MTV Documentary Films has picked up world rights to David Osit’s Sundance doc Predators.
The film digs into Dateline’s popular and controversial series To Catch a Predator. MTV will release the film theatrically this fall and intends to campaign for awards before launching on Paramount+ with Showtime.
To Catch a Predator was a popular television show designed to hunt down child predators and lure them to a film set, where they would be interviewed and eventually arrested.
Predators had its world premiere in the U.S. Documentary Competition at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. It will debut internationally at Cph: Dox in Copenhagen before heading on the festival circuit.
“I’m thrilled to work with MTV Documentary Films and am humbled to have Predators included in their excellent slate of award-winning, incisive, and thoughtful nonfiction programming,” Osit said in a statement. “I’m so glad that MTV Documentary Films...

The serial killer train is moving full steam ahead for another edition of Nightmare on Film Street! Join your horror hosts Kimmi & Jon for a blast from the past, and a late 90s lesson in MomCore Gore with The Bone Collector (1999). As gnarly as Se7en, and as stacked a cast as…uh- Se7en, The Bone Collector is rarely talked about these days when ranking serial killer thrillers, and that’s a damn shame.
The Bone Collector stars a paraplegic Denzel Washington whose acting circles around his co-stars with just his face and 1 working finger! And despite being targeted by Dateline obsessed Moms (mostly thanks to a young Angelina Jolie) this dang movie also has: melted faces, people eaten by rats, creepy severed fingers, and a death cab for cuties on a one-way ride to a shallow grave. NBC’s Dateline correspondents Keith Morrison, Andrea Canning and Josh Mankiewicz are staring at me via Zoom for a rare joint interview, and the effect is initially unnerving. It turns out, this kind of reaction isn’t unusual. Canning recalls visiting the Today show with Morrison where they bumped into The Hangover actor Ed Helms. “You people scare me,” Helms blurted.
Yet when the correspondents turn their attention to the victims and suspects of sensational crimes on Friday nights, they become downright soothing — law-and-order comfort food for true crime fans and couples without end-of-week plans. For three decades, NBC’s longest-running primetime series has been a compelling and smartly produced always-there mainstay. It’s not what the critics call “appointment TV,” but it’s exceedingly reliable. Dateline knows how to tell a compelling story, complete with misdirects, twists and grabby narration.

Dateline NBC’s gripping episode, “The Secret in Black Rock Canyon,” airing on February 18, 2024, delves into the harrowing murder of Cassie Jo Stoddart, a 16-year-old high school student from Pocatello, Idaho. You may have met Pam Hupp before, on Dateline NBC, where she has been featured several times, including on a related podcast. Because we obviously can’t get enough of notorious women gone wrong. NBC’s limited-series docudrama The Thing About Pam might test one’s tolerance for such subjects as it wallows in the lurid, adopting Dateline’s cheesy approach of milking melodrama from tragedy, down to using frontman Keith Morrison as narrator. He drips buckets of smarm with every leering observation. (Credit: Frank Ockenfels 3/NBC) Two-time Oscar winner Renée Zellweger gets in the spirit by making Pam a figure of deadly high camp, slurping giant sodas and spooking barking dogs with a glare of her squinty eyes, swaddled in so many prosthetics she might as well be Mummy Dearest. ...

TV creators are constantly searching for inspiration for their next projects, and in the past, books, comics and movies provided the source material for many series. In the past few years, podcasts have become a fertile source of ideas for documentary series and dramatic shows as well as comedies and talkshows. The episodic nature of podcasts lends itself perfectly to TV, where six to 10 episodes lets the viewer really dive into complicated stories like “Dirty John” or “The Shrink Next Door.”

It’s that time of year again. While some directors annually share their favorite films of the year, Steven Soderbergh lists everything he consumed, media-wise. For 2021––another year in which he not only released a new film, but shot another (and produced the Oscars)––he still got plenty of watching in.
Along with catching up on 2021’s new releases, he took in plenty of classics, including Jaws, Citizen Kane, Metropolis, The French Connection, and Lubitsch’s Ninotchka and Design For Living. Early last year, he also saw a cut of Channing Tatum’s Dog, which doesn’t arrive until next month. Just two days away from its annual PPV Royal Rumble, Fox’s WWE Friday Night SmackDown teased that event with some special features, highlighted by a 10-man tag team event.
That and the return of Braun Strowman and the ongoing war of words between Roman Reigns and Kevin Owens led to an 0.6 for the two-hour show, which topped the night’s demo wars.
Close behind was a repeat of ABC’s Shark Tank, which has been the field leader for several weeks, and a new episode of NBC’s The Blacklist. The latter was just renewed for a ninth season.
CBS had a night of reruns on its crime drama lineup, but Blue Bloods managed the night’s largest total audience with 4.32 million viewers.
In the Friday newsmag faceoffs, NBC’s Dateline and ABC’s 20/20 both had an 0.4, with Dateline’s “killer grandma” feature boasting the larger audience of the two.

Oregon’s upset of favored USC was the Friday night individual show ratings demo king, clocking in at an 0.7 for the Fox Sports broadcast. The Pac-12 championship saw Oregon win 31-24, likely claiming a Fiesta Bowl berth.
Oregon (4-2) advanced to the championship game despite not winning its own division. The Ducks were substituted for first-place Washington because of a Covid-19 outbreak, but made the most of the opportunity. It was a bizarre ending to a bizarre six-game season.
ABC had holiday specials on tap, starting with Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, which grabbed an 0.5. Follow-up Shrek the Halls had an 0.5 as well, with the night capped by 20/20’s 0.4 performance.
The CBS crime drama lineup saw MacGyver lead off with an 0.4, and it snowballed from there, as Magnum P.I. came in at 0.5, capped by Blue Bloods at 0.6 and the night’s largest P2+ audience at 6.26 million.

ABC’s Shark Tank again was the Friday night overall winner among shows, scoring an 0.6 and the biggest total P2+ audience at 4218. But it wasn’t enough to top the network averages, where Fox claimed the crown.
Baseball has long been considered the national pastime. But if we were to judge that status solely by television ratings, wrestling would have a strong argument. Recovering from a World Series that brought record lows to the table, Fox saw a strong showing by perennial kings WWE wrestling. The WWE Friday Night SmackDown scored an 0.6, the same score as the network for its two-hour slot.
ABC’s Shark Tank was followed by 20/20 pulling an 0.5 for its examination of the hunt for the Golden State Killer.
At NBC, a repeat of American Ninja Warrior came in at an 0.3, with Dateline’s segment on a woman’s search for her mother rising to an 0.4.

Two films released, another film shot, and Steven Soderbergh managed to still watch and read a decent amount in 2019. (Note to self: barely using his Twitter account probably helps.) So a favorite tradition continues with today’s release of his annual viewing and reading log on Extension 765, which has a surprise, oddity, or some-such at nearly every turn.
Favorites include: making it through all 181 hours of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Too Old to Die Young in seven days but taking nearly four months to finish Sergei Bondarchuk’s War and Peace; Chinatown and Richard Lester movies appearing on yet another list; he, too, watching Fleabag; seeing a version of his next movie, Let Them All Talk, just under a month after principal photography commenced. And so on and so forth.
