The Ancestral released theatrically in Vietnam last year. It held the top spot for two consecutive weekends, making it the second consecutive success for the visionary director Kiet. His bold style first caught the eye of the international community after his film Furie became Vietnam’s highest-grossing film of all time; the film went on to become the country’s submission to the Academy Awards for Best International Feature.

One of the most time-honored genre setups in history, the haunted house comes about through a nearly-incalculable number of entries that offer up everything, from the glossy mainstream work to the barest indie productions. A mainstay in American and European productions, Asia had tackled the genre with random success with the wild Japanese classic “Hausu” to the traditional Taiwanese effort “The Heirloom,” proving that the genre had staying power around the world. Already tackled before in “The House in the Alley,” director Le-Van Kiet's new film, a box-office smash in Vietnam upon its initial release, will now stream on Screambox from May 2, 2023.

Cinedigm and Bloody Disgusting have acquired all North American rights to The Ancestral, the disturbing new horror film from renowned director Le-Van Kiet (The Requin). The Ancestral will be a Screambox Original, news that was first announced by Deadline this afternoon.

Exclusive: Following six seasons as Howard Hamlin on AMC’s megahit Better Call Saul, Patrick Fabian has signed on to lead the indie The Way We Speak from writer-director Ian Ebright (From the Sky).

Billed as an allegory about America’s fractured politics and culture, the film follows Simon (Fabian), an up-and-coming commentator whose world is turned upside down when his best friend and debate opponent suffers a fatal heart attack. Simon refuses to leave the spotlight at an annual thought-leader summit, leading to an obsession with his new opponent and a growing rift with his ailing wife, Claire (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’s Diana Coconubo).

Ebright’s Broken Telegraph is producing the pic, also to star Kailey Rhodes (Black Pool), Ayanna Berkshire (Twilight) and Lowell Deo (Z Nation). Fabian is repped by The Kohner Agency and Essential Talent Management.

Endeavor Content’s Asia sales operation has sealed a raft of theatrical deals on Vietnamese horror film The Ancestral, from Furie director Le Van Kiet.

Theatrical rights to the film have gone to the Middle East (Salim Ramia & Co), Taiwan (MovieCloud), Thailand, Cambodia and Laos (M Pictures) and Singapore and Malaysia (Clover Films).

Endeavor Content is also closing deals for Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar, Australia and New Zealand.
