Netflix has returned to horror territory with the release of Fear Street: Prom Queen. The film is their fourth entry in the Fear Street film series, which is based on R.L. Stine's book series of the same name. While the latest installment of the franchise has not exactly endeared itself to critics, it has topped the Netflix chart, as you would expect. Ahead of the release of the new movie, director Matt Palmer has revealed one of his strongest inspirations for the movie. This time, we need to travel further back in time and land in 1976, when the cult horror classic Alice, Sweet Alice was released.
Palmer sat down to talk about Fear Street: Prom Queen with Bloody Disgusting. Previously, the director talked to Netflix and addressed some of his influences and he listed films like Scream, Happy Birthday to Me, and Sleepaway Camp. However, this time he addressed...

Look alive, Shadysiders! Netflix's newest slasher, Fear Street: Prom Queen, has earned the crown after just one weekend, taking top spot on the streamer's Top 10 list despite a Rotten Tomatoes score of 31%. Prom Queen marks the fourth entry in the popular Fear Street saga that began in 2021 with three movies released in quick succession, with the latest offering being a stand-alone film based on the 15th novel in R.L. Stine's young adult novel series.
Combining familiar elements from slasher films of yesteryear like Prom Night and Alice, Sweet Alice, Fear Street: Prom Queen follows prom season at Shadyside High as the school's wolfpack of It Girls is busy with its usual sweet and vicious campaigns for the crown. When a gutsy outsider (India Fowler) puts herself in the running, and the other girls start mysteriously disappearing, the class of '88 suddenly finds itself in for one hell of a prom night.

Netflix's long-awaited Fear Street: Prom Queen is among the latest horror movies to premiere in the past few weeks, being released on the streaming service on May 23, 2025. Sadly, the fourth installment in the Fear Street film series isn't garnering the positive reviews many hoped for, and has seriously failed to live up to the trilogy that so impressed genre fans and critics back in 2021.
Fear Street: Prom Queen stars India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Fina Strazza, David Iacono, Ella Rubin, Chris Klein, Ariana Greenblatt, Lili Taylor, and Katherine Waterston. It is based on the novel "The Prom Queen," written by R. L. Stine from the teenage horror fiction series "Fear Street." The plot follows a masked killer who targets candidates at Shadyside High on the night of their senior dance in 1988. Although it had the potential to be a modern prom horror hit, possibly drawing inspiration from Carrie or Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II,...

Most film critics turned their backs on “Fear Street: Prom Queen” the day it started streaming. And yet, halfway through its world premiere weekend, Netflix‘s trending teen slasher is still popular with plenty of subscribers. Co-written by director Matt Palmer and Donald McLeary, “Prom Queen” is a goofy-gory throwback about a pack of high school frenemies battling a masked killer in 1988.
A victim of the Shadyside curse series fans know all too well, Lori Granger (India Fowler) is convinced that winning the prom queen crown will clear her disgraced family name. But when the confetti flies and student blood starts to spill, our final girl becomes the epicenter for one of the worst massacres in the town’s history. Stalked by a silently snarky figure in a bright-red raincoat, queen bee Tiffany (Fina Strazza), “Carrie”-esque love interest Tyler (David Iacono), gossip Debbie (Rebecca Ablack), straight-a student Linda (Ilan O’Driscoll...

For all its stab-happy bravado and garish neon style, Fear Street: Prom Queen is less a triumphant return to Shadyside than it is a competent if derivative riff on the slashers of yesteryear. Directed by Calibre’s Matt Palmer, this latest Netflix horror outing doesn’t so much reinvent the wheel as ride it straight into a blood-soaked locker room, armed with a buzzsaw and a very ‘80s mixtape.
Set in 1988, the story centres on Lori Granger (India Fowler), a soft-spoken outsider whose tragic family history makes her the school’s resident pariah. She’s inexplicably nominated for prom queen alongside Tiffany Falconer (Fina Strazza), the leader of a snarling clique known as the Wolf Pack. When candidates start dropping like hairspray-flecked flies, suspicion, blood and body parts mount in tandem. The well-trodden path back to Shadyside, Ohio, beckons once more, this time leading us to the neon-hued anxieties of 1988 in “Fear Street: Prom Queen.” This installment positions itself as a distinct chapter within the larger Fear Street mythos, content to tell its own tale of terror. The premise is a recognizable one for aficionados of the slasher form: the seemingly innocent, if fiercely contested, race for Shadyside High’s prom queen tiara.
Yet, this being Shadyside, the path to coronation is paved not merely with social maneuvering but with a mounting body count, as a newly masked assailant begins to systematically eliminate the hopefuls. The narrative machinery cranks up around this central, sanguinary pageant.

As enamored as I was with the Goosebumps books at the public library when I was growing up, I was just as obsessed with R.L. Stine's Fear Street novels. There was something more dangerous about them, more edgy, more slasher-y. While Goosebumps sparked my imagination with frightful fun, Fear Street gave me something to look forward to fearing when I was old enough to cross the street to Shadyside.
I was fortunate to even own some Fear Street books at a young age, when an older cousin gave my family several grocery bags of books for my sister and I to enjoy. Nestled between used paperbacks of The Baby-Sitters Club and Full House stories were a stack of Stine's Fear Street titles (as well as a couple of Christopher Pike books), and ocassionally I would gaze at the eerie covers of these books, wondering what types of terror awaited me within its yellowed,...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers about “Fear Street: Prom Queen,” now streaming on Netflix.
Growing up in the U.K., “Fear Street: Prom Queen” director and co-screenwriter Matt Palmer wasn’t too familiar with R. L. Stine’s teen horror novel series that launched the Netflix film franchise. They had “Goosebumps,” Stine’s more popular series for younger readers, but “Fear Street” hadn’t made as much impact across the pond.
Luckily, Palmer was still approached to direct “Prom Queen,” the fourth chapter in the “Fear Street” film series, before producers had cemented which of the ten titles they had narrowed down to consider adapting next. This book spoke to him, even as he was well out of high school.

Ruthless yet inspired kills, expansive lore, and spirited personality made Leigh Janek’s Fear Street trilogy, based on the novels by R.L. Stine, the summer horror event of 2021. New standalone entry Fear Street: Prom Queen, nestled chronologically between Fear Street: 1978 and Fear Street: 1994, features none of that. Instead, the 1988-set slasher opts for shallow pastiche, bland kills, and a grating cast of characters. It makes for an excruciating return to the cursed town of Shadyside.

Welcome back to Shadyside! Netflix’s Fear Street franchise returns with a new standalone installment, Fear Street: Prom Night.
I spoke with director/co-writer Matt Palmer and actors India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Fina Strazza, David Iacono, Ella Rubin, Rebecca Ablack, and Ariana Greenblatt about carving out their own unique corner of the Fear Street universe with a slasher that’s set in and steeped in the 1980s.
While 2021’s Fear Street trilogy drew broad inspiration from R.L. Stine‘s ’90s teen horror novels, Prom Queen is based on a specific book in the series — 1992’s The Prom Queen — but don’t expect a straight adaptation.

The Rotten Tomatoes score for Fear Street: Prom Queen has been revealed. It's Netflix's latest foray into the Fear Street horror franchise, which began in 2021 with Fear Street Part One: 1994. Prom Queen sees director Matt Palmer take over after the previous three projects were directed by Leigh Janiak. This latest version of the slasher horror film follows the story of a high school where those competing for prom queen begin to disappear. The Fear Street: Prom Queen cast includes India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Fina Strazza, Katherine Waterston, and Chris Klein.
Now, the Rotten Tomatoes score for Fear Street: Prom Queen is a 48% Tomatometer with 23 critics' reviews so far. It does not yet have a Popcornmeter. This score is subject to some change, as the movie was just released on Netflix. If the score stands, it will be considered the lowest-scored movie in the franchise.

In 2020, with theaters struggling during Covid-19 lockdown protocols, Netflix made a genius play by acquiring Disney's Fear Street films for a triple-feature summer release. Horror fans were buzzing about Leigh Janiak's R.L. Stine adaptations, which became a minor cultural event. You'd think Netflix would ride that hype into future entries, right? Unfortunately, Matt Palmer's Fear Street: Prom Queen is slinking onto Netflix with little fanfare, as is the company's typical hushed (aka non-existent) release strategy. Even more unfortunate, Fear Street: Prom Queen is an underwhelming follow-up that lacks the presence and bite of Janiak's far superior trifecta—Fear Street by name, but unexceptional and sophomoric by comparison.

After four long years, Netflix's Fear Street series is finally back with Prom Queen, but does the new slasher measure up to the expectations set by the original trilogy? According to its Rotten Tomatoes score, not so much. The blood-soaked streets of Shadyside are calling once more. Netflix flings open the doors to a terrifyingly familiar past with the global premiere of Fear Street: Prom Queen, the latest installment in the hit horror franchise based on R.L. Stine’s chilling book series. Available for streaming now, this fourth chapter transports viewers to 1988, promising a deadly dance steeped in ’80s slasher glory and the enduring curse that haunts the ill-fated town.
The arrival of Fear Street: Prom Queen marks a significant return for the franchise, nearly four years after the innovative weekly release of the Fear Street trilogy in the summer of 2021 captivated audiences and earned critical acclaim. That trilogy masterfully wove a narrative spanning centuries, and its success clearly signaled a potent appetite for Stine’s darker, more mature brand of horror.

Can an even meaner “Carrie” actually end well for the prom queen? In Netflix’s new “Fear Street” adaptation, Matt Palmer argues yes and no with a whip-smart teen horror movie co-written by the director and Donald McLeary. An even gorier “Heathers” crowned in the pitch-black comedy era of “Bottoms,” “Fear Street: Prom Queen” is anchored in the same vicious and girly roots as the original film trilogy from 2021 — albeit missing some of the scope and style inherent to Leigh Janiak’s three-part slasher epic. Still, Palmer and McLeary’s take is giddy and gruesome, a clever next chapter with a fresh killer whose bloody raincoat isn’t the only detail to scream “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”

In the summer of 2021, Netflix unleashed the ambitious "Fear Street" trilogy with charming results. Based (loosely) on the YA horror series by "Goosebumps" maestro R.L. Stine, the three films were slasher pastiches that appealed to those of us who grew up haunting the video store horror section for "Friday the 13th" sequels and the original "Scream." Under the guidance of director Leigh Janiak, who also co-wrote the films, the three "Fear Street" films — "Fear Street: 1994," "Fear Street: 1978," and "Fear Street: 1666" spun a sprawling, detailed mythology set in the fictional, cursed town of Shadyside, where bad things happen on a regular basis.
The three films were clever, fun, and gave us a winning cast of likable characters. More than that, they left room for more. The groundwork was laid for Netflix to return to Shadyside for additional tales of YA terror. And yet, it took the streaming service...

We don’t talk enough about Leigh Janiak’s impressive “Fear Street” film trilogy, based the young adult horror novels by R.L. Stine. Four years ago Janiak unveiled, one week after another, three mostly-fantastic interconnected horror films inspired by different historical eras. The first was based on slasher movies from the 1990s. The second was based on slasher films from the 1980s. The third was based on folk horror… and also slasher movies from the 1990s. They all told a complete story with rich and fascinating characters. They were also scary as hell.
The time has come — finally! — to go back to “Fear Street,” and this time Netflix is doing something a little different. Instead of harkening back to, for example, slasher movies from the 1980s, “Fear Street: Prom Queen” harkens back to [checks notes] slasher movies from the 1980s. But wait! This time it’s prom night 1980s slasher movies. Last...

I spoke with Fear Street: Prom Queen director Matt Palmer about the look of the film’s killer, which draws inspiration from Alfred Sole‘s 1976 proto-slasher Alice, Sweet Alice.
“Alice, Sweet Alice was definite influence. There’s a chase scene in that with the killer in the raincoat. And I’m big giallo fan too, so I think there was a giallo element that I always wanted from the start,” Palmer explains to Bloody Disgusting.
“We were like, ‘What color of jacket we put against the red lockers?’ We looked at yellow, but that felt a bit too on the nose, because Alice, Sweet Alice already done that. We tried blue. And then one of our concept artists came back with red on red, which we hadn’t thought of because we were looking for something that wasn’t red, and it was like, ‘Oh, my God! That looks awesome!

One minute is all it took to get us hooked. Netflix's latest R.L. Stine flick is set for release this weekend, and you know you will want to watch. Fear Street: Prom Queen is the fourth installment of the Fear Street franchise and might be the scariest. That is based on the one minute of footage the streaming giant gave us.
Fear Street: Prom Queen takes place in 1988 and follows the ongoings of who will be prom queen in Shadyside. The It Girls think they have the situation under control, but then an outsider is nominated for queen and all heck starts breaking loose.
The It Girls start disappearing, which might make us think the outsider is behind it. But why be so obvious? Surely, that is not the case.
One minute of Fear Street: Prom Queen is enough to make you watch (and be fearful)

Are you ready for slasher season, Netflix fans? With the summer movie releases (and into October), we can expect a bunch of horror films. Some of these will be quite good, as horror is a relatively underrated genre.
Of course, it isn't for everyone. Many don't like to see gruesome murders, and that is entirely fair. Even though the filmmaking might be brilliant, it is difficult to get past all the gore. Being scary and chilling is good, but being gross to be gross is bad.
The good thing about most R.L. Stine adaptations is that they take the intentional campiness of the original material, add the gore, and give us something relatively short and entertaining. For instance, Fear Street: Prom Queen, which debuts on Netflix on Friday, May 23, is only an hour and 28 minutes long.

Even though we've barely reached the summer movie season yet, it's been another killer year for horror. Particularly for slashers. Heart Eyes has already carved up Valentine’s Day, but later this month, Fear Street: Prom Queen will turn the end of the school year blood-red. The R.L. Stine Netflix film is returning genre fans to the cursed town of Shadyside. Now, the film is paying tribute to high school slashers' past with some new deadly posters.
The two new Prom Queen posters honor 1976’s Brian De Palma adaptation of Carrie and 1980’s Prom Night, the latter of which starred horror icon Jamie Lee Curtis. The Carrie-inspired poster mirrors the two-image classic design, showing the before and bloody aftermath of star India Fowler at Shadyside’s Prom. The tagline, “If You're Hungry For Horror… Come To Shadyside’s Senior Prom” is also very similar to Carrie’s chilling warning. Finally,...

Netflix is heading back to Shadyside this month with Fear Street: Prom Queen, the latest entry in the horror franchise adapted from R.L. Stine’s teen slasher series. The new instalment arrives on 23 May, accompanied by a trailer that blends neon-drenched nostalgia with a growing body count, as prom night turns deadly once again.
Set in 1988, Prom Queen unfolds at Shadyside High, where the annual prom is less about corsages and more about survival. A clique of status-obsessed popular girls is preparing for the big night when an unexpected rival enters the race for the crown. But as the competition heats up, candidates begin to vanish, and it becomes clear that someone is willing to kill for the crown.

Prom night is supposed to be unforgettable … right? Your high school gymnasium is all decked out with colorful streamers and sparkling lights. Mirror balls, paper crowns, nervous smiles… all for a perfect night when the promise of a bright tomorrow lingers above slow dancers like machine-made fog.
But for the characters in Netflix’s latest horror event, prom is certainly a night that’ll never be forgotten … but for all the wrong reasons. In Fear Street: Prom Queen, the new viciously fun slasher installment of R.L. Stine’s beloved universe, the evening ends in carnage, and a high school gym is decorated with viscera instead of balloons.
I guess the old adage is true: evil does love to party.

Horror fans have been missing a straight-up '80s slasher, and Netflix is here to deliver. When the hit Fear Street trilogy, based on R.L. Stine's young adult horror series of the same name, concluded in 2021, horror fans were left wondering if they'd ever see the whimsical yet terrifying work of Stine on screen again. The three films starring Kiana Madeira and Stranger Things' Sadie Sink were each massive hits, so, of course, Netflix couldn't leave Fear Street behind and began working on the upcoming film Prom Queen, which is releasing just in time for prom season on May 23. After a couple of tantalizing promo images and a promising R rating announcement, the first trailer for the return to Shadyside is here and, boy, does it deliver.
The premise is straightforward and classically Stine: Prom Queen candidates go missing leading up to the big night. However, this is no young adult scary movie,...
