Emma Stone’s 2010 Movie on Prime Video Secretly Honors This Succession Star’s Forgotten Role
Image
Emma Stone or Emily Jean Stone’s Easy A isn’t just a chick-flick with a witty script and a stellar lead star- it’s also quite the love letter to classic teen cinema. And there’s one particular scene that makes this film truly special: a throwaway line that’s a subtle nod to Succession star Alan Ruck’s forgotten film, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

Stone’s movie doesn’t directly name Ruck or his character, but she does deliver a line that felt a lot like a clever homage to the 1986 teen movie. Now on Prime Video, Easy A has found new life with a new generation of audiences. And, while Ruck might have moved on from his role as Cameron Frye, honors like these, his role in the HBO series Succession, and news headlines are still keeping him relevant.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off Stars Reunite 39 Years Later for New Comedy
Image
Ferris Bueller's Day Offstars Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck are reuniting for a new road trip comedy.

Per Deadline, Broderick and Ruck have signed on for the leading roles in director Allan Loeb's upcoming feature film, The Best Is Yet to Come. Written by Jon Turtletaub, The Best Is Yet To Come will mark the first time that Broderick and Ruck have reunited on the silver screen since the release of Ferris Bueller's Day Off all the way back in 1986.

The Best Is Yet To Come will star Broderick and Ruck as two best friends who end up in a race against time after a misunderstanding spirals out of control. The film is based on the 2019 French film of the same name (Le meilleur reste à venir) from the co-writers/directors Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patellière. Matthew Broderick at an event for Wonderful World (2009)
Bueller? Bueller? Ferris Bueller’s Day Off stars Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck are in talks to reunite for The Best Is Yet To Come, an upcoming comedy from screenwriter Allan Loeb with Jon Turteltaub in the director’s chair. The project is based on the French film of the same name, with Amy Baer producing via Gidden Media and executive producer Dimitri Rassam, who made the 2019 original. In addition to penning the script, Loeb will also executive produce.

If they sign on the dotted line, Broderick and Ruck will play best friends who, through a colossal misunderstanding that creates a ticking clock, hop in a car to find the estranged son of one of them and also try to do all the things that life has prevented them from doing.

Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck played Ferris Beuller and Cameron Frye in the 1986 John Hughes classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

'Ferris Bueller' Stars Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck Finally Reunite for New Comedy
Image
Ferris Bueller and Cameron Frye are about to have another day off. Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck, on-screen high-school best pals in the classic teen comedy Ferris Bueller's Day Off, are set to reunite on the big screen. The duo are in talks to star in The Best Is Yet to Come, a new comedy from Lionsgate. Deadline reports that the film is a remake of a French comedy of the same name.

Broderick and Ruck will star as a pair of lifelong best friends; after a tragicomic misunderstanding, one of them comes to believe that the other only has months to live. The two embark on a road trip (hopefully not in a borrowed 1961 Ferrari Gt) to find the "dying" man's long-estranged son, and to rediscover life along the way. The movie will be directed by Jon Turteltaub, from a script by Allan Loeb. Deals with the two stars are currently being finalized,...

What Happened to Anthony Michael Hall?
Image
It’s 1985, and a lanky 17-year-old is nervously pacing backstage at NBC’s Studio 8H in New York City. In just a few minutes, he’ll make history as the youngest cast member ever to grace the stage of Saturday Night Live. This isn’t just any teenager – it’s Anthony Michael Hall, already a bonafide movie star thanks to his work with writer and director John Hughes, about to take on one of the most prestigious (and pressure-filled) gigs in comedy. As the familiar strains of the SNL theme song begin to play, Hall takes a deep breath, knowing that his life is about to change yet again. But did it change for the better? Did this skinny, awkward dork continue to bless us for decades with great cinema and comedy? Or did he take a darker, more difficult path of self-destruction and/or self-discovery? Did he spend the...

The Title Of Beverly Hills Cop Has Been A Total Lie For 40 Years Now
Image
Eddie Murphy's Axel Foley, the main character of the "Beverly Hills Cop" film franchise, might be one of the most endearing movie characters of the 1980s. Axel is witty, charming, loyal, fun-loving, fantastic at his job, willing to buck the system when necessary, he trusts his gut, and he's overall great company. He's the type of guy everyone who watches these films would want to go on adventure with.

Martin Brest's original 1987 movie follows a Detroit police officer as he travels from Michigan to Beverly Hills to get justice for his murdered childhood friend. Murphy absolutely dominates the film with his perfect blend of comedic timing, dramatic chops, and physicality. Axel's superpower is being able to read people and situations at a glance, and instantly improvising his way through those situations to get what he needs, often in highly entertaining fashion. His demeanor and joie de vivre gives the movie a buoyancy,...

‘Succession’ Star Alan Ruck Doesn’t Recall Reprising His Iconic ‘Ferris Bueller’ Role After 34 Years, Says “Maybe somebody owes me some money”
Image
Alan Ruck has been playing the role of Connor Roy in HBO’s “Succession” and getting his due credit. However, it all began for him with 1986’s all-time classic “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”. He played the nervous, fast-talking Cameron Frye in John Hughes’ classic. He reluctantly got dragged along on Ferris’ epic adventure, stealing his dad’s Ferrari and causing delightful mayhem throughout Chicago.

A still from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Many years later, Alan Ruck might have a bone to pick with someone. Despite recently bringing the character back to life, it seems like Ruck does not recall doing any such incident. The reason why he has seemingly forgotten reprising his character is definitely worth knowing!

Alan Ruck Played the Same Character Nearly 30 Years Apart (Sort Of)
Image
Still standing as a modern classic 37 years since its release, Ferris Bueller's Day Off depicted a glossy lifestyle for the ideal carefree high schooler. The titular character magnetically performed by Matthew Broderick had an equally compelling foil in his good friend, Cameron Frye, played by Alan Ruck. Ferris was cool and suave. Cameron was uptight and awkward. Ferris stopped and sniffed the roses. Cameron would rather let the roses die of dehydration. Audiences were designed to detest Cameron, but as time passed, and as the prime viewers of John Hughes' film aged considerably, Cameron became far more sympathetic, raising doubt about whether Ferris Bueller was the main character after all.

Matthew Broderick knows Ferris Bueller is his legacy
Image
Bueller? Bueller? To many, Matthew Broderick will always be Ferris Bueller, the king of skipping school, dodging pesky principals and parade serenades. Broderick is well aware of this, fessing up that character will be his legacy.

Speaking with The Guardian, Matthew Broderick admitted he will forever be tied to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, saying, “What’s my legacy? Well, I’m Ferris Bueller, I suppose. I have to accept it. And I like it. I’ve made my peace with it.” Broderick almost seems a bit reluctant to latch onto the reputation of Ferris Bueller, although that might be because the movie is almost 40 years old and was part of the early stage of his career, adding, “I’m not ready for people to start discussing my legacy…And I have this Pollyanna streak that keeps me going. I always like to think there’s something coming that’s better.

Was ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ Based on a True Story?
Image
A day away from school that includes lunch at a five-star restaurant, a Chicago Cubs game, a trip to the top of the John Hancock building, and a tour of the Chicago Museum of Modern Art made up the terrific 1986 summer film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. John Hughes directed the movie, which is one of many adored teen coming-of-age tales set in his beloved hometown. Many of us can identify with going to some lengths to avoid school, but few can match the exploits of the suave and charismatic Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick), his uptight, hypochondriac friend Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck), and his doting girlfriend Sloane Peterson (Mia Sara). Together these three (and Cameron's father's precious 1961 "choice" cherry red Ferrari 259 Gt) made principal Ed Rooney's (Jeffrey Jones) life a living hell, and left him traumatized and stranded in the middle of a suburban Chicago neighborhood. So if we've all skipped school,...

Succession star Alan Ruck reveals in an exclusive with uInterview his thoughts on the show’s finale.

While he did enjoy acting on the show he noted that, “[creator] Jesse [Armstrong]’s right to end it now. I think we’ll go out on a real high. I think it’s the best season we’ve done, really, and then we’ve done some pretty good stuff, you know. But I think it’s our best season. I think he’s smart to end it now, we’ll go out on a high note. I’ll miss everybody but that’s how it goes.”

Alan Ruck: Cameron From Ferris Bueller's Day Off Deserved Better in Life and the Film
Image
Many of us know Alan Ruck from the hit movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off, where he played Cameron Frye, the best friend of Ferris (Matthew Broderick) and Sloane Peterson (Mia Sarah). Others know Ruck from the series Succession. In addition, Ruck has starred in over 100 films and television shows.

Having been born in Cleveland, Ohio, Ruck dreamed of getting out of there and describes his school years as miserable, especially the teenage ones. He came from a low-income family and did not have many friends. While every teenager was throwing parties and having a great time with their peers, Ruck was not. He was not athletic and had a lot of issues with focusing and doing well in school. This story is very similar for many children and adults reminiscing on their high school years. Of course, not everyone wanted that kind of attention, but Ruck wished to find some...

Alan Ruck credits Ferris Bueller himself, Matthew Broderick, for his success
Image
Bueller…Bueller…oh, and Cameron, too! Ferris Bueller’s Day Off stars Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck recently sat down for a one-on-one conversation to discuss a variety of topics, most importantly John Hughes’ 1986 comedy. But its status as a teen movie classic may not have happened without the pair’s work in the theater.

After some banter about plague masks, Ruck told Broderick, “I’m not blowing smoke up your ass, but I owe you a lot,” causing confusion. Clarifying, Ruck said, “If there was no Matthew Broderick, there probably wouldn’t have been a Biloxi Blues, and that was a major springboard for me,” referring to the stage production of Neil Simon’s play, which Broderick would later star in the movie adaptation of. “If it wasn’t for Biloxi Blues, Ferris Bueller wouldn’t have happened for me. I’ve told you this before, but I think...

Critics’ Conversation: ‘Succession’ Sets Up Its Endgame, Hilarity and Darkness Intact
Image
Daniel Fienberg: It’s hard to believe we’re only a couple of months away from HBO’s Succession being done forever. After a run of 10 episodes set to conclude on May 28 — conveniently on the eve of the TV calendar’s Emmy deadline — the story of the Roys and their family-splintering quest for dynastic supremacy will exist only in memories, a full year of awards campaigning and what I can only assume will be decades of passive-aggressive debate between Jeremy Strong and Brian Cox on the merits of Method acting.

Critics have been sent the season’s first four episodes, but woe betide anybody who spoils much of anything about this run of backstabbing adventures in the realm of excess.

So what can we discuss about the start of the new Succession season? It begins with a birthday party, one that has almost nothing in common with the bash...

1 Ferris Bueller Detail Makes Cameron's Backstory Even More Tragic
Image
Cameron is one of the funniest characters in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, but a detail that wasn't revealed until years later makes the character's backstory so much more tragic. John Hughes' 1986 teen comedy is a classic, with the film being remembered for its unique style, quotable lines, and hilarious jokes. Although the film presents Cameron as a loser, one Ferris Bueller's Day Off detail hints that Cameron's story is so much sadder than the movie lets on.

Donning his red hockey jersey and khaki shorts, Cameron Frye is a member of Ferris Bueller's Day Off's main trio of characters who decide to skip school for a day. In the film, Cameron is shown to be the anxious and awkward counterpart of the fearless and fun-loving Ferris Bueller, with the dynamic between the two characters being one of the film's most memorable aspects. The Ferrari, which is the subject...

10 Most Lovable Losers In John Hughes' Movies
Image
As the holiday season commences, the works of John Hughes are bound to experience a resurgence in popularity. After all, he directed Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, one of the few Thanksgiving movies, and he was also a producer on Home Alone, another staple of the holidays.

Though he was known for many things, Hughes was particularly remarkable for the skill with which he created the figure of the lovable loser. These men (and women) were people who exist on the margins of their respective societies but who, nevertheless, manage to be warm and charming, ultimately worming their way into the viewer’s heart.

Cameron Frye (Ferris Bueller's Day Off)

Ferris Bueller's Day Off is one of the most beloved movies of the 1980s. It has everything one could want from a John Hughes movie, including a lovable loser in the form of Cameron Frye. Cameron has long had to labor in the shadow of Ferris,...

Movie Poster of the Week: “The Act of Coming Out” and the Art of Caspar Newbolt
Image
It’s about time I wrote about Caspar Newbolt, a designer who for the past ten years has been stealthily creating some of the most adventurous, expressive, and unusual film posters out there. I first came across Newbolt’s work when his poster for Tim Sutton’s Memphis was one of my favorite posters of 2014. Sutton has been one of Newbolt’s most consistent clients in the eight years since then (his poster for Sutton’s The Last Son was also one of my runners-up of 2021). Newbolt tends to work in the indie sphere (in both film and music) and has made many posters for short films as well as theatrically released features. He has also recently worked with designer Charlotte Gosch on a redesign of Filmmaker Magazine. Newbolt’s brand new poster for The Act of Coming Out—a beautiful, heartbreaking eleven-minute hybrid documentary directed by Alexandra Stergiou and...

He joins an ensemble that also includes Jamie Foxx, Tommy Lee Jones, Jurnee Smollett, Mamoudou Athie, Bill Camp, Dorian Missick, Pamela Reed, Amanda Warren and Jim Klock.

The film from director Maggie Betts is based on the New Yorker article by Jonathan Harr. It follows a charismatic personal injury lawyer famous for his impressive track record and loudly unconventional approach who decides to help a funeral home owner save his family business from a predatory corporate behemoth. Alan Ruck is talking to me by video about the present, but he appears to be sitting in the past. The present we are discussing is the forthcoming third season of Succession, the wildly adored HBO series about plutocracies and dysfunctional families, created by Jesse Armstrong, a co-creator of Peep Show. Ruck plays Connor, the neglected eldest son of a media magnate, Logan Roy (Brian Cox). Like all the actors on the show – as the Guardian’s unofficial Succession correspondent, I have interviewed Cox and Jeremy Strong – Ruck has thought deeply about his character and is very eloquent on the subject. Inspired by the Movies – how to spruce up you, and your home
Have you ever come home from the movies inspired to spruce up your surroundings? Cinema is often seen as a reflection of the world we live in, but it can often lead us to new places, giving us a vision of the future.

The sight of Tom Cruise sporting a pair of Ray bans in 1983’s Risky Business gave a huge boost to the company. Though Cameron Frye’s house from Ferris Bueller took five years to sell, it remains an iconic location for film fans and architects alike. Sierra Burgess's Dad Is So Much More Than, Well, Sierra Burgess's Dad
Shannon Purser
The cast of Sierra Burgess Is a Loser is filled to the brim with familiar faces. Its star, Shannon Purser, is better known as Stranger Things's beloved, beleaguered Barb. The actress playing her mother, Lea Thompson, is a Hollywood legend in her own right. And, of course, the leading man is none other than the internet's Summer obsession, Noah Centineo. These actors have been in some of the most talked-about projects of the past few decades. But it turns out they're not the only ones: Alan Ruck, who plays Sierra's dad, has an iconic role under his belt too.

In the 1980s, Ruck broke onto the scene alongside members of the "Brat Pack." He costarred with Sean Penn and Ally Sheedy in 1983's Bad Boys and with Andrew McCarthy and John Cusack in Class. Although his roles in these movies were supporting ones, they gave him steady work and...

Ferris Bueller Ferrari Replica Goes Up for Auction
Ferris Bueller's Day Off is one of the most beloved movies in history, and now, you can own a piece of that 1980s magic. One of the three red Ferrari replicas that was used in the film is going up for auction in August. Alan Ruck's Cameron Frye character says, "The 1961 Ferrari 250 Gt California. Less than 100 were made," in the film. However, that would have been way too expensive to rent the real deal for the John Hughes movie. So, instead, Hughes had three replicas purchased to use and abuse.

The car that will be going up for auction next month is one of three 1985 Modena GTs built for Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Cameron's dad spent three years of his life restoring the beauty in the movie, only to have Ferries declare, "It is his fault he didn't lock the garage." The auction takes place from August 23rd to the 25th in Monterey,...
