Anime series like Goblin Slayer and Record of Lodoss War are directly inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, incorporating elements from the tabletop game. Other anime series, such as The Rising of the Shield Hero and Demon Slayer, share similarities with the structure and characters of a typical D&d campaign. The crossover between anime and D&d is extensive, with many isekai shows embracing RPG tropes and mechanics, making them enjoyable for fans of the tabletop game.
Anime and Dungeons & Dragons are perhaps two of the most popular geek hobbies in existence, and the only thing that can be better for fans of both is when they overlap. Anime (particularly shonen) is known for high action and fantasy, making the appeal obvious to fans of D&d. “Deep in the unexplored reaches of the dungeon, a corpse is discovered—one that shouldn't exist. After Iarumas is resurrected, his memories of life before death are gone, and he spends his days delving into the dungeon to retrieve the bodies of dead adventurers. Can they be revived as well? Or will God reduce them to piles of ash on the altar? Either way, Iarumas collects his finder's fee.” (Yen Press)

Light novels are a popular form of literature in Japan, written with simple language, fairly short page counts, and frequent illustrations. Due to their serialized nature, light novels are a popular source for anime adaptations, with excellent examples across various genres. Some of the most popular recent anime are based on light novels, such as KonoSuba, That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime, and Goblin Slayeri, but also classics like Slayers and Records of Lodoss Wari.
Although manga is a better-known source of anime adaptations, the best anime based on light novels show that these literary works can provide an excellent foundation for anime adaptations as well. Although anime based on light novels tend to skew towards Sci Fi and Fantasy, excellent adaptations of other genres also exist. Fans of these anime should also check out the original light novels.

Goblin Slayer season 2 picks up where the first season left off, with intense violence and graphic depictions of goblin atrocities. The controversies surrounding the series' comeback are different from before, sparking debates about the show's direction and its dark content. While the second season is milder compared to the first, it still contains dark elements that some fans find unique and essential to the story, though not condoned by all.
Back for its second season, Crunchyroll's Goblin Slayer starts out where it left off at the end of its first season, namely with its intense depictions of violence, but that its fans have come to expect. It's also just as contentious as the last season – although, the controversies surrounding the series' comeback are different from the original discussions surrounding the dark fantasy anime.

My Hero Academia and Assassination Classroom are the two most frequently banned manga titles in the United States.
According to data from Pen America and the EveryLibrary Institute, at least 15 different manga series were either challenged or banned from 15 school districts in the U.S. between July 2022 and September 2023. As detailed on Comicsbeat earlier this month, Yusei Matsui's sci-fi comedy Assassination Classroom has been pulled from shelves in 10 different school districts over concerns about the series glorifying or promoting school shootings. Kohei Horikoshi's My Hero Academia has received two formal bans, with lawmakers deeming it to be inappropriately sexual for young readers. Atsushi Ohkubo's Soul Eater and Yana Toboso's Black Butler have likewise each netted two bans. The frequent censorship of these and other manga indicates a broader initiative against Japanese media in the United States.
