Overlord and Goblin Slayer are both two major names in fantasy anime, with the former being one of the most beloved modern isekai franchises. Now, a series worked on by the creators of both properties is finally receiving its own anime adaptation.

Running since 2022 in its original light novel form, Blade & Bastard is now receiving an anime, with the first teaser trailer for the show recently released. Light novels are a popular form of literature in Japan, written with simple language, fairly short page counts, and frequent illustrations. Due to their serialized nature, light novels are a popular source for anime adaptations, with excellent examples across various genres. Some of the most popular recent anime are based on light novels, such as KonoSuba, That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime, and Goblin Slayeri, but also classics like Slayers and Records of Lodoss Wari.

Although manga is a better-known source of anime adaptations, the best anime based on light novels show that these literary works can provide an excellent foundation for anime adaptations as well. According to data from Pen America and the EveryLibrary Institute, at least 15 different manga series were either challenged or banned from 15 school districts in the U.S. between July 2022 and September 2023.
