However, the film struggled at the box office, seemingly halting talks on future entries in the franchise. Despite underperforming at the box office, Furiosa director George Miller maintains that he has more stories to tell in the Mad Max universe, but it might be awhile before he gets to it.

The 30th annual Critics Choice Awards took place on Friday, February 7, at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. Three films—Wicked, Emilia Pérez, and The Substance—each won three awards. However, none of them claimed the top honor of Best Picture, which went to Anora. Interestingly, Anora didn’t win in any other category that night.

Jon M. Chu, director of Wicked, won Best Director, making him only the third filmmaker to win the award for a musical. The others were Baz Luhrmann for Moulin Rouge! and Damien Chazelle for La La Land. Chazelle later won an Oscar for directing La La Land, but Luhrmann and Chu didn’t even receive Oscar nominations for their films. Wicked also took home awards for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design.

Emilia Pérez won Best Foreign Language Film, Best Original Song for “El Mal”, and Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña.

Wicked and Conclave went into the 2025 Critics Choice Awards with the most nominations, but voters (myself included) spread the wealth around, showering Wicked, Conclave, The Brutalist, Anora, The Substance (congrats Demi Moore!), and Emilia Perez with film awards. On the TV drama side, Shogun earned Best Drama, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress awards. Hacks cleaned up in the TV comedy categories, scoring Best Comedy, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress.

The Critics Choice Awards were held on February 7, 2025 with Chelsea Handler returning as host for the third time. Handler spent time during the opening of her monologue to thank first responders for their incredible work during the Los Angeles wildfires. She also thanked Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni for providing a distraction from waking up every day not knowing what news will disappoint or horrify us.

Critics Choice Awards 2025: The award season continues with another much-coveted award night. It is the 30th Annual Critics Choice Awards, where both films and television artists are awarded. After two separate delays due to the Los Angeles wildfires, the 2025 Critics Choice Awards have all finally been handed out. The winners list provides another indicator of the strength of several films leading into the Academy Awards March 2, though TV plays a big role in the Critics Choice Awards as well — even if many of the top contenders on that side of the event, such as “Shogun,” which led the TV awards with four wins, are not eligible for this September’s Emmys having already stormed last year’s Emmys.

Like it or not, AI is here to stay, but Hollywood is still struggling with how to use the technology. Over the last year, we’ve witnessed a handful of AI controversies, and according to Variety, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is now considering requiring films to disclose any use of AI for the 2026 Oscars.

Some of the year’s most-nominated films, including The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, and Emilia Pérez, have all used AI in some fashion. While the Academy has an optional disclosure form for AI use, it could be made mandatory by the next ceremony. We’ll find out for sure in April when the new rules are published.

The use of AI in best picture contender “The Brutalist” recently grabbed headlines and ignited controversy, but it isn’t the only Oscar contender to use the advancing technology. High-profile films such as “A Complete Unknown,” “Dune: Part 2” and “Emilia Pérez” have also used AI in large or small ways, and the growing popularity has led the Motion Picture Academy to actively explore changing its Oscar submission requirements so that films would have to disclose their use of AI, Variety has learned.

The Academy currently offers an optional disclosure form for AI use, but Governors and Branch executive committees are now investigating how AI is used in each branch with an eye toward making disclosure mandatory in the 2026 Oscars rules, which are expected to be published in April. The Academy’s SciTech Council is working on recommended language, Variety has also learned.

According to the official Gold Derby odds, which are based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby experts, editors, and users, the epic drama about a Holocaust survivor’s struggles in America will claim Best Picture, Best Director (Brady Corbet), Best Actor (Adrien Brody), and Best Cinematography.

The Critics Choice Awards are decided by the Critics Choice Association, which comprises more than 580 broadcast, radio, and online critics and entertainment journalists. The voting body has little overlap with the Motion Picture Academy that decides the Oscars, which may be why they’ve disagreed with the Best Picture Oscar winner half the time in recent years. I should probably stop being surprised that the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has become so successful, especially after the third film has pushed the series over the billion-dollar mark. Paramount is keen to keep the little blue speedster and his pals around a little longer, as they’ve officially slated Sonic the Hedgehog 4 for a March 19, 2027 release.

The post-credit scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 did give fans a hint as to where the franchise will go next, but the fourth installment is still in the early stages with no director or star attachments at the moment. Jeff Fowler helmed the first three movies, so it stands to reason that he’ll be back for Sonic 4, but you never know.

Jim Carrey, who plays Dr. Ivo Robotnik in the franchise, has even expressed a willingness to return for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 if they have a good reason to do it.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has been widely hailed as the best instalment in the trilogy, though some newly revealed concept art hints at a movie that's arguably even grander in scale than the one fans watched in theaters last month.

There are lots of sequences showcased here that either weren't in the final cut or changed significantly. Why? Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, VFX supervisor Andrew Jackson discussed the process of retooling Mad Max: Fury Road images for Furiosa's setpieces, including environments briefly seen in Fury Road. "We were rebuilding worlds using that photographic material. We didn’t reuse CG assets from the previous film, so everything was rebuilt, including the Citadel. That was the one thing we might have been able to reuse, but we couldn't access those files," he explained.

The speedy blue hedgehog returns for a third instalment in Sega’s Sonic franchise, based on the popular video game series. This time round, the film is actually an improvement on the previous two movies, thanks to a couple of key factors, namely Jim Carrey pulling double duty and an inspired voice performance from Keanu Reeves.

As teased in the previous movie’s post-credits scene, the villain this time round is Shadow (Reeves), a red and black space hedgehog who closely resembles our spiny hero, and is out for revenge, following a traumatic event in his past. Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 raced to a franchise-best $6.5 million in Thursday previews, followed by Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King with $3.3 million.

The Sonic threequel is widely expected to top the weekend with a three-day launch of $60 million to $70 million, if not more. The second Sonic grossed $5 million in previews on its way to a $72.1 million opening. That film, however, opened in March. The Christmas holidays are a far different proposition.

As audiences across the globe race to theaters to check out the Blue Blur's third adventure, Paramount Pictures is moving forward with a fourth installment, titled Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and have already slated it for an early 2027 release. 

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 features two post-credit sequences, both of which set up future stories, so this announcement was more of an inevitability than not, but it's certainly nice of the studio to make it official before the latest film's launch. 

Early tracking buzz is projecting an opening in the $55 million to $60 million range for the Jeff Fowler-directed threequel, which likely means it will top the weekend box office, swiping the crown from Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King.

For Jeff Fowler, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is the fullest of full circles.

Before he transitioned to feature directing, Fowler worked as an animator at Tim Miller’s Blur Studio for many years, helping craft multiple high-res cut scenes for various Sonic the Hedgehog video games. Most notably, he contributed to Sega’s multi-platform spinoff game, Shadow the Hedgehog (2005), and when he eventually had the chance to tease a character in the mid-credits of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), he jumped at the chance to welcome the “little badass” to the big screen. Given that the character is a darker version of Sonic — a hedgehog who’s driven by a wide-ranging revenge campaign — Mr. John Wick himself, Keanu Reeves, slid seamlessly into the role.

Krysten Ritter is currently making the promotional rounds for the upcoming anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 3. She joins the series as a new cast member, along with James Wolk, Sofia Pernas, Cristo Fernández, and Jorma Taccone, as well as Alyla Browne, who is said to be playing Maria. The reactions to this new entry are generally positive, with one reviewer exclaiming, “Legendary!! Keanu’s Shadow is Perfect. Fun & Bombastic adventure with emotional stakes. Balances humor with such gravitas. Also thrilling action that edges your hog. Not just another sequel, it’s the Best Sonic film ever!“

Ritter was also part of the Marvel family at one point, as she starred as Jessica Jones in the Netflix series of the same name. According to Deadline, Brad Winderbaum, who is the Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation at Marvel Studios, had made comments at the D23 Brazil Expo that he wants Jessica Jones to return.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 races into theaters later this week but footage and descriptions of the threequel's post-credits scene are already doing the rounds on social media platforms like X, Reddit, and TikTok.

How? We can't imagine a critic has been blatant enough to record these scenes, so this is likely a "reap what you sow" situation for Paramount Pictures after inviting influencers and YouTubers to early screenings.

Carrey reprises his role as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 only two years after he said he was retiring.
