A decade ago, director David Bruckner made a valiant attempt to get a new Friday the 13th film into production… it just didn’t happen. Years later, he did manage to reboot the Hellraiser franchise, with his version of Hellraiser getting released through the Hulu streaming service back in October of 2022. Surprisingly, a year and a half has gone by since that release and we haven’t heard anything about the possibility of a follow-up – until now. During a chat with ComicBook.com, producer Keith Levine confirmed that they are having conversations about making a Hellraiser sequel.

Levine said, “We are trying to do a follow-up and there have been conversations. I can’t exactly say where we’re at in those conversations, but Bruckner is involved in those conversations and we spent a lot of time and energy, I think relaunching that world. A lot of brainpower going into crafting the Cenobite design,...

At the beginning of every filmmaking process, artists from across the industry will come up with an initial round of sketches, mockups, and designs for what every character in the film should look like. This is usually an explosion of creativity, one that can be difficult to fully rein in. There are so many incredibly talented artists with so many fun ideas to play with. However, in the end, everything gets whittled down and one design moves forward.

In the boundlessly creative genre that is horror, every character possesses its own charms that, ultimately, we wouldn't trade for anything. However, it's always fun to see just how many different versions exist of every on-screen horror villain. Alternate designs and pieces of rejected concept art have never been more accessible in the age of the internet, whether in an artist's virtual portfolio, the pages of fully published art books, or even test footage.

A few of last year’s most notable horror movies are still without physical media releases, and that’s because they ended up being streaming exclusives. That list includes Netflix’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Hulu’s Prey, along with Hulu and David Bruckner‘s Hellraiser.

We have no idea at this time whether or not Hellraiser will be released on DVD/Blu-ray here in the United States, but we’ve learned the film is hitting DVD over in the United Kingdom.

The UK DVD release of Hellraiser (2022) arrives on March 27, 2023. As always, you’ll be able to watch the disc here in the States but you’ll need a Region Free DVD player first.

Hellraiser (1987) casts a long shadow over the horror world. The original film, directed by Clive Barker, is a remarkably faithful adaptation of his own novella “The Hellbound Heart,” a twisted love story of forbidden passion and pain. The hotly anticipated reboot from director David Bruckner stars Jaime Clayton as the Priest and Odessa A’zion as new final girl, Riley. A recovering addict, Riley stumbles upon the Lament Configuration and finds herself dragged into the world of its painful magic.

Also drawn to the box is Roland Voight (Goran Visnjic), a wealthy entrepreneur obsessed with the power of the occult. On the surface, Bruckner’s new vision of the story bears only symbolic resemblance to Barker’s original novella The Hellbound Heart, but upon closer examination there are several thematic connections lurking just beneath the skin.

The film summons forth a new batch of Cenobites, led by Jamie Clayton’s Hell Priest. Bloody Disgusting spoke with the actors behind The Chatterer (Jason Liles), The Gasp (Selina Lo), and The Weeper (Yinka Olorunnife) about getting into character and how the makeup and prosthetics informed their performances.

The hierarchy and lore behind the new batch of Cenobites isn’t something explicitly discussed in Hellraiser but rather hinted at through the performances and interactions between them. The trio’s answers to our questions provided fascinating insight into their roles.

David Bruckner's new film "Hellraiser," a remake of Clive Barker's 1987 film, features a mysterious puzzle box at its center. When solved, the puzzle magically summons a cadre of unusual, monstrous being called Cenobites. The Cenobites are in a constant state of full-body mutilation, and have wires and pins lining their anatomy, carefully holding flaps of skin and muscle tissue aloft, assuring them the greatest possible pain. For the Cenobites, though, extreme pain is merely the height of sensory experience. In Barker's original, the pain was the extreme of sexuality. In Bruckner's film, the pain leads the Cenobites to a more spiritual, holy experience. In aching for outer reaches of physical experience, the Cenobites -- once human -- have transformed themselves. Their goal, now, is to convert other interested parties.

David Bruckner’s Hellraiser reboot is now streaming exclusively on Hulu, and today 20th Century Studios takes us behind the scenes for a look at the film’s brand new Hell Priest.

Titled “Becoming the Priest,” the short featurette video introduces Jamie Clayton as the new Hell Priest (aka Pinhead), showing off time lapse video footage of the incredible makeup.

“The makeup takes four hours to do, and about 45 minutes to an hour to remove,” Clayton explains. She describes the gruesome new look, “It’s so beautiful. Oh, it’s wild.”

In the decades since, multiple filmmakers have tried to deepen the mythology of the original story by giving us origin stories and alternate realities featuring the puzzle box and demonic entities. None of these films has managed to evoke the sinister feel of the first movie or capitalize on the story’s potential until now.

For several years, the Halloween and Hellraiser franchises were housed at the same studio. That’s no longer the case, so it’s a cool coincidence that we’re getting new additions to both of those franchises this October. A Hellraiser reboot is scheduled to arrive first, set to be released through the Hulu streaming service on October 7th. The new Halloween sequel, Halloween Ends, will follow a week later, reaching both theatres and the Peacock streaming service on October 14th. In anticipation of these release dates, USA Today has unveiled new images from each film: one giving another look at Pinhead, who is played by Jamie Clayton in the Hellraiser reboot, and the other offering a glimpse at the Michael Myers vs. Laurie Strode showdown we’ll be witnessing in Halloween Ends. Fans have been sharing their opinions on this take on the character… but what does the original Pinhead, Doug Bradley, think about Clayton stepping into the role that made him a genre icon? Our friends at Bloody Disgusting shared what Bradley had to say about the casting while he was making an appearance at the Silver Scream Con in Massachusetts:

It seemed like [a female Pinhead] was coming. It’s an interesting piece of casting. I don’t know Jamie. Of course, they’ve taken even a little bit of a wrinkle in that, because Jamie is transgender. I’m not familiar with her recent work, but there was a science fiction series on Netflix several years ago called Sense8, which I was quite a fan of.

Thirty-five years after Clive Barker's original horror classic "Hellraiser" crawled under the skin of unsuspecting audiences and refused to come back out, a newly reimagined nightmare is just about ready to be unleashed. Hulu's reimagining of Clive Barker's horrifying depiction of hell on earth, Hellraiser, will officially debut on the streamer on October 7 as part of the annual Huluween celebration of all things horror. Hulu has also released a brief teaser for the film, announcing the release date. The reboot is said to depict the iconic puzzle box falling into the hands of a young woman dealing with addiction, who will have to face off against the infamous cenobites. Sense8 actress Jamie Clayton is stepping in for Doug Bradley as Pinhead, the leader of the cenobites. Bradley portrayed Pinhead in a total of eight movies. Odessa A’zion, Adam Faison, Drew Starkey, Brandon Flynn, Aoife Hinds, Jason Liles, Yinka Olorunnife, Selina Lo, Zachary Hing, Kit Clarke, Goran Visnjic, and Hiam Abbass round out the rest of the cast.

Hulu has announced that its reimagining of the 1987 horror classic Hellraiser will debut exclusively on the streamer in the U.S., as part of its annual “Huluween” celebration of fright-filled content, on October 7.

The original film, which introduced horror fans to the iconic monster known as Pinhead, watches as a woman comes upon the newly resurrected, partially formed body of her brother-in-law. She then starts killing for him to revitalize his body, so that he can escape the demonic beings that have been pursuing him after he himself made his way out of their sadistic underworld. Clive Barker directed the pic from his own script, which was itself based on his 1986 novella The Hellbound Heart, with Clare Higgins, Ashley Laurence, Andrew Robinson, Sean Chapman, Robert Hines, Doug Bradley, Nicholas Vince, Simon Bamford, Grace Kirby and Oliver Smith starring.

Last week, The Ritual and The Night House director David Bruckner’s Hellraiser reboot earned its R rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. Now Hulu has released a short video that gives us our first (albeit somewhat obscured) look at Jamie Clayton (Sense8) as Pinhead and reveals that the new Hellraiser will be available to watch through the streaming service as of October 7th. Producer David S. Goyer came up with the story for the new film, and the screenplay was written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski (Super Dark Times). Based on Clive Barker’s novella The Hellbound Heart, the film has the following synopsis:

A young woman struggling with addiction comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites, a group of sadistic supernatural beings from another dimension.

The Hellraiser franchise returns to life with a brand new Hulu Original movie, and this morning we’ve learned that Hulu’s Hellraiser will debut on the service on October 7, 2022.

Hulu has been having a hell of a year on the horror front, kicking things off with Fresh and more recently reviving the Predator franchise with Prey. If the critically acclaimed latter film was any indication, Hulu is taking their horror franchise reboots very seriously, which bodes well for their new Hellraiser movie. We could be in store for a real treat with this one.
