Caught up in a criminal enterprise, not only are their lives at risk, but past secrets are uncovered that reveal Matt is actually much less of a beach bum and much more of a grandpa assassin.

In the past, director Tim Brown made it his prerogative to dive right into the deep end of various genres. Take his 2017 creature feature horror film, Devil in the Dark, compared to his 2021 family movie, Buckley’s Chance, which followed a boy and his dog in the Australian outback. Almost as if trying to find a comfortable sweet spot between the two, Brown has now landed in the cinematic space of a violent yet fuzzy action-comedy production that centers around criminal organizations and grandfathers with secret pasts.

The Retirement Plan focuses on Matt (Nicolas Cage), a self-styled beach bum living in the Cayman Islands. Estranged from his daughter Ashley (Ashley Greene), he's more surprised than anyone when his granddaughter Sarah (Thalia Campbell) comes seeking help. The trailer opens with Cage's character, Matt, passing out on the beach when he is approached by his granddaughter, Sarah. She tells him that her mother, Ashley, is in serious trouble. Viewers are then introduced to Ashley, held captive by armed men. However, Matt swiftly defeats them and reunites with his daughter. Matt is then forced to use his skills as an assassin to protect his estranged family and defeat a crime boss.

Falling Forward Films and Productivity Media have launched the trailer for the Nicolas Cage-led action comedy ‘The Retirement Plan.’

When Ashley (Ashley Greene) and her young daughter Sarah (Thalia Campbell) get caught up in a criminal enterprise that puts their lives at risk, she turns to the only person who can help – her estranged and retired beach bum Father Matt (Nicolas Cage).

Their reunion is fleeting as they are soon tracked down by crime boss Donnie (Jackie Earle Haley) and his lieutenant (Ron Perlman). The bad guys get more than they bargained for because Matt is not the wacky character he appears to be.

Nicolas Cage continues to straddle the line between genius and madness as he now plays a surly grandfather who has acquired a special set of skills in his past career. The infamously eccentric actor has the rare distinction of being self-aware of his online reputation while continually feeding the unintentional comedy with his own personal truth. Nicolas Cage plays a retired Caribbean beach bum-turned-assassin in the trailer for The Retirement Plan, an action comedy thriller from writer/director Tim Brown and Falling Forward Films that’s set to hit theaters on Aug. 25.

Cage is Matt, the estranged father of Ashley (Ashley Greene) and her young daughter Sarah (Thalia Campbell), who get entangled in a criminal gang that threatens their lives. Matt, coming to their rescue, is chased down by gang leader Donnie, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and his lieutenant Bobo (Ron Perlman).

To save his family, Matt has to kill a slew of bad guys in a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the criminal gang in hot pursuit. “The old guy. He keeps killing everybody. Everybody!” Bobo exclaims at one point in the trailer.

The cast of The Retirement Plan, Productivity Media's upcoming action-thriller, has been announced and it seems intensely promising. The film will cast Academy-Award winner Nicholas Cage (Ghost Rider) and Ashley Greene (Twilight Series) in the lead roles with Oscar nominee Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Joel David Moore (Avatar), Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters), Emmy-Award winner Lynn Whitfield (The Josephine Baker Story), and Rick Fox (Shameless) summing up the rest of the ensemble.
