Hot on the heels of his excellent “The Soul Reaper,” director Tran Huu Tan next decides to turn his attention to a famous Vietnamese legend in the story of Tam and Cam for his latest project, which became the third-highest grossing Vietnamese Horror film of all time. Exploring a famous legend in the country that has very little exposure outside its borders, the infusion of “Cinderella” style structure with conventional Asian ghost movie aesthetics is also transplanted into a rural setting for a great spin on the legend.
Living in a remote village, stepsisters Tam (Rima Thanh Vy) and Cam (Lam Thanh My) try to live with a curse placed on the area years ago when The Pale Sire (Hanh Thuy Ngo Pham) tricked the villagers into offering a sacrifice to it. Hot on the heels of the initial success of the film “Hellbound Village,” director Tran Huu Tan set out to continue the exploits of the community by offering a new entry set in that universe. Taking the same route to success by adapting the novel by writer Thao Trang, the move proved risky as a one-week delay in release nearly caused controversy with the film's release about to occur. Now, after a record run in theaters that saw it earn over 2 million to become one of the top seven highest-grossing Vietnamese movies of the year, Tan's new film is set to continue the modern Vietnamese resurgence in the genre box office.

While other parts of Asia have been making horror movies for decades, Vietnam had a late start. Tales of non-war horror didn’t really begin to crop up until after the 20th century. Since then, Vietnam has been trying to catch up. There is indeed a learning curve to consider when watching V-horror; it’s a fairly new genre for many filmmakers. But as someone watches Screambox‘s latest acquisition, the aptly titled and now streaming Vietnamese Horror Story, it’s evident that Vietnam has a lot to offer in terms of unique cultural frights and thrills. Vietnamese Horror Story (Chuyện Ma Gần Nhà) uses not only a familiar format, but also a digestible one; Trần Hữu Tấn‘s movie is an anthology. The first of its kind in Vietnam.
In Vietnamese Horror Story, a group of friends shares ghost stories when the power goes out during a rainy night.
