Webtoon Entertainment, the media company that spearheaded the mainstream embrace of webcomics, is rebranding and reorganizing the structure of its North American entertainment and intellectual property business as it aims to scale up the adaptations of its many titles.

Effective immediately, Wattpad Webtoon Studios is morphing into Webtoon Productions, with David Madden elevated to president of the production company. He was previously head of global entertainment.

Additionally, Maximilian Jo, general counsel and corporate secretary for Webtoon Entertainment, will take on a new concurrent role as vp, head of strategy for the company’s global IP business team. Meanwhile, Tina McIntyre has been named head of the newly-formed Webtoon Consumer Goods division, in a sign that the company will seek to monetize on the mountain of popular titles and IP it has created over the years.

All three will report to Webtoon Entertainment chief strategy officer and head of global Webtoon Yongsoo Kim.

Breaking the Chain: The Guard Dog Story is a tribute to the beloved character from the comic strip Mutts; the book also serves as a celebration of the strip's 30th anniversary. Guard Dog's origin story was designed to shed light on themes of animal cruelty and inspires readers to get involved with animal welfare. Patrick McDonnell's Mutts comic aims to raise awareness about caring for all animals, garnering it countless fans over the past few decades, from all walks of life.

Fans of Jim Davis' Garfield and Charles Schulz' Peanuts who aren't familiar with Patrick McDonnell's Mutts have the perfect chance to discover the long-running series, with the upcoming release of Breaking the Chain: The Guard Dog Story, celebrating three decades of the cartoon and one of its enduringly popular character, the eponymous Guard Dog.

The Super Hero's Journey is a graphic novel that aims to reacquaint readers with the history of Marvel's Silver Age heroes and the creators who brought them to life. Written by Patrick McDonnell, the graphic novel pays homage to the classic Marvel comics of the 1960s and showcases iconic characters like the Fantastic Four, Hulk, Black Panther, Captain America, and Spider-Man. The Marvel heroes of the publisher's "Silver Age" era are given an entirely new purpose in The Super Hero's Journey. But the closer audiences get to the contemporary versions of these heroes, the further away they get from the Silver Age history of Marvel Comics.

A daily strip is usually analogous to a TV show: a few are dramas, like soaps, but most are sitcoms in printed form. (And let’s remember that “sitcom” is a portmanteau of “situation” and “comedy” – it’s a comedic story set in a particular situation.) There are odder things, like The Far Side and its followers – my sense is that those are mostly single panels, and are closer to a dedicated slot for magazine single-panel style pieces by a single creator. Still “com,” but much less “sit.”

Liniers’ daily strip Macanudo is somewhere in the uncharted regions between the pure single panel and the strip sitcom. He does have a situation, but it’s a vague one – well, actually, he has, in this first book, at least four clearly recurrent situations, which range from almost normal strip set-up all the way to a couple of clicks above General Gag Premise.

Max Eigenmann and David Hayman will lead the cast of Paris Zarcilla’s debut feature Raging Grace, which will shoot in the UK this November for AMC Networks’ genre streaming platform Shudder.

The Humane Society of the United States hosted its 2020 To the Rescue! gala earlier this evening, raising over 2 million dollars to benefit the organization’s animal rescue efforts.

“Saturday Night Live’s” Emmy nominated cast member Cecily Strong hosted the event. Tony, Grammy and Emmy award-winning singer and actor Audra McDonald hosted the pre-show and performed “Go Back Home” (from the musical “Scottsboro Boys”) as well as a medley of “Children Will Listen” (from “Into the Woods”) and “You’ve Got to Be Taught” (from “South Pacific”) during the gala.

Other celebrity guests included Liev Schreiber, Mena Suvari, Rob and Marisol Thomas, Nathan Turner, Dylan Lauren, Katie Sturino, gala chair Georgina Bloomberg and Kitty Block, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States.

The Hsus has been in crisis response mode since the first days of the pandemic lockdown, helping vulnerable animals survive and delivering aid to communities where people and pets are struggling. As the nation’s biggest force for animal protection, the Hsus has been able to harness the collective power of our expertise, influence, networks and partnerships to mitigate new threats to animals as a result of Covid-19. While the organization has mobilized to prevent new suffering, the Hsus has also remained laser focused on longstanding causes of animal suffering.
