"Heeh! Heeh! Heeh!" With a wheezy laugh and goofy grins, "Revenge of the Nerds" took 1984 by storm. In a theatrical year dominated by Axel Foley, Indiana Jones, Gizmo, the Ghostbusters, and Mr. Miyagi, it was a raunchy college comedy for the older kids, promoting the triumph of the intelligent and the uncool over the strong and the sexy.
Beloved at the time, it has aged poorly in some respects, as it treats sorority girls as prizes to be won, and depicts some decidedly non-consensual intimate moments exploited and played for pranks. For the sequel, which helped launch Bradley Whitford's career, the nerds' hijinks were toned down to a PG-13, and two subsequent films, made for TV, had to deal with even stricter network censorship. There's still occasional talk of a reboot at some point though.

The Karate Kid came out in 1984; sequels followed in 1986, ’89 and 1994. If you saw any of those films in theaters, you’re probably not playing Roblox. (The Karate Kid remake in 2010, with a completely new set of characters, doesn’t really apply here.) Sony and Gamefam have a game plan to get Gen Alpha to theaters for next month’s Karate Kid: Legends: teach them the ways of Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) and Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) right where they play.
Sony Pictures and Gamefam, which calls itself “the leading metaverse media company for Gen Z & Alpha communities,” have joined forces on a Karate Kid Training Simulator on Roblox, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The game launches on May 2, weeks ahead of the Karate Kid: Legends May 30 theatrical release (in the U.S. and Canada).

"Star Wars" is one of the most fleshed-out, realized worlds in all of fiction, one with a vast lore and a tactile sense of tradition and culture. There are hundreds of planets and peoples, each with a huge sense of history that the franchise (for the most part) doesn't dwell on or feel the need to stop and explain. Why is Coruscant is a single city? Who cares, it looks rad. Why can Master Rwoh use her lightsaber as a whip? Doesn't matter, shut up. And in terms of larger mysteries, there's also the mysterious Bendu from "Star Wars Rebels," as well as the Mortis gods, who are clouded in intrigue and lack any specific details.
Then there's Yoda, arguably the single most mercurial, perplexing being in the "Star Wars" galaxy. He's a fascinating character: one of only three known members of his species, he's incredibly old, and he speaks backwards for no discernible reason.

The Karate Kid franchise is back with Legends, a movie that bridges the gap between the original Miyagi-verse and the reboot series, Cobra Kai. Ralph Macchio’s Daniel Larusso and Jackie Chan’s Mr. Han have teamed up for this project, and fans are looking forward to this crossover.
But while the return of these mentors is undoubtedly thrilling, there seems to be one glaring issue that the movie might struggle to overcome. So, what exactly is holding back Karate Kid: Legends? Let’s break it down.
Jackie Chan in a still from Karate Kid: Legends | Sony Pictures Entertainment Jackie Chan’s Karate Kid: Legends lacks a compelling villain like Cobra Kai
Cobra Kai certainly spoiled us with their lineup of unforgettable antagonists like John Kreese, Terry Silver, and Kim Da-Eun. Each of them brought a ruthlessness to the dojo that might be hard to recreate for the film.

Masterful moves and memorable villains await in The Karate Kid: Street Rumble. Developed by Odaclick Game Studio, this retro-styled adventure invites players to relive the magic of Daniel Larusso’s journey through the classic All Valley Tournament storyline and beyond. Packing a dozen intricate stages inspired by the blockbuster films, it’s a nostalgia-filled trip down memory lane for fans of the underdog franchise.
Though the developers lack experience with beat ’em up titles, their passion for the source material shines through. Street Rumble adapts the movies’ most iconic scenes into a side-scrolling scrap, casting players as Daniel, Mr. Miyagi, Ali, or Kumiko to perfect their craft against a rogue’s gallery of familiar foes.
From Johnny Lawrence’s early bullying to Chozen’s ruthless revenge plot, the saga unfurls with recognizable flare. While its graphic novel cutscenes lack the films’ polish, the gameplay more than makes up for it with endearing pixel art.

The 1990s were the Golden Age of kids' sports movies, with some of the most recognizable titles originating from this defining decade. From elevated made-for-television movies to celebrated cult classics, this genre boasts a wide range of sports underdog stories. This collection of films highlights how society utilizes sports as a narrative for positive upbringing. This comes with a series of common sports movie stereotypes, as many of these movies deal with single parents, moving to a new town, or being an outcast. Despite relying on a handful of tropes, each film still maintains its unique message and humor.
The 1990s kids' sports movie is largely defined by the success of 1984s The Karate Kid. The martial arts film starring Ralph Macchio and Noriyuki Pat Morita helped create a lot of the tropes seen in later films, such as the single parent trope, the outcast coming-of-age trope, and the sports Heros Journey narrative.

2025's upcoming Karate Kid movie is giving me the incredibly unexpected chance to watch two characters face off, and I cannot wait to see if it happens. The cast of the new Karate Kid movie hasn't yet been fully confirmed, although certain actors have been announced. However, I'm sure I'm not alone in my prediction that the legacy sequel will feature not just characters from the original Karate Kid movies, but also figures from Cobra Kai. Interestingly, the fight I'm hoping for involves someone who originated in a completely different arm of the franchise.
I've seen all the Karate Kid movies, and I have to say I think Cobra Kai is better than almost all of them. That being said, I'm also aware the spinoff show wouldn't exist without the original films. So, while I hope the cast of Cobra Kai isn't swept entirely aside for 2025's Karate Kid movie,...

Ralph Macchio started his journey in the Karate Kid franchise playing teenage underdog Daniel Larusso, but both character and actor have come a long way since then. The original movie was released in 1984, and at the time, no one knew what it would grow into. The Karate Kid Part II and The Karate Kid Part III were released in the following years, and then, decades later, the spin-off series Cobra Kai brought this franchise back into the limelight. This means The Karate Kid has been a massive part of Macchio's life, and he's celebrated many birthdays on the sets of the films and Netflix series.
As a character, Daniel is the perfect underdog. Young and a little reckless, his heart of gold always winds up leading the way (with a bit of help from Mr. Miyagi). He proved himself a true hero and inspiration again and again in the Karate Kid movies,...

Cobra Kai. Ralph Macchio as Daniel Larusso in Cobra Kai. Cr. Curtis Bonds Baker/Netflix © 2024 While many people saw The Karate Kid as a typical sports movie, with the underdog triumphing against all odds, it did have some deeper undercurrents to it. One of the standout scenes in the original film focused on the tortured history of Daniel Larusso’s teacher and mentor, Mr. Miyagi, As it turns out, Miyagi was a war hero during World War II, but that didn’t keep his family out of the internment camps where many Japanese Americans were held during the height of the hostilities. Learning about Miyagi’s past stunned Larusso and served as a key moment in the characters’ relationship. Looking back on that first film at a Niagara Falls Comic Con Panel a few years back, star Ralph Macchio has vivid memories of filming that scene with Pat Morita, and...

Cobra Kai actors are significantly older than their characters, creating a growing age gap due to filming schedules and seasons. Xolo Mariduea is 6 years older than Miguel Diaz, while Tanner Buchanan is 9 years older than Robby Keene on Cobra Kai. Mary Mouser is 11 years older than Samantha Larusso, showcasing the significant age differences between actors and characters on the show.
Cobra Kai focuses on younger characters, but the ages of the actors who play them are very different in comparison, as is the case with Mary Mouser. Although the Karate Kid sequel show is about the rivalry between Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), the other primary part of the story is about a new group of teenagers. Throughout the show, viewers have watched the kids mature physically, emotionally, and mentally. However, the Cobra Kai timeline has created a growing gap between how old the characters and actors are.

Somewhat abruptly, Chozen took a step back from the story, disappearing after the ending of episode 3. Apparently, he's gone back to Okinawa to see Kumiko, leaving his role in the Sekai Taikai tournament and the wider narrative in question.
Absent in both the fourth and fifth episodes, Chozen wasn't in the company of Johnny and Daniel's Miyagi-do dojo when they arrived at the tournament in Barcelona.

The first part of the sixth and final season of Cobra Kai debuted just a few weeks ago, putting the grand finale in motion. However, even when the series does come to a close, Cobra Kai creators Hayden Schlossberg, Josh Heald and Jon Hurwitz have been entertaining the idea of more spinoffs, including a prequel series centered on Mr. Miyagi.
“I would say that we definitely want to do [a Mr. Miyagi series] and have been talking about that,” Schlossberg told THR. “But the focus has been on Cobra Kai. As we’re finishing that up, we’ll see exactly what path we take in terms of spinoffs, but it is definitely something that we’ve been wanting to do. It’s just that we want to wait until we get finished with Cobra Kai first before we get into that.” While it doesn’t sound like a Miyagi prequel is officially in the cards at the moment,...

It’s been two weeks now since fans of Netflix’s super popular series Cobra Kai have been able to watch the first part of the three-part final season (the first five episodes of season six have been viewed worldwide 24.3 million times since the July 18 release, per the streamer).
And in the five episode-premiere, it initially appeared there would be peace in The Valley of Los Angeles between Danny Larusso (Ralph Macchio), Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and the various kids of their respective karate schools. But as events and rivalries typically go in this world of high school angst with black belts, peace received a flying kick out of the dojo.
But that simply meant more thrills to come, according to Cobra Kai’s creators Hayden Schlossberg, Josh Heald and Jon Hurwitz. The Hollywood Reporter recently caught up with the trio to talk about the upcoming Part 2 (dropping Nov. 15) and...

Throughout Cobra Kai and its predecessors, The Karate Kid series, Nariyoshi Miyagi (Pat Morita) is portrayed as a gentle, wise, well-meaning mentor to Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and, by extension, his family. However, Season 6 of Cobra Kai reveals that the Mr. Miyagi audiences loved may have kept secrets from his closest confidant. Daniel, his wife Amanda (Courtney Henggeler), and Chozen (Yuji Okumoto) find a trunk of Miyagi's that contains many items from Miyagi's past, among them a newspaper clipping from 1947 that paints Miyagi in a very different light, and a bloodied headband from the Sekai Takai tournament. Tory's defection to Kreese's dojo gives Cobra Kai a huge advantage going into the Sekai Taikai tournament. Kenny's absence from the team hints at a possible defection to Cobra Kai, adding to the drama and tension. Kenny's potential inclusion could lead to a showdown with Miyagi-do fighters, shifting the odds slightly in Cobra Kai's favor.
Surprisingly, Miyagi-do may have secretly suffered two defections to Kreese's new dojo in Cobra Kai. The Cobra Kai season 6 part 1 finale marked one of the biggest betrayals in Karate Kid history when it finally sent Miyagi-do's Sekai Taikai team to the tournament. As it turns out, Kreese's overtures to Tory in the beginning of the episode were successful; following her argument with Daniel and Amanda over the fight with Sam, Tory switched sides and joined Kreese's side.
Obviously, Tory's status as Kreese's "champion" gives Martin Kove's character a huge advantage going into the Sekai Taikai tournament.

Cobra Kai season 6 has not featured any big cameos, but its subtle reference to The Next Karate Kid seemingly paves the way for Hilary Swank's appearance in its future installments. After each subsequent Karate Kid movie sequel gave diminishing returns, the franchise released a reboot titled The Next Karate Kid, starring Hilary Swank as its lead. Playing Julie Pierce, Hilary Swank portrayed a traumatized young girl in the Karate Kid movie who, like Daniel Larusso, found solace and strength through Mr. Miyagi's profound karate lessons and philosophies.

Warning! Contains spoilers for Cobra Kai season 1, part 1.
Daniel Larusso's retirement from karate in Cobra Kai season 6 sets up a major inconsistency in his character development. The new Karate Kid movie may struggle to make sense of Daniel's return after his confirmed retirement from karate. "Cobra Kai" is one of the best legacy sequels of the past decade, a show that respects and honors what came before while telling a new story that is both familiar and fresh. The series follows Johnny Lawrence and Daniel Larusso 40 years after the events of the 1984 original "Karate Kid" as they continue to struggle with how they were in high school, and the lessons their senseis imparted on them as they decide to teach karate to a new generation of kids.

It's these same rivalries that make the show, although that complicates things a little when it comes to evaluating them. Do you take these characters at their worst,...
