H Spencer Young is a New York-based writer/director and interdisciplinary artist whose work blends cinematic storytelling with conceptual sophistication. A graduate of The American University with a B.A. in Visual Media and a minor in Cinema Studies, Spencer's award-winning narrative thesis film earned top honors in the university-wide American Visions juried competition. Additionally, he studied at FAMU, the Czech National Film School in Prague, sponsored by renowned Czech author and screenwriter Arnost Lustig.
Spencer was one of just 13 students selected nationwide by historian Douglas Brinkley for The Majic Bus, a landmark experiential learning program traveling to 44 states and studying American civil rights history, American road literature, and cultural geography. As part of the journey, he studied directly with major American icons such as Toni Morrison, Kurt Vonnegut, Hunter S. Thompson, Rita Dove, Robert Hunter, Melba Patillo Beals, Steven Soderbergh, William Kennedy, and Arthur Miller.
Spencer's directing work spans narrative, documentary, fashion, music video, and fine art. He has helmed campaigns and films for global brands including Hudson's Bay Company, Nike, Lord & Taylor, Honor, Juice Press, and Saks Fifth Avenue, with premieres in W Magazine and The Atlantic. His music video for Joan as Police Woman's Warning Bell was featured by The Atlantic, and he has also directed and edited pieces for Mykki Blanco, Rashid Johnson (Samuel in Space for Ballroom Marfa), and more.
As an artist, Spencer has exhibited at Art Basel / Untitled Art (with Beverly's, curated by Leah Dixon), Art Basel Miami Beach (Satellite Art Fair), and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD). His work has been included in exhibitions curated by the New York Public Library, Carriage Trade Gallery, the Center for Art Law, and was featured in Simultaneous Soloists, a publication on Anthony McCall.
Spencer continues to create work across disciplines, with recent projects including his second feature documentary, now in production. He is known for projects that merge emotional resonance, narrative and visual originality, and cultural insight.
