Last December, Nick Carpenter had an existential experience onstage. He was standing with the band Dawes, screaming along as they performed their signature song, 2009’s “When My Time Comes.” The moment made Carpenter, who sings and writes songs under the name Medium Build, think about his deepest fears and goals as an artist — namely, about coming to terms with the level of popularity you’ve been gifted rather than constantly worrying about it.
“There’s a huge fear of: If I stopped working, will it all go away?” says Carpenter,...

Oscar night is all about timing.
The challenge is getting it right. You want to be at the best party when it’s peaking (or before), planted in place while the vibes are strong and the crowd remains peppered with people holding 8.5-pound golden statues, and bolting before you’re among the final few on the dance floor in order to catch a wave to the next best thing on Hollywood’s biggest night.
Journalists, like this one, are only allowed inside a handful of Oscar night events, a fact that fortunately helps to keep a hot schedule. There’s the requisite stop at the Academy’s post-show Governors Ball, the Elton John AIDS Foundation viewing party or Vanity Fair. The more exclusive invites — Madonna and Guy Oseary’s The Party or Beyoncé and Jay Z’s Gold Party, for instance — are press free zones. The late-night bashes offer A-listers,...

According to reporting by The Hollywood Reporter, the movie was said to interfere with Daniel and his wife Rachel Weisz‘s schedule. However, some told the outlet that the actor “soured on the role after Queer failed to perform not only at the box office but also in the awards season race.”

Singer and actor Omar Apollo recently made waves by posting a bold full-frontal shot from his new movie ‘Queer.’ Sharing the image online, Apollo joined the celebration for the film’s digital release on platforms like Prime Video and iTunes in the US.
‘Queer,’ directed by Luca Guadagnino, is a daring and visually striking adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ novel. The film stars Daniel Craig as William Lee, a fictionalized version of the author. Lee, an American expat wandering through Mexico, spends his days stumbling from bar to bar, searching for romantic and sexual encounters with men.
Apollo appears early in the film, portraying a man Lee picks up in a bar. Their brief but steamy scenes culminate in an explicit, eye-catching full-frontal moment that has caught the attention of fans and critics alike.
Later in the movie, the focus shifts to Lee’s obsession with Eugene Allerton, played by Drew Starkey.

Daniel Craig's new A24 movie is now available to watch at home following his Golden Globe nomination. The English actor is widely known to audiences for his portrayal of the impossibly suave secret agent in five James Bond movies – Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, Spectre, and No Time to Die. Since his final portrayal in 2021, the 007 franchise has been conducting an exhaustive search for a new James Bond actor, allowing Craig to branch out and experiment with other roles.
Other than Bond, Craig is best known for his portrayal of the Southern sleuth, Benoit Blanc, in Rian Johnson's Knives Out movies, including the original 2019 film, its 2022 sequel Glass Onion, with a third, Wake Up Dead Man, on the way in 2025. The movie Queer is now available to rent or own at home and fans will likely be wondering if Drew Starkey really went full frontal in that scene or not.
The 31-year-old actor, best known for playing Rafe on Netflix’s Outer Banks, bares it all during the movie, but fans have questioned whether that’s all him or if he’s wearing a prosthetic.
Drew has confirmed the answer.

In an interview with Time, Drew revealed he’s wearing a prosthetic over his private parts.
Co-star Omar Apollo wouldn’t confirm or deny if he wore one, but Daniel Craig confirmed he also wore a prosthetic.
“They’re young. They’re young and beautiful,” Daniel said of why he didn’t go full frontal.
Drew was asked about how he broke the ice with his co-stars and he talked about preparing in movement rehearsals.

Luca Guadagnino released two films in 2024, and coming off the energetic “Challengers” was the more introspective “Queer.” The filmmaker’s latest stars Daniel Craig as William Lee, a fictionalized stand-in for author William S. Burroughs, whose slender novel the movie is based on.
The movie premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and later played the New York Film Festival and BFI London Film Festival. A24 acquired the domestic distribution rights to the movie, with Mubi releasing the movie internationally.
But how can you watch Guadagnino’s latest? Read on to find out.
Is “Queer” streaming?
After being released in theaters last November and December, “Queer” is now finally available to rent on Digital. The film will eventually be streaming on Max due to an output deal between the streamer and A24, but a streaming release date has not yet been revealed. “Queer” will also be released on Blu-ray in April.

With every generation comes a moral panic about sex. Usually, the fear is that young people are having too much of it, or that the art they’re consuming — movies and TV, music, even video games — is encouraging reckless and immoral behavior. But the arrival of Gen Z, the first generation to grow up fully online, has upended that narrative. Statistically speaking, they are having less sex than young people of the generations before them, and there is no shortage of cultural discourse around their supposed prudishness. (They’ve even earned the nickname “puriteens.

“Is the sperm still in there?” That’s a question for the ages, but in the case of Luca Guadagnino’s new film, “Queer,” it’s apt in more ways than one. This particular query came (stop it) during a recent interview with Variety where Daniel Craig asked if a shot of sheets stained with semen was kept in the final cut’s establishing scene. In this opening tableaux, Guadagnino’s camera holds on a series of items that evoke the story about to unfold between Craig’s protagonist and the object of his desire, Drew Starkey’s Eugene Allerton. According to Guadagnino, that particular shot Craig’s referring to has since been removed after the actors watched a very early cut, but have no fear, Guadagnino reassures us, because, “Of course, there’s a lot of semen in the movie.”

Luca Guadagnino is continuing his reign of 2024 with the release of the buzzy original soundtrack to “Queer,” as composed by Academy Award winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
The trio — or rather, foursome including screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes — collaborated on both “Queer” and “Challengers” this year, with the score for the latter even becoming a club track and earning a Grammy nomination. Guadagnino, Reznor, and Ross will also work together on “After the Hunt.”
The “Queer” soundtrack boasts original song “Vaster Than Empires” featuring iconic Brazilian singer Caetano Veloso, plus Omar Apollo’s “Te Maldigo.” Guadagnino directed Apollo’s “Te Maldigo” music video; Apollo made his acting debut in “Queer.”
“Vaster Than Empires” is the end credits song written by Reznor and Ross with vocals by Veloso. The lyrics were directly lifted from author William S. Burroughs’ memoirs.

In Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer,” many of the most formative moments are wordless. Although expat William Lee (Daniel Craig) is more free in Mexico City to drink around the clock, shoot heroin and indulge in his gay desires than in America, there still remains a secretive slyness required in expressing his queerness — even in the slovenly cantinas south of the border.
Thus, much of the communication throughout the film falls largely on the clothes. Achieving this subtlety is “sometimes the hardest thing to do in film,” says Jonathan Anderson, the British-Irish fashion designer who oversaw the costume design on “Queer” and last collaborated with Guadagnino on”Challengers.” He turned to the Silent Film Era to help him master this wordless communication. “You have to be able to read character...

Director Luca Guadagnino offers an upsetting response to one country banning Daniel Craig's new Oscar-buzzy movie Queer from getting released there. The new drama, which adapts William S. Burroughs' 1985 novella of the same name, follows Craig's William Lee, a criminal on the run who becomes entranced with expat Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey), forming a romantic connection. Reviews for Queer have been incredibly positive, with the film expected to be nominated for multiple Oscars. However, the movie has been banned in Turkey by authorities, who claim it is "too provocative" for public release.
Now, Variety reports that, while speaking at the jury press conference at Marrakech Film Festival in Marrakech, Morocco, Guadagnino offered an upsetting response to Queer getting banned in Turkey. Encouraging viewers in the country to download the film, he argued against censorship of the movie, saying claims that "the movie was creating social disorder" are unfounded. However,...

Luca Guadagnino has been trying to make his latest movie for all of his adult life. The lauded director and producer of offbeat romantic films like Call Me by Your Name and Challengers sticks to this genre with Queer, an adaptation of legendary beat writer William S. Burroughs’ novella, which delves into loneliness and longing, and a wild ayahuasca journey, while following the writer as he pursues a cagey young American in 1950s Mexico City.
Guadagnino first came upon a copy of Queer when he was browsing a bookstore as a teenager in Palermo, Italy, and he was instantly intrigued, as he explained during a Q&a — with stars Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey and writer Justin Kuritzkes — after the movie’s New York Film Festival premiere.
“In the store, immediately, I was exposed to the unequal language of this amazing writer that I didn’t know,” he said of Burroughs’ semi-autobiographical book.

Luca Guadagnino's latest movie, Queer, has been earning high acclaim since premiering at the Venice Film Festival especially for Daniel Craig's raw and vulnerable performance. Based on William S. Burroughs' unfinished novel of the same name, Queer features many tropes emblematic of the iconic Beat Generation and specific details from the author's life. The end result is a surreal journey through Mexico and South America in the 1950s, and Guadagnino's vision is aided by a smart script penned by Justin Kuritzkes (who also worked with him on Challengers).
Queer centers on Craig's William Lee, often seen as an avatar for the author himself, who lives in an American expat community in Mexico City. He spends his time stumbling from one physical connection to the next, but things change when he meets Eugene Allerton. Their tentative romance is the heart of the story,...

Luca Guadagnino was a lonely boy living in Palermo when he first read William S. Burroughs’ novella “Queer.” He would’ve been 14 when the book first came out in 1985, when gay liberation was already on its cultural downward slope because of AIDS, and the book was written in the early 1950s. But Burroughs’ story of American-expat-in-Mexico Lee and his obsessive romance with a lithe expat American soldier, Allerton, still emerged as an influential text for the queer literary canon but especially for Guadagnino’s imagination education.
Now, nearly four decades after first reading the book at 17, Guadagnino, one of the hottest filmmakers currently working — especially because of his other film this year “Challengers” — has finally realized the dream of bringing Burroughs’ world to the screen. Those men, Lee and Allerton, are played by Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey in respectively career-reinventing and career-inventing performances. And the film, as Guadagnino said...

As an adaptation of “Junkie” author William S. Burroughs’ second novel, “Queer” is about chemical addictions, yes. But it’s even more about being so addicted to a person that, no matter how much you turn yourself inside out trying to get them to love you — charming them with your literary voice, lathering yourself into a stupor on drugs, or even going to the far reaches of a jungle — they will never love you the way you want them to, and even telepathy couldn’t help explain to you why.
Luca Guadagnino’s profound and kaleidoscopic new film begins in a post-World War II Mexico City of the mind and ends in the Ecuadorian rainforest on an ayahuasca trip that’s part Apichatpong Weerasethakul, part “2001: A Space Odyssey,...

A new trailer for Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey‘s new romance movie has been released!
On Monday (November 25), A24 debuted a new trailer for the upcoming movie Queer from director Luca Guadagnino.
Here’s a synopsis of the film: 1950. William Lee (Craig), an American expat in Mexico City, spends his days almost entirely alone, except for a few contacts with other members of the small American community. His encounter with Eugene Allerton (Starkey), an expat former soldier, new to the city, shows him, for the first time, that it might be finally possible to establish an intimate connection with somebody.
Head inside to watch the trailer…
The movie also stars Lesley Manville, Jason Schwartzman, Henrique Zaga, and Omar Apollo.
In a recent interview, Daniel, 56, and Drew, 31, opened up about filming the steamy love scenes for the movie.

On Monday, A24 released a new trailer for “Queer,” director Luca Guadagnino’s lush adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ novella starring Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey.
The film tells the druggy, romantic story of William Lee (Craig), an American expat in Mexico City in 1950. He’s a solitary man, but when he meets the much younger Eugene Allerton (Starkey), a former soldier who has just moved to the city, he develops an intimate connection to another person for the first time.
“Queer” is Guadagnino’s second film of 2024, following “Challengers,” his hit psychosexual tennis drama. He reunites with some of his “Challengers” collaborators for “Queer,” including screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes and composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. In addition to Craig and Starkey, the cast features Jason Schwartzman, Henrique Zaga, Omar Apollo, and Lesley Manville.

"This difficulty is convince someone else he is really a part of you..." Ain't that the truth. A24 has revealed a second official trailer for Queer, the second film from Italian director Luca Guadagnino out this year (he also opened Challengers in spring). Queer, adapted from the William S. Burroughs' novel, first premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival (here's my review) with stops at the Toronto, Zurich, London, and New York Film Festivals as well. Set in the 1950s - Daniel Craig stars as drifter Lee, who recounts his life in Mexico City among American expatriate college students and bar owners surviving on part-time jobs and G.I. Bill benefits. He is compelled to pursue a young man named Allerton, based on Adelbert Lewis Marker. Drew Starkey co-stars as his young infatuation, with a cast including Lesley Manville, Jason Schwartzman, Henrique Zaga, Omar Apollo, & Colin Bates. The film also features...

Omar Apollo is making waves with the release of his latest single, “Te Maldigo,” a hauntingly beautiful ballad inspired by the upcoming A24 film Queer. The song, which marks Apollo’s return to the Spanish-language music scene, is a collaboration with Queer director Luca Guadagnino, who also helms the music video. The single comes just days after the film’s highly anticipated red carpet premiere in…

Omar Apollo may have made his acting debut with “Queer,” but he’s not limiting his collaborations with Luca Guadagnino at just feature films: The duo have reunited for music video “Te Maldigo,” which Apollo announced as a partnership with A24.
The song also brings Grammy-nominated Apollo back with “Queer” composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who also collaborated with Guadagnino on the “Challengers” score.
The video brings audiences into the underground bar scene that “Queer” encapsulates. The video, like the feature, is set in Mexico City post-wwii. Apollo sings onstage in the short film, which debuted at midnight on November 21.
Produced by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who composed the score for the film, “Te Maldigo” is Apollo’s first song entirely in Spanish since 2022’s “En El Olvido.” The track is the first single from Apollo’s sophomore album “God Said No,” which was released in May 2024.

You can say "Yeah x10," because Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross just released a new song from their soundtrack to Queer. This will be the Nine Inch Nails musicians-turned-film scorers' second collab with the director this year; they previously dreamed up Challengers' Grammy-nominated steroid of a score this past spring.

As Luca Guadagnino continues his steady streak of projects––already recently holding a test screening for his next film After the Hunt and reteaming with Daniel Craig for the DC film Sgt. Rock before he takes on an American Psycho remake––he’s also promoting the release of next week’s Queer. Omar Apollo (who makes his acting debut in the William S. Burroughs adaptation) along with composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have teamed for a music video for the track “Te Maldigo,” directed by Guadagnino.

Omar Apollo is a sad boy in Mexico City in the new video for “Te Maldigo.” On Thursday, the Mexican American heartthrob released the Luca Guadagnino-directed music video for the track, which translates to “I Curse You,” from the upcoming film, Queer.
The video captures Apollo singing the heartbreak track in a dimly lit bar, surrounded by folks performing interpretive dance to the lyrics. “I never heard an ‘I love you’/I always believed/That you would make me happy,” he sings in Spanish. “It can’t be/If you don’t love me.

Luca Guadagnino and Daniel Craig might have another novel adaptation in the works after collaborating together on “Queer.” But this rumored adaptation isn’t Burroughs; it’s actually a comic book.
According to a Deadline report, auteur Guadagnino and lead star Craig are in talks to bring DC Studios’ “Sgt. Rock” to the screen. Deadline noted that no deals have been confirmed between DC Studios, Craig, or Guadagnino. DC Studios did not respond to a request for comment.
The character of Sgt. Franklin John Rock, assumed to be played by Craig given the report, was created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert for the 1959 DC issue, “Our Army at War.” Like Craig’s “Queer” character, Rock is a WWII veteran. Rock landed his own comic book series, which ran from 1977 to 1988.
Variety cited that Justin Kuritzkes, who wrote “Challengers” and “Queer,” has a script for the DC feature.

Although A24‘s Queer marks Omar Apollo‘s acting debut, he’s used to performing for the camera.
At the movie’s Los Angeles premiere, the Grammy nominee explained how he approached his steamy scene with co-star Daniel Craig in the Luca Guadagnino-helmed adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ 1985 book.
“Well, I’ve shot music videos before for my music, so I just tried to emulate that feeling,” he told People.
Queer follows Lee (Craig) after fleeing from a drug bust in New Orleans to 1940s Mexico City, where he becomes infatuated with Allerton (Drew Starkey), a young discharged American Navy serviceman. The movie also stars Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, Henry Zaga, Drew Droege and Ariel Schulman.
Apollo’s brief appearance features very little dialogue, but includes a very revealing sex scene with Craig. The God Said No artist noted that the experience wasn’t as daunting as it sounds.

Daniel Craig had a very direct response to the discussions about his steamy sex scenes in his new movie Queer.
The 56-year-old James Bond alum shares the screen with the likes of Drew Starkey and Omar Apollo in the movie.
For the project, he filmed some raunchy content with both of the actors. Those scenes have sparked a conversation online.
He revealed what he thought about the topic while attending the movie’s premiere in Los Angeles on Wednesday night (November 13).

What does Daniel think? “It’s pretty prudish to me,” he told Variety.
Daniel also recently weighed in on straight actors playing gay characters in projects and what it was like to film and develop chemistry with Omar and Drew.
Meanwhile, another actor has teased one of the very erotic scenes from the movie.

Since the premiere of Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” at the Venice Film Festival in September, there has been an intense response from fans and media alike surrounding the revealing love scenes between star Daniel Craig and his on-screen paramour Drew Starkey.
When asked about the reactions to the on-screen sex at the Los Angeles premiere of “Queer” Wednesday night, Craig stated in a very matter-of-fact tone, “It’s pretty prudish to me.”
“Queer,” based on the 1985 novella by famed American beatnik William S. Burroughs, follows William Lee (Craig), a disillusioned American veteran who spends his days drinking and dopping in 1950s Mexico after fleeing a drug charge in his home country. His life suddenly finds purpose after meeting Eugene Allerton (Starkey), a younger American expat who shows Lee the flashes of love he’s desired for so long.

Omar Apollo is rolling through a lot of firsts in his life.
The singer, who rode the wave of a critically acclaimed debut album Ivory all the way to the Grammys with a best new artist nomination, offered an immediate yes when asked to make his acting debut in Luca Guadagnino’s Queer opposite Daniel Craig. The A24 film finds him playing a hustler who has a steamy one-night stand with Craig’s William Lee in Mexico City complete with a sex scene and full frontal nudity — more firsts for the 27-year-old Indiana native. His foray into Hollywood has since taken him to the Venice Film Festival and the recent Lacma Art + Film Gala, all new experiences for the rising star.

Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” stars Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey in a heartbreaking installment in the “Challengers” director’s filmography. With Oscar nomination talks happening for Craig and a career-making turn from Starkey, another star enters the frame, and in his acting debut: Omar Apollo.
The Grammy-nominated pop star appears briefly alongside Craig’s character, Lee, in one of the film’s buzziest scenes, showcasing the lengths Lee will go to for desire and Apollo in a role that’s hopefully not his last — and that portends bigger ones to come. In the scene, after exchanging longing looks, a drunken Lee picks up Apollo’s character at a bar and takes him back to a seedy love motel, where they have empty sex that leaves the alcoholic Lee once again bereft.
Though Apollo has taken some acting classes, he wasn’t really “putting energy towards it,” as he told IndieWire.

Luca Guadagnino’s new film “Queer” opens with a series of tableaux — little still-life images of glasses, trinkets and books. The objects are meant to evoke the lives of its two lead characters, gay men seeking refuge from their pasts and leaning into their desires in 1950s Mexico City. It’s an example, the film’s stars Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey say, of Guadagnino’s keen eye for how to evoke character through the material world. But it’s apparently even more than that too.
“The opening credits?” Craig asks, sitting next to his co-star in a New York photo studio. “Is the sperm still in there?”
“I think so,” Starkey says matter-of-factly.
We missed this visual, evidently. “See, that’s why you need to see the film again,” Craig remarks drolly. “I think there may have been a lot more at one point, but it’s still there.

Over the last decade, perhaps no filmmaker has expressed lust, longing, and simmering sensuality on the big screen with as much verve as Luca Guadagnino. From the May-December, sun-kissed romance of Call Me By Your Name, to the cannibals-on-the-lam love affair of Bones And All, to this year's intoxicating tennis-based ménage à trois Challengers, the Italian auteur has been bringing sexy back since long before it seemingly went away. And with his latest, William S. Burroughs adaptation Queer, the filmmaker — working from a script by his Challengers collaborator Justin Kuritzkes — looks to have done it again. The movie stars Daniel Craig as ageing, isolated American ex-pat William Lee, who finds himself seeking connection in Mexico City when he becomes infatuated with young buck Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey). Check out the swoon worthy first trailer below:

The first trailer for Luca Guadagnino’s forthcoming film Queer is a sensory overload of epic proportions. Daniel Craig leads the film, set for release Nov. 27, as William Lee. He brings to the screen a tangible sense of nervous curiosity as he circles Drew Starkey’s Eugene Allerton. “I want to talk to you,” he tells him, pausing before adding a caveat: “Without speaking.”
The trailer pays close attention to movement and touch. There are centipedes that crawl across the screen, accompanied by the subtle, chilling sound of one hundred legs moving.

The first trailer for Queer, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, has just dropped, unveiling a sensual and dreamlike adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ semi-autobiographical novel. Starring Daniel Craig and Outer Banks breakout Drew Starkey, the A24 film dives deep into an intense, surreal romance set against the backdrop of 1940s Mexico City.
Queer centers around William Lee (Craig), an isolated American expat drawn to Eugene Allerton (Starkey), a former Navy serviceman whose initial indifference only intensifies Lee’s obsession. The film, penned by Justin Kuritzkes, brings to life Burroughs’ enigmatic narrative, capturing the inner turmoil of Lee’s desires and vulnerabilities. Guadagnino describes the film as “a deeply personal movie about the inescapable quest for recognition in another’s gaze.”
Since its Venice Film Festival premiere, Queer has garnered praise for its audacious approach and Craig’s transformative performance. Variety critic Owen Glieberman highlighted Craig’s portrayal as “bold and trippy,...
