REinvent Takes World Sales to Karin af Klintberg’s Royal Docu ‘The King,’ Premiering at Göteborg (Exclusive)

GÖTEBORG, Sweden — On Saturday night, audiences at the Göteborg Film Festival, the largest movie-tv event in Scandinavia, were privy to the world premiere of “The King,” a documentary by Swedish journalist Karin af Klintberg for which she was given unprecedented access to follow Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf for two years.

REinvent International Sales has taken on world rights to the film which will be released in Sweden next month. Sf Studios is co-producing and will be distributing in the Nordics.

“The King” is produced by Stina Gardell and Petra Måhl for Af Nexiko, in co-production with Sf Studios, the Swedish Film Institute and public broadcast network Svt.

It wasn’t an easy journey for af Klintberg who was told by the King’s team that, as she had spent close to two hours doing small chat with him, when she first met him, it was a yes.

Goteborg will screen nearly 250 films in 700 screenings, making it the largest film festival in Scandinavia.

The 46th Goteborg Film Festival (Jan 27-Feb 5) will kick off with the world premiere of Exodus, directed by Abbe Hassan, about a smuggler who tries to save a Syrian girl; the closing film will be Camino, directed by Birgitte Stærmose, about a 30-year-old woman on a long hike with her father to honour her mother’s last wish.

Goteborg will screen nearly 250 films in 700 screenings, making it the largest film festival in Scandinavia.

The Göteborg Film Festival has unveiled the competition titles selected for its 46th edition, which runs from January 27 – February 5. (Scroll down for the full list).

Göteborg is split into four competition strands. The main strand is the Nordic Competition, which features nine films from the Nordic region. The competition’s winner takes home the Dragon Award and a Sek 400 000 cash prize. The rest of the festival comprises the Nordic Documentary Competition, the Ingmar Bergman Competition for first-time filmmakers, and the International Competition.

Among the Nordic highlights is Swedish filmmaker Isabella Carbonell’s thriller Dogborn, starring Swedish rap star Silvana Imam. The pic debuted at Venice last year and follows two homeless twins and their struggle to survive. Hlynur Pálmason’s well-received period piece Godland also screens in competition. Sf Studios has launched The King in Cannes - a feature documentary about Swedish monarch Carl XVI Gustaf, that will debut in cinemas in the 50th year of his reign in 2023.

The film is currently in production, directed by Karin af Klintberg; and produced by Stina Gardell and Petra Mahl for Sweden’s Af Nexiko, in co-production with Sf Studios, with backing from the Swedish Film Institute and Svt.

Sf Studios will release the film in Nordic territories in February 2023.

Karin af Klintberg is set to direct “The King,” a documentary about the Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf, which Sf Studios is co-producing and will be distributing in the Nordics.

Af Klintberg is the first journalist to have been granted unique access to follow the King and has been following him through his private and professional life. It’s also the first time that a documentary has been produced about a Swedish king while he is still alive.

The film is produced by Stina Gardell and Petra Måhl for Af Nexiko Ab, in co-production with Sf Studios, the Swedish Film Institute and Svt. Sf Studios handles Nordic distribution.

“The King” is set to premiere in Swedish theaters in February 2023 to mark the 50th anniversary of King Carl XVI Gustaf’s ascendance to the throne which makes him the longest-serving regent in Swedish history.

'Mustang', 'Nice People' among Filmfest Hamburg winners

Festival favourite Mustang took the festival’s art cinema prize, while documentary Nice People won the audience award.

Festival favourite Mustang and the documentary feature Nice People were among the prize-winners at this year’s Filmfest Hamburg (October 1-10) which came to a close at the weekend with an awards ceremony before the German premiere of the Iranian film Paradise.

Turkish director Denize Gamze Ergüven’s debut Mustang – which premiered in Cannes this year - won the Cicae Art Cinema Award, including prize-money of $5,700 (€5,000) towards the promotion of the film’s German theatrical release next spring by Michael Kölmel’s Leipzig-based Weltkino Filmverleih.

Neue Mediopolis Filmproduktion’s Alexander Ris and Jörg Rothe, the producer of Romanian director Radu Muntean’s One Floor Below, received the $28,400 (€25,000) Hamburg Producer Prize for European Cinema Co-Productions, while Romanian partner - Multimedia East - was awarded $17,000 (€15,000) worth of cinema grading by the Hamburg-based postproduction house.

Danish drama Key House Mirror, directed by Michael Noer (R), will open the 2015 edition of the Göteborg Film Festival (Jan 23 - Feb 2).

Ghita Nørby and Sven Wollter play the lead roles in the drama about an elderly woman who strikes up an unexpected relationship with a fellow care-home resident.

Jorn Donner’s docu-biopic of Finnish designer Armi Ranta, Armi Alive!, will close the festival.

Eight Nordic films will compete for the $125,000 Nordic prize with this year’s jury comprising directors Pernille Fischer Christensen, Pirjo Honkasalo, Anja Breienand Benedikt Erlingsson, as well as actress Maryam Moghaddam.
