Casting director Alan Scott Neal makes his feature-length debut with “Last Straw (2024),” a chilling slasher that is too high on its own supply. So much so that despite clear signs of brilliance simmering down the surface, you get a distant, often flat-out uninteresting genre exercise that doesn’t know what to do with its gore-filled premise. The result is a disappointing thriller that is too eager to please but never knows what buttons to push and when to move them.

The story follows Nancy (Jessica Belkin), a young, pretty girl who finds out that she is pregnant. From the offset, we are introduced to her as someone who doesn’t care what her life is all about or what she is going to do with the baby that is now growing in her belly. She casually talks about the pregnancy to her best friend Tabitha (Tara Raani), discussing who could possibly be the father.

Jessica Belkin (Pretty Little Liars) plays a small-town gal on the edge in Last Straw, filmmaker Alan Scott Neals edgy debut horror thriller. Expect plenty of blood and several jaw-dropping twists as Belkins desperate character, Nancy, hangs on for dear life after a group of masked assailants make a surprise visit while shes working the night shift at a rural diner. Paramount+ has released the trailer for the final season of “Star Trek: Discovery,” debuting April 4 with the first two episodes.

It’s not the small town diner setting that makes Last Straw – the feature directorial debut by Alan Scott Neal – stand out, though it does give it a fresh angle for its home invasion thrills. It’s the unique narrative structure that not only leans into the prevalent feeling of rage but reframes the visceral violence that ensues. While Last Straw ultimately fails to stick to the landing, the commitment to escalating the tension and violence through rage-fueled characters fascinates all the same.

Twenty-year-old Nancy (Jessica Belkin) feels trapped and fed up with her life. Stuck in a transitionary period post-high school, Nancy tries and fails to care for her dead mother’s beloved car and hangs out with her still-in-high-school best pal Tabitha (Tara Raani). Nancy also happens to be bitter about an unwanted pregnancy, which compounds her frustrations with working at her dad’s (Jeremy Sisto) diner as a waitress-turned-manager.

Grown-ish is the spin-off series of Black-ish that follows the Johnson children as they navigate college life, with the focus shifting from Zoey to Junior in the upcoming season. In the midseason finale, Aaron, played by Trevor Jackson, suffers a major injury. But his girlfriend, Edie (Kelly Rowland), seems more concerned about missing her class. Through Grown-ish, fans have witnessed the Johnson kids' journey from immature children to independent adults, with each of them facing setbacks but ultimately finding their paths.

The two-parter sixth season picks up right where season 5 left off, welcoming back franchise star Marcus Scribner as he reprises his role as Andre Johnson Jr. (aka Junior) for the final time. Kelly Rowland will portray Edie, a tenured professor who serves as the head of the psychology department at Cal U. Latto will portray Sloane, a wine rep who counts Doug as a client. Omarion will portray himself. Nle Choppa will portray himself. They join previously announced guest stars Lil Yachty, and Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals.

“Cruel Summer” and “Grown-ish” return to Freeform as part of their summer roster along with a brand-new animated comedy series “Praise Petey,” the network announced Monday. “Cruel Summer” returns with Season 2 and “Grown-ish” will be kicking off its sixth and final season with a two-part release.

The first half of “Grown-ish” Season 6 premieres June 28 and features Justine Skye and Tara Raani as returning series regulars. This season follows Annika (Skye), a sharp and funny aspiring media star who picks a college that best fits her personal brand. “Raani plays Zaara, a first generation Indian American whose fearlessness inspires Junior as his best friend and go-to shoulder to lean on,” says the official show synopsis.

Freeform has set its summer slate premiere dates, with the sophomore installment of the anthology series “Cruel Summer” and the sixth and final season of “Grown-ish” eyeing June debuts.

“Cruel Summer” Season 2, which stars Sadie Stanley, Lexi Underwood and Griffin Gluck, will launch Monday, June 5 at 9 p.m. Et with a special two-episode premiere and subsequent episodes premiering during at 10 p.m.

The final chapter of “Grown-ish,” which follows Andre Johnson Jr. (Marcus Scribner) as he makes a name for himself on campus and overcomes Zoey’s (Yara Shahidi) overshadowing presence, premieres the first half of the season on Wednesday, June 28, at 10 p.m. Et. Freeform is kicking off its summer slate with the return of its hit series Cruel Summer and the final season of grown-ish.

The second season of Cruel Summer will debut on June 5 with a special two-episode premiere, the network announced Monday. The premiere episodes will air at 9 p.m. Et/Pt, before the show transitions to its normal timeslot at 10 p.m.

Set in an idyllic waterfront town in the Pacific Northwest, the next chapter of Cruel Summer follows the rise and fall of an intense teenage friendship. Approaching the story from three different timelines surrounding Y2K, the season twists and turns as it tracks the early friendship between Megan, Isabella and Megan’s best friend Luke, the love triangle that blossomed, and the mystery that would impact all of their lives going forward.

This is not a happy hump day for Zoey Johnson. Freeform on Wednesday released the trailer for grown-ish‘s upcoming fifth season, which welcomes Junior (black-ish‘s Marcus Scribner) to Cal U as a full-time student — and a full-time problem for Zoey.

Let’s just cut right to it: The trailer’s 40-second mark finds Zoey walking in on Junior going to pound town with Luca’s younger sister Kiela (Daniella Perkins), and her reaction is pretty spot-on for someone who just witnessed their younger brother doing their ex-boyfriend’s sister against a bathroom sink.

Daniella Perkins, who recurred as the character in Season 4, has been promoted to series regular for the upcoming fifth season. Additionally, Matthew Sato (Doogie Kamealoha M.D.), Tara Raani, Justine Skye (Already Gone), Amelie Zilber, Ceyair Wright (Space Jam: A New Legacy) and Slick Woods have joined the cast in recurring roles in the series starring Yara Shahidi.

HBO Max on Tuesday released the official trailer for “Rap Sh!t,” an original comedy series from from Emmy nominee Issa Rae (“Insecure”). The series premiere on July 21 with two episodes at 6 p.m. Pt/9 p.m. Et. The eight-episode season continues with one episode weekly until September 1.

The series follows two estranged high school friends from Miami, Shawna (Aida Osman) and Mia (KaMillion). The two reunite to form a rap group, forming a new bond along the way. The series also stars Jonica Booth, Devon Terrell and Rj Cyler.

“Rap Sh!t” is executive produced by Issa Rae and showrunner Syreeta Singleton, in addition to Montrel McKay for Hoorae, Jonathan Berry and Dave Becky for 3 Arts Entertainment and Deniese Davis. Rae also wrote the pilot episode and co-wrote the finale episode with Singleton.
