By rights, Superman & Lois should have ended after season 3. The CW was looking to get out of producing pricey scripted dramas, and with DC Studios' Superman reboot on the way, there was every chance the plug would be pulled without a satisfying resolution.
Fortunately, all the pieces fell into place, and we got a truncated fourth and final season. A few cast members fell by the wayside due to budget cuts, but Superman & Lois ended on a high note and managed to satisfy fans.
Season 4 introduced a villainous inventor called Milton, played by Nikolai Witschl. On the page, Brainiac poses as the human Milton Fine, and there were hints that Superman & Lois' "Milton" would eventually be revealed as the classic Superman baddie (he was even referred to as a "brainiac" at one point).
Talking to Screen Rant and Fan Expo Philadelphia, Lex Luthor actor Michael Cudlitz confirmed that the series scrapped plans for Brainiac.

The following contains spoilers for Superman & Lois Season 4, Episode 10, "It Went By So Fast," now available on the CW app. This article contains discussion of suicide.
When fans saw Superman & Lois turn Bizarro into Doomsday, they were skeptical at first. They wondered if it would be mishandled the way Zack Snyder's Doomsday was after being made from the DNA of General Zod. Thankfully, that wasn't the case. Doomsday was layered with humanity like never before.
However, that didn't change one fact: Michael Cudlitz's Lex Luthor kept finding ways to unleash him as a hound of war. Despite the sympathy that viewers had for the tragic Doomsday, viewers knew he had to die. It comes in the series finale, but it's handled in the best possible way, evoking a lot of emotion,...

If things had gone differently in the DC Universe, the recent season 4 of Superman & Lois would not have been the final installment in the series, and I'm devastated the recently revealed ideas for season 5 will seemingly never come to fruition. With a conclusion that centered around a Superman and Doomsday DC rematch, as well as an ultimate confrontation with Lex Luthor, Superman & Lois ended on a high note. With that said, there were still a number of ideas and scenes that were not used and were considered for a season 5 of the live-action Superman show.
There were a number of factors that went into Superman & Lois ending in season 4, one of which had to do with the Dcu's first timeline release. With a brand-new universe launching, DC Studios clearly seems to be looking to differentiate themselves, with as few alternate DC universes as possible under their umbrella at this time.

Spoiler Alert !!!Spoiler Warning for Superman & Lois Season 4 Episode 10
Superman & Lois ended its four-season run with a bang and a whirlwind of emotions that fans might not have felt in a long while. Doomsday’s death was too sentimental, and despite being the villain of the story, many sympathized with the character.

This is quite rare in television because, as viewers, we all want to defeat evil. The way the show portrayed the antagonist is clearly full of depth, with so many layers of anger and pain that the only way to go was to release everything.

"Superman & Lois" recently aired its season 4 finale on The CW and, with that, the Arrowverse has officially come to an end. What began with "Arrow" and blossomed into a massive multiverse of DC TV shows is now a thing of the past. While this series, in particular, had a bit of a funky place in the Arrowverse thanks to some multiverse shenanigans, there are no DC shows left on the network now, so this era is good and truly over. That also means Jon Cryer, who played Lex Luthor in the Arrowverse for a time, has gotten a chance to reflect on his role as the DC villain, and he has but one regret regarding his run as Superman's greatest foe.

The Arrowverse is a vital part of TV history, one that helped bring the expansiveness, the interconnectedness, the weird, and the soapy parts of DC's comic book superhero stories to the small screen. It also featured DC superheroes that had never been adapted in live-action before (like Black Lightning and Batwoman), all the while giving the spotlight to lesser-known comic book villains such as Merlyn, Savitar, and the Eradicator.
Still, when the franchise featured big, iconic villains from the pages of DC Comics, it resulted in some truly thrilling superhero stories — like Reverse-Flash going from battling Flash to founding the Legion of Doom, or how "Superman & Lois" brought in and then reinvented Doomsday. Much like "The Flash" had time to introduce lesser-known rogues while also including some of the titular character's most famous opponents, "Superman & Lois" managed to pack in most of the Man of Steel's greatest enemies in...

Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch are glad Superman & Lois' bittersweet ending stayed true to their characters' love for one another.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly after the series finale "It Went By So Fast" aired, both leads talked about the story's decision to show Clark Kent and Lois Lane's remaining 32 years as a couple until their respective deaths. While Tulloch hoped Max would pick the final Arrowverse show up for more seasons, she ultimately felt the finale was "beautiful" and reflected on her reaction to Lois' death scene after her breast cancer made a return.

Superman & Lois ended this past Monday with its fourth and final season. A combination of The CW moving away from expensive scripted dramas and the formation of DC Studios sealed the show's fate, though James Gunn reportedly pushed for the series to get a proper ending.
Original plans obviously called for Superman & Lois to last for more than four years, and co-showrunners Todd Helbing & Brent Fletcher recently told TV Line about some of the future ideas they didn't get a chance to explore.
"If we went on for a couple more seasons, we would have really explored Brainiac," Helbing says of the iconic villain played in Superman & Lois by Nikolai Witschl. "We would have done more cool, traditional Brainiac stuff with him."

Spoilers for "Superman & Lois" to follow.
With the end of "Superman & Lois," the last remnant of the old Arrowverse has been swept away, leaving The CW's multi-series TV franchise now just a notable blip in the long history of scripted television. To be fair, the Arrowverse officially came to a close with the series finale of "The Flash" back in 2023, due to some multiverse shenanigans. But parallel universes and time travel didn't stop shows from being connected under the franchise banner before, so for all intents and purposes, this is the real, final end, and it brings a surprisingly tender sendoff for one of the show's main villains -- Doomsday.
If you watch the show and know much about the Superman comics, you'll know that this particular version of the deadly beast is a good deal different from past incarnations. That's because "Superman & Lois" did something no previous...

If Superman & Lois had been able to run for seven seasons, two major villains from the comics would have been introduced. Co-showrunners Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher recently revealed that Tyler Hoechlin's Man of Steel would have faced off against Brainiac and Darkseid had the superhero drama series lasted beyond its fourth season.
Speaking with TVLine, Helbing shared that while the final season of Superman & Lois included "some version" of everything they wanted to explore, they were unable to introduce two iconic Superman villains: Brainiac and Darkseid. "If we went on for a couple more seasons, we would have really explored Brainiac," said Helbing. "We would have done more cool, traditional Brainiac stuff with him." Instead, Brainiac was only teased in the final season through LuthorCorp employee Milton Fine (played by Nikolai Witschl), a character who was possessed by the supervillain in the comics.

Superman & Lois‘ series finale, which earned an “A” from TVLine readers, helped the show’s titular duo reach an emotionally satisfying conclusion — but their story wasn’t supposed to end there.
Prior to the CW drama’s cancellation, co-showrunners Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher hoped to have at least seven seasons to properly tell the Man of Steel’s story. While they were able to work “some version” of everything they wanted into this final season, quite a few ideas remained untouched.

After four successful seasons, Superman & Lois has finally come to an end. Debuting on The CW in February 2021, the series followed Clark Kent/Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) and wife Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) as they raise their twin sons, Jonathan and Jordan (Alex Garfin), in Smallville while the boys both learn their dad is Superman and that they, too, might have powers. Ahead of Season 4, it was confirmed it would be their final season, so Superman & Lois got to do what no other Superman adaptation got to do: give the hero's story a proper ending.
Following the finale, showrunners Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher broke down the ambitious ending to Deadline and their decision to give the character a true farewell. Superman & Lois ended its four-season run with a rollercoaster of a series finale. While the episode includes many emotional moments, showrunners Brent Fletcher and Todd Helbing, say Doomsday's death was the most poetic.
Doomsday, also known as Bizarro Superman, dies after facing off with Superman one final time. After he was defeated, the antagonist sent his evil counterpart into the sun. "I think by the end, Doomsday's life had been denigrated down to just pain, suffering, dying, and hate," Fletcher told ComicBook about the character's merciful death. "He was always raging. And so, what the end is for us, I think, is release. Release from all the hatred and the pain, and an acknowledgment between these two that they shared something."

After Superman & Lois began its run as part of the Arrowverse, and later separated from the shared TV universe at the end of Season 2, fans were left heavily heartbroken. But believe it or not, nothing upset fans more than the show’s finale, where despite high hopes of watching fan-favorite Arrowverse characters show up on screen, viewers were left high and dry.

Apparently, in Season 4 of Superman & Lois—which is the final Season of the beloved series—fans had hoped for at least a few Arrowverse characters to light up the screen. Well, even the showrunners Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher had wished to bring back one antihero from the Arrowverse. But unfortunately, the shortage of time and resources left fans to criticize the futile ending.

The following contains spoilers from Superman & Lois, Season 4, Episode 10, "It Went By So Fast" now streaming on The CW app.
After both the Warner Brothers Discovery merger and the sale of The CW to Nexstar, the fourth and final season of Superman & Lois was a gift. The network unceremoniously canceled nearly every other WB-produced series, making this very show's existence a miracle. With "It Went By So Fast," Superman & Lois delivered a series finale with the most complete telling of Kal-El's story yet. Despite ending the penultimate episode on a dire cliffhanger, the series finale trailer for Superman & Lois spoiled it. Rather than losing a fight to Doomsday, the Man of Steel had a final showdown with Lex Luthor in the sky. But even after the day is saved, for the Man of Tomorrow, nothing lasts forever.

The “Superman & Lois” showrunners knew they had a steep assignment crafting the ending for their CW adaptation of the caped superhero’s story. They were not scared to break the mold when wrapping their series after four seasons.
And they delivered. Not only did Episode 10, titled “It Went By So Fast,” see Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) save the day from Lex Luthor, it also followed as the beloved alien grew old alongside the love of his life, Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch), before dying — for the second time on the show — a considerably peaceful death surrounded by his sons, and reuniting with Lois in the afterlife before the screen faded to black.

The CW bid farewell to Superman & Lois on Monday night with an epic finale that not only closed the chapter on Lex Luthor’s terror over Smallville but also gave audiences a glimpse at the lives their favorite characters would go on to lead.
The intense first half of the episode saw Clark (Tyler Hoechlin) go toe-to-toe with not only Michael Cudlitz’s Lex Luthor but also defeat Doomsday, with the help of his sons Jordan (Alexander Garfin) and Jonathan (Michael Bishop). The pair join forces to save their father from the brink of death as Doomsday pummels Superman into the pavement, luring the killing machine away so that Superman can formulate his plan to launch Doomsday into the sun.

It's official: Supergirl isn't going to show up in the season finale of Superman & Lois. And, as a result, that and some other regrets have now been detailed by stars Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch. Hoechlin portrayed the Man of Steel in both the Arrowverse and on the beloved CW series, but he insists on not wanting to be “greedy” where his own regrets are concerned. However, Hoechlin did mention that he actually crossed a couple of key things off of his wish list for the Superman series. These included the appearance of the characters Lex Luthor (Michael Cudlitz) and the Kryptonian killing machine, Doomsday, on the show. Hoechlin said during a panel interview (per Screen Rant):
" got really lucky [and] kind of got [my] biggest wishes. [I was] excited about those two and the fact that we've gotten see them together a lot."

Although set in a different universe from the Arrowverse, Superman & Lois is considered the best CW superhero show due to its strong writing. The series had some ups and downs, especially in the last season.
After Nexstar took over CW and made major changes, Superman & Lois was one of the few shows that survived. During this time, many shows were canceled, and some of the main cast were let go. There were also fewer writers, and the number of episodes was reduced.
Despite these challenges, the show was able to wrap up its story in its 4th and final season, even though it was originally planned to run for at least 7 seasons.
At a panel during the San Francisco Fan Expo, the stars of Superman & Lois talked about plans for the show that will sadly never happen. First, they discussed the show’s connection to the larger Arrowverse.

Although set in a different reality from the Arrowverse, ‘Superman & Lois’ is easily the best CW superhero show in terms of quality writing. The show did have its ups and downs, especially last year.
After Nexstar acquired CW and the network was bound to be restructured, ‘Superman & Lois’ survived the onslaught during which many shows were canceled. This led to some of the main cast being let go, fewer writers and the episode count was slashed compared to previous seasons.
Still, the show managed to wrap up its story in the 4th season which is the show’s last, originally the show was supposed to get 7 seasons (at least.)

Superman & Lois will conclude with tonight's season 4 finale, and the hope now is that The CW series will deliver a satisfying ending. Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch first played Clark Kent and Lois Lane in the Arrowverse before Crisis on Infinite Earths sent them to their own reality.
There, they had two teenage sons and were no longer part of a world inhabited by superheroes like The Flash and Supergirl. That received something of a mixed response from fans, though it allowed the series to recast several roles, with Lex Luthor and Jimmy Olsen among the most noteworthy.
Appearing at the San Francisco Fan Expo this weekend, Superman & Lois showrunner Todd Helbing reiterated that these versions of the characters are doppelgängers of the Arrowverse versions.
Weighing in on what that means for the show, Hoechlin said he "kind of got [his] biggest wishes" with season 4 thanks to the inclusion of Luthor and Doomsday,...

The beloved series Superman & Lois is imminently coming to an end, as the finale is set to debut on The CW on Dec. 2. Ahead of the final episode's airing, series star Tyler Hoechlin commented on the possibility of revisiting his role as Clark Kent.
Per Screen Rant, Hoechlin commented on Superman & Lois ending its run while at a San Francisco Fan Expo panel. When discussing the possibility of returning in a potential spinoff, Hoechlin said he "would totally do animation," as he won't exactly miss the process of suiting up as Superman. As the actor added, "I don't have to put the suit on for that, right? [...] Sweatpants and a T-shirt sounds good to me."

Now that Superman & Lois has reached its curtain call, its actors are reflecting on their work on the hit CW series. Title stars Tyler Hoachlin and Bitsie Tulloch headlined the show for 4 seasons alongside Alex Garfin as Jordan Kent and Jordan Elsass and Michael Bishop as Jonathan Kent. Other performers include Michael Cudlitz as Lex Luthor, Wolé Parks as John Henry Irons/Steel, and Dylan Walsh as Sam Lane, among others. Superman & Lois has its roots in the Arrowverse, as Hoechlin's Superman originates from Supergirl and numerous cast members reprise their roles from that franchise. However, the latter series breaks continuity with the Arrowverse in a variety of ways, such as recasting Lex Luthor.
Showrunner Todd Helbing noted that these characters are doppelgängers of the Arrowverse iterations. In a panel hosted by Screen Rant's Joe Deckelmeier at the San Francisco Fan Expo, Hoechlin and Tulloch unpacked their thoughts on this.

While Clark Kent might not look too different from his Superman persona, his disguise seems to have worked for him since time immemorial. It has kept him and his loved ones safe from harm and allows Superman to keep saving planet Earth on his own account. Superman & Lois is the last DC show left standing on The CW network and is currently airing the episodes of its final season, receiving praise from fans for the direction it takes the titular characters - and now the design of one of DC's most iconic villains. The final season has been filled with all sorts of intriguing developments of Clark Kent, humanizing the Man of Steel more than any other iteration has in recent memory. Rather than focusing on his persona of Superman, the series prefers to focus on Clark Kent and his relationship with his family.
In telling this more unconventional story, Superman & Lois has also subverted expectations in developing some of the most iconic Superman villains. Case in point: Doomsday, the infamous villain at the heart of the "Death of Superman" story in various comics and media, is given an entirely new origin story and design.

It's fair to say we were all shocked when Supergirl was given the green light to introduce Superman in 2016. Tyler Hoechlin dropped in for a handful of cameo appearances alongside Bitsie Tulloch as Lois Lane, with both characters soon becoming regular fixtures in the Arrowverse.
Eventually, they were given their own series, Superman & Lois, but in the post-Crisis on Infinite Earths small screen DC Universe, they were moved to a new corner of the Multiverse and ended up with two teenage sons.
Despite those potentially controversial changes, the show was a hit with fans and saved from The CW's axe with its current fourth and final season (something DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn is thought to have advocated for). Now, there's only one episode left and it promises to be an action-packed emotional rollercoaster if this new trailer is any indication.

In the penultimate episode of Superman & Lois, Lex Luthor's scheming paid off as Doomsday was unleashed on Smallville. Now transformed into the most comic-accurate version of the monster we've ever seen in live-action, there was no way for Lois Lane to talk it around this time.
Superman, already weakened by his human heart, tried his best to stop the rampaging Doomsday but was whisked away by the creature before he could finish telling his family how much he loved them.
As we head into next week's finale, it appears the Man of Steel could be about to die for a second time.

The character is based on the New God Glorious Godfrey, who first appeared in The Forever People #3 in 1971 and is intended to embody the type of powerful, charismatic speaker who can talk people into justifying violence and evil. Gordon Godfrey is a pretty obscure pull for Superman & Lois, as the character hasn't been adapted much, appearing only in the series Justice League, Smallville, and Young Justice, as well as the 2019 DC Animated Movie Universe movie,...

The following contains spoilers from Superman & Lois, Season 4, Episode 8, "Sharp Dressed Man."
Superman & Lois fans finally got to see Michael Cudlitz embrace Lex Luthor's classic comic book look in Season 4, Episode 8, "Sharp Dressed Man." According to the actor, appearing in a tailored suit with a shaved head and no beard felt like a full-circle moment.
"It was awesome. I felt like we'd come full circle, finishing up the season with this iconic, traditional, current-day Lex look," Cudlitz told Entertainment Weekly. "The way I shot the beginning, the cold opening, I really wanted to have it be just a complete reveal for the audience. It's an incredible reveal visually, because everybody's been wanting this Lex and asking, where is it? And even the people who early on were not happy about the beard, they've come around, most of them."

Spoiler Alert: The article contains details about Superman & Lois.
Tom Cavanagh has made his highly-anticipated return to The CW‘s extended DC universe after The Flash ended its nine-season run last year.
On Monday’s Season 4 episode of Superman & Lois, ‘Sharp Dressed Man’, the actor appears as TV journalist Gordon Godfrey, moderating a live televised debate between Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) and Lex Luthor.
Co-showrunner Brent Fletcher explained why the role was perfect for Cavanagh. “He’s hilarious and has more energy than a 10-year-old. [The character is] not like him at all, but he can play that guy perfectly,” he told TVLine.
“It was the no-brainer of all time,” added co-showrunner Todd Helbing.
Cavanagh’s new DC role comes after he played Harrison Wells and Eobard Thawne in The Flash, as well as other Arrowverse shows Arrow, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow.

Superman & Lois' fourth and final season has spent a lot of time in Smallville and, as a result, the town's residents have wised up to the fact Clark Kent and Superman are likely one and the same.
With only three episodes left, last night's "A Regular Guy" saw Superman reveal his true identity as Clark Kent not just to them, but to the entire world. There was a brief spell where this was also the case in the comics (2015's "Truth"), though the genie was quickly put back into the bottle by DC.
In the latest instalment of The CW series, Clark does his best to convince his friends and neighbours that he's not Superman. They don't entirely buy it, and when Emmitt Pegrande returns and claims his daughter told him that Clark is Superman, he holds the mild-mannered journalist at gunpoint in the town's diner.

Last November, James Gunn cast Skyler Gisondon as the Dcu's Jimmy Olsen in Superman. However, he's not the only actor to have recently been picked to play the Man of Steel's best pal, as Douglas Smith will show up as the beloved Daily Planet photographer in Superman & Lois' final season.
This version of the character has previously been described as an "extroverted 20-something" known for being "the 'life of the party' around the office." The site adds, "Despite being work colleagues with Clark, he’s been unable to get him out of his 'awkward' shell. Unaware of Clark’s super-secret, Jimmy’s still determined to become his pal."
In a clip from episode 7 - titled "A Regular Guy" - we see an enthusiastic Jimmy attempt to befriend Clark Kent ahead of a softball game. However, he doesn't have much luck given the hero's reluctance to risk revealing his powers to the world.
