Strange New Worlds Season 3 Episode 3 Plunges Star Trek Straight Into The Last Of Us
Image
Watch out, redshirts! This article contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" season 3, episode 3, "Shuttle to Kenfori."

"Star Trek" in general and "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" in particular doesn't hesitate to draw inspiration from other genres. In fact, "Strange New Worlds" season 3 has now delivered two consecutive episodes that wink and nod to specific works of fiction. Episode 2, "Wedding Bell Blues," brought back William Campbell's child-like alien Trelane (now played by Rhys Darby of "Our Flag Means Death" fame) to pose as a wedding planner for the recently broken up Spock (Ethan Peck) and Chistine Chapel (Jess Bush). The antagonist resets the situation whenever Spock refuses to comply, thus locking the half-Vulcan in a loop that seems to pay homage to "Groundhog Day." Now, episode 3, titled "Shuttle to Kenfori," seems to riff on a far more recent pop culture phenomenon: HBO's post-apocalyptic juggernaut series "The Last of Us.

Big Move for Dcu’s ‘Booster Gold’ Series as New Writer Steps In
Image
The Booster Gold series is back on track at HBO Max, and it’s got a new creative lead. David Jenkins, best known for creating the comedy Our Flag Means Death, has been brought in to write the pilot. If the show goes to series, Jenkins is also expected to take over as showrunner.

This news comes at a busy time for Warner Bros. Discovery, especially after The Penguin scored 24 Emmy nominations. That kind of success could give Booster Gold a boost as one of the next big DC TV projects.

Booster Gold is based on the DC Comics character created by Dan Jurgens. The main character, Michael Jon “Booster” Carter, is from Gotham City and was once a college football star. He got kicked out of school for gambling, but later used future tech to become a superhero.

He’s known for chasing fame and fortune and not always being the most serious guy.

Dcu’s ‘Booster Gold’ TV Show Gets an Important Production Update
Image
HBO Max is finally moving ahead with its Booster Gold series, and they’ve found the person to lead it. David Jenkins, the creator of Our Flag Means Death, has signed on to write the pilot episode. If the show gets picked up, he’s expected to take over as showrunner too.

This news comes not long after a big Emmy nomination day for The Penguin, another DC-related project. That show scored 24 nominations, including ones for Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti.

With that kind of momentum, Booster Gold could be the next big DC TV project for Warner Bros. Discovery.

The character Booster Gold was created by Dan Jurgens. His real name is Michael Jon “Booster” Carter, and he’s from Gotham City. He was a college football star who lost his scholarship after getting caught gambling. Later, he used futuristic technology to become a superhero, though he’s mostly...

HBO Max is progressing with its Booster Gold TV series and has attached Our Flag Means Death creator David Jenkins to write the pilot. If taken to series, we understand the plan is for Jenkins to show-run.

Coming off the back of a landmark Emmy nominations day for The Penguin, Booster Gold could therefore become one of Warner Bros. Discovery’s next big DC Comics TV adaptations.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3: What Poem Is Spock Quoting To Nurse Chapel?
Image
In the "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode "Wedding Bells Blues," Spock (Ethan Peck) awakens in bed next to Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) on the morning of their wedding. They are blissed out and happy to celebrate their nuptials, and they are eager to see all their friends dressed up at the ceremony.

This is a curious place for Spock to wake up, however, as the pair had never gotten engaged. Indeed, they recently announced that they would certainly not be pursuing a relationship, allowing Chapel to begin a relationship with a man maned Korby (Cillian O'Sullivan). As Spock will eventually learn, reality has shifted under him at the hands of a playful godlike being played by Rhys Darby. This godlike being has sensed that Spock and Chapel are into each other, and decided to use his powers to stage a wedding, erasing everyone's memories and forcing them to play-act a grand romance.

Danny Jelinek Ships a Gamified Nightmare of Technocapitalism in Saturated Satire ‘Word of Mouth’
Image
What begins as a satirical jab at influencer culture soon spirals into a disorienting nightmare in director Danny Jelinke’s Word of Mouth. Blurring the lines between genuine interaction and corporate manipulation, Ana, a lonely young woman, becomes addicted to an AI-driven mobile app, trapping her in a deteriorating world where capitalism doesn’t just influence our behaviour but rewires our very means of communication. Jelinek employs a bright, saturated aesthetic reminiscent of classic teen comedies, creating a deceptive veneer of cheerfulness that makes the encroaching warped ethics and shady behaviour all the more jarring. The glossy, artificial sheen of tech advertising is replicated in every frame, emphasising how seamlessly predatory systems disguise themselves as harmless fun. Yet, as Ana’s gamified reality fractures, so too does the film’s visual language, warping reflections into a grotesque funhouse of consumerist identity and forcing her (and the audience) to confront the...

Strange New Worlds Season 3 Finally Reveals That A Certain Pop Song Still Exists In The Star Trek Universe
Image
The use of popular music from the late 20th century in "Star Trek" has always been a bit of a gamble, not least of all because it begs the question: Why did this particular song stand the test of time? It can also pull viewers out of the moment, creating a bit of cognitive dissonance as they suddenly find themselves hearing the sounds of the Beastie Boys or Wyclef Jean in the sci-fi world of "Star Trek." Other times, however, it can honestly be a lot of fun.

Case in point: In the wildly silly second episode of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" season 3, "Wedding Bell Blues," we discover that a very well-known 1980s pop song has endured well into the 23rd century, and the whole Enterprise crew gets to have a blast dancing to it. And while its inclusion might make some audience members roll their eyes or groan,...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Drops The Perfect Twilight Zone Reference
Image
Spoilers for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" to follow.

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" sure loves to put Spock (Ethan Peck) in comedic situations. In season 1's "Spock Amok," he accidentally exchanged bodies with his fiancee T'Pring (Gia Sandhu) during a mind meld gone wrong. Then, in season 2's "Charades" (which /Film named the funniest "Star Trek" episode ever), Spock was transformed into a full-blooded human and had to relearn how to be a Vulcan.

Now, "Strange New Worlds" season 3 has unveiled its own comedic Spock adventure as part of its two-episode premiere. To do so, it's also brought back one of the campiest yet most powerful villains from "Star Trek: The Original Series."

In "Wedding Bell Blues" (helmed by "Charades" director Jordan Canning), Spock and Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) are getting married! Except, they previously broke up ... and Christine has just arrived on the Enterprise with her new boyfriend,...

Image
This article contains mild spoilers for the "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode "Wedding Bell Blues."

In the "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode "Wedding Bell Blues," Spock (Ethan Peck) finds himself growing despondent over the fact that he and Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) may not be destined to date. Spock and Chapel spend several months apart, only for her to return with a new boyfriend, a charming scientist named Roger Korby (Cillian O'Sullivan). Spock is as heartbroken as a Vulcan can be.

There is a reception in a bar thereafter, and Spock finds himself feeling jealousy watching Chapel and Korby together. He walks over to the bartender (Rhys Darby), who notices his pain. The bartender gives him a strong cocktail, and Spock retires to his quarters. When he wakes up, reality has shifted. Chapel in his bed with him, smiling happily. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Bosses Confirm the Status of a Classic Original Series Character with Latest Episode
Image
This article contains spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, Episode 2, titled "Wedding Bell Blues."

Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worldsmay have started with the thrilling conclusion of the cliffhanger that closed out the second season of the Paramount+ series. But the second episode, “Wedding Bell Blues,” shifted gears entirely and, in the process, made an old-school Trek character’s headcanon status actual Star Trek canon.

In “Wedding Bell Blues,” things go awry when Spock (Ethan Peck) wishes that things were different between him and Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) when she returns to the Enterprise after a three-month fellowship with a new boyfriend. Spock’s wish becomes a reality when a mysterious and sharply-dressed new character, played by Rhys Darby, grants his wish, and he wakes up about to be married to Nurse Chapel.

Strange New Worlds season 3 episode 2 recap: Spock’s getting married!?
Image
“Greetings and Felicitations!”

I couldn’t help but think of that while watching the second episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, season 3. Of course, that quote comes from the original Star Trek episode, “The Squire of Gothos,” but Snw’s “Wedding Bell Blues” was clearly taking inspiration from that episode.

It also takes inspiration from another trickster god of Star Trek in this superpowered wedding episode.

“Wedding Bell Blues” recap

“Wedding Bell Blues” opens three months after the events of “Hegemony, Parts I & II,” and Spock is eagerly awaiting (as much as Vulcans allow themselves to be eager) the return of Christine Chapel from her fellowship working with Dr. Roger Corby. When Chapel beams aboard, she is accompanied by Dr. Corby (Cillian O’Sullivan), with whom Chapel has started a relationship.

After Mr. Spock pouts a bit, a mysterious bartender offers him a drink. Suddenly, Spock awakens in bed with...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Episode 2 Is A Prequel To Two Classic Tos Adventures
Image
"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is a more direct prequel to the original show than "Star Trek: Enterprise." Set less than a decade before "The Original Series," "Strange New Worlds" follows the U.S.S. Enterprise, captained by Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), who has some familiar faces already on the crew: Spock (Ethan Peck), Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush), and now Scotty (Martin Quinn).

"Strange New Worlds" is unafraid to call back (forward?) to classic "Original Series" episodes, even if the show still sticks (mostly) to "Trek" canon. For example, the show has brought back the reptilian Gorn as recurring villains, setting up Captain Kirk's (William Shatner) famous clash with a Gorn in the 1967 "Original Series" episode "Arena," and Lieutenant LA'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) is a descendant of the most infamous "Star Trek" villain, Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalbán).

The two-episode premiere of "Strange New...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3's Big Villain Reveal Was 'Borrowed' From Fan Canon [Exclusive]
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" season 3, episode 2, "Wedding Bell Blues."

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" season 3, episode 2 ("Wedding Bell Blues") brings back "The Original Series" character Trelane ("Our Flag Means Death" star Rhys Darby) from "Tos" season 1 episode "The Squire of Gothos." Originally played by William Campbell, Trelane presents himself as a dashing man who wears a Regency-era tailcoat and claims to be a general. In actuality, he's a mischievous child from a reality-bending alien species, and wields powers that resemble those of the time and energy-manipulating residents of the Q Continuum -- such as the notorious "Star Trek: The Next Generation" wild card, Q (John de Lancie).

In "Wedding Bell Blues," Trelane exhibits the same powerful but immature traits. He imposes himself on the lovelorn Spock like a roguish genie, force-rebooting the science officer's recently-ended romance with Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) into an impending...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3's Big Cameo Confirms A Decades-Old Fan Theory About A Classic Villain
Image
This article contains spoilers for the "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode "Wedding Bell Blues."

The theory goes back to September 28, 1987, when the first episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" -- called "Encounter at Farpoint" -- aired. That episode featured an all-powerful space deity named Q (John De Lancie) who stopped the U.S.S. Enterprise-d dead in its tracks to explain that humanity had no business being in space. Using his magical powers, Q put humanity on trial, using Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) as its representative. The Enterprise would only be allowed to continue its trek through the stars if it could solve the mystery of Farpoint Station, the place they were heading in the first place.

The impishness of Q and his magically manifested courtroom immediately reminded old-school Trekkies of the original "Star Trek" episode "The Squire of Gothos." In that episode, The U.S.S. Enterprise...

‘Our Flag Means Death’ Star, 51, Addresses Hopes of Revisiting the HBO Series
Image
Despite a passionate fan base and a campaign that has seen everything from social media rallies to physical billboards, Our Flag Means Death remains docked. But in this industry, nothing is ever a foregone conclusion. The pirate comedy, created by David Jenkins and starring Rhys Darby as the unhinged “Gentleman Pirate” Stede Bonnet, was axed by HBO after just two seasons. Now, with most of the creative crew moving on to new ventures, including Darby himself, everyone is eager to find out if there's any light at the end of this tunnel.

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, conducted by John Orquiola, Darby addressed the future, or lack thereof, of the series. The conversation primarily centered around Darby’s latest project, a guest role in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3. But the question that’s been on every fan's mind inevitably surfaced — Is there still hope for Our...

Rhys Darby Gives Bittersweet Update On The Future Of His Canceled 95% Rt HBO Series
Image
Rhys Darby has lent his talents to many iconic TV shows, but Our Flag Means Death might be his most beloved work to date, making its cancellation all the more tragic. Airing for two seasons from 2022 to 2023 on HBO, Our Flag Means Death starred Darby and Taika Waititi as two legendary pirates, Stede Bonnet and Edward Teach.

However, Our Flag Means Death stood out because it was such a loose and contemporary take on the historical stories of the pirates. Since the series was cut short, it will be exciting to see Darby join the cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as a guest star since the new Star Trek has found success on streaming, topping the charts on Amazon Prime Video.

While fans of Our Flag Means Death's historical story will enjoy watching Darby in a new project, there are still lingering questions about the fate of the beloved series.

Underrated Horror Comedy Series 'Wellington Paranormal' Finds New Streaming Home
Image
When What We Do in the Shadows hit theaters in the U.S. back in 2015, it became an immediate hit. Created by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, the mockumentary brought something fresh to an otherwise stagnant subgenre, and is today regarded as one of the best horror comedies ever made. The spin-off series of the same name that hit FX in 2019 enjoyed similar, if not greater success, but in between the two, there was another short-lived spin-off you may have either missed, or forgotten about completely: Wellington Paranormal.

Starring Mike Minogue and Karen O'Leary as Officers Minogue and O'Leary from the feature film, Wellington Paranormal traces a group of New Zealand police investigators who track supernatural events, including cases of demon possession, haunted houses, and blood bank robberies. Lasting for four seasons and a Christmas special, the series maintains the mockumentary format as it introduces viewers to a new crop of hilarious threats,...
