Maika Monroe drops out of Neon horror movie in favor of a Colleen Hoover adaptation
Image
Neon's upcoming horror film Brides from Watcher director Chloe Okuno just received an update, leaving fans in a good news/bad news situation. Bad news first. Maika Monroe will no longer star in the vehicle that would have reunited her with Okuno after the pair worked together on Watcher.

The good news is that she's been replaced by Olivia Cooke, who is also a great actress and no stranger to the world of horror, having starred in Thoroughbreds, Ouija, and Bates Motel, though nowadays she's best known for playing Alicent Hightower in House of the Dragon.

Deadline shares that Monroe had to drop out of the project due to scheduling issues with her film Reminders of Him, an adaptation of the Colleen Hoover novel of the same name in production from Universal Pictures.

Okuno made her feature directorial debut with Watcher, a Hitchcockian thriller about a woman who believes...

Image
Despite not returning for the hotly anticipated followup to slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer, Sarah Michelle Gellar knows more about the sequel than her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., who reprises his original role in the film.

When pressed for details by the anchors, Gellar cheekily teased: “Guess what? Somebody kills someone and they get a letter, and it says, ‘I know what you did last summer.’ But that’s just for you guys — don’t [tell anyone].”

Writer-director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson‘s Ikwydls follows new faces who are confronted with blackmail — and murder — after their crime from the past summer comes back to haunt them. Stars Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt...

Freddie Prinze Jr. Is a Silver Fox in New ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Reboot Image
Image
The maniacal fisherman may be out for blood in Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, but Freddie Prinze Jr. is out here to slay. Included in the lineup of first-look images for this summer at the cinema, USA Today snatched a new look at the actor’s return to the slasher franchise, which sees him reprise a role from nearly three decades ago. The image in question features Prinze Jr.’s Ray Bronson, standing alongside newcomers Chase Sui Wonders (Bodies Bodies Bodies), Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks), and Sarah Pidgeon (The Wilds), each of whom find themselves in deep, dark, and (to them) uncharted waters in the legacy sequel. The...

New Adaptation From It Ends With Us Author Adds Gilmore Girls Actress to Star-Studded Cast
Image
Colleen Hoover is one of the most popular contemporary romance authors, rising to fame thanks to novels like Ugly Love, Confess, and Slam. However, Hoover's popularity skyrocketed in 2024 with the release of It Ends With Us, the adaptation of her bestselling 2016 novel.

Although It Ends With Us ended up being a widely controversial project because of the legal battle between director, producer, and star Justin Baldoni and lead actress Blake Lively, the movie was a box office hit. The film received mixed reviews from the critics, but the audience enjoyed it and grossed $349.7 million at the worldwide box office against a modest $25 million budget. More adaptations are on the way, and Deadline revealed that Universal's adaptation of Reminders of Him has just added Gilmore Girls star Lauren Graham to the cast.

Reminders of Him is the last standalone novel Coover published, which was released on Jan. 18, 2022. The same year,...

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Reboot Director ‘Pitched Crazy Sh*t’ to Original Star Sarah Michelle Gellar to Convince Her to Return
Image
No, Sarah Michelle Gellar isn’t returning this summer for the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” reboot. Why? Because her iconic character Helen Shivers is “the most dead a person could be.” To be fair, she did have the most memorable kill scene in the 1997 original film…

But that didn’t stop “I Know What You Did Last Summer” reboot director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson from gently “harassing” Gellar to reconsider returning to the franchise. Robinson previously worked with Gellar on the 2022 Netflix film “Do Revenge,” and the duo have remained close since.

Robinson told Entertainment Weekly that, while original franchise stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are returning for the horror sequel, Gellar had to turn down reprising her role. “I tried, Ok? I harassed her! But she is dead,” Robinson told the outlet. “I tried to pitch some crazy shit too. I was like, ‘What...

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Director ‘Tried Relentlessly’ to Convince Sarah Michelle Gellar to Return for Sequel Despite Her Character’s Death: I Had to ‘Pitch Some Crazy S—’
Image
Despite her best efforts, writer-director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson couldn’t bring Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Helen Shivers back to life for the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” reboot.

In a recent conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Robinson said she “tried relentlessly” to fit Gellar into the new “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” Her efforts were for naught, however, because Robinson could not maneuver around the fact that Helen Shivers “is dead.”

“I tried, okay? I harassed her! But she is dead,” Robinson said. “I tried to pitch some crazy shit too. I was like, ‘What if it’s like you weren’t dead and you’re actually alive, but in hiding?’ And Sarah’s like, ‘I was on ice. I was the most dead a person could be. Monkeypaw’s Development Team Hit With Layoffs
Image
Exclusive: Monkeypaw Productions, the production company of Oscar-winning genre maestro Jordan Peele, has undergone layoffs within its development department, multiple sources tell Deadline.

The layoffs have affected Christopher Rosati, Jamal M. Watson and Alex Kim, the company’s three Vice Presidents of Development and Production, as well as four to five junior staffers at the coordinator and assistant levels.

Word of layoffs at Monkeypaw comes ahead of the release of the company’s football-themed horror film Him, one of the most anticipated genre titles of the year, from director Justin Tipping. Aside from economic realities facing the entire industry in this moment, in a time of contraction, the reasoning behind the cuts hasn’t been made clear. Chatter about the company was widespread yesterday, with industry observers expecting that overhead at Monkeypaw had come down following a renegotiation of its overall deal with Universal Studio Group.

However, sources close to...

Image
The I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel brings back some fan-favorite characters from the original movie. WHile Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. will repirse their roles from the 1997 film, Sarah Michelle Gellar turned down a potential appearance.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, director Jennifer Kaytin shared a conversation she had with Gellar about returning for the latest installment in the horror franchise. But since Gellar's character, Helen Shivers, had died, the actor decided against it. "I tried, okay? I harassed her! But she is dead," Robinson explained. "I tried to pitch some crazy s**t too. I was like, ‘What if it’s like you weren’t dead, and you’re actually alive, but in hiding?’ And Sarah’s like, ‘I was on ice. I was the most dead a person could be. You can see my frozen body.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, but what if?...

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Sequel Trailer Brings Horror Franchise Back to Life
Image
The first trailer for I Know What You Did Last Summer has quite a hook.

Sony released the trailer online Tuesday after debuting the footage last month at CinemaCon. Hitting theaters July 18, director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s sequel revives the horror franchise that launched with the original 1997 movie of the same name.

I Know What You Did Last Summer stars Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Hauer-King and Chase Sui Wonders, with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. reprising their roles from the first feature and its 1998 follow-up.

The new film centers on a group of five friends facing dangerous consequences after making a pact to stay silent about their involvement in a tragic car accident. The aftermath leads them to connect with two survivors of the Southport Massacre from 1997.

“This isn’t the first time there’s been violence like this in Southport,” Prinze says in the trailer.
