Prince Philip
The Unheard Last Words: Prince Philip’s Peaceful Passing and the Queen Elizabeth’s Missed Farewell
Prince Philip
The spring of 2021 carried a profound quietude to Windsor Castle, a silence that descended with the passing of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. After weeks of unwavering presence by his wife’s side, a vigil born of their enduring seven-decade love story, the 99-year-old Duke slipped away in his sleep on April 9th. While Queen Elizabeth II had been resolute in her desire to be with him in his final moments, the swiftness of his departure meant she did not awaken in time for a final goodbye, a poignant detail that underscores the delicate and often unseen realities of even the most public lives.

British royal family news divulges that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry may have left the hallowed palace halls, but they have not been forgotten.

That’s because they (and their antics) are still discussed and referred to by a couple of pithy nicknames. What’s better than Hank and Skank? Or Druggy and Huggy? Let’s find out!

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex Have Special Nicknames Within Palace Walls

Author Craig Brown’s new book is ‘A Voyage Around the Queen’ and drops March 13. In it he writes about the terrible traitorous twosome, saying that Meghan and Harry’s real names aren’t mentioned much in elite royal circles.

David Albert Charles Armstrong-Jones, second Earl of Snowdon is quoted in the book: “The royal family is quite good at blanking out anything unpleasant or uncomfortable.”

Sheila Hancock
‘You name it, I did it’: Sheila Hancock on comedy, age and anxiety
Sheila Hancock
You might think Dame Sheila Hancock would be taking life a little easy – no chance. She talks about her working-class roots, being lucky in love, the frustration of being passed over for serious roles – and why she’s fed up

with feeling anxious

These last few weeks, Sheila Hancock has surrendered. “I’m addicted, really,” she’s confessing. “I just can’t stop myself. I’m at it every night, without fail.” She halts, shakes her head, looks troubled, momentarily. “And everyone is fucking crying all the time. I can’t understand why for the life of me.” She leans forward, blue eyes piercing. Clocking my confusion, she grins wryly. “I’m talking about that television show, darling. What’s it called? No, don’t tell me. I’ll get there.”

Her old pal Gyles Brandreth, Hancock informs me, always makes her find the word she’s searching for when it escapes her.

Also scooping two trophies were former Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne and his sidekick and former Labour Minister turned TV presenter Ed Balls, who won interview of the year for grilling Michael Gove about his time inside the Leave campaign.

Prince Harry
Asking about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will get you this trite answer, says Royal expert
Prince Harry
It is no secret that Prince Harry and his Royal family, which includes King Charles, Prince William, and Kate Middleton, have strained relations.

The animosity between them seems so great that, as Monsters and Critics have reported, King Charles may never see his grandchildren, Prince Louis and Princess Lilibet, again.

King Charles was at Balmoral during August and reportedly made plans for the monarchy’s future without Prince Harry or Meghan, which doesn’t bode well for their relationship.

While Kate and Prince William’s children visit Balmoral this summer, no one can mention Prince Harry and Meghan’s names around the children.

Prince Harry and Meghan have a lot of work to do to repair these relationships, but there hasn’t been much progress, even in the wake of King Charles’ cancer diagnosis.

As Prince Harry and Meghan are touring the world instead of visiting with King Charles and fixing things,...

King Charles gives an update on his health as he visits Scotland
Image
King Charles has been surprisingly open about his health for a Royal family member, giving updates as he can.

Traditionally, the Royal Family is a lot more close-lipped about their health, with Queen Elizabeth not revealing how she suffered at the end of her life amid the allegations she had cancer at the end.

Vogue reports that a biography about Queen Elizabeth, Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait, by royal author Gyles Brandreth, alleges the Queen had bone marrow cancer.

The quiet distress that Queen Elizabeth went through may be the reason that both King Charles and Kate Middleton have been more open about their health.

King Charles’ battle with his prostrate has helped many other men speak up and get theirs checked, and that must be a great solace to the King.

Now, as King Charles offered condolences to the families of a fatal stabbing at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class,...

Pointless: Meet 2024’s New Guest Hosts
Image
In 2021, Pointless fans had to come to terms with the fact that change is the only constant in this crazy, crazy world when the show’s co-creator and co-host Richard Osman left to pursue other career opportunities such as being an incredibly successful crime novelist, and taking the main seat on his own game show Richard Osman’s House of Games.

Good for Richard Osman, it all seems to be very going well for him. But for Pointless?

Taking its cue from satirical current affairs show Have I Got News For You?, which settled on a revolving carousel of guest hosts when its regular host Angus Deayton was forced to step down instead of plumping for a permanent chair, Pointless has welcomed a series of co-hosts in the past couple of years.

First up were Sally Lindsay, Stephen Mangan, Lauren Laverne, Alex Brooker, Konnie Huq and Ed Gamble. Next came Andi Oliver,...

Image

She was joined by guest anchor Josie Gibson.

Willoughby began the show by addressing the controversy that has been swirling over the last few weeks, ever since Schofield, who is married with two children, admitted he had had an affair with a young “This Morning” employee.

“Firstly, are you Ok? I hope so,” Willoughby told viewers. “It feels very strange indeed sitting here without Phil. And I imagine you might be feeling a lot like I have: shaken, troubled, let down. Worried for the wellbeing on all sides of what’s been going up. And full of questions. You, me and all of us at ‘This Morning’ gave our love and support to someone who was not telling the truth, who acted in a way that they...

Pointless: Meet 2023’s New Hosts Replacing Richard Osman
Image
It takes many people to fill Richard Osman’s shoes, and not just because he wears a size 14. Back in April 2021, the TV presenter, producer and novelist announced that he was leaving his co-presenter role on Pointless to focus on his hugely successful Thursday Murder Club book series and other projects. Due to the ‘stars we see in the night sky are actually hundreds of years in the past’ nature of TV broadcast, by that point, Osman was already four months out of the job. His final episode of the regular Pointless (he’ll still appear on the celebrity editions) was filmed in December 2021 and aired in July 2022, with this touching message to Alexander Armstrong.

When Pointless returned for Series 28 in September 2022, it came with a rotating clutch of new guest-hosts sitting behind Osman’s fact-checking desk. First up was Sally Lindsay, and following her were Stephen Mangan, Lauren Laverne,...

Alison Hammond and Carol Vorderman were left in uncontrollable fits of laughter while discussing the story of Prince Harry losing his virginity.

You can read more about the biggest revelations from the book on The Independent’s live blog.

One of the most shocking stories in the book is the story of the first time Harry had sex, with the royal claiming he lost his virginity to an older woman in a field behind a “very busy pub”.

Harry refers to the incident as “a humiliating episode with an older woman who liked macho horses and who treated me like a young stallion”, adding: “I mounted her quickly, after which she spanked my ass and sent me away.

Judi Dench recalls time she accidentally shouted ‘w***er!’ at a stranger
Image
Judi Dench has reflected on some of her naughtiest moments – including the time she accidentally yelled “w***er” at a stranger.

The actor, while in conversation with broadcaster Gyles Brandreth at London’s Gielgud Theatre on Sunday night (27 November), said she thought it would be funny to shout at someone she had mistakenly identified as her friend, the impressionist Alistair McGowan, only to realise afterwards that it wasn’t him.

“I was driving along and saw who I thought was Alistair McGowan and I shouted ‘w***er’… and it was a total stranger,” she said.

The 87-year-old star added that the sight condition she suffers from – macular degeneration – has got her into trouble numerous times over the years.

In another awkward mishap, Dench said she was once on stage and thought she saw theatre director Howard Davies in the audience.

“So I got a piece of paper and folded it up and wrote on it,...

New Book Reveals The Queen ‘Knew That Her Remaining Time Was Limited’
Image
A new biography on Queen Elizabeth II will provide an unprecedented look into the late monarch’s final months.

Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait, written by former Member of Parliament Gyles Brandreth — described as a “friend and biographer of the royal family” — is being serialized in the Daily Mail ahead of its publication next month.

As the Mail reports, Brandeth addresses rumours that the Queen was suffering from a rare type of bone marrow cancer; while he neither proves nor disproves the rumours, if it were true, it “would explain her tiredness and weight loss and those ‘mobility issues’ we were often told about during the last year or so of her life,” he writes.

Paddington Sketch Writer Frank Cottrell-Boyce Says the Queen Loved Acting, Reflects on Her Majesty’s Cameo: ‘It Was a Brilliantly Timed Comic Performance’
Image
Frank Cottrell Boyce, who co-wrote two of Queen Elizabeth II’s most iconic on-screen cameos – at the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony with Daniel Craig and this year’s Jubilee sketch with Paddington Bear – said the monarch had “brilliant” comic timing and could have been an actor.

“She’s absolutely glowing in that moment,” he said of her appearance alongside Paddington in the 2-minute long sketch, which commenced her Platinum Jubilee celebrations in July. “And you’ve got to remember that that’s real acting that’s going on there. Paddington isn’t really in the room. She’s acting with an eye-line and with someone pretending to be Paddington. That’s proper acting going on. But I also think it’s true happiness.”

Cottrell Boyce made the comments during an appearance on BBC breakfast news on Friday morning, following news of the Queen’s death on Thursday. As he paid tribute to her acting skills,...

David Attenborough Remembers Prince Philip As BBC’s Funeral Coverage Gets Underway
Image
British TV icon Sir David Attenborough has remembered his friend Prince Philip at the head of the BBC’s coverage of the Duke’s funeral.

The Duke Of Edinburgh was widely praised for his appreciation of conservation and the environment, something to which broadcaster and naturalist Attenborough has devoted his life.

Attenborough said of Prince Philip: “He was right there at the beginning at a time when conservation didn’t mean much to many people. Even in the 1950s and ’60s he saw it universally. The World Wildlife Fund owed a huge amount to his presence. When he spoke about conservation, he spoke about it with passion and knowledge.”

Describing the Prince’s character, Attenborough said: “He was an extraordinary combination of being formidable and friendly. You knew he was there. He had an amazing presence. It was an extraordinary balancing act between formality and informality.”

The BBC’s first...

Why Prince Philip, 99, Said He Had "No Desire" to Reach 100
Prince Philip
As Britain and royal admirers around the world mourn the loss of Prince Philip, it seems the Duke of Edinburgh is finally at peace. Queen Elizabeth II's longtime husband and the longest-serving consort in British history died on Friday, April 9. He was 99—just two months shy of his 100th birthday—when he passed away "peacefully" at Windsor Castle, according to a statement from Buckingham Palace. While Philip's death is a great loss for the royal family and the world, it seems the former lieutenant never wanted to live long enough to become a centenarian. According to a piece published by The Telegraph in 2019, writer Gyles Brandreth recalled Philip telling him he...

Dame Judi Dench loves a feline theme
Judi Dench at an event for Indian Palace (2011)
by Murtada Elfadl

The new trend in celebrity videos is about hand washing and social distancing. But trust a revered Oscar winner to add a dash of poetry. Dame Judi Dench appears in a short clip with her friend and fellow actor Gyles Brandreth as they lather up their hands for the required 20 seconds. Instead of singing a song or reciting a famous monologue they recite the opening verses of Edward Lear’s beloved poem The Owl and the Pussy-Cat.

Ever the showwoman, Dench even begins purring and nuzzling up to Brandreth when they reach the line “What a beautiful pussy you are.” Nice homage to your current movie, Dame Judi, but perhaps not keeping with the current guidelines for social distancing.

Prince Harry
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle can’t hide their love!

Since they made their very first appearance together at the Invictus Games in September, the royal couple has held hands, rubbed each other’s backs and linked arms in public — moves almost never seen by Prince William and Kate Middleton.

The couple’s closeness was on display again during Meghan’s very first royal outing with her fiancé on Friday in Nottingham, about 125 miles north of London. They walked around holding hands and with their arms around each other as they greeted enthusiastic fans in the town center.

Happy Anniversary, Queen Elizabeth! People Celebrates Her 70-Year Marriage to Prince Philip in Special Issue
Prince Philip
For young Princess Elizabeth, it was love at first sight.

“The first time I remember meeting Philip was at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, in July 1934, just before the war. I was 13 years of age and he was 18 and a cadet,” she would later recall in a letter.

By the time he was invited to spend Christmas at Windsor Castle, Elizabeth was 17—and it was clear he shared her feelings. Their engagement was kept secret until the future monarch turned 21. And when they married in 1947, it was the first royal wedding to be broadcast on radio, heard and cheered by millions more around the globe.

Prince Philip
They have the longest royal marriage in history – and that’s because Queen Elizabeth, 91, and Prince Philip, 96, who celebrate the 70th anniversary of their engagement on July 10, have an ideal dynamic, says their biographer Gyles Brandreth.

In an essay for the new issue of Britain’s Radio Times, Brandreth, author of 2004’s Portrait of a Marriage, offers insight into the royal couple’s almost 70-year union.

Here’s what makes their remarkable marriage work:

1. He makes her laugh

With his dry wit and famously uncensored humor, Philip has long been the person who can most bring a smile to the Queen’s face.
