Seven Hours After Violet, the new project from System of a Down bassist Shavo Odadjian, have announced their self-titled debut album, out October 11th via Sumerian Records. The band also dropped another single, “Radiance.”
From the band name down through the freshly unveiled album art, Seven Hours After Violet are clearly tapping into a 2000s nu-metal aesthetic, which also translates to the music. “Radiance” traverses both heavy and melodic territory, signaled by the shifts between clean and harsh singing. The subtle electronic sampling during the instrumental breaks is a particularly nu-metal move.
Seven Hours After Violet consist of Odadjian on bass, singer Taylor Barber (Left to Suffer), guitarist Morgoth, singer-guitarist Alejandro Aranda, and drummer Josh Johnson (Winds of Plague). The band made its debut back in June with the excellent harsher “Paradise,” a Heavy Song of the Week selection.
“This album is the culmination of years of creative exploration,” remarked Odadjian in a press release.

Could an upset be brewing on Season 21 of “American Idol”? All year fans have been forecasting Iam Tongi would take home the top prize, but he may not be the sure bet we’ve assumed. This season closely resembles a similar lineup up finalists from Season 17 when 18-year old country crooner Laine Hardy took down fan favorite Alejandro Aranda, who, like Iam, had become a viral sensation since his first audition.
This time around it’s 18-year old Mississippi native Colin Stough who has progressively grown his fanbase each week, delivering honky-tonk renditions of some of music’s most popular tunes. Like Laine, he was barely a blip on viewers’ radar in early rounds, but as judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie have pointed out, his star continues to rise.

ABC’s “American Idol” named its third winner on Sunday, the singing competition’s first champion to be crowned from home due to pandemic-forced production shutdowns.

“Between Catie Turner and Alejandro Aranda, I’ve really seen a spot for me here,” says Julia Gargano, a 22-year old college student from Staten Island, New York hoping to become the next “American Idol.” “I consider myself a songwriter. At age 8 I started taking piano lessons and that’s where the singer-songwriter part of my life began. I can’t picture myself doing anything else. Now Gargano is one of seven artists in the running to become the Season 18 winner.
Gargano soared when she reached the Top 20, singing “Human” and earned a spot in the Top 11. In the “Homeward Bound” episode she took on a Billy Joel classic with “New York State of Mind” and once again felt the love from viewers who voted her into the Top 7. For her “Disney/Mother’s Day” double, Gargano performed “Beauty and the Beast” and “Sweetest Devotion” in hopes of being voted into the finale.

The “American Idol” finale on Sunday will open with the Top 7 reduced to the five finalists. We are predicting that Julia Gargano and Louis Knight will be eliminated. But which of the Top 5 — Arthur Gunn, Dillon James, Just Sam, Francisco Martin and Jonny West. — will win?
We’ve been surveying viewers all season long. In our exclusive “American Idol” winner predictions, Arthur Gunn remains out in front to take the title on May 17. But Just Sam is catching up in the final hours leading up to the live show. And Francisco Martin is making a late break for the finish line as well. But don’t count out the other Top 5 finalists in our “American Idol” season 18 rankings: Dillon James and Jonny West. Remember, Laine Hardy pulled off an upset over frontrunner Alejandro Aranda last year.

(There is one upside to performing remotely: No one was “sent home.” They were already there!)
The evening began with an emotional performance of “Home” by Season 11 winner Phillip Phillips, an on-the-nose introduction to an episode about — wait for it — home! Throughout the episode, Ryan Seacrest revealed which singers made the cut, followed by those contestants’ performances...

“American Idol” winner Laine Hardy reunited with Ryan Seacrest on April 15, albeit remotely. The season 17 champ debuted his new song, “Ground I Grew Up On,” on “Live with Kelly and Ryan.” He performed this toe-tapping number from his home in Livingston, La. He played guitar and his boyhood pal, Trent Thibodaux, accompanied him.
Laine revealed that he wrote this single based on his memories of growing up in the country, being barefoot and climbing trees. “This song has a good meaning behind it. It’s a really heartfelt song for home.” While this performance was hindered by technical difficulties, you can see a professionally produced video during this Sunday’s “American Idol.”

Simon Cowell will likely forever hold the title of everyone’s favorite “American Idol” judge, admired for his brutal honesty in accessing pop-star wannabes with their unearned bravado and screechy lack of vocal skills. No other judge could ever deliver such scathing put-downs like, “It says here you work as a wedding singer? How many ended in divorce” and “I’m not being rude, you were that bad, honestly. I mean my pen has got more charisma.”
But after Fox canceled the show in 2016, a new day dawned for “Idol” when ABC revived the popular reality show that originally launched in 2018. The tone of the show shifted a bit with a new panel of judges who all were accomplished performers in their own right. Instead focusing on trashing hopefuls, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan act more like advocates for the contestants, giving them advice, allowing them to evolve...

Have you missed partying with a Hardy this season on “American Idol”? It seemed like judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan spent more time looking for the next Alejandro Aranda, the singer-songwriter who was the runner-up on Season 17 than promoting Laine Hardy, the actual winner. In fact, Alejandro even made an appearance on the last night of Hollywood week to inspire the remaining contestants before they made their way through the solo round. Laine, however, has been Mia so far.
On the season premiere back in mid-February, host Ryan Seacrest mentioned country heart-throb Laine, who staged an amazing comeback after previously being eliminated from the show the year before by winning it all. In his voiceover, Ryan mentioned, “This bayou boy became the latest of ‘Idol’s’ rich legacy of stars with a career that has taken off.” But when it came to Alejandro, he gushed that “his...

Francisco Martin, 19, who just happens to be from San Francisco, could hardly breathe when he first faced Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan during the audition rounds of “American Idol.” He clearly had a case of the jitters while Lionel and Luke bolstered his confidence with hugs.

It’s been over 10 years since Adam Lambert famously lost the “American Idol” title to singer-songwriter Kris Allen and fans are still adamant he was robbed. In a recent poll we asked our readers which runner-up from the past 17 seasons of “Idol” most deserved to win and Lambert won by an absolute landslide. With 74% of the vote, he is by far the most beloved second-place finisher.
Finishing a distant second place in our poll with 8% of the vote was Season 2’s Clay Aiken, who lost to Ruben Studdard in the closest finale vote in “American Idol” history. Last year’s finalist Alejandro Aranda snagged 6% after losing to country singer Laine Hardy. Katharine McPhee finished in fourth place with 4% of voters who thought she should have defeated Taylor Hicks in Season 5.

ABC has announced the altered schedule for the current 2020 season of “American Idol,” in response to the deadly coronavirus pandemic that’s crippling the entertainment industry. The Hawaii-set “final showcase” episodes will now air Sunday, March 29 and Sunday, April 5 — that’s right, no more Monday episodes from here on out. The following two Sundays (April 12 and April 19) will feature brand new “American Idol: This is Me” episodes which delve deeper into the lives of the Top 20 finalists, with unseen footage and performance highlights.
Regarding the all-important “American Idol” live shows for Season 18, ABC is still “monitoring the situation and exploring multiple options within statewide guidelines.” As soon as a production plan is in place the network will share the details. Obviously the safety and health of the contestants, judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan and host Ryan Seacrest are of utmost importance in these trying times.

On the first two episodes of the 18th season of “American Idol” it seemed that judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan were hellbent to find a fully formed artist with musicianship, a great voice and a sack full of fresh original songs.

After just two episodes of the 18th season of “American Idol,” the reboot of the long-running reality show is still pretty much still a “karaoke show,” despite the ascendancy and worship of last year’s runner-up Alejandro Aranda, then 24. He arrived on the show as a fully formed artist with a catalog of wonderful self-penned songs, the ability to play guitar and piano and a truly hypnotic singing style.
Yes, that is far different from the reign of Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul. They couldn’t wait to mold and shape the talents of the winners they chose, including forcing them to release an often mediocre new song penned by others as their first single.

America voted on ABC’s updated version of “American Idol,” and chose Season 16’s Maddie Poppe and Season 17’s Laine Hardy fairly and squarely. But the show was definitely stingy promoting ukulele-strumming indie popster Maddie when she and her runner-up beau Caleb Lee Hutchinson, briefly sang a duet of “Part of Your World” from “Aladdin” on Disney night. She was supposed to give an on-air plug for her upcoming album “Whirlwind,” but the show quickly cut to a commercial instead.
Now, the premiere episode of Season 18 last Sunday started with a voiceover recap by host Ryan Seacrest reminding viewers about what went down last season when country singer Laine Hardy — who was previously eliminated from the show — staged an amazing comeback and won it all. As Ryan said, “The bayou boy became the latest of ‘Idol’s’ rich legacy of stars with a career that has taken off.”
