While some movies remain popular and talked about, regardless of age, countless others have faded into the background or obscurity.

Each themed installment of this series will spotlight several overlooked, unappreciated or generally unknown movies from the past — some from way back when, and others from not so long ago — that could use some more attention.

The first edition of this column will look at horror movies featuring wintry settings. It may not feel or look like winter wherever you are right now, but somewhere it’s cold. And with a frosty backdrop, the five winter horror movies here feel more bleak than usual.

Alarm Pictures has closed North American rights from Hewes Pictures on “The Protector,” the latest film from Canadian writer-director Lenin M. Sivam, in advance of its July 28 world premiere at Montreal’s Fantasia Festival.

Exclusive: The Atx Television Festival will kick off in June with a 20th anniversary reunion panel for the cast and creators of Degrassi: The Next Generation, the popular long-running Canadian teen drama series.

Munro Chambers really impressed earlier this year with a stellar performance in the hugely entertaining Harpoon (review) so when his name appeared on the credit list of Entangled, I was instantly drawn to the movie which on closer review, sounded like it would be right up my alley.

Kirill Sokolov’s Why Don’t You Just Die! has won a hat-trick of awards at Manchester horror festival Grimmfest, including best feature.

As well as the top prize, the dark comedy won best director for Sokolov and best SFX. It also received a special mention for cinematography and in the audience award category.

The team behind the Russian feature has been awarded £80,000 worth of post-production services from M2 MediaPost, which can be used as finance against a future film production.

Prolific Canadian writer-director Rob Grant, who’s made five features and one documentary in the last decade, once again puts a limited setting and budget to resourceful use in “Harpoon.” This thriller about three none-too-loyal friends adrift on a yacht made a splash at Fantasia (after a lower-key Rotterdam premiere) with its genre-fan-friendly mix of grisly action and jaunty black comedy.

That balance was particularly successful in Grant’s 2012 “Mon Ami,” wherein two would-be kidnappers kept bungling their way to an ever-higher accidental body count. His latest is slicker but also more glibly mean-spirited, with characters it’s hard to care about and some twists that seem more contrived than clever — or credible. Nonetheless, . Writer/director Rob Grant wastes zero time getting us in the right frame of mind with Brett Gelman’s perfectly sardonic voice narrating an auspiciously violent collision of three close friends caught in a lovers’ misunderstanding. Harpoon‘s first scene provides effect—a stranded yacht in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean with “Sos” duct taped to the deck—while the second supplies cause as Jonah (Munro Chambers) gets his face punched in by best friend Richard (Christopher Gray) with the latter’s long-term partner Sasha (Emily Tyra) imploring him to stop. Move those temperamental seeds of mistrust to a boat’s tight quarters and we can guess why the vessel will eventually find itself in distress. The question then becomes which, if any, of those passengers will be alive to accept help.

It can seem monotonous, as their similarities begin to blend together, but Jovanka Vuckovic’s feature debut, Riot Girls, succeeds in separating itself from the mould, with a hard rock survival tale that feels like something The CW could produce at their full potential.

This just premiered at the Rotterdam Film Festival this year and is on the hunt for distributors at the Cannes Market, which is where this trailer comes from. Rivalries, dark secrets, and sexual tension emerge when three best friends find themselves stranded on a yacht in the middle of the ocean due to suspicious circumstances. Sounds a bit like Holiday or The Boat, but maybe not entirely. Starring Christopher Gray, Munro Chambers, and Emily Tyra. Epic Pictures has acquiring U.S. rights to Rob Grant’s horror comedy “Harpoon” for its distribution genre label Dread. The deal was announced at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

The movie stars Munro Chambers, who also appeared in Epic Pictures’ “Turbo Kid” in 2015, along with Emily Tyra (“Code Black”), and Christopher Gray (“The Mist”). “Harpoon” is a black comedy about the rivalries, dark secrets, and sexual tension that arise when three best friends find themselves stranded on a yacht in the middle of the ocean.

The film was also written by Grant and produced by Michael Peterson (“Knuckleball”), Kurtis David Harder (“What Keeps You Alive”), and Julian Black Antelope (“True Fiction”) for 775 Media Corp. It was executive produced by Laurie Venning for Venntertainment.

Arthouse sales firm Yellow Veil Pictures has picked up the international rights to dark comedy Harpoon, starring Code Black’s Emily Tyra and The Mist’s Christopher Gray, ahead of its premiere in Rotterdam.

It is the latest genre project for the company, which handles worldwide sales for films including Tillman Singer’s Luz , A.T. White’s Starfish, and Josh Lobo’s forthcoming upcoming debut A Man in the Dark.

It’s winter and a boy is unintentionally home alone, but what follows is more in the realm of mortal peril than wacky hijinks in “Knuckleball.” This admirably lean thriller, in which a 12-year-old dumped at grandpa’s during his parents’ vacation ends up fighting for life, doesn’t necessarily hold up to close scrutiny in terms of credibility. Yet while you’re watching, helmer Michael Peterson effectively earns suspension of disbelief with stark atmospherics, solid performances and a persuasive escalation of panic. The Canadian feature is opening on three U.S. screens simultaneous with its digital-formats release.

The film was directed by Michael Peterson (Lloyd the Conqueror) who co-wrote the script with Kevin Cockle.

Synopsis: Alone, and targeted on an isolated farm, 12 year old Henry finds himself at the center of a maelstrom of terror, and a dark family legacy, when his secretive grandfather dies suddenly in the night.

Henry gets dropped off at grandpa's house in the middle of nowhere in the trailer for Knuckleball. There's three rules that the 12-year old must follow: Lend a Hand, Do What He Says, and Keep Your Phone Charged, which Henry does, for the most part. One of the main points is that little Henry learns to throw a killer knuckleball from his grandfather after chopping some wood. However, things take a turn for the worse when Grandpa mysteriously passes away in his sleep. The tagline for the film reads, "To catch a predator he must think like one," which should give one a good idea of what they're in for with Knuckleball.

Since Henry's parents have left him with grandpa, his only help is the neighbor, who turns out to be a psychopath who is hunting the young boy. Unable to get ahold of his family, Henry sets traps for the neighbor,...

Writer/director Michael Peterson's feature film debut Lloyd the Conqueror made a bit of a splash in its festival run a few years ago and now the director is back with a tale which is far darker than and menacing than that film ever was: Knuckleball.

The movie stars Michael Ironside as Jacob, a grouchy granddad tasked with minding his grandson for the weekend. He's a tough Sob but he's determined to teach his grandson Henry (Luca Villacis) a few things before his parents pick him up.

When Jacob suddenly dies during the night and a snowstorm rolls into the secluded farm, Henry turns to Dixon (Munro Chambers of Turbo Kid and "Degrassi" fame), a nearby neighbour and farm hand, for help and so begins the trouble.
