Gamers, the wait is finally coming to an end as Madden NFL 26 is just a few days away from release, and if there’s one thing that everyone’s talking about, it’s the player ratings. While the early reviews on Steam suggest that this is yet another recycled entry, at least the player ratings have changed for some fresh discussions.

After the success of Quarterback season 1, which gave viewers an inside look into the behind-the-scenes lives of NFL quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes, Marcus Mariota, and Kirk Cousins, Quarterback season 2 returned on July 8, 2025, featuring Joe Burrow, Jared Goff, and Cousins on his new team, the Atlanta Falcons.

Quarterback first debuted on Netflix in 2023 but did not return until 2025. Instead, Netflix's spinoff series Receiver was released in summer 2024, featuring elite wide receivers and tight ends such as Davante Adams, Amon-Ra St. Brown, George Kittle, Justin Jefferson, and Deebo Samuel.

Baseball players go bald to promote DirecTV’s streaming TV platform
Image
(Courtesy image)

Several professional Major League Baseball players are sporting domes for DirecTV this season.

The players include Los Angeles Dodgers’ Dustin May, Chicago Cubs’s Dansby Swanson and Milwaukee Brewers’ Christian Yelich, who will appear in digital and TV spots promoting DirecTV’s satellite-free options, which include low-cost, genre-based packages that deliver sports, news and entertainment channels for as little as $35 per month.

The video spots will include a rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” which has been reimagined — appropriately — to “Take Me Out to the Bald Game,” further driving the point that sports fans don’t need a DirecTV satellite dish to watch broadcast, cable and regional sports networks during the baseball season (though they can opt for a satellite dish if they prefer).

If the campaign sounds familiar, you can blame George Kittle: The San Francisco 49ers tight end kicked off the “Nothing...

When Taylor Swift’s Concert Took Unexpected Turn As She Accidentally Swallowed A Bug
Image
How did Taylor Swift deal with swallowing a bug during her concert? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

This incident happened during her Eras Tour in Milan. It was Saturday, July 13, and Swift was deep into singing “I Almost Do,” playing the piano, when things got… bugged.

She suddenly started coughing, prompting a brief pause as she told the audience she needed a moment to recover. “There are so many bugs tonight,” she said, acknowledging the pesky interruption with a smile. Swift quickly cleared her throat and got back into the groove, proving she’s not just a pro at music; she’s a pro at handling stage surprises.

This wasn’t Taylor Swift’s first encounter with unexpected stage moments. She had a similar hiccup in Chicago and London, showing that bugs clearly had a thing for her live performances. But it was the Milan moment that truly put her composure on display.

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle has parted with his trademark locks as part of a promotional campaign for pay television provider DirecTV.

The promotion involves Kittle embracing the “footbald” lifestyle by sporting a bare head — a metaphor to draw consumer awareness to the notion that DirecTV offers its traditional pay TV service without a satellite.

The campaign, called “Nothing On Your Roof,” emphasizes that DirecTV offers the same broadcast and cable channels through its streaming service, DirecTV via Internet, which complements the packages available on its flagship satellite product but without the cumbersome equipment.

“The campaign shocks fans by giving their beloved player a new show-stopping look that kicks off a hilarious visual association with the phrase, no satellite needed,” a DirecTV spokesperson told The Desk via e-mail.

‘Receiver’ Trailer: The NFL Gives Its Best Wideouts the ‘Quarterback’ Treatment in Netflix Docu-Series
Image
No major American professional sport has a longer offseason than the NFL, but the league never fails to find ways to turn professional football into a year-round entertainment product. As fans wait out the final summer months before their favorite teams suit up on the gridirons again, they can always count on new prestige documentaries to tide them over until kickoff.

For years, the summer football documentary niche was monopolized by HBO, whose annual training camp documentary “Hard Knocks” has long been beloved by sports media consumers. But Netflix got into the game in 2023 with “Quarterback,” an eight-part documentary that followed quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins, and Marcus Mariota over the course of a season playing the sport’s most important position.

The streaming giant repeats the formula with the upcoming “Receiver,” which puts five of the NFL’s top wide receivers in the spotlight. Amon-Ra St. Brown of the Detroit Lions,...

8 Takeaways From Netflix, Amazon and the Rest of Upfronts Week
Image
It used to be all about the trailers and the broadcast fall schedules. Now those are largely a thing of the past as the media sector’s upfront presentations to Madison Avenue ad buyers continue to evolve.

Following a week of spin and hard sales, here are eight central takeaways after Netflix, Amazon, NBCUniversal, Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, YouTube and Fox made their pitches.

1. The Streaming Giants Came to Play Reese Witherspoon attends as Amazon debuts Inaugural Upfront Presentation at Pier 36 on May 14, 2024 in New York City.

This year was the first time that Netflix and Amazon had physical events in New York during upfronts week (YouTube is now in year three), and they clearly tried to make an impression, gunning for a piece of the $20 billion or so in upfront commitments that used to go exclusively to traditional entertainment companies. Amazon’s event Tuesday featured “the highest concentration of...

Inside the Netflix Upfront: A Clear Message, Cameron Diaz and Lots of (Earned) Bragging
Image
A year and a half after Netflix launched an ad-supported tier, the dominant streamer made an upfront pitch — at least in person, in Manhattan — for the first time. There was bragging about the overwhelming statistics of annual hours viewed, a second appearance this week from Jamie Foxx and an open invite for deeper relationships with brands looking to cash in on Netflix’s wildly popular slate. Just ask Mindy Kaling.

“It’s [a series] about a strong woman making it in the male-dominated world of professional basketball,” the writer-producer said of her latest creation for the streamer, Running Point, “and I cannot wait to fill it with commercials about laundry detergent, anti-depression medication, cigarettes, whatever you guys wanna sell … Picture Kate Hudson smoking an e-cigarette.”

“Smoking is so cool,” added Hudson, the series’ star.

Obviously, the duo were hamming it up. (There are still laws about cigarette advertising, right?) Plus, prior to their bit,...

Netflix Upfront: Here’s What Happened At Pier 59 With Shonda Rhimes, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, George Kittle, Mindy Kaling & Kate Hudson
Image
A small group of advertisers were serenaded by Metallica’s Master of Puppets (one of those songs that Stranger Things brought to a new generation) as they walked into Netflix’s first in-person Upfront.

Held at Pier 59 Studios in New York, the event had the feeling of an immersive theater experience with a lot of black t-shirt-clad staff handing out drinks.

It comes as the streamer unveiled a number of new series and films including a new Kevin Williamson drama, a bull riding drama starring Tim McGraw and a slew of sports docs as well as more episodes of 3 Body Problem.

Shonda Rhimes kicked things off, talking up her move from ABC to Netflix, saying that she’s doing things that can’t always be done on broadcast television. “The definition of a Netflix show is one that people like to watch,” she said before introducing a sneak peek of Bridgerton’s third season,...

Netflix Scores Two NFL Christmas Day 2024 Games Under Three-Year Deal With League
Image
In Netflix’s first move into big-league sports streaming, the company has won the rights to two NFL games on Christmas Day 2024.

On Dec. 25, 2024, Netflix will be the global home of the NFL’s two Christmas Day games. In addition, the streamer will have at least one holiday game in 2025 and 2026 as part of the three-year deal. The Netflix Christmas Day games will also air on broadcast TV in the competing teams’ cities, and they’ll be available on U.S. mobile devices with NFL+.

Netflix will pay about $150 million total for the Christmas Day games this year ($75 million per game), the Wall Street Journal reported. It’s still Tbd who will produce the games; Netflix declined to comment on that detail.

The two NFL games on Netflix on Christmas Day 2024 will be Kansas City Chiefs vs. Pittsburgh Steelers — presenting the possibility that Taylor Swift will be in attendance to root on her boyfriend,...

Netflix Adds ‘Receiver’ Series with NFL Stars
Image
Poster for Netflix’s ‘Receiver’

Netflix is expanding its sports content with the new series Receiver featuring four outstanding wide receivers and one tight end. The series continues the streaming service’s partnership with the NFL and is expected to premiere this summer.

“It’s been said that there’s no more difficult position in the NFL than the quarterback,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “But throwing the pass is only half the story. Receiver follows five of the NFL’s best pass catchers throughout the 2023 season on and off the field: Davante Adams (Las Vegas Raiders), Justin Jefferson (Minnesota Vikings), George Kittle (San Francisco 49ers), Deebo Samuel (San Francisco 49ers), and Amon-Ra St. Brown (Detroit Lions).”

NFL Films, Omaha Productions, and 2Pm Productions are producing the eight-episode season. Executive producers include 2Pm Productions’ Patrick Mahomes and Jacquelyn Dahl and Omaha Productions’ Peyton Manning and Jamie Horowitz. NFL Films’ Ross Ketover,...

Netflix Drafts NFL ‘Receiver’ Series After ‘Quarterback’ Punt
Image
Netflix is moving from quarterbacks to wide receivers and tight ends in its latest NFL docuseries.

The streamer has ordered Receiver from the team behind Quarterback – NFL Films, Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions and Patrick Mahomes’ 2Pm Productions.

The series follows stars such as Las Vegas Raider Davante Adams, Minnesota Viking Justin Jefferson, San Francisco 49ers George Kittle and Deebo Samuel and Detroit Lion Amon-ra St. Brown.

It comes after Netflix last year launched Quarterback starring Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins, then of the Vikings, and Marcus Mariota, then of the Atlanta Falcons. Manning said Netflix had renewed Quarterback for a second season, but admitted that finding subjects was also tricky, hence the pivot to receivers.

The series follows this group throughout the 2023 season, which saw the 49ers beaten in the Super Bowl by the Chiefs.

The eight-part show will launch in the summer.

It is exec produced...

After Furor, Anheuser-Busch Hopes Next Bud Light Commercial Goes Down Smooth
Image
Anheuser-Busch InBev is getting ready to pour cold beer on a brewing controversy.

After getting tangled in the nation’s culture wars with a Bud Light social-media promotion that included transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney — a move that unexpectedly resulted in boycotts, diminished sales and a decision to put on leave two marketing executives who oversaw the effort — the company hopes to move on with a new ad campaign that focuses on the many summer activities that present an appropriate moment for the beer, one of the best-known beverages in the United States. “Good Times,” the sunny 1978 hit by the dance-music group Chic, plays throughout.

“We want to show up in all relevant occasions in summer — backyard barbecues, stadiums and sports venues,” says Todd Allen, an Anheuser-Busch veteran who was recently named vice president of Bud Light, in an interview. “That’s what counts and that’s what we are focused on.

Snoop Dogg Steps In At Last Second During WrestleMania
Image
Leave it to Snoop Dogg to emerge as the Most Valuable Performer of WrestleMania 39.

During a weekend that saw World Wrestling Entertainment set a two-night attendance record for their signature event, the company on the verge of being sold and Roman Reigns remaining the undisputed champion, the iconic rapper stepped up in an emergency.

Snoop Dogg was co-hosting a segment between matches on Sunday at SoFi Stadium with wrestler Mike “The Miz” Mizanin when he goaded Mizanin into an impromptu match with Shane McMahon, who made his appearance at a WWE event for the first time in 14 months. McMahon and Mizanin traded punches before McMahon tore his quad when he did a leapfrog maneuver while trying to avoid Mizanin.

Doctors checked on McMahon before he was helped out of the ring. Snoop Dogg then came back into the ring to continue the match, as he punched “The Miz” twice, then...

Tom Brady, Cheating Trump Fanatic, Ruins ‘80 for Brady’
Image
This week, Tom Brady, an NFL quarterback of some note, announced for the second time that he would be retiring from professional football. I’ll believe it when I see it, because about a year ago I wrote an aggravated goodbye-to-Brady piece, watched him return to the game, and then learned about how he only retired as part of a lengthy scheme to personally wield total control over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ football operations. He can act like he’s done but I know he will be throwing pigskin around for the Niners next year,...
