With Ben Stiller at the helm and a boatload of Emmy nominations for its first season, you’d think the Severance team would be overwhelmed with actors coveting a role. You wouldn’t be wrong.

“Obviously we got a lot of calls about people wanting to be in the show,” the show’s casting director, Rachel Tenner, tells Gold Derby. But with those calls comes lots of polite passes. “Unfortunately it just doesn't creatively work.”

Tenner, who has teamed with Stiller for more than a decade, since pre-production on 2013’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (a project that featured future Severance actors Adam Scott and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson), is up for her second Emmy for casting the buzzy Apple TV+ series. She praises Stiller and show creator Dan Erickson as being “very collaborative.”

Tribal warfare is in the air in Vincent Grashaw’s crime drama Keep Quiet. His death was confirmed on Instagram by Superstore cast mate Colton Dunn. Neither a cause of death nor specific date of death was cited.

Dunn wrote that Miyahara “was a really awesome guy and as a performer could speak volumes with just a look. He was such a memorable part of the Cloud 9 team. It was an honor to know him and work with him. I was lucky enough to meet some of his family and my thoughts are with them.”

Appearing in all but eight of the series’ 113 episodes, Miyahara rarely spoke, his character most often providing silent, deadpan stares as punctuation to comic or outlandish scenes. His only memorable line of dialogue – “Oh, shit” – coming when a tornado tore through the store.

The 1953 version, directed by Byron Haskin and produced by George Pal, moved the 1898 book’s events to the USA, where humanity was saved by the common cold and the divine grace of God. Steven Spielberg’s 2005 version was updated for a world still reeling from the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

This new 2025 edition, directed by Rich Lee and produced by Timur Bekmambetov, takes the narrative into truly uncharted territory. It imagines the invasion from the perspective of a government security analyst, played by Ice Cube. It’s a cyber thriller with conspiracy elements.

The periodic return to H.G. Wells’ classic invasion story often reveals something about the anxieties of the era. This new adaptation of War of the Worlds updates the tale for a time defined by digital screens and constant surveillance. The film’s core conceit is to confine the entire global catastrophe to the computer desktop of one man.
