original cast member. Cristina was one of the five surgical interns in season 1, alongside Meredith Grey, George O'Malley, Izzie Stevens, and Alex Karev, placing her among the most important figures in the series. As such, Oh had a lot of work to do throughout her time on the show. It also didn't help that Oh's Grey's Anatomy character was a fan favorite.

On June 15, 2025, Oh gave a commencement speech at Dartmouth College (the alma mater of Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes). She was one of the few recipients of honorary degrees from the university, alongside Game of Thrones co-creator David Benioff, Olympians Judy Geer and Mikaela Shiffrin, and former MLB pitcher William Greason. In her speech,...

Tommy and Dick Smothers graced Studio 8H twice, in 1982 and 1983.

17 Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas

Moranis and Thomas rode their Canadian bro characters, Sctv’s McKenzie Brothers, to an SNL appearance in 1983, multiple commercials and their own movie.

16 Beau Bridges and Jeff Bridges

Image
Sandra Oh is best known for playing Christina Yang on the hit ABC series Grey's Anatomy. While the show's debut season turned the original cast into television royalty, the actor recently opened up about the challenges she faced during her time on the medical drama.

During her commencement speech at Dartmouth College, Oh said while playing Christina for 10 seasons brought her "financial stability, fame, and privilege," it was also "one of the most challenging decades" of her life. Sandra Oh is getting real about her time on Grey’s Anatomy.

And while this contributed to the creation of a memorable character, my desire to make the dialogue fit and my belief that I knew what was best for the character also caused grief for the writers and for me,” she said while delivering her commencement speech to Dartmouth College’s graduating class.
