Episode 14 of When Life Gives You Tangerines is almost like a stand-alone episode because it shifts narratives from Geum-Myeong, the eldest, competent, perfect daughter of the Yang family, to Eun-Myeong, the not-so-perfect second child who was reminded that he will always be only second-best. At the end of thirteenth episode of the show, Eun-Myeong is arrested soon after Geum-Myeong’s wedding. In episode 14, we see Ae-Sun’s struggles of juggling being a good mother and being a good mother to her daughter. I think you’ll understand this a bit more once we get further into this episode. But after every cold winter comes a bright and beautiful spring full of risks, and boy, does this family take its risks. This episode definitely feels a little bit weaker than the rest of the show overall, but this is not to say it’s a bad episode. It’s just different somehow,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has sent a statement to members, apologizing for not publicly supporting No Other Land co-director Hamdan Ballal after his recent assault and arrest in the West Bank, in the village of Susiya, his hometown.
On Monday, Yuval Abraham — an Israeli director and one of the four directors behind No Other Land, which won the Oscar for best documentary feature film — claimed on X (formerly Twitter) that a group of settlers had beaten the Palestinian filmmaker, who members of the Israeli military later detained. Abraham said Ballal was released the following day but had “injuries in his head and stomach.”

Academy Apologizes for Not Naming ‘No Other Land’ Director Hamdan Ballal in Condemnation of Violence
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences apologized Friday for withholding explicit support for the Oscar-winning co-director of documentary “No Other Land” Hamdan Ballal after he was beaten and detained in the West Bank last week.
The film organization had sent an email to its members on Wednesday condemning violence. That email did not name the documentary’s title or the name of its co-director, and it drew widespread condemnation from members, around 700 of whom at the time of publishing signed an open letter on Friday morning that read, in part, “It is indefensible for an organization to recognize a film with an award in the first week of March, and then fail to defend its filmmakers just a few weeks later.”
On Friday afternoon, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang sent an email to their nearly 11,000 members that read, “On Wednesday, we sent a letter in...

Six years before the critically acclaimed “Spring Tide,” Yang Lina crafted an even bolder film about women in China, this time fearlessly exploring female desire and its repression within the constraints of the particular social system, while also weaving in elements of the supernatural.

The latter, in particular, presents a challenge, as she is cared for by a largely incompetent caretaker, forcing Lei to step in frequently. Despite professing deep love for his grandmother, Lei’s husband offers little help, but this is not the biggest issue she has with him.
Her sexual frustration reaches a breaking point, as despite her advances, he is only interested in playing video games in bed.

Grey’s Anatomy has been such a staple of network television for so long that it might seem impossible the show won’t just continue to reinvent itself year after year with new interns, relationships, character clashes, and zany medical cases indefinitely. Nothing lasts forever, though, and some fans think the latest news about the now-20-year-old drama foretells the endgame. In celebration of the pilot’s birthday, actress Sandra Oh spoke to Entertainment Weekly and reflected on her decision to leave her beloved role as Dr. Cristina Yang … and she left the door open to a possible return. First, Oh responded to the fact that Yang is still an occasional part of the story, brought back through mentions or letters sent from her swanky gig in Switzerland. “I am glad for the show to use the character as they see fit. Absolutely. The character should still be there to service the story— and so,...

When Life Gives You Tangerines episode 16 is earth-shattering in a way that will make you cry for over 20 minutes straight. They say all good things must come to an end, but for a family like the Yangs, it is just as they taste the sweet tangerines that they’re taken away from them as if they don’t deserve it. This is a bit dramatic, but we all know that the Yangs have been through a lot, but it is quite realistic and really reminds us of how precious our lives are on earth. Also, how important it is to always tell our loved ones how we really feel in our hearts. The final episode of the show switches gears and focuses more on Ae-Sun and Geum-Myeong’s relationship with Gwan-Sik. It might be one of the saddest TV episodes I’ve ever seen. But, with that said, let’s...

A number of documentary branch members have reacted angrily to a statement put out Wednesday by AMPAS leaders Bill Kramer and Janet Yang, which suggests that the beating and arrest of recent Oscar-winner Hamdan Ballal is something Academy members will have “many unique viewpoints” on.
Ballal, who won an Oscar earlier this month for co-directing best documentary feature winner No Other Land, was attacked and arrested by the Israeli military on Monday night during a confrontation with settlers that took place on the West Bank, in the village of Susiya, Ballal’s hometown. The Palestinian filmmaker sustained injuries to his head and stomach, and was zip-tied and blindfolded, according to co-director Yuval Abraham, before being released the next day.

The Academy has drawn backlash after issuing a statement to members seemingly addressing criticism for not speaking out in support of Palestinian director Hamdan Ballal — one of the filmmakers behind the Oscar-winning documentary “No Other Land” — who earlier this week was attacked by Israeli settlers and then detained by the Israeli army, according to the Associated Press. The statement, which was sent Wednesday night and signed by Academy CEO Bill Kramer and president Janet Yang, did not mention “No Other Land” or Ballal by name.
“The Academy condemns harming or suppressing artists for their work or their viewpoints,” reads the statement in part. “We are living in a time of profound change, marked by conflict and uncertainty — across the globe, in the U.S. and within our own industry. Understandably, we are often asked to speak on behalf of the Academy in response to social, political and economic events. In these instances,...

Cate Blanchett thinks Hollywood’s most glamorous nights would be better without cameras.
During an appearance on Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang’s Las Culturistas podcast, the trio discussed the invasive nature of social media and phones. Blanchett said of the issue, “There’s so few spaces that you can go now, where you are private. That’s what I loved about the late ’80s, going to all of the dance parties in Sydney for Mardi Gras. People were just there. They were so present, you know, they were just together, collectively, having a great time. It was non-aggressive. No one was being recorded. No one cared what anyone did.”
The conversation shifted to the litany of celebrity annoyances at award shows, like photographers and “lip readers.”

Christopher Gattelli had choreographed 17 previous Broadway shows, winning a Tony Award for Newsies. But this season's Death Becomes Her marks his first time directing, in addition to crafting the dance sequences. “There have been other things that have been bubbling, but I'm just so proud that this is my first,” he exclaims. Gattelli recently sat down with Gold Derby to reflect on bringing the classic comedy to life on the rialto.
Gattelli is quick to praise his “incredible” production team, but he felt surprisingly comfortable during his first stint in the director’s chair. “The path is more clear because I have an overall vision,” he explains. “That's why I think this is the right show for that kind of collaboration with myself. It was more natural for me to come to the stair-fall using a dancer rather than another option. Having the choreographic background and saying like, ‘Oh, we're...

The Wedding Banquet Trailer: Kelly Marie Tran, Lily Gladstone & Bowen Yang Lead Queer Rom-Com Remake
Having delivered one of the best queer rom-coms in recent years with 2022's Austenian blast Fire Island, all eyes have been on director Andrew Ahn to see what the Asian American filmmaker's next feature has in store for us. And what's in store, as it goes, is a buzzy reimagining of Ang Lee's seminal 1993 effort The Wedding Banquet, one of the best queer rom-coms of yesteryear. Meanwhile their friend Min (Gi-chan), the closeted scion of a multinational corporate empire, has plenty of family money but a soon-to-expire student visa. When his commitment-phobic boyfriend Chris (Yang) rejects his proposal, Min makes the offer to Angela instead: a green card marriage in exchange for funding Lee’s IVF. Starring Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Chan and Han Gi-Chan, the Seattle-set film is a reimagining of Ang Lee’s 1993 film of the same name. The trailer shows two couples — Lee (Gladstone) and Angela (Tran), and Chris (Yang) and Min (Han) — at a crossroads. Lee and Angela want to start a family but don’t have the money for IVF treatments. Chris and Min want to stay together, but Min’s visa is about to run out and he hasn’t come out to his grandmother, who will will cut him off if he does.
Min, from a wealthy family in Korea, suggests Angela marries him to solve the visa (and grandmother) problem in exchange for him paying for the couple’s IVF treatments. The film, which premiered at Sundance last month,...

If hearing him on “Las Culturistas” and seeing him in “Wicked” and on “Saturday Night Live” wasn’t enough, Bowen Yang is headed back to the big screen alongside Academy Award-nominee Lily Gladstone, and Kelly Marie Tran in “The Wedding Banquet.” Yang is also joined by “Fire Island” collaborator Andrew Ahn, who serves as director and co-writer on this remake of the classic 1993 LGBTQ rom-com from Ang Lee. Watch the trailer for the film below.
Co-written by the original film’s scribe James Schamus and also starring Han Gi-Chan, Joan Chen, and Oscar-winner Yuh-Jung Youn, the official synopsis for the film reads, “‘The Wedding Banquet’ follows a chosen family of four friends each struggling to navigate their adulthood responsibilities and relationships. This time around, Conan O’Brien must stay.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang announced on Monday, March 17, just a couple weeks after the 2025 Academy Awards, that the Emmy Award-winning writer, producer and comedian will return as the host of the 98th Oscars, reuniting with the Emmy-winning executive producer duo Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan. Longtime O’Brien colleagues Jeff Ross and Mike Sweeney will also return as producers, with the latter also serving as a writer for the show.
The 2025 Oscars, O’Brien’s first time hosting the show, was watched by 19.69 million viewers — a five-year high for the telecast. The former late night host for NBC and TBS also received positive reviews across the board, notably being more engaged with the nominees than his Oscars predecessor Jimmy Kimmel, and less political.

A weak plot and laughable characters sink the South Korean sci-fi disaster film, Project Silence. Unrealistic choices and unlikable characters lead audiences to root for the killer canines, even if their CGI is murky and muddled. Scenes of the collapsing bridge and some of the canine attacks are effective, and the film certainly makes you angry about animal abuse.
Killer CGI mutts make mincemeat out of hapless drivers and a scummy politician in an unintentionally comical South Korean sci-fi disaster thriller. Project Silence will have you laughing out loud for all the wrong reasons. The spectacularly contrived plot falls prey to lame genre tropes while one-note characters do everything possible to make themselves doggy lunch. Self-preservation is clearly not their forte. The action takes place on a collapsing bridge during an impenetrable fog, which means the entire film is purposely dark and hazy. Idiocy runs rampant, but there's admittedly some entertainment value.

In the history of cinema, there have been actors who have taken extreme measures to completely immerse themselves in their roles. As evidenced by Christian Bale’s 62-pound weight loss to play an emaciated insomniac in The Machinist and Shia Labeouf extracting his own tooth for Fury. However, Jeremy Strong may have elevated his method of acting to a whole new level.
Jeremy Strong in Succession (2018) || HBO
Strong portrays the role of Kendall Roy in Succession, a well-acclaimed comedy-drama series. Although the actor’s performance on the show has received positive reviews, Bowen Yang on the other hand believes that Strong may have taken his method acting a bit too seriously.

Early on in Project Silence, before disaster strikes, we’re introduced to Cha Jung-won and his teenage daughter Kyung-min. Jung-won works as an advisor to a presidential candidate while still grieving the loss of his wife. His relationship with Kyung-min suffers as a result. They argue during the drive to the airport, where she will fly abroad for her studies. Little do they know the harrowing ordeal that awaits on the foggy highway bridge.
When thick smog causes a pileup, their journey is blocked by the wreckage. More pressingly, a military convoy carrying experimental dogs for “Project Silence” is caught up in the crash. Meant for anti-terror operations, these canines have been genetically enhanced and behaviorally conditioned, and now their containment is compromised. As the dogs run amok, Jung-won and other survivors must work together to escape the howling horrors and reach safety through the dissolving mists.

A Sudden Glimpse to Deeper Things, Mark Cousins‘ documentary essay about Scottish artist Wilhelmina Barns-Graham and her neurodiversity, including diary passages narrated by Tilda Swinton, won the Grand Prix – Crystal Globe, the top award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff) on Saturday. Clive Owen was honored with a Kviff award at the closing ceremony.
A Sudden Glimpse is “exploring the pivotal 1949 experience atop Switzerland’s Grindelwald glacier that reshaped British modernist painter Wilhelmina Barns-Graham’s artistic perspective for decades to come.” The Crystal Globe comes with a $25,000 prize. “I did not expect this in a million years,” Cousins said in accepting the honor. About Barns-Graham, he said: “She didn’t change the world. But she lived completely, fully and utterly. Let’s try to do that.”

Chicago-based, China-born writer, director, producer and visual artist Zhengfan Yang knows what it feels like to be a stranger in a strange land — but also back home. If there is such a thing as “home.” His episodic feature Stranger, which had its world premiere in the Proxima competition section of the 58th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff), explores this along with such themes as loneliness and identity. Each episode is set in a different hotel room, “a place where everybody is a stranger.”
The result: seven scenes that, as Kviff organizers put it, tell “absurd, darkly humorous, poignant, and mysterious stories set in a seemingly confined space that nevertheless opens up new and surprising dimensions.”
After graduating from law school, Yang started making films with Shengze Zhu (Present. Perfect), establishing production company Burn the Film with her. Yang has made four feature-length films – Distant (2013, Locarno Film...

Adi Shankar’s Castlevania has received praise through and through. From the first season to the last, following even the spin-off series, praise has become more of a shadow of the fan-favorite Netflix franchise. There are many ways in which the series comes off as unique. Whether it is through the approach of an anime-like adaptation or because of the darkness it is unafraid to dive into, Shankar’s series is one to commend.
Trevor Belmont in Castlevania. Credits: Powerhouse Animation
One of the things that stand out in the series is the complexity of its villains. They are less villains than they are people. Dracula, Death, Isaac, and even Carmilla have their moments to shine as people beyond what makes them human or the lack thereof. They are not evil for the sake of being so, and that changes everything.

Although 2023 Emmy nominations voters were able to view the entire second season of “The Bear” while judging the merits of its first, the team behind the FX series did not employ a similar strategy in 2024. Nonetheless, the newly released third season will still influence TV academy members as they spend part of August deciding whether season two is worthy of any wins. The latest episodes have already impacted the mindsets of Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy predictors, who have collectively boosted its odds in several categories over the past week.
As has been the case since this Emmys season began, “The Bear” currently holds over 80% of the Best Comedy Series win votes in our predictions center. Even now that our number of participating readers exceeds 3,000, none of this category’s other candidates have managed to crack 10%. “The Bear” is also expected to dominate five of the six comedy acting races,...

Anna and Zoe (Sasha Pieterse) are twin sisters, sharing the classic close bond that almost nobody can mess with. This stays true until Anna meets Nick (Parker Young), with the two quickly falling in love. While Anna is romantic and trusting, Zoe is aloof and suspicious, determined to get to the bottom of who Nick really is.
Listen up, Pretty Little Liars fans — the sequel to a storyline that never actually existed just dropped. It comes as no surprise that The Image of You is based on a thriller novel of the same name, just as the storyline closely resembling the hit TV series makes complete sense. If you’re looking for astounding or impressive filmmaking, you’ve come to the wrong place. But if you’re prepared to take absolutely everything you...

Saturday Night Live host Jake Gyllenhaal went through a maze of Southwest employees–and one Hudson News cashier, mistakenly–all in an effort to simply cancel his flight.
While being transferred to nearly ten different people, Gyllenhaal encountered customer service representatives who mispronounced his name all sorts of ways, those with odd racial views, those who demanded something in return, and unreasonably long and indecipherable audio-only confirmation codes, among other things.

The season finale of Saturday Night Live arrives this weekend, and the occasion brought together Jake Gyllenhaal, cast member Bowen Yang, and musical guest Sabrina Carpenter for the traditional Thursday promo.
As usual, it was an exercise in hilarity.
In the first segment, the lads claim to have a Carpenter song stuck in their heads. Only it’s not her song.
Then Yang mentions that Gyllenhaal’s body in Roadhouse was the inspiration for his own fitness journey, before scoffing at the notion.
Finally, the big finish: Where does the name “Carpenter” come from? Watch the clip for the surprising answer.

The Golden Horse Film Festival, which operates the premier awards in the Chinese-language film industry, has teamed up with Cannes’ Marché du Film to showcase a handful of new films and projects under the banner Golden Horse Goes to Cannes.
To be presented May 16, the five films comprise new works from directors Chen Yu-hsun, Yang Ya-che, Huang Xi, Giddens Ko and John Hsu, with such high-profile producers as Lee Lieh, Sylvia Chang, Aileen Li, Jeffrey Chan and Hou Hsiao-hsien.

Henry Kissinger may have only died in November, but the controversial politician is already set to get the satirical comedy treatment.
Tim Roth, Robin Wright, Mary-Louise Parker, Lucy Hale, David Cross, Jimmy O. Yang, Rob Corddry and Dylan Penn are in talks to star in the feature film “Kissinger Takes Paris,” set during Kissinger’s younger, pre-Vietnam War years.
Roth (“The Hateful Eight,” “Sundown”) will star as Kissinger, while Jeff Stanzler will direct from his screenplay, and Claude Dal Farra and Brian Keady of Bcdf Pictures (“To Leslie”) are producing along with Stanzler. CAA Media Finance and Concourse Media are co-representing domestic rights, and Concourse is handling international rights, with sales launching at Cannes.

The companies’ first joint film project is Wife, Witch, Poisoner, Whore, a period thriller based on the Alexander audiobook by Katherine Rundell, and narrated by Helena Bonham Carter.
The official synopsis reads: “Beautiful, rich, clever, and determined English noblewoman Frances Howard was a dazzling celebrity at the court of James I. It was all about mothers at the top of this week’s pre-Mother’s Day Saturday Night Live.

“With so many upsetting stories in the world right now, we thought we’d take a break from a regular cold open and hear some heartwarming stories from our moms instead.”
Still Thompson’s mom said she wanted to see who would play Stormy Daniels in a cold open focused on the porn star’s testimony in former President Donald Trump’s criminal trial. That wasn’t the only reference to...

Dr. Monica Beltran brings a no-nonsense, confident approach to Grey Sloan, reminiscent of Cristina Yang's demeanor. Monica's mentorship style doesn't involve coddling, but rather focuses on demanding excellence from her students. While Monica shares traits with Cristina Yang, she also brings a unique perspective to Grey's Anatomy, so season 21 must delve into her backstory and personal life.
With just 10 episodes, Grey's Anatomy season 20 hasn't had enough time to delve into each of its characters' nuanced lives outside of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Even so, one newly introduced surgeon has a lot of potential; after a decade, she may be the perfect replacement for Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh). Of course, no one can truly take Cristina's place: Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) and Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) have bonded with Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) in a sisterly way, but they're hardly her "person." Still, Grey's Anatomy might have finally found a doctor with Cristina-like edge.

As soon as "Challengers" hit theaters last week, we had a feeling "Saturday Night Live" would be planning some sort of parody around it. Although not a major box office hit, the movie is huge on social media thanks to how absurdly horny and chaotic its love triangle is. It's a conversation-starter for sure, not to mention it's filled with some memorable churro-based phallic imagery.
Although "SNL" sadly couldn't get the movie's lead stars Zendaya, Mike Faist, or Josh O'Connor to host an episode, they have given us the next best thing with a "Challengers"-themed sketch. Only this time, the love triangle's based around Sonny Angel dolls instead of tennis, and Bowen Yang is one of the dolls. Using some charmingly clumsy practical effects and the movie's "stressful but horny" soundtrack, the live sketch lets us watch as Yang's tiny character flirts and argues with Hernández's boyfriend character,...

Is that Tashi Donaldson or Dua Lipa?
Saturday Night Live audiences were treated to a nod at Luca Guadagnino’s latest film Challengers during a sketch featuring host Dua Lipa as a somewhat intense woman who had invited a date over to her apartment — aka SNL featured player Marcello Hernández.
Naturally, one of the first things he notices when he walks into the room is the hundreds of Sonny Angel dolls she has lining her walls.
“They’re companions for 25-year-old working women,” she explains. But, she assures, her date won’t need to compete with her 650+ dolls for her affection…just one.
Cue Bowen Yang, dressed as one of said dolls. Oh, and the Challengers soundtrack.
“I haven’t seen the movie,” Hernández admits, to which Yang replies: “Well, don’t worry, cause you’re about to live it.”

A surprise hit after its release on various streaming platforms, director and writer Yang's short online wuxia film “Eye for an Eye: The Blind Swordsman” (2023) starring Xie Miao as the protagonist went on to generate a fair amount of attention both in Mainland China and overseas. Therefore it is inevitable that a sequel soon follows with both Yang and Xie returning. Though scheduled for a wilder cinema release, the much anticipated and a longer follow-up still ended up streaming on iQIYI.
