Why Cal and Merrin's Jedi: Survivor kiss is actually a win for bi representation
Image
Cal Kestis and magic-wielding Nightsister Merrin are probably the only endgame romance Jedi: Survivor players saw coming. They're the only two members of the original crew who wouldn't be a weird, borderline uncomfortable match, and to mildly spoil the game for you, they are -- as the title implies -- miraculous survivors of a fairly dark middle chapter in an expected Star Wars trilogy.

Anyone who read Jedi: Battle Scars in 2023 shortly before the game came out might have been slightly thrown off by Cal and Merrin's kiss toward the end of the game (you don't get to choose it -- it happens in a cutscene). I know I was. Penned by accomplished video game writer Sam Maggs, the book takes place between Jedi: Fallen Order and Survivor, its sequel. One of the storylines features Merrin diving into a romantic relationship with another woman. The books, as usual, are much...

Star Wars Can’t Make This Wish of John Boyega Come True After Gutwrenching Death of Harrison Ford’s Han Solo
Image
John Boyega, best known for his role as Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, recently made an appearance at the Calgary Expo this past Sunday. During a lively Q&a, Boyega revealed a list of actors he’d love to work with, and among them was none other than Harrison Ford.

Although fans lit up at the idea of a Finn and Han Solo reunion, the tragic death of Ford’s iconic character in The Force Awakens sadly makes this dream impossible within the Star Wars universe. Despite the loss, Boyega’s admiration for Ford tells fans just how powerful and lasting Han Solo’s legacy truly is.

John Boyega reveals the actors he’d love to work with in the future!

The Calgary Expo, held from April 24 to 27, was absolutely buzzing this year with a galaxy of stars in attendance, including David Boreanaz, Nicholas Hoult, and Star Wars favorite John Boyega.

She-Hulk Writers Marvel Success Proves The Comic Industry Can Learn From YA Authors
Image
YA authors like Rainbow Rowell, C.S. Pacat, and Sam Maggs bring emotional depth to comics, creating impactful stories that resonate. Rowell's She-Hulk run showcased emotional moments, while Pacat's Dark Knights of Steel explored Bruce Wayne's origins in a chilling way. The comic industry has a long history of YA stories, with DC particularly focusing on YA themes through novels and graphic novels.

Like her title character, Sensational She-Hulk writer Rainbow Rowells time at Marvel has been a smashing success, as her second series writing Jennifer Walters wraps up in August with its tenth issue. However, her time at Marvel has shown that YA authors bring something special to the comic book industry, and she isnt the only one to do so. Fellow YA writers C.S. Pacat and Sam Maggs have both made waves in DC and Star Trek comics, respectively, proving that there is success to be found in the combination of genres.

Star Trek Reveals the Hilarious Origin of Picard's "Engage" Catchphrase
Image
"Engage" is Jean-Luc Picard's iconic catchphrase in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The origin of the phrase is revealed in Star Trek: Picard's Academy #4 comic. "Engage" was first used during a pivotal moment in the series premiere, making it a memorable and important command in Star Trek lore.

Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Picard's Academy #4A Star Trek prequel comic set during Jean-Luc Picard's days at Starfleet Academy recently showed how the future captain of the Enterprise came up with his "Engage" catchphrase, and it's wonderfully hilarious. Although an iconic line, most fans understandably associate Picard more with his "Make it so" command. However, Picard's original uses of the word "Engage" in The Next Generation play a much more memorable role, despite being less famous, and now both Trekkies and Trekkers alike can finally see its origin story.

Although Jean-Luc was not the first Starfleet captain to say, "Engage," the...

After 25 Years, DC's Forgotten Batgirl Finally Gets the Shout Out She Deserves
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Titans: Beast World Tour - Gotham #1!

DC Comics finally acknowledges that Huntress was the Batgirl who followed Barbara Gordon. Huntress' time as Batgirl is largely forgotten, but this Titans story gives her the respect she deserves. This recognition of Huntress as Batgirl could lead to her return as a prominent character in DC Comics.

After 25 years, DC Comics finally acknowledges who the real third Batgirl is. In official DC continuity, despite the pre-Crisis existence of Betty Kane, Barbara Gordon is acknowledged as the first Batgirl, and most audiences recall Cassandra Cain being the one to take her cowl. That order isn't entirely accurate, however. Cass does become Batgirl shortly after Barbara steps down, but there is a forgotten Batgirl before her.

In Titans: Beast World Tour - Gotham #1's "Claw & Order" by Sam Maggs, and Pj Holden, DC finally acknowledges that Helena Bertinelli, also known as Huntress,...

Picard's Starfleet Training Makes His Bond with Guinan Even More Meaningful
Image
Picard's prequel comic shows how he learned to overcome his insecurities and rely on others, which later helps him become a great captain. Sharing his fears with Doq and Marty in the comic mirrors Picard's later relationship with Guinan, where he seeks her counsel and makes important decisions based on her advice. Picard's days at Starfleet Academy provided him with the emotional growth and knowledge necessary to connect with Guinan as captain, creating one of the most important bonds in all of Star Trek.

One of the most celebrated relationships in Star Trek is between Jean-Luc Picard and Guinan, and while Paramount's Picard TV show revealed how Guinan first learned of Picard, a prequel comic from Picard's Academy days now shows why he would later be able to connect with her in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The revelation Picard makes in this prequel comic shares similarities with what...

Huntress Becomes Gotham's Deadliest Woman Alive in Twisted Bat-Family Transformation
Image
Warning! Contains spoilers for Titans: Beast World Tour - Gotham #1!

Huntress is infected by a beast spore and transformed into a panther, making her one of the deadliest members of the Bat-Family in Gotham. Huntress has always been the black sheep of the Bat-Family, willing to use lethal force and often clashing with Batman. In her panther form, Huntress becomes more driven to hunt down and destroy corruption in Gotham, making her even more dangerous.

A beast spore has infected Huntress, transforming her into a true Catwoman and one of the deadliest people in Gotham. The Bat-Family is one of the largest crime-fighting families in the DC Universe, which is why it's no surprise that some members occasionally get lost in the crowd, including Helena Bertinelli. It's going to be a lot harder to forget Huntress now after her feline transformation.

Star Trek Reveals the Secret Behind the Most Important Fight of Picard's Life
Image
In "Star Trek: Picard's Academy #2," a comic book, Picard witnesses a student being bullied but chooses not to intervene, believing it's the bullied student's responsibility to handle the situation. The comic book connects to the "Tapestry" episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," suggesting that Picard's decision to help a friend in a fight may have been influenced by his earlier failure to protect a bullied student. The inclusion of time travel in the "Tapestry" episode adds complexity to the theory, implying that Past Picard allowed himself to be stabbed in order to save Future Picard, potentially changing his motivations in the original brawl.

Star Trek Has Been Hiding a Rick and Morty Reference Right Under Fans' Noses
Image
Star Trek: Picard's Academy comic reveals a surprising connection to Rick and Morty through the characters Doqtis and Marta, whose names resemble the original version of Rick and Morty, Doc and Mharti. The comic explores Picard's struggle to make friends at Starfleet Academy due to his family trauma, but Doq, an El-Aurian like Guinan, provides support despite Picard's dismissal of the need for friends. As the cadets face off against Romulans in their important Evasive Maneuvers exam, Doq and Marty will be by Picard's side, hopefully coming up with escape ideas that are less disgusting than what would be seen in Rick and Morty.

Star Trek has always boldly gone where no one has gone before, seeking out new life and new civilizations, but an Easter egg in Star Trek: Picard's Academy has revealed one strange new world that itself owes much to Star Trek: Rick and Morty. This comic...

1 Star Trek Death Motivated Picard to Join Starfleet

This comic expands on a random comment Picard makes in The Next Generation and turns it into the main reason behind his career choice. The comic also references a recent episode of Star Trek: Picard, connecting Picard's choice of words about his mother to a retcon in the show.

Star Wars Secretly Set Up Ahsoka's Nightsister Twist 6 Months Ago
Image

A major twist in the new Ahsoka show reveals the existence of more Nightsisters, debunking the belief that they were nearly extinct after the Clone Wars. The novel Jedi: Battle Scars sets up the reveal of the Nightsisters' homeworld and their connection to community, explaining why Merrin remained powerful outside of Dathomir. The community aspect of the Nightsisters' magicks allows for the introduction of the Great Mothers, revealing that the Nightsisters are an intergalactic race with their power derived from unity within covens.

Although the new Ahsoka show features a major twist regarding the Nightsisters, the reveal was actually set up six months prior in a different Star Wars project. Star Trek: Picard's Academy Hints at the Return of a Controversial Classmate

Picard Would Have Been a Mediocre Captain Without 1 Influence, Star Trek Confirms
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek – Picard’s Academy #1Idw's latest Star Trek series, set during the early days of Jean-Luc Picard's tenure at Starfleet Academy, promises to depict how young, brash cadet seen in its debut issue goes on to become the stalwart captain of the USS Enterprise-d. While a naturally capable student, Picard's experiences at the Academy shaped him from someone who could only trust himself into the familiar leader who valued every possible perspective.

Star Trek – Picard’s Academy #1 – by writer Sam Maggs, artist Ornella Greco, colorist Charlie Kirchoff and letterer Jeff Eckleberry – finds young Jean-Luc hesitant to put his faith in his fellow cadets, believing himself and his abilities superior to those around him. Cal Kestis Is Very Similar To Another Jedi - And That Means He's Going To Die
Image
Cal Kestis’ overarching story in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and its predecessor is very similar to one other Jedi’s journey – and these parallels might help predict his eventual fate. Cal Kestis (Cameron Monaghan) was introduced in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order as another Order 66 survivor. Stranded on the planet Bracca but eventually found by the crew of the Mantis, Fallen Order explored Cal’s trauma and how he learned to cope by finding something to fight for. Cal is far from the only Order 66 survivor in Star Wars, but not all survivors’ stories are the same. Each Jedi had to find a way to stay alive and deal with their grief in ways unique to them.

That doesn’t mean, however, that certain characters’ experiences can’t overlap. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor continues Cal’s quest to find his purpose in the galaxy. While he, like many others, dedicates...

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor - Cal’s Story Synopsis So Far
Image
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is set to release at the end of April 2023 and continues the story of Cal Kestis, one of the few surviving Jedi in the galaxy. Alongside his companions, Cal has quickly become a Star Wars fan favorite, and players should be looking forward to seeing his next adventure. Cal has been through a lot in his short life, and with Jedi: Survivor set five years after Fallen Order, now is the perfect time to look back on a story synopsis of Cal’s life so far.

Studios, Dark Horse Comics, and Image Comics continued to offer some of the year's best material, while superhero imprints like Marvel and DC surprised everyone by deciding to get in on the action as well. Titles like Blood Stained Teeth by Patrick Reynolds and Christian Ward, I Hate This Place by Kyle Starks and Artyom Topilin, and Skottie Young's The Me You Love in the Dark debuted to massive acclaim, creeping out audiences in the process of simultaneously impressing them.

Horror became such a running theme in 2022 that even superhero imprints were dipping their toes in the genre, such as the DC's Black Label cosmic-horror Aquaman: Andromeda. It's also worth noting that the popular horror soap opera satire Buffy the Vampire Slayer...

Archie Comics Turns Betty into a Horror Icon as The Final Girl
Image
The perennial sweetheart of Archie Comics is about to become the world's next icon of horror. Riverdale's beloved girl-next-door, Betty Cooper, is set to star in an anthology one-shot that reinvents the character as the most well-known staple of horror films.

While Archie Comics has been around nearly as long as the medium of comic books has, the publisher's flagship franchise, Archie, has had a few major shakeups storytelling wise in the past several years. The adventures of all-American teen Archie and his gang of pals shows no sign of stopping, but the brand has seen a few horror twists for Archie. After the success of the zombie-filled Afterlife with Archie and the religious horror Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, the company took even more risks with its new Archie Horror brand. From Jughead being a ravenous werewolf to Veronica developing a thirst for blood, it seems as though all the...

Tell No Tales: Pirates of the Southern Seas

By Sam Maggs and Kendra Wells

160 pages, Amulet Books, $12.99/$21.99

Sam Maggs has carved out a fine career writing imaginative young adult fiction and graphic novels. Here, she teams with artist Kendra Wells to tackle the two best known female pirates: Anne Bonny and Mary Read. They are sailing the high seas along with Calico Jack and having a grand old time.

There’s a four-page text section discussing the historic facts behind the pirates and its makes far more interesting reading than the simplified tale presented ahead of it.

Being a pirate wasn’t easy and it was harder for women. In both cases, Bonny and Read had to discuss themselves as men to fit in, with all the complications attendant to that. At the time, Bonny had left her husband and married Jack, only to fall for Read, thinking she was a he.

Brie Larson in Captain Marvel (2019)
‘Captain Marvel: Cosmic Cat-tastrophe’ Graphic Novel Review
Brie Larson in Captain Marvel (2019)
Written by Sam Maggs | Art by Sweeney Boo | Published by Idw Publishing / Marvel Comics

I must confess that when this book first came across my desk, I thought it was Marvel’s attempt to jump on DC’s bandwagon. DC have been producing a very good series of Young Adult (12-16) and Middle Grade (8-12) level books, several of which I have reviewed, and proving there is a market there, and that holy grail, a predominantly female market at that. Marvel, though, have tried attracting younger readers for some time, with their Star Comics line way back when, and the more recent Marvel Adventures all ages books, which were also surprisingly decent reads. The Marvel Action line, however, is a collaboration between Marvel Comics and Idw, which I guess means Marvel licenses over their characters, Idw do all the creative work, and then Marvel get final editorial approval. Comic book collaborations are good,...

Harry Potter Creator J.K. Rowling Under Fire For Anti-Trans Views
The Harry Potter franchise is beloved, but creator J.K. Rowling has frequently been the subject of heavy criticism over the last few years for various reasons. The side-stepping of Dumbledore’s sexuality in the Fantastic Beasts films, for example, or the troubling depiction of a rare Asian character in the Wizarding World in the same movie series. The latest furore is particularly disheartening for fans though, as Rowling has shown her support for anti-trans views.

Today, the author responded to the firing of policy researcher Maya Forstater from her job at the Centre for Global Development due to her sharing transphobic comments on Twitter. One tweet, for instance, read “men cannot change into women.” Rowling made clear that she’s firmly in defence of Forstater, using the #IStandWithMaya hashtag and posting a message that many have seen as offensive and dismissive of the trans community.

Here’s Rowling’s original tweet:

Dress however you please.
