10 Sci-Fi Villains Who Would Perfectly Fit In The Mad Max Universe
Image
The richly imagined world of Mad Max boasts plenty of memorable villains, but the desolate landscape of the Wasteland could also believably house many other classic foes. While the likes of Immortan Joe, Lord Humungus, and Rictus Erectus make Mad Max a fascinatingly varied and frightening franchise, there are many other characters who would fit right in as villains in this world created by George Miller. While the Mad Max series boasts several sequels, if a crossover ever happened, these would be ideal candidates for inclusion.

Some of the smartest sci-fi villains of all time have characteristics that make them feel right at home within the Wasteland. From recent sci-fi releases that clearly pay homage to Miller’s creator right through to earlier classics, the post-apocalyptic, drought-stricken landscape would make for an excellent home to plenty of cunning criminals, deranged devils, and wicked wastelanders. While it’s unlikely these villains...

Five Post-Apocalyptic Horror Movies to Stream This Week
Image
World-ending apocalypses are inherently terrifying, but sometimes what comes after is even scarier. The remnants of humanity are left to pick up the pieces of a world torn apart by devastating catastrophe, with resources far scarcer than ever-present threats.

This week’s streaming picks belong to post-apocalyptic horror movies that explore life after the world as we know it has ended, where conditions are harsh and survival odds are low.

While the frequent recurring theme of post-apocalyptic movies highlights how humankind is its own worst enemy, these five titles take drastically different approaches. Some favor retro style, while others infuse their wastelands with a heaping helping of inhuman monsters.

Here’s where you can stream them this week.

5 Deep Cut Winter Horror Movies You Maybe Haven’t Seen
Image
No genre is as prolific as horror, so it’s understandable that movies fall through the cracks all the time. That is where this new recurring column, Deep Cuts, comes in. While some movies remain popular and talked about, regardless of age, countless others have faded into the background or obscurity.

Each themed installment of this series will spotlight several overlooked, unappreciated or generally unknown movies from the past — some from way back when, and others from not so long ago — that could use some more attention.

The first edition of this column will look at horror movies featuring wintry settings. It may not feel or look like winter wherever you are right now, but somewhere it’s cold. And with a frosty backdrop, the five winter horror movies here feel more bleak than usual.

A Cold Night’s Death (1973)

Alarm Pictures Closes North America on Lenin M. Sivam’s ‘The Protector’ (Exclusive)
Image
Alarm Pictures has closed North American rights from Hewes Pictures on “The Protector,” the latest film from Canadian writer-director Lenin M. Sivam, in advance of its July 28 world premiere at Montreal’s Fantasia Festival.

The U.S. streaming release date is set for Monday, Jan. 23. Limited theatrical openings begin the Friday prior at New York’s Film Noir Cinema and at iPic on Sunset Blvd. in Los Angeles, where the film will run for one week a piece.

U.K. and Ireland rights to “The Protector” have been acquired by Reel 2 Reel Film/Trinity Entertainment. Level Film will release “The Protector” in Canada.

A U.K.-based film distributor that this year picked up Serbian-German actor Branko Tomovic’s folk horror “Vampir,” Alarm Pictures specialises in edgy yet commercial “genre” film titles. That perfectly describes “The Protector.”

Starring Chelsea Clark (“Ginny and Georgia”), it turns on Evelyn, 21, pictured near the...

Paloma Kwiatkowski in Multiverse (2019)
Encountering Multiverses in Canadian Indie Sci-Fi 'Multiverse' Trailer
Paloma Kwiatkowski in Multiverse (2019)
"We're trying to reach an identical universe." Saban Films has revealed the official US trailer for an indie sci-fi thriller from Canada titled Multiverse, which is a new title for this film also known as Entangled. Directed by Indian filmmaker Gaurav Seth, it does indeed mess with the multiverse theory. Four brilliant university students are forced to confront themselves in terrifying new ways when their Quantum Physics experiment leads to an entangled parallel existence that leaves them questioning who they are and what is real. Is only one of the universes real? Or are they both real? How do they gain control of everything once again? The film stars Paloma Kwiatkowski, Munro Chambers, Robert Naylor, Sandra Mae Frank, with Marlee Matlin (last seen in Coda). This originally premiered at a few small festivals back in 2019, but is only now getting an official release - which isn't a good sign. I like the concept,...

‘Degrassi: The New Generation’: EPs & Cast Reflect On Teen Drama’s Longevity, Pitch Potential Reboot Threads – Atx
Image
Nearly six years after Degrassi: The Next Generation wrapped in 2015, co-creator Linda Schuyler and stars Stefan Brogren, Aislinn Paul, Shane Kippel, Luke Bilyk, Munro Chambers, Lauren Collins and more reunited to celebrate the series’ lasting impact.

The Degrassi: The Next Generation reunion kicked off this year’s Atx Television Festival on Friday. For many of the cast members, reuniting with their on-screen classmates was just like meeting with longtime school buddies as they reminisced on favorite moments from the teen drama.

“What a joy it is to be reminded of those scenes we’ve done together over the years,” Schuyler told her team.

From scenes about sexuality and abortion to mental health issues, Schuyler and the Degrassi cast reflected on how the series unapologetically tackled controversial topics, which often caused more of a stir in the United States than in Canada when they first aired. Today’s shows like Euphoria,...

WFF2019: Entangled is Bland and Forgettable [Review]
Munro Chambers really impressed earlier this year with a stellar performance in the hugely entertaining Harpoon (review) so when his name appeared on the credit list of Entangled, I was instantly drawn to the movie which on closer review, sounded like it would be right up my alley.

Chambers, along with Paloma Kwiatkowski, Robert Naylor, and Sandra Mae Frank, star as a group of college students experimenting with time travel. Their experiments yield results but they don't realize just how successful their experiments are until months after one of them is tragically killed in a car accident and the dead colleague appears seemingly out of nowhere and carries on as if nothing has...

Film Review: ‘Harpoon’
Prolific Canadian writer-director Rob Grant, who’s made five features and one documentary in the last decade, once again puts a limited setting and budget to resourceful use in “Harpoon.” This thriller about three none-too-loyal friends adrift on a yacht made a splash at Fantasia (after a lower-key Rotterdam premiere) with its genre-fan-friendly mix of grisly action and jaunty black comedy.

That balance was particularly successful in Grant’s 2012 “Mon Ami,” wherein two would-be kidnappers kept bungling their way to an ever-higher accidental body count. His latest is slicker but also more glibly mean-spirited, with characters it’s hard to care about and some twists that seem more contrived than clever — or credible. Nonetheless, . It opens in a few U.S. theaters Oct. 4, followed a few days later by Blu-ray and Tvod release.

The arch tone is set immediately by comedian Brett Gelman’s omnipresent narrator, who paraphrases Aristotle on...

‘Harpoon’ Review: Aquatic Horror That Finds Authenticity Beneath the Gore
Writer/director Rob Grant wastes zero time getting us in the right frame of mind with Brett Gelman’s perfectly sardonic voice narrating an auspiciously violent collision of three close friends caught in a lovers’ misunderstanding. Harpoon‘s first scene provides effect—a stranded yacht in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean with “Sos” duct taped to the deck—while the second supplies cause as Jonah (Munro Chambers) gets his face punched in by best friend Richard (Christopher Gray) with the latter’s long-term partner Sasha (Emily Tyra) imploring him to stop. Move those temperamental seeds of mistrust to a boat’s tight quarters and we can guess why the vessel will eventually find itself in distress. The question then becomes which, if any, of those passengers will be alive to accept help.

The misunderstanding: Richard thinks Jonah and Sasha are having an affair. It stems from texts found on...

Q&a: Director Rob Grant Discusses Exploring the Dark Side of Human Behavior in Harpoon
When their yacht breaks down in isolated ocean waters, three "friends" find out just how much they really hate each other (and what they're capable of doing to each other) in Rob Grant's Harpoon. With the dark comedy coming out in select cinemas and on VOD this October from Dread, we caught up with co-writer/director Rob Grant to discuss assembling his game cast, finding a shooting location at the last minute, the challenges of filming on the water (especially in an area filled with curious kayakers), getting Brett Gelman involved as the movie's narrator, and exploring the "darker side of human behavior."

Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, Rob, and congratulations on Harpoon! How and when did you get the idea for Harpoon?

Rob Grant: Thanks for the support! The idea originated on just the premise of three people who hate each other stuck...

Review: Riot Girls Introduces the Gay Avengers of the Apocalypse
Zombies, aliens, mysterious diseases, and natural disasters: these are the elements that most frequently drive the post-apocalyptic narratives dominating our movies, TV shows, and video games. It can seem monotonous, as their similarities begin to blend together, but Jovanka Vuckovic’s feature debut, Riot Girls, succeeds in separating itself from the mould, with a hard rock survival tale that feels like something The CW could produce at their full potential.

Riot Girls is introduced cleverly through a comic strip, walking the audience through the aftermath of a mysterious disease that decimated the fictional mid-’90s town of Potter’s Bluff, with all parents succumbing to the disease. What’s left of the town is split in two: a battleground between the town’s children.

Death to the patriarchy is something we often express a desire for, and when it finally comes, we imagine that an anarchic town would thrive under its freedom,...

‘Riot Girls’ Review: A New Generation Takes the Reins in Post-Apocalyptic Actioner
Following her success helming a segment in the well-received, woman-directed horror anthology Xx, former Rue Morgue editor Jovanka Vuckovic delivers her feature film debut with the high concept, post-apocalyptic teen actioner Riot Girls. Obviously borrowing from the underground feminist punk movement Riot grrrl for its title (with an appropriate aesthetic and love for Joan Jett), screenwriter Katherine Collins’ tale of rival gangs also takes many cues from “The Walking Dead” by applying that 90s-era subculture to its social commentary separating humans into two categories: those who kill to survive and those who kill for power. In a world where adulthood spells death via an unexplained gut rot, teenagers are forced to take control. And if the microcosm of Potter’s Bluff is any indication, youthful exuberance divides on the poverty line.

On one side of the bridge reside rich kids who’ve transformed their high school into a fortress run...

Fantasia 2019: ‘Harpoon’ & ‘Riot Girls’ Review
As our Fantasia Fest coverage winds down, here’s a double-bill of two new films from actor Munro Chambers, who came to prominence back in 2015 with a little film called Turbo Kid. His latest films see the actor embrace both ends of the character spectrum: hero and villain. Or do they?

Harpoon

Stars: Munro Chambers, Christopher Gray, Emily Tyra | Written and Directed by Rob Grant

Wealthy Richard (Christopher Gray) is prone to fits of violent anger, particularly when he believes his girlfriend Sasha (Emily Tyra) is cheating on him with his best friend Jonah (Munro Chambers) — who’s been having worse luck than even his Biblical namesake. Once they reassure him that his fears are unfounded, Richard invites Sasha and Jonah on an excursion aboard his yacht The Naughty Buoy to make amends. What starts out as a pleasure cruise becomes a fateful trip when festering suspicions and resentments bubble to the surface,...

Fantasia 2019: Beware of the Harpoon! [Review]
Rob Grant's latest thriller Harpoon is the latest entry into the fine collection of movies which take place in one location. In this case, we have a trio of friends on a yacht in the middle of the open ocean.

Richard (Christopher Gray), Jonah (Munro Chambers) and Sasha (Emily Tyra) are long-time friends with a ton of baggage. Richard is loaded and kind of a dick who is also generous to his friends. Sasha is a nurse and also Richard's long-time girlfriend while Jonah is a struggling with the fact that his parents were disappointed in him and because they died during a trip he bought for them; he also feels a little guilty.

Harpoon opens with an ugly fight that then turns into a day trip on Richard's yachts as a feeble attempt to make amends. The trio's day trip turn...

Fantasia 2019 Review: Pitch-Black Comedy Thriller Harpoon Goes for the Jugular
A lean, mean thriller with pitch-black humor pumping through its veins, Harpoon has friendship on its mind. Throughout life, friendships are forged on various foundations of need and utility, but sometimes it’s simply a matter of having grown up together. As you get older and drift apart, that foundation can become weak and precarious. That’s the type of friendship in focus here, where three friends are bound by their lengthy history, but perhaps shouldn’t be. When the trio are left stranded in the middle of the ocean after their yacht breaks down, both their friendships and their lives are tested in harrowing ways.

Thanks to snappy narration via the Narrator (Stranger Thing’s Brett Gelman), no time is wasted cutting straight to the chase. Richard (Christopher Gray) is the rich son of a mob boss and has a serious anger management problem. The Narrator barely has enough...

Madison Iseman & Paloma Kwiatkowski in Punk Rock 'Riot Girls' Trailer
"There's people out there, they want to kill us!" Cranked Up Films has unveiled an official trailer for a punk rock apocalyptic love story titled Riot Girls, the feature directorial debut of Canadian filmmaker Jovanka Vuckovic (of "The Box" segment from Xx). After all the adults are wiped out from a mysterious disease, the surviving kids split into two groups: the have not Eastsiders vs. the tyrannical Westside Titans. When one of their own is captured by the Titans, it's up to punk rockers and best friends Nat and Scratch to lead the East side teens on a deadly, high-octane mission that will forever alter the future of Potter's Bluff. Madison Iseman and Paloma Kwiatkowski co-star, with a young cast including Alexandre Bourgeois, Ajay Friese, Munro Chambers, Carson MacCormac, and Jenny Raven. This looks gnarly, a spunky mash-up of genres and concepts, might be a big debut to keep an eye on this fall.

Bloody Promo Trailer for Stranded on a Yacht Dark Comedy 'Harpoon'
"Better than Titanic!" Yellow Veil Pictures has debuted an official promo trailer for an indie dark comedy horror thriller titled Harpoon, the latest feature from Canadian filmmaker Rob Grant. This just premiered at the Rotterdam Film Festival this year and is on the hunt for distributors at the Cannes Market, which is where this trailer comes from. Rivalries, dark secrets, and sexual tension emerge when three best friends find themselves stranded on a yacht in the middle of the ocean due to suspicious circumstances. Sounds a bit like Holiday or The Boat, but maybe not entirely. Starring Christopher Gray, Munro Chambers, and Emily Tyra. The best part about this trailer is the ridiculous fake quotes they use throughout, mocking all the ridiculous quotes that usually appear in most trailers anyway. Ha. Good stuff. Here's the first promo trailer (+ festival poster) for Rob Grant's Harpoon, direct from YouTube: Harpoon is...

First Look at Dark Comedy Harpoon [Trailer]
The lost-at-sea trope usually plays out as a horror, thriller, drama or a combination of the three but comedy isn't, generally speaking, thrown into the mix.

Enter writer/director Rob Grant with his new feature Harpoon.

Starring Munro Chambers (Turbo Kid), Emily Tyra (Code Black), and Christopher Gray ("The Mist"), the movie is described as a "dark comedy about the rivalries, dark secrets, and sexual tension that amount when three best friends find themselves stranded on a yacht in the middle of the ocean under suspicious circumstances."

Though the first teaser trailer doesn't really provide much in the way of anything story-wise, I do love that it plays nothing like a comedy and therefore, I'm intrigued.

Harpoon will be making...

Knuckleball (2018)
Film Review: ‘Knuckleball’
Knuckleball (2018)
It’s winter and a boy is unintentionally home alone, but what follows is more in the realm of mortal peril than wacky hijinks in “Knuckleball.” This admirably lean thriller, in which a 12-year-old dumped at grandpa’s during his parents’ vacation ends up fighting for life, doesn’t necessarily hold up to close scrutiny in terms of credibility. Yet while you’re watching, helmer Michael Peterson effectively earns suspension of disbelief with stark atmospherics, solid performances and a persuasive escalation of panic. The Canadian feature is opening on three U.S. screens simultaneous with its digital-formats release.

Henry (Luca Villacis) is by all appearances a typical kid, glued to his video games, not especially happy about being dropped off at a barely remembered relative’s isolated farmhouse while mom (Kathleen Munroe) and dad (Chenier Hundal) head south. It’s even less welcome because grandfather Jacob (Michael Ironside) is a...

Interview: Daily Dead Chats with the Legendary Michael Ironside for Knuckleball
Throughout the 40-plus years he’s been working in the film industry, legendary actor Michael Ironside has thrilled viewers with an endless array of memorable characters that have forever changed the landscape of cinema. For his latest project, Ironside steps into the haunting world of Knuckleball, in which he plays Jacob, a grandfather tasked with caring for his grandson, Henry (Luca Villacis), over the course of a weekend, with danger lurking at every turn (to say anything more would give away some major plot points).

Daily Dead had the distinct pleasure of speaking with Ironside earlier this week, and admittedly, he did much of the heavy lifting during our interview, diving into numerous facets of the production of Knuckleball, including working with director Michael Peterson and reuniting with his Turbo Kid co-star Munro Chambers, and he also discussed how this film taps into some universal problems that we’re all facing these days,...

Knuckleball (2018)
Knuckleball Trailer: Do What Grandpa Says or Die
Knuckleball (2018)
Henry gets dropped off at grandpa's house in the middle of nowhere in the trailer for Knuckleball. There's three rules that the 12-year old must follow: Lend a Hand, Do What He Says, and Keep Your Phone Charged, which Henry does, for the most part. One of the main points is that little Henry learns to throw a killer knuckleball from his grandfather after chopping some wood. However, things take a turn for the worse when Grandpa mysteriously passes away in his sleep. The tagline for the film reads, "To catch a predator he must think like one," which should give one a good idea of what they're in for with Knuckleball.

Since Henry's parents have left him with grandpa, his only help is the neighbor, who turns out to be a psychopath who is hunting the young boy. Unable to get ahold of his family, Henry sets traps for the neighbor,...

Family Visit Turns Deadly in Knuckleball [Trailer]
Writer/director Michael Peterson's feature film debut Lloyd the Conqueror made a bit of a splash in its festival run a few years ago and now the director is back with a tale which is far darker than and menacing than that film ever was: Knuckleball.

The movie stars Michael Ironside as Jacob, a grouchy granddad tasked with minding his grandson for the weekend. He's a tough Sob but he's determined to teach his grandson Henry (Luca Villacis) a few things before his parents pick him up.

When Jacob suddenly dies during the night and a snowstorm rolls into the secluded farm, Henry turns to Dixon (Munro Chambers of Turbo Kid and "Degrassi" fame), a nearby neighbour and farm hand, for help and so begins the trouble.

The...

The Trailer For Knuckleball is an R-Rated Riff on Home Alone
“To catch a predator he must think like one.”

If you’ve ever wondered what a low-budget R-rated Home Alone movie would look like, watch this new trailer for Knuckleball because that’s exactly what it is. The funny thing is, the original Home Alone films seem like they were just as violent than this R-rated riff! The violence was just done in a more comedic manner. Here’s the synopsis:

Alone, and targeted on an isolated farm, 12 year old Henry (Luca Villacis) finds himself at the center of a maelstrom of terror, and a dark family legacy, when his secretive grandfather dies suddenly in the night.

The movie could have some fun moments, but for the most part it doesn’t really look that good. I’m sure there will be some kind of twist in the story that we don’t see coming. Watch the trailer and let...
