Emily in Paris star Ashley Park, Modern Family‘s Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Andrew Rannells braved the rain to witness the Broadway-bound production of Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends at the Ahmanson Theatre on Thursday (February 13) in Los Angeles.
Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends is a musical revue celebrating the legendary composer’s illustrious career, spanning “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” from Gypsy, a medley from Sweeney Todd,” “Somewhere” from West Side Story” and most unforgettably, “Being Alive” from Company. The show features an ensemble cast of Broadway veterans, including Bernadette Peters and Lea Salonga, delivering heartfelt renditions of Sondheim’s most beloved works. The Los Angeles run serves as a prelude to the show’s Broadway transfer, with previews set to begin on March 25 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre and an official opening on April 8.
Tickets for the Los Angeles performances, running through March 9, are available now at Center Theatre Group LA.

The stage adaptation of the book was nominated for a Tony for best musical alongside Hell’s Kitchen, Illinoise, Suffs and The Outsiders, which took home the prize. It also received nods for best book of a musical, scenic design of a musical, costume design of a musical, lighting design of a musical best direction of a musical and best choreography.
The story follows an older man reflecting on his younger adventures when he jumped a moving train unsure of where the road would take him after losing what mattered most to him. Water For Elephants, the Jessica Stone-directed musical adaptation of the bestselling Sara Gruen romantic novel, will play its final performance at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre on Sunday, December 8, having played 301 regular performances and 25 previews since February.
Though one of the better reviewed musicals of the spring 2024 season, the show didn’t quite attain the must-see status of some other spring arrivals like The Outsiders, Stereophonic, Hell’s Kitchen, The Great Gatsby or Cabaret. Still, the musical, which originally starred Grant Gustin, held its own, sometimes topping $1 million in weekly grosses, or coming close.
The figures have been slipping in recent weeks through, with Gustin ending his limited run to be replaced by Kyle Selig.
The most recent box office figures – for the week ending September 29 – were at the lower end of the Broadway roster, with just 62% of seats filled at the Imperial.

Cat Person, directed by Susanna Fogel and written by Michelle Ashford (Mayfair Witches), was one of the most buzzed-about showcases of this year's Sundance Film Festival. Stemming from the infamous short story by Kristen Roupenian, the film combines suble gender dynamic discourse from the source material with a layer of thriller tropes that takes over in the second half.
Starring Emilia Jones (who lit up Sundance and the Oscars last year with Coda) and Nicholas Braun (the butt of every joke as Cousin Greg in Succession), Cat Person follows what should be a run-of-the-mill young romance between college student Margot and vaguely older man Robert. But what starts as a meet cute in the movie theater when she works eventually devolves into a very uncomfortable situation for Margot when she realizes the man she's seeing in person is not the one she was getting to know over text.
