How Netflix's Carry-On Helped Pave The Way For Blumhouse's New Horror Movie
Image
If you watch movies and are subscribed to Netflix, there's a decent chance you watched the thriller "Carry-On" at some point in the last few months. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, known for his Liam Neeson action joints such as "Non-Stop" and "The Commuter," it quickly rocketed up the streamer's charts, becoming a smash hit. It also, somewhat indirectly, paved the way for his new film.

After directing horror films like "Orphan" and "House of Wax" earlier in his career, Collet-Serra is returning to the genre with Blumhouse's "The Woman in the Yard." The film, which has largely been shrouded in mystery, represents the director's first horror effort since 2016's "The Shallows." Taking that journey with him is Danielle Deadwyler, whom he collaborated with on "Carry-On" as Elena Cole, the agent trying to get to the bottom of the plot hatched by Jason Bateman's mysterious traveler.

"That's my guy," Deadwyler...

'Carry On' Director Jaume Collet-Serra Directing Survival Thriller 'Play Dead'
Image
Jaume Collet-Serra hit the gold mine when he directed Netflix's recent Christmas action flick, Carry On, which starred Taron Egerton as a Tsa agent blackmailed by a group of international terrorists on Christmas Eve. Carry On was a major success for Netflix, breaking into the streamer's Top 5 most watched movies of all-time list. Collet-Serrra is now back to hopefully make lightning strike twice with a new horror/thriller that has been described as a blend between Don't Breathe and 1917.

Per Deadline, Jaume Collet-Serra is set to direct Play Dead, a new original survival thriller. The script is being penned by Peter Stanley-Ward and Natalie Conway. Very little is known about Play Dead, other than its two main inspirations, which came from one of Deadline's sources. Don't Breathe and 1917 couldn't be further apart in terms genre. The former, directed by Alien: Romulus' Fede Álvarez, was a horror/thriller...

Red Ribbons and a Wild Car Fight: How Viral Social Media Moments Elevated ‘Carry-On’ to Netflix Royalty
Image
Just two months ago, a red ribbon tied to a piece of luggage only meant one thing: your bag wouldn’t get lost in the sea of identical suitcases at baggage claim. That was a simpler time.

Thanks to “Carry-On,” Netflix’s high-octane Christmas Eve thriller starring Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman, a simple ribbon has taken on an entirely new meaning. In the movie directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Egerton plays Ethan Kopek, a Tsa agent blackmailed by a ruthless bioterrorist into allowing his red-ribboned carry-on containing a lethal nerve agent to pass through the airport security checkpoint.

The first film out of Netflix’s creative partnership with Amblin was an instant hit for the streamer upon its release on Dec. 13, and has since become its third most-watched film ever (“Red Notice” and “Don’t Look Up” currently hold the top two spots).

While its compelling premise and prominent placement on...

Carry-On 2 Gets Disappointing Update From Director Despite Landing On Netflix's All-Time Viewership Record
Image
Carry-On, a high-stakes thriller starring Taron Egerton and directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, gets a disappointing sequel update. The Netflix movie follows Ethan, a Tsa Agent at Lax (Egerton) who is blackmailed by a mysterious traveler (Jason Bateman) into allowing a dangerous package onto a Christmas Eve flight. The film was a quick success, becoming Netflix's biggest opening of 2024, with 42 million views in its first week. Carry-On also earned positive reviews and an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes. After a long period on the streaming charts, the film cracked the coveted viewership list, becoming Netflix's fifth most-viewed movie of all time.

In a recent interview with Variety, Collet-Serra and producer Dylan Clark spoke about the film's success and the possibility of a sequel. Although the director revealed that there are no current plans for a continuation, the pair didn't completely rule out the chance of revisiting the Carry-On universe. Check out their...

'Carry-On' Gets Sequel Update After Breaking Huge Netflix Record
Image
Following its record viewership, the latest Netflix action movie, Carry-On, gets a sequel update from director Jaume Collet-Serra. Though it may not be what fans want to hear. Speaking with Variety amid the news that Carry-On is now the fifth most popular English-language Netflix movie after scoring a total of 149.5 million views since debuting last month, Collet-Serra has revealed that, for now, at least, there are no formal talks regarding a Carry-On 2.

However, while nothing is officially on the board right now, the filmmaker does have some ideas regarding what a follow-up would include. Stating that he would return if that’s what audiences want, the director revealed that a potential Carry-On 2 could leave Taron Egerton’s Tsa agent Ethan Kopek behind and instead follow Danielle Deadwyler’s LAPD detective Elena Cole.

“We don’t have any plans for a sequel. But if audiences wanted a sequel, families wanted a...

Jason Bateman and Taron Egerton in Carry-On (2024)
Carry-On is now Netflix’s fifth most-watched film of all time
Jason Bateman and Taron Egerton in Carry-On (2024)
Madcap airport thriller Carry-On has proved to be a ratings success for Netflix, and now ranks fifth on its top 10 list of most-watched films.

Cannily timed to coincide with the festive break, Netflix thriller Carry-On is now one of the streaming giant’s most-watched movies. According to the firm’s own numbers, the airport-set nail-biter has notched up 149m views – meaning it currently occupies the fifth position on its top 10 list of most-viewed movies ever.

This means that Carry-On, starring Taron Egerton and directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, has joined such esteemed company as action comedy romp Red Notice (in the number one spot with 230.9m views) and Sandra Bullock sci-fi horror Bird Box (157.4m).

As pointed out by Indiewire, Carry-On's success means that the starry murder mystery Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story has been edged off the list. Director Rian Johnson is probably calling his local hitman as we type this.

‘Carry-On’ Enters Netflix’s Top 5 Most-Viewed Movies of All Time; Director Jaume Collet-Serra Says No Sequel Talks Yet
Image
“Carry-On” has entered Netflix’s most popular English-language films list.

The action thriller reached the fifth spot Tuesday with 149.5 million views since its release a month ago, according to the streamer. “Red Notice” is currently No. 1 on the list, followed by “Don’t Look Up,” “The Adam Project,” “Bird Box” and “Carry-On.”

“More than the numbers, it’s seeing people’s reactions to the movie,” director Jaume Collet-Serra told me Tuesday morning. “I started getting a lot of calls and texts from friends and people who didn’t know I directed it. They didn’t know until they saw the credits and they were sending me texts that they loved it. I think at that moment I knew the movie was finding an audience and connecting to it.”

Carry-On's Ending Has A Wild Callback To Burt Lancaster's 54-Year-Old Disaster Movie That Got 3 Sequels
Image
Carry-On is being called the new Die Hard, but the Netflix film is more similar to a movie from the 1970s, which it references during its ending. The 2024 action thriller, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by T.J. Fixman, follows Taron Egerton's Ethan Kopek, a Tsa officer who gets blackmailed at Lax on Christmas Eve. After learning his girlfriend, Nora, is pregnant, Ethan aims to get a promotion. His boss gives him a test run by assigning him to manage a baggage-scanning lane, which, unfortunately, results in Ethan getting mixed up in a terrorist plot.

According to Deadline, Carry-On amassed 97 million views in its first ten days on Netflix, making it the biggest movie launch of 2024 for the streaming service and putting it on track to break into Netflix's top ten films of all time.

The success of the villains' plans in Carry-On is dependent on Ethan letting a...

Carry-On's Wild Car Crash Scene Completely Changes The Movie For The Better
Image
The car crash scene halfway through Carry-On completely changes the tone of the movie. Carry-On is an action thriller movie directed by Jaume Collet-Serra which debuted on Netflix in December 2024. The story of Carry-On follows Ethan, an airline security guard who is blackmailed by an unknown man into letting a suitcase containing a dangerous weapon pass through security unchecked. While Ethan talks to the mysterious traveler about the suitcase at the airport, LAPD detective Elena Cole pursues her suspicion that someone is transporting Novichok in Carry-On, which is a deadly nerve agent.

The cast of Carry-On includes Taron Egerton, Jason Bateman, Sofia Carson, Danielle Deadwyler, Theo Rossi, and Logan Marshall-Green. Carry-On's Divided Rotten Tomatoes Scores Explained: Why It's Fresh With Critics But Rotten With Audiences
Image
Netflix's Carry-On has been shockingly divisive in the days following its premiere, as most critics seemingly enjoyed the movie, while audiences have (ironically) been more critical of it. The action thriller, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by T.J. Fixman, follows Taron Egerton's Ethan Kopek, a Tsa officer working on Christmas Eve at Lax. When he pushes for a promotion (aka supervising a baggage-scanning lane), Ethan is unwillingly thrust into a terrorist plot. Jason Bateman plays the villain in Carry-On, who blackmails Ethan into letting a mysterious bag go through the scanner without raising any red flags.

After the release of Carry-On, rumblings about a potential sequel began spreading, and Taron Edgerton told Today that he would be on board for a second movie, as long as it has a "really innovative, creative idea."

As Carry-On continues, Ethan unravels more details about Bateman's character's plans and attempts to be the hero.

Carry-On: The Villains’ Plan, Members & What They Actually Wanted Explained
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Carry-On!

Netflix's Carry-On features a massive criminal conspiracy that involves all kinds of players, so here's what the villains' plan was, who the members of the group were, and what they actually wanted, explained. Netflix has released a lot of crime thrillers throughout the years, but what makes Carry-On unique is its Christmas setting, with the movie being part of a niche genre that was created by the Die Hard movies. Like other films in the genre, Carry-On's story is motivated by a group of terrorists with mysterious motives, with their true plans not getting revealed until the end of the film.

2024's Carry-On stars Taron Egerton as Ethan Kopek, a low-level Tsa agent who is given a shot at a promotion to work on the security line. On his first day, however, Ethan is contacted by Jason Bateman's criminal villain,...

Carry-On (2024) Movie Ending Explained: How Does Ethan Outsmart the Traveller?
Jaume Collet-Serra
Spanish-American filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra returns to his genre roots with “Carry-On” (2024), essentially creating an airport thriller set around Christmas Eve in the vein of “Die Hard 2,” with shades of “Phone Booth” thrown in for good measure. Unlike his usual collaborations with Liam Neeson in these moderately-budgeted action films with Hitchcockian bents, Serra chooses Taron Egerton as the lead here, and in the process re-introduces Egerton to the zeitgeist of the Netflix Original Movies, albeit with better filmmaking prowess.

Carry-On (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis Who is Ethan Kopek?

Serving as the cold open for the movie, the opening sequence shows a man in shadows, wearing a cap and a black jacket, accepting the delivery of a mysterious package, before killing both the Russian dealer and his nephew for asking double the amount agreed upon. The mysterious introduction of the antagonist counters the much subtle introduction to our protagonist, Ethan Kopek...

You can’t swing a Christmas tree at the moment without crashing into one of the many dubious seasonal offerings festooned across the Netflix front page like so much cheap tinsel. Between sexy snowmen (Hot Frosty), Christmas strippers (The Merry Gentlemen), a ticket tout romance (Meet Me Next Christmas) and the latest evolution of the Lohanaissance (Our Little Secret), there’s enough shoddy yuletide fare to make even the holly jolliest of Christmas lovers want to garrotte an elf with some fairy lights.

However, amidst all the saccharine schmaltz and candy cane cliche, the streamer has also slipped a surprise treat into our stockings in the form of this unexpectedly watchable airport thriller. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who pioneered an entire sub-genre in which Liam Neeson murders people on assorted modes of public transport, Carry-On sets out its stall on a busy Christmas Eve at Lax. Carry-On Soundtrack: Every Song In The Movie
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Carry-On!

Netflix's Carry-On is finally here, and here is a full breakdown of the film's soundtrack and every song that appears. Netflix's Carry-On is a new crime thriller starring Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman, with the tense film coming from The Shallows director Jaume Collet-Serra. Despite the film's high stakes and serious tone, Carry-On is also a Christmas movie, with it featuring trees, snow, lights, and many other pieces of Christmas iconography. Like any good Christmas movie, Carry-On also features a lot of Christmas music, with plenty of iconic holiday songs making their way into the film.

2024's Carry-On follows Taron Egerton's Ethan Kopek, a Tsa agent who gets the opportunity to finally monitor the bag check at the airport ahead of Christmas Day. Unfortunately, this is also the day that Jason Bateman's mysterious villain (known only as the Traveler) appears, with him telling...

‘Carry-On’ Review: It’s Taron Egerton vs. Jason Bateman in a Suspenseful Netflix Thriller
Image
The first thing in my mind upon streaming Netflix’s Carry-On is its airport premise takes place on a Christmas holiday, which instantly reminds me of Die Hard 2. While the latter is more of a high-stakes action thriller filled with bigger action, explosions and stunts, genre specialist Jaume Collet-Serra isn’t here to replicate the go-big-or-go-home thrills of Renny Harlin’s 1990 blockbuster. Instead, he prefers a low-key approach, relying more on building up the tension and suspense than going all-out.

The story goes like this: A young and lowly Tsa officer Ethan Kopek (Taron Egerton) working at Lax. He recently learns his girlfriend Nora (a stunning Sofia Carson), who also works in the same airport but as a manager for the airport operations, is pregnant. The news somehow leaves him with a mixed feeling and not to mention his seemingly dead-end job at Lax remains stagnant for so long.

If You Love Die Hard, Check Out Taron Egerton's New Christmas Action Movie Now Streaming On Netflix
Image
One of the biggest cinematic disputes is over whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie or not; well, be prepared to add another film to that argument, as Netflix released a similar one in December 2024. John McTiernan's 1988 action movie follows Bruce Willis' John McClane, a detective who gets trapped inside a skyscraper on Christmas Eve when terrorists take over. Since its release, many have insisted that Die Hard is a Christmas film based on its setting and timeline. Meanwhile, others have rebutted that sentiment.

Die Hard's success in the late 1980s led to a franchise revolving around Bruce Willis' John McClane. In addition to the first movie, the series includes Die Hard 2 (1990), Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), Live Free or Die Hard (2007), and A Good Day to Die Hard (2013).

While many prefer traditional Christmas films (e.g. It's a Wonderful Life) or cheesy rom-coms (e.g. Hot...

Netflix Ends 2024 On High Note As Kingsman Star's Action Thriller Continues 5-Year Rotten Tomatoes Streak
Image
The Taron Egerton thriller Carry-On has become a success on Rotten Tomatoes. The new movie, which follows a Tsa agent who is threatened via an earpiece by a mysterious terrorist (Jason Bateman) who wants him to let a dangerous package through security, was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who helmed the Liam Neeson action-thrillers Unknown, Non-Stop, Run All Night, and The Commuter. The Carry-On cast also includes Logan Marshall-Green, Sofia Carson, Danielle Deadwyler, Theo Rossi, Dean Norris, and Sinqua Walls.

Rotten Tomatoes has now calculated an official score for Carry-On. While the score could fluctuate as more reviews are added, now that 22 different critics have weighed in, the movie has debuted on the review aggregator platform with a solidly Fresh score of 86%. This continues a positive five-year streak for the star, who has not had a Rotten score on the platform since 2018's Robin Hood, which was one of just three...

Carry-On Review: Jaume Collet-Serra Delivers A New Christmas Crime Classic
Image
Bruce Springsteen’s “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town” plays out as we pan down from the sky to find a mysterious man we’ll know only as Traveler (Jason Bateman) arriving to make a deal for an ominous suitcase, murdering everyone on sight before he acquires it. Within moments, Jaume Collet-Serra establishes the new Netflix action thriller Carry-On as festive fanfare that doesn’t fuck around. Having spent the last half-decade navigating the studio blockbuster minefield with Jungle Cruise and Black Adam, Collet-Serra’s latest sees the director return to what he does best: a mid-budget programmer with genuine, everyday characters in drastic situations and a little more on its mind than you’d expect.

Traveler, played by Bateman with ruthless efficiency and sinister smarm, refers to himself as a “freelance facilitator.” His latest job: get that suitcase through airport security and onto a plane for surely nefarious means.

‘Carry-On’ Review: Taron Egerton And Jason Bateman Play Tense Cat-And-Mouse Game In Netflix’s Time-Bomb-Ticking Holiday Airport Thriller
Image
In an attempt to most obviously appeal to fans of Die Hard (and who isn’t?), director Jaume Collet-Serra has come up with something designed for them, especially for those who like Christmas movies that will freak you out.

Of course Die Hard was a hard-core action thriller set in a office tower in Century City at Christmas, but many are hard-pressed to call it a “Christmas movie” — even though it always turns up near the top of Yuletide favorites. Collet-Serra, in setting a thriller on Christmas Eve during the most crowded time imaginable for travelers, put his film Carry-On at Lax, one of the world’s busiest airports, and that becomes the perfect setting if you want a heart-racing action flick with a holiday chaser.

Of course a film like this is unquestionably derivative with elements of any number in the genre from Speed to Phone Booth, and other...

‘Carry-On’ Movie Spoilers And Summary: Is The Traveler Dead Or Alive?
Image
Carry-On is an entertaining American action thriller that has just the right dose of Christmas elements to make it to the holiday must-watch list. The film revolves around a young Tsa officer, Ethan Kopek, and the unexpected mess he got himself entangled in on Christmas Eve. Ethan had recently discovered that his girlfriend, Nora, was pregnant, and the thought of bringing a child into the world left him shaken. He was excited as well as nervous, but Nora’s constant support and her faith in him boosted Ethan’s confidence. He’d once wanted to join the police force, but he never made the cut, and Nora often wondered if becoming a police officer would help Ethan feel more fulfilled in life. As a Tsa officer, Ethan had never really shown his true potential because he did not care about the job. But with a baby on the way, Ethan...

‘Carry On’ Ending Explained: Will There Be A Sequel?
Image
Carry On’s ending is centered around Tsa officer Ethan Kopek’s efforts to prevent the Traveler from releasing a deadly nerve agent to kill Congresswoman Grace Turner. The movie largely takes place at the Lax airport during Christmas time, where Kopek’s eagerness to bump up his salary puts him in the crosshairs of a mysterious terrorist, referred to throughout the movie only as the Traveler. Kopek doesn’t have to do much; he just has to allow a piece of carry-on luggage to pass through the scanners without any kind of hindrance. If he doesn’t, his pregnant wife, Nora, who works at the same airport, is going to catch a bullet in the head. But when Kopek learns that the luggage in question contains Novichok, he tries everything in his power to stop it from reaching its destination. But the Traveler is just too good to be thwarted by Kopek’s tricks.

‘Carry-On’ Review: Tsa Poster Boy Taron Egerton and an Evil Jason Bateman Ground Netflix’s Out-There Christmas Thriller
Image
The sort of relatably flawed everyday hero who might have been played by Mel Gibson or Bruce Willis back in the ’80s, Ethan Kopek always wanted to be a cop. Instead, he’s working airport security — and not even the essential job of scanning passengers’ baggage for bombs. For the past three years, this dead-end Tsa agent’s been stuck somewhere deep in the bowels of Lax airport, doing who knows what, dreaming of a promotion that will never come.

Dumb-fun Netflix potboiler “Carry-On” takes place on Christmas Eve, one of the busiest travel times of the year, and Ethan (Taron Egerton) has picked this moment to prove himself, begging his boss (a surly Dean Norris) to “put me on a machine.” Feeling generous, his supervisor agrees, but this is hardly Ethan’s lucky day. Within minutes of sitting down at the Ct scanner, Ethan finds himself at the center...

‘Carry-On’ Review – Jaume Collet-Serra’s Holiday Thriller Gets the Adrenaline Pumping
Image
