David Massey, the veteran record executive who re-launched the legendary record label Arista Records, is retiring from the company after seven years at the helm, Sony Music announced on Monday.
Massey will stay on through the end of June. Sony Music hasn’t announced Massey’s replacement but confirmed that there’s a succession plan, and that Arista would remain a standalone label within the Sony system.
“It has been a great honor to spend this chapter of my career back at Sony Music, working with Rob Stringer, a visionary executive for whom I have the utmost admiration, and with the extraordinary Sony family worldwide,” Massey said in a statement. “Having started the label from scratch nearly seven years ago, I am so proud of the achievements of the team at Arista and our great young artists. I know that Arista will go from strength to strength in the future.

Jp Saxe was planning to do a single release celebration for his upcoming song “Safe,” but instead, he’s pivoting to support those in need out in Los Angeles. On Thursday, the singer announced NY for LA, a benefit on Jan. 22 at Bowery Ballroom to raise money for wildfire relief.

In the wake of the devastating Los Angeles wildfires, the music community has stepped up with financial aid from MusiCares and other forms of monetary and emotional support. The Grammy Award for Song of the Year honors the best in songwriting, including melodic composition and lyrics. While the category sees its fair share of chart-toppers nominated, sometimes we also get a few lesser known but phenomenally penned tunes, like Lana Del Rey’s “A&w” and Bonnie Raitt’s “Just Like That.” This year we might go back to a lineup full of only hits, but there are one or two surprises looming.
Let’s start with the locks. Billie Eilish is a two-time category winner and a Grammy darling, so it’ll be hard for voters to ignore her smash hit “Birds of a Feather” here. Its themes of love but also fear of loss will surely connect with a lot of academy members. Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’s “Die with a Smile” is another sentimental song, and voters love nominating ballads here. Its lyrics are a...

On their new album Hotel Caracas, Mau y Ricky reconnected with their roots in more ways than one: The Montaner brothers packed their bags and flew to Caracas for the first time in 15 years, rekindling their love for a place they left as kids. As they became inspired by their home country, they started making music that rekindled their “love of writing and making music” for the sake of making it, without the pressure of commercial success.

Chris Pine found the recording process for his musical number in the movie Wish to be difficult, but he enjoyed the challenge. The star had to go back and re-record certain moments in order to "fine-tune" the song. Pine says he appreciated the music and lyrics written by Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice, and he wanted to honor their talent.
Wish star Chris Pine has shared how he perfected his musical number. The new Disney animated movie, which explains the backstory of the studio's iconic wishing star, features Pine as the capricious King Magnifico, who hoards the wishes of the people of the kingdom of Rosas. The movie musical, which features songs by Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice with contributions from Jp Saxe, includes Pine delivering the patter-based villain number "This is the Thanks I Get."

It’s Thanksgiving weekend and two new wide releases are opening on Wednesday, “Wish” and “Napoleon,” while “Saltburn” expands wide after a limited debut. And moviegoers still have all of those movies from this past weekend as an option, too. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Disney, the studio that’s had the most success on the extended holiday weekend, will release its latest animated film, “Wish,” on November 22. Disney’s history having huge family hits over Thanksgiving week is somewhat legendary with the studio holding more than 12 of the Top 20 Thanksgiving openings under its belt. Thanksgiving being such a big moviegoing draw is helped by people being out en masse for Black Friday shopping, making that a busy moviegoing day as well.

The reviews for Disney's Wish are mixed, but they say the movie's self-referential nature is likely to appeal to hardcore Disney fans. Some critics argue that the meta element waters down the experience and that true magic can't be recycled. However, the movie's cast and musical numbers have largely been praised.
The first reviews for Disney's Wish have arrived. The movie, which comes as part of the company's centennial celebration, is the 62nd movie in the Walt Disney Animation Studios canon. Originally pitched as a tale that would provide the backstory behind Disney's iconic wishing star, the movie will follow teenager Asha (Ariana DeBose), who befriends an anthropomorphic star after making a wish to save the kingdom of Rosas.
The embargo has now lifted on reviews for the movie, just five days before the official Wish release date. While the critics are mixed, most of their reviews have pointed out...

“I completely turned off my filter and wrote nine of the weirdest verses I’ve ever written and picked my favorite four,” Saxe says of writing “Caught Up On You…. It was a way to clear the pipes creatively, but I ended up being obsessed with the song. It was genuinely fun. It’s still my favorite song on the record.

Ingrid Andress and Sam Hunt have collaborated on the heartbroken new single “Wishful Drinking.” It’s the first new music Andress has released in the wake of her album Lady Like and Hunt’s first new recording since 2020’s Southside.
A sleek, R&b-flavored production with hints of Dobro and acoustic guitar, “Wishful Drinking” gets at a longing for someone that intensifies with a few cocktails. “When I’m a couple in I get optimistic, like you and me are realistic,” Andress sighs, before Hunt joins the party and sings the second verse.

By now, Julia Michaels is a familiar face on the pop landscape. An in-demand songwriter for artists like Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, and Britney Spears, she scored her first Top 20 hit under her own name with her 2017 debut single, “Issues.” But even those who have been following Michaels’ career might not know a key fact about the artist: She’s Latina. Her government name is Julia Cavazos, and she’s of Puerto Rican and Mexican descent on her father’s side. And on her new single, “Only One” — a breezy...

Canadian singer-songwriter Jp Saxe enlisted John Mayer for a performance of “Here’s Hopin'” on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Thursday, July 1st.
Saxe and Mayer delivered the song, mostly, as a delicately stripped-down guitar duet, with Saxe strumming on his acoustic and singing and Mayer providing some deft back-up licks. Near the end of the song, Saxe dropped his guitar and hustled behind an organ, where his keening chords sailed underneath Mayer’s closing solo.

Just a day after winning two Grammys, renowned R&b artist H.E.R. earned her first Oscar nomination. The nom came in recognition of her original song “Fight for You,” which she penned and performed for Warner Bros. Pictures’ Judas and the Black Messiah.

The Grammy Award for Song of the Year is the recording academy’s top songwriting honor. The category this year includes a couple of past winners. One is the defending champion, Billie Eilish, who claimed this award in 2020 for “Bad Guy” as part of her historic Grammy sweep. This year she’s nominated for her standalone single “Everything I Wanted,” which she co-wrote with her brother Finneas, her songwriting partner on most of her music. If they win, they’d be the first ever to take this award in consecutive years.
But Beyonce might have something to say about that.
