Dylan O'Brien's breakout role was Stiles Stilinski in the MTV supernatural teen series Teen Wolf, but since the show's ending, he has established himself as a successful actor. He's had his own dystopian trilogy, The Maze Runner, starred in the two-time Oscar-nominated film Deepwater Horizon, and his latest roles have cemented him as a very successful star.
In 2024, O'Brien attempted a different role as he played a real person on Saturday Night. The film is based on the late-night live sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live, most specifically the show's premiere night in 1975, and O'Brien played Dan Aykroyd. Following the critical success of the film, Saturday Night is a new hit on Netflix, Tudum reports.

Saturday Night would make for a very solid double-bill with a Muppets movie. And not just because there are Muppets in it — well, primitive Muppets, at least, in the form of early Jim Henson creations King Ploobis and Vazh. Because much like one of Kermit and co’s capers, it’s all about putting on a show, and how much stress, anxiety and arm-flapping goes into playing music and lighting lights. At the centre of Jason Reitman’s movie, essentially playing the role of the frog, is the cardigan-wearing Lorne Michaels (Gabriel Labelle), young Canadian TV producer and wannabe revolutionary of the medium. He’s the sensible one. Around him swirls chaos, in many forms. There’s even an Animal stand-in, in the burly shape of John Belushi (Matt Wood), cocaine appreciator and walking tornado.

Iconic American comedy show Saturday Night Live turns 50 this year, kicking off the celebrations is a four part documentary.
It’s no exaggeration to say that Saturday Night Live is responsible for launching the careers of a huge amount of American comedy talent, from the early days with Gilda Radner, Chevy Chase, John Belushi, and Bill Murray, through eras with the much missed Phil Hartman, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Mike Myers, Molly Shannon, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig and many, many more.
This month sees the release of Saturday Night in the UK, following its release in the US last year. Live from New York, it’s criticisms of Saturday Night! By and large, reviews of Jason Reitman’s recounting of the final hour and a half before Saturday Night Live aired its first episode have been positive (our own Chris Bumbray gave it an 8/10). And while most of the original SNL cast members have been receptive of Saturday Night, one who was far from happy was Chevy Chase…which should really come as no surprise because he’s Chevy Chase (and you’re not).
As Jason Reitman recalled on SNL alumni Dana Carvey and David Spade’s Fly on the Wall podcast, Chevy Chase had some not-so-pleasant thoughts on the director’s latest movie. “So, Chevy comes in to watch the movie, and he is there with [wife] Jayni and they watch the film, and he’s in the group, and he comes up to me after and he pats me on the shoulder and goes,...

Saturday Night filmmaker Jason Reitman received quite a critical review for his film from one of the original SNL castmembers.
During a recent episode of the Fly on the Wall podcast, the director revealed Chevy Chase’s reaction to the movie, prefacing, “Chevy loves to say the thing you’re not supposed to say.” The film follows the chaotic 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of SNL in 1975.
“So, Chevy comes in to watch the movie, and he is there with [wife] Jayni and they watch the film, and he’s in the group, and he comes up to me after and he pats me on the shoulder and goes, ‘Well, you should be embarrassed,’” Reitman recalled to hosts David Spade and Dana Carvey.

Director Jason Reitman received a less than glowing review of “Saturday Night” from “SNL” legend Chevy Chase.
While speaking on the “Fly on the Wall” podcast, hosted by former “SNL” cast members David Spade and Dana Carvey, Reitman recalled Chase’s brash reaction to the film.

Spade said Chase’s reaction was “an exact Chevy thing” to say, adding that “you couldn’t even write [the moment] better.” Carvey speculated that Chase, in part, tried to embarrass Reitman because he “knows that’s funny, like that’s the roughest thing you could say to a director in the moment, or right up there.”

Controversial actor Chevy Chase was instrumental in creating Saturday Night Live as one of the original cast members of the legendary sketch comedy series. However, he does not seem to be thrilled with the feature film that was made about the show's very first episode coming together.
Saturday Night, directed by Jason Reitman, was released in theaters in September. Gotham actor Cory Michael Smith played the movie's version of Chase, and while the film didn't meet expectations at the box office, its reviewers were strong. Not everybody was a fan of the film, as it turns out, as one of the first people to give it a bad review was Chase himself. Per Deadline, Reitman was speaking with David Spade and Dana Carvey for the Fly on the Wall podcast when he shared Chase's reaction to Saturday Night.

2024 was a packed year for several actors working in Hollywood, whether they are continuously rising stars or already well-established names in the industry. The year had plenty of noteworthy character-driven dramas, animated features, chaotic comedies, and big-budget blockbusters to keep audiences entertained. More importantly, these actors proved their capability of playing two different types of characters.
For example, multiple actors from the enthralling and visually stunning Dune: Part Two, like Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Austin Butler, also appeared in acclaimed and award-worthy dramas in the same year. They are just a few of many actors who stole the show in 2024 with their commanding screen presence and shockingly good versatility. From newcomers like Cailee Spaeny to big-name stars like Chris Hemsworth, 2024 was a spectacular year for these particular performers.

It’s just a coincidence that Laraine Newman is calling for this interview on Oct. 11, 49 years to the day since she was part of the group of comedians known as the Not Ready for Prime Time Players that starred on the first episode of Saturday Night Live. “I didn’t realize this was the date until I saw it on the internet,” she says. In Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night,” we meet the original Not Ready for Prime Time Players mere minutes before they revolutionize comedy — and television itself — with their live, late-night NBC variety show dreamed up by an inscrutable Canadian named Lorne Michaels. Buzzing with nervous energy, the film tick-tocks through the chaotic final 90 minutes before the first episode of “Saturday Night Live” (which at that point didn’t have the “Live” in its title) hits the air on October 11, 1975.

If you’re interested in American comedy, you must have heard of SNL at some point in your life. Launched in 1975, this NBC sketch comedy show became a cultural touchstone, crafted by baby boomers and adored by Gen X and millennials throughout their formative years. Now, five decades after its inception, people understand its influence on the American comedy. While the SNL sketches impacted other forms of comedy like movies and sitcoms for decades, it is now borrowing its style of humor from other formats to satisfy another generation of viewers. Be that as it may, it is fascinating to learn about its foundation through Jason Reitman’s exhilarating “Saturday Night” (2024). While calling it a formative moment in American comedy will be reductive considering the history of this form, it is certainly a milestone that shaped generations of comedic minds to come. 2024 has been a year packed with great cinema from all different genres. Some of the years biggest hits have also been the most financially successful, like Dune: Part Two, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Deadpool & Wolverine. However, unfortunately, many other great films have fallen by the popularity wayside.
Every year brings a number of films that dont live up to financial or critical expectations, but there are also a lot of films that simply dont spark huge love from audiences. These films are absolutely not failures; they are completely underrated and deserve a second look.

Original Saturday Night Live star Laraine Newman has addressed the accuracy of Saturday Night, contrasting the movie to the sketch comedy's real launch. Directed by Jason Reitman, the biographical film dramatizes the day leading up to the premiere of NBC's famous sketch comedy series. The cast of Saturday Night portray a variety of actors who were the first to star in the series, including Newman, who is played by Emily Fairn. The movie has been praised for its balance of drama and comedy, alongside its success as a nostalgic playback of when the series first began.

Longtime friends and collaborators, Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, reunite once more in this new biopic, charting the explosive birth of the iconic Saturday Night Live comedy program on the US TV network NBC.
Set in the frantic 90 minutes before the show’s inaugural episode aired, Saturday Night expertly captures the unpredictable, high-stakes nature of live television, weaving in biting humour, personal conflicts, and the birth of a cultural phenomenon.
Reitman and Kenan’s script balances tension and comedy, paying homage to the anarchic energy of SNL’s origins while offering insight into the fragile egos, narcotic excesses and volatile personalities that shaped its creation.
The film opens on October 11, 1975, with a visibly stressed Lorne Michaels, portrayed with nuance and gravitas by The Fabelmans star Gabriel Labelle, entering NBC’s 30 Rockefeller Plaza in preparation for the first show. Outside he is greeted by a stressed out NBC page (Stanger Things...

Jack Gleeson appeared on Game of Thrones for four seasons as boy king Joffrey Baratheon, a character so vile and loathsome that fans universally cheered when he was poisoned to death at his own wedding. Gleeson became famous off the back of that role, but being best known as a preening, sadistic jackass probably isn't the kind of famous most of us would like, which might be part of the reason Gleeson laid low for a while after he exited the series. We can only imagine the kinds of asshole roles he was being offered.
Now that Game of Thrones has been over for years, Gleeson is getting back into the acting game, which is good news for us because he's a talented guy. In Saturday Night, J.K. Simmons plays Milton Berle, a real-life TV personality who is unabashedly arrogant; the real Berle was actually banned from Saturday Night Live. The recent comedy Saturday Night tells the story of the chaotic first episode of SNL. Starting from 90 minutes before the show to the opening sketch, the movie depicts the show's original cast and its creator, Lorne Michaels. Saturday Night's cast is full of familiar faces portraying even more familiar faces, who offer additional lore connected to SNL.
Milton Berle was an actor and comedian known as "Mr. Television." Berle's career spanned his entire life, from performing on stage as a child to hosting the variety show, Texaco Star Theater. Berle was considered the very first television star, which is what earned him his nickname. He was one of the first celebrities to become a household name because of TV, giving him a massive reputation.

Editors Nathan Orloff and Shane Reed were given a new kind of experimental freedom on “Saturday Night,” Jason Reitman’s behind-the-scenes re-enactment of how NBC’s revolutionary late-night sketch comedy show made its live debut on October 11, 1975.
By following anxious producer Lorne Michaels (Gabriel Labelle) as he guides his cast and crew through rehearsals, the editing duo (who previously cut Reitman’s “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire”) essentially make audiences into a fly on the wall during the make or break 90-minute lead up to showtime. Making it all the more interesting, of course, is that the soon-to-be-legendary, “Not Ready for Prime Time Players,” consists of Dan Aykroyd (Dylan O’Brien), John Belushi (Matt Wood), Chevy Chase (Cory Michael Smith), Jane Curtin (Kim Matula), Garrett Morris (Lamorne Morris), Laraine Newman (Emily Fairn), and Gilda Radner (Ella Hunt).
“It was really about the availability of bandwidth,” Reed told IndieWire. “Nathan was on set and I was cutting from L.

Original Saturday Night Live cast member Dan Aykroyd is praising Jason Reitmans latest film Saturday Night, which chronicles the very first episode of the series that debuted Oct. 11, 1975. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the Ghostbusters actor posted his remarks on the movie on his X account.
Cracking a Head to applaud Jason Reitman's triumphant SNL film. Wow! What a propulsive, engaging, funny, beautifully cast and acted, suspenseful, adventurous, music-filled ride. A perfect window into the creative process at its highest level. Pretty accurate too. I was there that night and got to relive it wonderfully again. Congratulations Gil, Jason and Blumie. Don't miss it whether you know the show or not. It is a stand-alone masterpiece and surefire candidate for Best Picture, Aykroyd posted, referring to the films co-writers, Reitman and Gil Kenan and producer Jason Blumenfeld.

Cory Michael Smith had some big shoes to fill with his latest role.
The Saturday Night actor recently opened up about the “terror” of mastering his portrayal of Chevy Chase and his “very compulsive” process to prepare for the film, which premiered Friday on the 49th anniversary of Saturday Night Live‘s debut.

It was no small feat to get “Saturday Night Live” off the ground at NBC, and as a result, the cast of “Saturday Night” is pretty huge. In many cases, the actors also look eerily similar to the people they’re playing.
Hitting theaters everywhere on Oct. 11 after a limited theatrical release in New York and Los Angeles, Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night” tells the story of the 90 minutes right before the first-ever episode of “SNL.” It’s chaotic and at the time, even Lorne Michaels couldn’t explain what the show was going to be.
Below, you’ll find the cast of “Saturday Night” alongside what their real-life counterparts looked like back then.

Lorne Michaels is the creator and, to this day, producer of “Saturday Night Live.” He’s played in “Saturday Night” by Gabriel Labelle, who had his breakout role in Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans.

Jason Reitman's superb "Saturday Night" features 80 speaking parts, along with dozens of background actors, and a camera that effortlessly weaves through a busy set while capturing the disorderly and anarchic production of the first episode of "Saturday Night Live." That required a lot of meticulous planning, especially when there are long single-take shots that move seamlessly throughout a set that has no edge of frame, which means that everything on that set was designed as if all of it could be seen on camera in any given moment. But even with such careful organization needed to realize this hilarious, frenzied chronicle of showbiz history, Reitman still had moments of last minute inspiration, and one of them resulted in a key scene that serves as a significant moment of realization for showrunner Lorne Michaels (played by "The Fablemans" star Gabriel Labelle).

In 2008, director Jason Reitman lived his “SNL” dream.
He was fresh off the success of “Juno,” which earned Reitman a Best Director Oscar nomination and the film a Best Picture nomination. His agent reached out to Lorne Michaels and relayed Reitman’s wish — to do a guest writing stint on “Saturday Night Live.” And, incredibly, it happened.
“It was like getting to suit up for the Los Angeles Lakers for one night,” Reitman told TheWrap. He and “SNL” writer Simon Rich stayed up until four in the morning on a Tuesday night working on ideas. On Wednesday, they took their three sketch ideas to the table read. “And then later that afternoon I got to be there for the moment when they come out of Lorne’s office and pinned a piece of paper to the wall,” Reitman said. That’s when he found out that one of his sketches...

Comedy fans love to complain about the current quality of Saturday Night Live, but Laraine Newman believes two of her former castmates would be fans. “Well, I think they’d be amazed,” she told People. “It’s hard to know whether they would have been excited about the evolution of comedy tone, but I think they would be. Both Gilda and John had a very progressive perspective on the world, as well as comedy.”
While much about the show has changed over the past 50 years, the way SNL is assembled from Monday to Saturday night has remained remarkably consistent. “In format, that hasn’t changed,” Newman explained. “The behind-the-scenes function of pitching to the host, assigning sketches, writing all night and preparing for the live show — that’s all the same.”

Saturday Night Live has long been known for its stars’ impressions of everyone from current politicians like Kamala Harris to historical figures like Vincent Price. Saturday Night, the movie set in the moments before its series premiere, isn’t aiming for verisimilitude on that level: the actors might be playing real-life people, but they’re also creating characters. The object isn’t an SNL, or even MADtv-level impersonation, and the performances shouldn’t really be judged on that basis.

“Saturday Night Live’s” 50th season got off to a good start this past weekend.
Though Jean Smart (“Hacks”) and Jelly Roll were the host and musical guest, respectively, the real stars of “SNL” Episode #1865 were the new character assignments ahead of the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
Former “SNL” cast member (1986-1993) Dana Carvey is our absent-minded (and just generally absent) outgoing commander-in-chief Joe Biden, Maya Rudolph is of course back as Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, Andy Samberg returned to Studio 8H as her husband — the second gentleman who could become the first gentleman come January — Doug Emhoff, standup comedian Jim Gaffigan as her running mate Tim Walz, Bowen Yang as the Republican VP candidate Jd Vance, and of course James Austin Johnson as former president Donald Trump.
The September 28 season premiere landed 5.3 million viewers, the most for a season premiere episode since 2020, when Chris Rock opened the season as host.

Columbia Pictures’ Saturday Night from Jason Reitman debuted at $265k, a great $53k per theater that’s the second-best limited opening of the year, and the best since June when Kinds Of Kindness also opened in 5 theaters (to a $75k PTA). It’s been a long a slightly dower wait for something to pop.
Saturday Night made $108K on Friday, $88K on Saturday and a projected $69K on Sunday in LA and New York. Expands Oct. 4 before opening wide on Oct 11 and looks well set up for a nice theatrical run with strong reviews and word of mouth since premiering at Telluride and Toronto.

Hannah Einbinder made a surprise cameo in Saturday Night Live’s landmark 50th season premiere on Saturday, September 28, joining host Jean Smart in introducing musical guest Jelly Roll’s performance of the song “Liar.” Einbinder’s appearance shouldn’t be that much of a surprise: She and Smart are the lead stars of the Max comedy Hacks, but Einbinder is also part of the SNL family as the daughter of original cast member Laraine Newman. Newman joined Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, George Coe, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Michael O’Donoghue, and Gilda Radner in the SNL Season 1 cast in 1975 and stayed on the NBC sketch-comedy show for five years. She married voice actor Chad Einbinder in 1991, and the couple welcomed Einbinder in 1995. Newman will be played by Emily Fairn in the upcoming movie about SNL‘s very first episode, Saturday Night, coming to theaters on October 11. Hannah Einbinder is here!

Hannah Einbinder was in Studio 8H after all.
Einbinder made a cameo on Saturday Night Live alongside her Hacks co-star Jean Smart to introduce Jelly Roll.
But while she works alongside Smart on the Max comedy series, Einbinder has enough of her own history with the long-running NBC series – she is the daughter of Laraine Newman, who starred in SNL from the very beginning.
Newman was one of the Og stars from Season 1 (she’s played by Emily Fairn in Jason Reitman’s movie Saturday Night) until she left in 1980.
Newman was in the news earlier this month after she was tweeting up a storm around the Emmys, when she slammed The Bear being in the comedy category.
Smart, meanwhile, was wearing a Jelly Roll T-shirt as the pair were introducing the musician.

Dylan O’Brien is keeping a pretty cool head after undertaking his latest role.
The Saturday Night actor said he “can’t wait” to meet Dan Aykroyd following his portrayal of the Saturday Night Live alum in the upcoming Jason Reitman-helmed film, which premieres nationwide on Oct. 11, the 49th anniversary of the NBC sketch comedy show’s first episode.
“I’m okay if my guy hates it. It’s acceptance. That was my method,” he joked to People about Aykroyd’s potential reaction to his performance.
“I hear we’re very similar, in a way that I never knew,” added O’Brien. “I feel like we’re going to get along.”
Saturday Night takes place on October 11, 1975, as a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers change television forever. Formerly titled SNL 1975, the film tells the true story of what happened behind the scenes that night in the 90 minutes...
