Ahead of the wide release of Disney’s Snow White, the film’s first reviews from critics have been rolling in on Wednesday, and they’ve been decidedly mixed.

Directed by Marc Webb, the live-action adaptation of the 1937 Disney animated classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs sees a princess, Snow White (Rachel Zegler), join forces with seven dwarfs to liberate her kingdom from her cruel stepmother, the Evil Queen (Gal Gadot).

For years, the film has been under fire for a combination of controversies, including Zegler’s casting and her opinionated remarks about the original animated film. The star also drew heat for her hostile reaction to Donald Trump’s re-election (she later apologized) and her pro-Palestine stance. People on social media have also attempted to paint a feuding narrative between Zegler and Gadot, the latter of which has spoken out against antisemitism and advocated for the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza.

The debut score has been revealed for the new Snow White remake. Even ahead of its release, the film was rather polarizing, and that trend will continue with the divisive Rotten Tomatoes score.

Heading into its opening weekend, Snow White has garnered a debut score on Rotten Tomatoes of 48%. Initially, the early reactions from critics on social media were very promising, though with many other critics having more harsh opinions, the Rotten Tomatoes score is almost firmly right in the middle of the road. The number may continue to fluctuate as added reviews come in, but this is a clear indicator that the critics can't agree on how they feel about Snow White.

"Snow White offers a fresh spin on the classic tale that is elevated to the realm of a new original musical thanks to tracks by Pasek and Paul," reads one glowing review by Kristen Maldonado of Pop Culture Planet.

The first feature film produced with cel animation, Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs remains a visual delight 88 years after its release. And though it’s almost entirely a slapstick comedy—the dwarfs’ madcap adventures in washing up for supper make up a surprisingly large chunk of the film’s 80 minutes—there’s a specificity in the vaudevillian energy that keeps the silliness from ever becoming cloying.

But as far as plot and characterization goes, it’s rather thin (the dwarfs’ names are descriptive adjectives after all). That, though, is intentional, as the story is merely a picnic blanket for the animators’ feast. And though there are similarly aesthetic joys to be found, along with some charming performances, in Marc Webb’s live-action remake, titled simply (and pointedly) Snow White, the original tale proves too skeletal to support the film’s weightier ambitions.

According to Deadline, the Mouse House's latest live-action remake is on track to take in between a $45M-$50M in North America and another $55M abroad for a worldwide debut of around $100M.

This wouldn't usually be seen as a bad start, but a recent Forbes article claimed that Snow White's budget had ballooned to a whopping $269.4 million by the end of 2023 (current reports put it at $250M), which puts a lot of pressure on the movie to become a massive box office success. The movie won't have much in the way of competition for a while, but it'll need strong legs to get it where it needs to be.

Though we are used to seeing a lot of gushing first reactions for pretty much every movie, Disney's latest live-action remake has come in for backlash from all corners for a number of reasons. The trailers didn't exactly do much to build anticipation, either, even among those who would usually look forward to Disney fare.

Disney held a scaled back premiere for the movie with no press invited to interview the stars on the red carped, and many believe the reason comes down to supposed "controversies" surrounding lead stars Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot.

The world premiere of Disney's live-action Snow White movie was held last night (we'll have the first reactions for you a little later on), but the event lacked the glitz and glam we're used to seeing when the Mouse House usually screens a new film for the first time.

Press were not invited to interview the stars on the red carpet in favor of "a more celebratory, family-friendly afternoon event to match the tone and target audience for the film."

The real reason is believed to be at least partially due to "controversies" surrounding leads Rachel Zegler, who has been an outspoken supporter of Palestine and critic of President Donald Trump, and Gal Gadot, who has come to the defence of her home country of Israel. There have also been reports that both actresses didn't really get along while shooting the movie (although this has been disputed).

Notable attendees included, of course, titular princess Rachel Zegler and evil queen Gal Gadot, as well as Disney CEO Bob Iger and producer Marc Platt; also at the fete were enthusiastic girls donning yellow and blue, greeted by starlet Zegler, and members of the Boys and Girls Club of San Fernando and Malibu affected by the Los Angeles wildfires earlier this year.

Tickets for Snow White are now on sale, and Disney has released a new trailer, a teaser focusing on the Evil Queen (Gal Gadot), and a number of new posters for its latest live-action remake.

The trailer features quite a bit of new footage of Rachel Zegler's titular Princess arriving to the Enchanted Forest, where she encounters her seven diminutive companions for the first time.

The teaser, meanwhile, shows the Queen erupting in anger upon learning that her stepdaughter still lives and is "fairest of them all." We also get to see the villain's "old crone" form, as she tricks Snow White into accepting the gift of a poisoned apple.

Rachel Zegler, the star of Disney’s Snow White, was in Tokyo earlier today to perform “Waiting on a Wish,” the first single from Walt Disney Records’ original soundtrack. You can watch both the music video for the song and an acoustic version of the song in new videos.

She was joined on stage by local actress and singer Sakura Kiryu, who provides the Japanese dubbing voice of Snow White, at Roppongi Hills Arena. They performed for hundreds of fans who lined the red carpet.

Exclusive: Euphoria’s Maude Apatow has set the leads for her feature directorial debut, Poetic License, bringing aboard Andrew Barth Feldman (No Hard Feelings), Cooper Hoffman (Saturday Night), Leslie Mann (This Is 40) and Nico Parker (The Last of Us) for the film penned by Raffi Donatich.

Marking the first produced project for Jewelbox Pictures, Apatow’s recently launched production company with longtime collaborator and friend Olivia Rosenbloom, on which we were first to report, Poetic License follows Liz, a former therapist and soon-to-be empty nester, as she becomes the unexpected point of tension between two inseparable best friends and college seniors, Sam and Ari. Liz is forced to reexamine her life as the boys’ friendship unravels in a fierce competition for her affection.

Although he co-led the 2023 political satire Maximum Truth, the Teen Wolf alum has largely stepped away from major roles since 2022's The Outfit and Not Okay. The actor and original Saturday Night Live castmember took to X, formerly Twitter, on Friday to share his thoughts on director Jason Reitman’s latest film, which centers on the 90 minutes leading up to the sketch comedy show’s first broadcast in 1975.

“Cracking a Head to applaud Jason Reitman’s triumphant SNL film. Wow!” Aykroyd wrote after watching the movie at his local theater. “What a propulsive, engaging, funny, beautifully cast and acted, suspenseful, adventurous, music-filled ride. A perfect window into the creative process at its highest level. Pretty accurate too.”

The Ghostbusters actor continued, “I was there that night and got to relive it wonderfully again. Congratulations Gil, Jason and Blumie. Don’t miss it whether you know the show or not. It is a stand-alone masterpiece and surefire candidate for Best Picture.”

“Saturday Night Live’s” 50th season got off to a good start this past weekend.

Though Jean Smart (“Hacks”) and Jelly Roll were the host and musical guest, respectively, the real stars of “SNL” Episode #1865 were the new character assignments ahead of the 2024 U.S. presidential election.

Former “SNL” cast member (1986-1993) Dana Carvey is our absent-minded (and just generally absent) outgoing commander-in-chief Joe Biden, Maya Rudolph is of course back as Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, Andy Samberg returned to Studio 8H as her husband — the second gentleman who could become the first gentleman come January — Doug Emhoff, standup comedian Jim Gaffigan as her running mate Tim Walz, Bowen Yang as the Republican VP candidate Jd Vance, and of course James Austin Johnson as former president Donald Trump.

The September 28 season premiere landed 5.3 million viewers, the most for a season premiere episode since 2020, when Chris Rock opened the season as host.

Columbia Pictures’ Saturday Night from Jason Reitman debuted at $265k, a great $53k per theater that’s the second-best limited opening of the year, and the best since June when Kinds Of Kindness also opened in 5 theaters (to a $75k PTA). It’s been a long a slightly dower wait for something to pop.

Saturday Night made $108K on Friday, $88K on Saturday and a projected $69K on Sunday in LA and New York. Expands Oct. 4 before opening wide on Oct 11 and looks well set up for a nice theatrical run with strong reviews and word of mouth since premiering at Telluride and Toronto.

Sarah Hyland has spent her summer performing in the musical Little Shop of Horrors and she joined the cast for a special Times Square performance!

The 33-year-old Modern Family actress performed “Skid Row” alongside co-star Andrew Barth Feldman and other castmates on Thursday afternoon (September 19) in New York City.

The event celebrated the Off-Broadway production’s 5th anniversary with current and former stars coming together to unveil an Audrey II sculpture that will sit in Times Square. The next stars of the production were also just announced!

Jean Smart plays a late-night talk show host on HBO’s “Hacks,” and now the Emmy winner will get her turn hosting the biggest late-night sketch comedy show of all-time: “Saturday Night Live.”

Smart will kick off Season 50 of the iconic series on September 28 — it’s her first time as host. Her musical guest Jelly Roll is also making his “SNL” debut. Smart just won her third Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on “Hacks,” which was awarded best comedy. Smart now has six overall Emmy Awards across her career.

“SNL” will mark its actual 50th anniversary with a celebratory weekend culminating in a live primetime special on Sunday, February 16. We now know the first five hosts of the season.

After Smart, stand-up comedian Nate Bargatze makes a swift return after a great episode last season. Coldplay, regulars to the program, is his musical guest.
