The small screen adaptation of 1999 teen drama Cruel Intentions will stream on Prime Video next month. Here’s the trailer.

Cruel Intentions, written and directed by Roger Kumble, is a seminal teen film of the 1990s, planting the plot of Dangerous Liasons firmly in late twentieth century American youth culture. It boasted star making turns from Selma Blair, Ryan Phillipe and Reese Witherspoon. It’s also the film that helped launch the big screen career of Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Now, Cruel Intentions is heading to the small screen in a fresh modern take courtesy of Amazon Prime Video. Many versions of a television adaptation have been attempted in the past, including a 2016 pilot which saw Gellar reprise her role, but ultimately none of them gained any traction. Last December, Prime Video is gave a series order to Cruel Intentions, an eight-episode television series inspired by the teen romantic drama that starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair, and was released back in 1999. Now the show is set to have its worldwide Prime Video premiere on November 21st – and with that date just a month away, a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

At one stage, a television version did see the light of day, but it was released as Cruel Intentions 2, thanks to some hasty re-editing in post-production (and it didn’t share the lead cast of the film).

The idea of Cruel Intentions being made into a series has floated around for years, and finally, Amazon has confirmed they’ve ordered the twisted romantic drama to series at Prime Video. Season one will consist of eight episodes and has I Know What You Did Last Summer‘s Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher on board as writers and executive producers.

The 1999 film starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Reese Witherspoon was written and directed by Roger Kumble, and Kumble will be involved in the series as an executive producer. Neal H. Moritz produced the R-rated romantic drama and is on board the series as an executive producer.

Released on March 5, 1999, the sleeper hit grossed $76 million worldwide off a budget of just $10 million.

Prime Video’s forthcoming Cruel Intentions adaptation has fleshed out its cast following the exits of two previously announced stars.

Savannah Lee Smith (Gossip Girl) and Khobe Clarke (Firefly Lane) have officially joined as series regulars, while Claire Forlani (CSI: NY), Nikki Crawford (9-1-1), Isabella Tagliati (Scuba) and Zeke Goodman (I Know What You Did Last Summer) are set to recur. Forlani is replacing Laura Benanti who exited the project in June. Myra Molloy is also no longer on the roster.
