If there's any "Star Trek" series that fully understands the franchise ethos of treading new ground and boldly heading out into the unknown, it's "Strange New Worlds." The throwback show with a hot new cast has spent two full seasons establishing itself as the best of both worlds: Abiding by the traditional morality tales of the fan-favorite "Star Trek: The Original Series," while still using every trick in the book to make this nerdy sci-fi stuff as fresh and exciting as possible. A perfect blend of episodic and serialized, a hilarious and oftentimes emotionally moving exploration into characters we thought we knew backwards and forwards by now, and the continuation of a uniquely optimistic mission statement about humanity's future and our capacity for good? Yeah, that's exactly how you win over the hearts of every Trekkie out there.

Well, this looks like a blast. “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” the series which best captures not just the spirit but the whimsy of “Star Trek” out of all the Paramount+ “Trek” shows that have bowed over the past decade, is back for Season 3. And a new teaser is here to get you excited for all the shenanigans, from a rom-com episode to an Agatha Christie-style murder mystery. A date for the new season still has not been set.

It's time for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to boldly go further into comedy territory.
Per Popverse, Uhura actor Celia Rose Gooding appeared at Emerald City Comic Con's Strange New Worlds panel, where they talked about the show's love of genre pastiche and what genre should be parodied in future seasons. Specifically, Gooding wanted to see Strange New Worlds tackle "Reality. Like, very Abbott Elementary, St. Denis Medical, The Office, just something like that." When the moderator asked if that meant applying The Office's signature mockumentary-style format to an episode's cinematography, they responded, "Sure."
Among Strange New World's most acclaimed episodes last season included a crossover with Star Trek:Lower Decks -- utilizing both animated sequences and casting Lower Decks' actors as their characters -- and a musical storyline where an "improbability field" causes the USS Enterprise crew to break into song and dance.

For more than a year, Star Trek fans have been waiting patiently for the return of Strange New Worlds for a resolution to the cliffhanger finale of Season 2. While the third season of the hit show is finally set to premiere sometime this year, CBS Studios and Paramount are wasting no time getting the jump on Season 4.
Earlier this month, it was announced that production on Season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is officially underway. The announcement was accompanied by a set photo featuring Ethan Peck (Spock), Celia Rose Gooding (Uhura), and Anson Mount (Captain Christopher Pike).
Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds aired on Paramount+ from June 2023 to August 2023. The season finale ended on a cliffhanger that evoked emotions similar to what we felt during the iconic two-part episode "The Best of Both Worlds" from Star Trek: The Next Generation. In 2017, "Star Trek" returned to the small screen after a 12-year hiatus with the debut of "Star Trek: Discovery," a big-budget show with slicker production values than the franchise had ever seen. It debuted on Paramount+ (still called CBS All Access in 2017), and it was to be the first of many new "Star Trek" shows that the streaming service would debut over the next few years. It was followed by "Short Treks," "Star Trek: Picard," "Star Trek: Lower Decks," and "Star Trek: Prodigy." The original U.S.S. Enterprise would also make a guest appearance in the second season of "Discovery," inspiring an Enterprise-set spinoff called "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds." Paramount+ also recently debuted the TV movie "Star Trek: Section 31."
Despite the glut of "Star Trek," however, fans weren't always on board. Some old-school Trekkies didn't like the new violent tone of "Discovery," as it didn't quite match the dry,...

The official Star Trek site announced today that production is now underway on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4. A first-look image from the set, featuring Ethan Peck (Spock), Celia Rose Gooding (Uhura), and Anson Mount (Christopher Pike), was also shared. You can check that out below.
I’m thrilled that another season of Strange New Worlds is underway, but we still don’t have a release date for the third season! All we know is that it will debut on Paramount+ sometime this year. The first season premiered in May, and the second dropped in June, so we can likely expect a summer release for this one as well. Hopefully, we’ll get a firm date for that soon. Strange New Worlds has been my favourite of the new Trek shows. It’s taken some big swings, with a musical episode and a crossover with the animated Lower Decks series.

The third season of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is set to debut sometime in 2025, although an actual release date hasn't yet been given. Paramount has already released several production photos from the upcoming third season, as well as a full-on preview, and Trekkies have been delighted at some of the upcoming stories. It seems that several of the show's main characters will, for at least one episode, be transformed into Vulcans, and some deep-cut fans are waiting to see Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) finally meet Dr. Roger Korby, a character not seen since the original "Star Trek" (when he was played by Michael Strong).

No official release date has been announced for the Season 3 premiere of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but Nami Melumad, who composes the music for the series, says to expect “surprises." Melumad, while speaking with Screen Rant about her newest project, the Pixar mini-series, Dream Productions, teased season 3 of the series, which currently boasts a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score. Melumad also composed scores for the animated series, Star Trek: Prodigy, and 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder.
One thing for sure, though, Melumad said fans shouldn’t expect another musical episode like “Subspace Rhapsody” from Season 2. “There’s not another musical episode, but it’s my favorite season,” Melumad said of the forthcoming third installment of Strange New Worlds, which stars Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn.
“I have a very high bar for Star Trek, and I really enjoyed it. There are very different genres in there. There will be surprises.

Star Trek (2009) set Lt. Nyota Uhura (Zoe Saldana) and Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) on an altered career trajectory where they almost end up switching starships. Director J.J. Abrams' 2009 reboot successfully recast the iconic characters from Star Trek: The Original Series with younger actors. Set in the alternate Kelvin timeline, Star Trek (2009)'s characters lived different lives than in Star Trek's Prime timeline, including how they all met and became the crew of the USS Enterprise.
Star Trek (2009)'s Kelvin timeline was created by Nero (Eric Bana), a Romulan time traveler seeking revenge on Ambassador Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and the United Federation of Planets. Nero implemented his plan to annihilate the Federation in 2258, destroying a Klingon moon and armada with his massive 24th-century starship, the Narada. Star Trek 2009 saw Uhura [Zoe Saldana] and Spock [Zachary Quinto] in a romantic relationship. While some fans didn't like the pairing, others liked that the chemistry first shown in Star Trek: The Original Series between Leonard Nimoy and Nichelle Nichols was at last given an outlet. Of course, Saldana and Quinto didn't have the same type of connection as their predecessors, but they seemed to make the relationship work...until it didn't.
Now, Saldana wants to know what will happen with her character and Quinto's if Star Trek 4 does get made. As she told Variety [via Trekmovie], "it just makes sense to see what is the next step in their relationship." Though the two parted ways with Uhura attempting to return the amulet Spock had given her, there is still plenty by way of storyline for the future of this couple. Saldana also wants to know how the couple will work together in the future.

Since 2017, the streaming service Paramount+ (originally called CBS All Access) has debuted the following "Star Trek" shows, all under the watchful eye of executive producer Alex Kurtzman: "Star Trek: Discovery," "Short Treks," "Star Trek: Picard," "Star Trek: Lower Decks," "Star Trek: Prodigy," and "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds." There was even a brief period when all of those shows were in production simultaneously. As of this writing, a TV movie called "Section 31" is due in the early months of 2025, and "Starfleet Academy" is in production. That's more trekking than we had in the 1990s.
Of course, the franchise has scaled back in recent years. All of the above series, save "Strange New Worlds," have come to an end, and it seems that the franchise aims to be a lot more modest going forward.
As the sole survivor, "Strange New Worlds" is one of the better choices to carry the torch for the property.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has yet to introduce the iconic Star Trek: The Original Series character, Hikaru Suku, who could be the perfect rival for Lt. Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia). Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has the opportunity to solve a Star Trek: Enterprise mystery that has lasted for over 19 years. In Enterprise's controversial finale, "These are the Voyages...", Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) visits the Nx-01 Enterprise in the holodeck, posing as the ship's Chef. Riker's version of Chef is friends with all the major characters on Enterprise: cooking and making pasta with Subcommander T'Pol (Jolene Blalock), Ensign Hoshi Sato (Linda Park), and even Dr. Phlox (John Billingsley). Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is finally making Star Trek: Enterprise more important. Originally airing from 2001 to 2005, Star Trek: Enterprise attempted to beat franchise fatigue with a prequel series set earlier in the Star Trek timeline. Star Trek: Enterprise starred Scott Bakula as Captain Jonathan Archer in command of the previously unknown Nx-01 Enterprise in the 2150s. Archer was joined by new characters in crew positions that were already familiar to Star Trek fans, like Ensign Hoshi Sato (Linda Park) handling communications, Chief Engineer Trip Tucker (Connor Trinneer), and Ensign Travis Mayweather (Anthony Montgomery) at the helm.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has wasted the opportunity to break bag this great legacy character. After being introduced in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, Anson Mount's Captain Christopher Pike quickly became a fan favorite. This led Paramount to greenlight a spin-off following Captain Pike, Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck), and their Enterprise crew, and Strange New Worlds was born. With pitch-perfect casting, Strange New Worlds has reintroduced several Star Trek legacy characters, including Lt. Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley).

When I first saw the 2009 Star Trek, I was struck by the linguistic superpowers of that film's Nyota Uhura (Zoe Saldana). They were familiar to me. It wasn't simply that this ability often arises in science fiction and fantasy. It's that there was another prominent character in Star Trek who had this ability. I am speaking, of course, of Hoshi Sato (Linda Park).
I was a bit irked by this at the time, as I was 13 and thus easily irked. I got over it. When 2022's Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premiered, however, and introduced us to a linguistically gifted Cadet Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) who wasn't quite sure if she belonged on the Enterprise, I found myself asking again, "Are they turning Uhura into Hoshi?"
To be clear, there is absolutey nothing wrong with being Hoshi Sato. As a fan of linguistics and general word nerd myself, Hoshi is...

Captain James T. Kirk and Lieutenant Nyota Uhura met the same way in two different Star Trek universes. Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and Lt. Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) voyage through the stars together for decades in Star Trek: The Original Series and the first six Star Trek movies. J.J. Abrams' Star Trek (2009) depicted how James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and Nyota Uhura (Zoe Saldana) met in the alternate Kelvin timeline.
14 years after Star Trek (2009), Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 finally depicted the first meeting between Lt. James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) and Ensign Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) in Star Trek's Prime timeline. Rhys Darby, the lead of HBO's Our Flag Means Death, will guest star in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but does this mean for season 3? The New Zealand-born Darby worked with Our Flag Means Death's executive producer and co-star Taika Waititi on What We Do In The Shadows, and played Murray Hewitt in Flight of the Conchords. Rhys Darby's acting credits, which include dramatic roles and an impressive array of voice-over work for animation and video games, might point to what's in store for Darby's Star Trek future.
The Nycc announcement, which came with a new clip from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, indicated that Rhys Darby's Star Trek character would be someone that Trekkies would already be familiar with. "I knew he was casting for Star Trek," Saldaa said at the BFI London Film Festival per The Hollywood Reporter, recalling when Abrams stopped by James Cameron's Avatar production and how that led to him casting her as the Kelvin Timeline's Uhura. "He and Jim were talking, and they come to set, and Jim lets him hold his little camera that he built. And I remember talking to JJ, and he's like, 'I'm going to call you, I really want to have a conversation with you. And then he walks away. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds can never repeat a mistake made by Star Trek: The Original Series. Strange New Worlds is a prequel to Tos, with the voyages of Captain Christopher Pike's (Anson Mount) Starship Enterprise taking place about 5-6 years before Captain James T. Kirk's (William Shatner) in Star Trek: The Original Series. Strange New Worlds honors Star Trek's classic format with episodic episodes involving a new planet and alien problem of the week. However, the Enterprise crew's character development is serialized as they grow, learn, and evolve.
Star Trek: The Original Series' classic season 1 episode, "The Devil in the Dark," has the unfortunate distinction of having no speaking parts for female characters. "The Devil in the Dark" involves the mystery of why a creature called a Horta was killing miners on the planet Janus VI. NBC even noticed the lack of female speaking roles, and...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' musical episode worked wonderfully thanks to two ingenious tricks woven into the characters and story. Written by Dana Horgan and Bill Wolkoff, and directed by Dermott Downs, with original songs composed by Tom Polce and Kay Hanley of Letters to Cleo, Star Trek's first-ever musical, "Subspace Rhapsody," may be the defining hour of Strange New Worlds. Not only did the "Subspace Rhapsody's" soundtrack top the Apple Music charts, but there have been singalong panels at WonderCon and IGN Live where audiences belted out the songs back to Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' characters.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 9, "Subspace Rhapsody," saw the Starship Enterprise investigate an unusual subspace fold. The romance in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds which has proven to be controversial among fans is actually an established canon event from the 1960s. When the spin-off series of Star Trek: Discovery was revealed to be a prequel to the beloved 1960s era of Star Trek, many people were skeptical about the show's ability to capture the essence of Star Trek: The Original Series characters. However, Strange New Worlds quickly became a hit thanks to the portrayal of legacy Star Trek characters like Captain Pike (Anson Mount), Spock (Ethan Peck), Lieutenant Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), and Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush).

Along with Mount and Ethan Peck as Lieutenant Spock, Romijn's iconic embodiment of Number One is why fans clamored for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, the trio's spinoff from their appearances in Star Trek: Discovery season 2.

It's widely accepted among Trekkies that no "Star Trek" series starts with its best foot forward. Almost every single series, from the 1960s all the way up to the Paramount+ era, has a rocky first season, presenting clumsy storytelling and strange character conceits that many Trekkies look back on with a wince. Generally speaking, a Trek series doesn't hit its stride until about season three.
I will hasten to note that even when Trek shows are struggling through their "bad" seasons, they usually still feature strong characters and a dynamic setting, so a curious viewer will not have to endure years of bad TV before it gets good. They'll just have to endure some awkward writing until it gets excellent. If one wants to watch "Star Trek: The Next Generation," one could simply start with season 3, and then ask a Trekkie friend to recommend vital episodes from seasons one and two.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds can set up a romance that deserved better in Star Trek: The Original Series' movies. Strange New Worlds season 3 will pick up from season 2's finale cliffhanger, resolving the crisis Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and the USS Enterprise face with the Gorn. But as seen in a first-look clip of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 that premiered at San Diego Comic-Con, life goes back to 'normal' aboard the Starship Enterprise, which has Lt. Anson Mount recalls recording Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' opening monologue while William Shatner was actually in space. As the Captain of the Starship Enterprise in Strange New Worlds, Mount is the latest to voice over Star Trek's classic opening speech, "Space... the final frontier..." over the show's opening credits.
