The first season of The Last of Us was a ratings blockbuster for HBO, setting records from the moment it premiered in 2023. The adaption of the postapocalyptic PlayStation game was the second-biggest series debut for network since 2010 and grew its audience significantly over its first few weeks.
The second season told a slightly different story, and in more ways than one.
The Last of Us season two was still an extremely popular and acclaimed success. But according to Nielsen, the seven-episode second season has been softer in the ratings overall, despite kicking off slightly higher. The season’s fourth and fifth episodes — the most recent episodes with third-party ratings available — had smaller audiences than any season one episodes. Measured on a week-by-week basis, Nielsen’s season two tracking goes from 805 million minutes streamed during premiere week to 937 to 827 to 738 to 745. Overall, season two has averaged 18 percent fewer viewers than the...

It was the most shocking TV character death since Ned Stark lost his head in the first season of “Game of Thrones.” In the second episode of the second season of HBO’s “The Last of Us,” Pedro Pascal’s beloved everyman Joel is brutally murdered by a new character, Abby (Kaitlyn Dever). Viewers had fallen in love with Joel, a rugged survivor of the fungal apocalypse that turns humans into ghastly zombie-like creatures, and his fatherly bond with Bella Ramsey’s Ellie, the snarky 14-year-old orphan who is immune to the cordyceps virus. Their hard-won relationship was the emotional center of the high-concept sci-fi series based on Naughty Dog’s video game of the same name. It’s what kept a significant portion of the audience coming back, week after week.

Forty years ago this month, one of the biggest movies of the 1980s arrived in theaters. A coming-of-age story of kids on a search for buried treasure, The Goonies captured audiences at the time with its whimsy and imagination — and it continues to find new fans to this day.
But the movie isn’t just about the kids. In competition for the buried treasure is the Fratelli family: the surly, face-slapping Mama Fratelli (Anne Ramsey) and her two idiot ne’er-do-well sons, Jake and Francis Fratelli (Robert Davi and Joe Patoliano). Together, the trio delivered some of the movie’s biggest laughs, while also adding a looming danger to the already harrowing tale.
Ramsey passed only a few years after The Goonies was released, but the men who played her sons have seen the movie endure into a beloved cult classic. For the film’s 40th birthday, I spoke to...

Nico Parker, the daughter of Thandiwe Newton, starred in The Last of Us before moving on to play Astrid in the How To Train Your Dragon live-action remake. But she's not likely to watch Season 2 of the show.
In the very first episode, Parker played Sarah, the daughter of Pedro Pascal's Joel Miller. She was an adorable teen who met a tragic end, shot by a soldier who thought she was infected. Her death was painful to watch, but it pales in comparison to another death on the show. In Season 2, Joel is murdered by Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) and, as Parker told Seth Meyers on Late Night recently, she just can't handle watching her onscreen dad die horribly.
“I haven’t watched the second season because the idea of seeing him die is so deeply distressing,” Parker said, before naming the stars who lead the show after Pascal's exit.

[Editor’s note: The following story contains spoilers for “The Last of Us” Season 2.]
It’s Abby’s turn now: Kaitlyn Dever is confirmed to be the lead star of “The Last of Us” Season 3, as co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann said during an Emmys FYC event attended by IndieWire.
While this is no surprise to fans of the video games, the series adaptation is now following suit. Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal previously were co-leads of the first season; Ramsey stepped into a solo leading role after Pascal’s character Joel met his demise by the hands of Dever’s Abby.
“I’ve been involved with several failed adaptations, both for ‘Uncharted’ and ‘The Last of Us,'” Druckman said. “And I think it was good to go on that journey, to end up at HBO and end up at a place that leaned into those controversial decisions, I guess. “The Last of Us” co-creator Neil Druckmann confirmed at Monday night’s FYC panel that Season 3 will focus on Kaitlyn Dever’s character, Abby.
While discussing the amount of creative freedom HBO grants the show, Druckmann said, “I can’t believe that they let us structure the series in this way, meaning like, we just ended Season 2, and Season 3 is going to be starring — spoiler alert — Kaitlyn.”
Season 2 ended with a switch in perspective from Bella Ramsey’s character, Ellie, to Abby.
Dever, who joined the panel virtually, also spoke about taking on the character of Abby, considering that she notably killed fan-favorite Joel (Pedro Pascal) at the start of Season 2. “I guess the controversy surrounding Abby was never really a concern for me, just given my first meeting with Craig and Neil and how wonderful they are and how talented they are,” she said.

At a recent Emmys FYC event celebrating the second season of The Last of Us, co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann confirmed what many fans had long speculated — Season 3 will officially shift its focus to Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby, effectively replacing Bella Ramsey’s Ellie as the central figure of the show. And if that sounds like a huge gamble, you’re not wrong, but that's what makes The Last of Us such an unexpected whirlwind of a story.
Speaking after a screening of Season 2, Episode 2, Druckmann laid out the bold path ahead, revealing: “We just ended Season 2, and Season 3 is going to be starring — spoiler alert — Kaitlyn.” Dever, who appeared virtually from Australia due to another filming commitment, played along with the announcement: “What?!”

When The Last of Us Season 2 came along, it was merciless. And the shoot wasn't easy for Isabela Merced, who was at that point still finding her way towards the stardom she has now.
The whole season focuses around one horrific act of violence... the killing of Joel (Pedro Pascal) at the hands of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever). Merced's character Dina is present but unconscious when the killing happens and Dina embarks on a quest for revenge alongside Ellie (Bella Ramsey) who is enraged beyond belief at the murder of her father figure. That made for some pretty harrowing scenes, and Merced has explained to Rob McElhenney during a panel discussion (via GoldDerby) how she handled them. One co-star helped her find her way.
“Bella gave me everything I needed in every single scene to be able to do what I did,” she said. “It wouldn’t have been half as...

“You killed America’s sweetheart.”
Those were the charges leveled at Kaitlyn Dever by moderator Rob McElhenney Monday night as the cast and creatives of The Last of Us convened for a panel discussion about the dramatic events of Season 2 and hinted at what's to come for Season 3.
Self-proclaimed megafan McElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) got straight into it by addressing the Pedro Pascal-shaped elephant in the room and the decision to kill off his character, Joel. “The first game, when I was working on it, I’m so insecure I didn’t think it would succeed. … I thought, ‘Oh this will be one and done. They’ll never let me do this again,’ and then it became very successful and there was a chance to do it again,” said cocreator and writer Neil Druckmann, who helmed both the first and second video game, which the series is based on.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is always expanding, always moving forward, always coming for our time and our wallets. Marvel always needs new blood, which is why there are always rumors about this or that actor getting chosen to play the next big superhero or villain. A new rumor from scooper MyTimeToShineHello claims that Bella Ramsey, known for playing Lady Lyanna Mormont on Game of Thrones and Ellie on The Last of Us, is being targeted for a "big Marvel role."
Is this true? Who knows? Honestly, the MCU is so big it seems like every actor alive will become a part of it eventually, so this rumor may come true by sheer force of inertia sooner or later. As for who Ramsey might play, my mind wanders towards the X-Men, a super-team we know that Marvel is going to bring in sooner or later. What about Ramsey as Kitty Pryde,...

The Last of Us’ eagerly anticipated second season — retracing the footsteps of the video game’s designers before it — gave fans a moment they’d long feared and flipped the script on what show audiences would be watching moving forward. Spoiler alert: The second episode of season two — in which Pedro Pascal’s Joel is brutally murdered as Bella Ramsey’s Ellie has to watch — sparks a new trajectory for Ramsey’s character as co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann dive deeper into the connection and trauma that drives her.
Craig Mazin talks often about adapting the story and grounding it as close to the real world, with real people, as possible. The Last of Us characters aren’t invincible; everything doesn’t always work out. “It’s important to give a character like Ellie that feeling because plot armor is real,” Mazin says. “They go through these horrible situations,...

Coming off their acclaimed turn as Ellie in the second season of HBO's The Last of Us, Bella Ramsey is reportedly being eyed for a Marvel Studios role.
Though this should only be viewed as a rumor for the time being, scooper Mttsh is claiming that Marvel is interested in signing Ramsey for a "big role" in an upcoming project. This obviously covers a lot of ground and even more potential characters, and it's entirely possible that Kevin Feige and co. simply have the highly in-demand actor on their radar.
Ramsey might well have taken a meeting (or two), but Marvel meets with a lot of talent, often without any specific role in mind.
That said, there are some major MCU movies on the horizon, and - assuming this is accurate - we can't help but wonder if Ramsey might be in line for a role in the upcoming X-Men reboot.

Bella Ramsey has been subject to a lot of hoopla in recent months, particularly stemming from their portrayal of a more grief-driven Ellie in The Last of Us Season 2. But unlike season 1, the reception to Ramsey wasn’t unanimously positive, and it mostly boils down to the writers’ approach to the story rather than Ramsey themselves, as when the material was right, they did hit it out of the park.
Now, similar to their costars, who have been in the midst of superhero buzz, it seems the Game of Thrones star’s higher calling from Marvel might be here.

How far will you go to protect what you love? For free-diving conservationist Ocean Ramsey, the answer is very, very far — or rather, deep. In Shark Whisperer, a forthcoming documentary film, Ramsey recounts how her fascination and kinship with one of the ocean’s most feared predators began when she was growing up on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Her passion for sharks, who she feels are gravely misunderstood and unfairly maligned, became her life’s work. Over 100 million sharks are killed each year, imperiling the survival of a species that is integral to a balanced marine ecosystem, and critical to a healthy Earth.

The Last of Us, HBO’s post-apocalyptic drama based on the PlayStation video game series of the same name, will return for a third season of mushroom monsters and character-driven storytelling. Like Season 2, Season 3 will be based on the game The Last of Us Part II, and tell the story from the perspective of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), the traumatized soldier who (spoiler alert) tortured and killed Joel (Pedro Pascal) in front of his adopted daughter Ellie (Bella Ramsey) early in Season 2. Abby is a playable character in the game, so the shift in perspective is an established part of the story, and an important element in establishing its themes of empathy and forgiveness.

Pedro Pascal may be one of the biggest stars in the world right now, but that hasn't stopped him from taking time out to fight for the rights of LGBTQ+ people.
The Last of Us star was among those who signed a letter objecting to the prospect of LGBTQ+ suicide prevention services via the 988 service being scrapped, as is indicated by a leaked draft of the budget of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This comes at a time when the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people across the US and UK are being put at risk.
"We are heartbroken by the proposal to eliminate federal funding for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline’s LGBTQ+ Youth Specialized Services - a move that will have devastating, life-threatening consequences for young people across the country," the letter said. "As artists, creators, and public figures, our platforms come with responsibility.

It’s confirmed that The Last of Us season three is renewed, but what is not yet known is the show’s premiere date. As the second season of The Last of Us recently wrapped up after airing its seventh (and final) episode on May 25, the anticipation for the third season is at an all-time high.
However, judging by the showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann’s words, it would be futile to wait for the release of The Last of Us Season 3 anytime soon. Read below to know more about when to expect the third season.

Ever since Bella Ramsey’s appearance in The Last of Us Season 1, fans of the video game have been bickering online about their casting. But the discussion never took such a ginormous shape, until the Season 2 finale, where the HBO show not only turned Ellie’s character into a comic relief but also sanitized her most horrific realization.
So, let’s sit down and talk about that infected elephant in the room—Ellie’s lack of emotion and bizarre character arc, even during one of the most intense scenes. Turns out, what should’ve been a chilling emotional spiral in The Last of Us Season 2, turned into a muted, almost expressionless finale. So let’s dig into it, and check out why that’s a big problem.

HBO's second season of The Last of Us adapts the hit 2020 video game The Last of Us Part II, the long-awaited sequel to the 2013 PS3 game that ended up being as divisive with fans as it was critically and financially successful. Whereas the first season of the series was tailored to adapt the entirety of the first game, the dual narrative of The Last of Us Part II warranted multiple seasons in the eyes of showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. With that decision also came numerous narrative changes from the game, some of which were especially evident in the Season 2 finale.
One of the massive changes came towards the end of the season 2 finale, in which Ellie (Bella Ramsey) makes it to the aquarium in Seattle, where she believes Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) is hiding. Instead, she finds Owen (Spencer Lord) and Mel (Ariela Barer) hiding out, where a tense confrontation ensues.

If you’ve scrolled through Instagram or TikTok lately, you might have seen reels or videos criticising The Last of Us show, specifically, Bella Ramsey, the actor playing Ellie. This time, fans online have found an Npc from The Last of Us Part 2 that they think looks exactly like Bella Ramsey.
The character is Whitney Sato, a minor Npc that you might remember as Portable Gamer Girl, because we find her playing games on a small handheld that looks like a PlayStation Portable. So, does this Npc really look like Bella Ramsey? Well, yes and no.

Few shows in recent memory have carried the emotional weight and critical expectations that The Last of Us has. Season 1 was a gut-wrenching masterpiece that stuck close to its source material while adding depth through stunning performances, most notably from Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.
But with Joel’s story ending violently and abruptly, Season 2 had one job: to explore the raw aftermath through Ellie’s descent into grief-fueled vengeance. Instead, what we got was a confusing portrayal of Ellie’s arc, one that felt inconsistent, detached, and often at odds with the traumatic foundation the season was supposedly built upon.
Ellie’s inconsistent rage undermines her character
In the Last of Us Part II video game, Ellie’s transformation is brutal, clear, and unrelenting. Consumed by grief and vengeance after watching Joel get beaten to death, Ellie sets off on a rage-fueled path that slowly strips her of her humanity.

The internet has always been a loud, opinionated place when it comes to casting decisions, especially in adaptations of video game franchises. But lately, the outrage seems less about loyalty to source material and more about who is ‘allowed’ to represent iconic and beloved characters.
The latest controversy? Rumors that actress Hunter Schafer may be playing Princess Zelda in the upcoming The Legend of Zelda live-action film, set for release in 2027. While many fans are excited, others have reacted with vitriol and suspicion.
And the backlash, no one wants to call what it really is? Bigotry.

“The Last of Us” Season 2 went out with a bang, but star Bella Ramsey wants fans thinking about their upcoming indie film projects as much as the eventual return of HBO’s zombie apocalypse. Ramsey spoke positively to IndieWire about seeing themselves grow up on screen at the prestige network, having broken out at 13 years old playing the steely Lyanna Mormont for “Game of Thrones.” Now, age 21, Ramsey is a globally recognized superstar who is ready to use their clout in other corners of the industry.
“I really hope that people will stick with me throughout stuff with ‘The Last of Us’ and beyond with all the little indie films I’m going to be doing as well,” Ramsey said. “I hope that those will get as much love as amazing shows and franchises like ‘The Last of Us’ and ‘Game of Thrones.’ I feel very grateful for the support that I’ve had.

JJ says she’s fine. She’s not. But that’s the point.
On Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3 Episode 4, grief transforms into action.
It’s a bleak hour, built on graphic horror, personal loss, and fragile control — but it’s also a defining one. JJ finds purpose. Tyler finds resolve. Voit finds the edge of his own unraveling. And through it all, we’re reminded just how high the emotional stakes remain.
(Michael Yarish/Paramount+) The Case: Medical Horror and a Father’s Delusion
The case of the week is disturbing, even by Criminal Minds standards.
It’s medical horror at its grimmest — gory, invasive, and deeply personal. There’s something especially unsettling about the use of medical expertise in the service of psychopathy.

Following a heart-breaking send-off to actor Josh Stewart’s character, Will Lamontagne Jr., things are slowly going back to normal in the eighteenth season of Criminal Minds. And by normal I mean the Bau getting busy nabbing vicious serial killers who prey on easy targets. Previously, Voit was able to remember his family ties after Rossi and Dr. Lewis decided to make him interact with Ramona Havener, the only victim of the psychopath the Bau was able to rescue in the past. While Voit’s amnesiac afflictions might be genuine, he surely has a secret ploy to get back in the game, as the fourth episode strongly hints at.

The episode opens with a night scene in Tucson, near a not-so-busy freeway. An ambulance stops by, and a paramedic, Brad Falco, attends to a homeless woman lying on the pavement.

Jesse’s abrupt death in the season-two finale of HBO’s “The Last of Us” was never up for debate, co-creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin said in a new interview, calling the moment “always sealed” and essential to Ellie and Dina’s fragile bond moving forward.
The fatal shot anchors “Convergence,” the seventh episode that aired on 25 May, closing a 50-minute installment filmed last summer in downtown Vancouver and marking the season’s pivot toward Abby’s perspective. In the scene Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) guns down Jesse (Young Mazino) as he and Ellie rush through a deserted Seattle theater, mirroring the video game’s split-second shock.
Druckmann said keeping the blow intact preserved “the emotional math” of the source material, while Mazin argued that softening it would blunt the risk already taken when Joel died earlier in the year. Both writers acknowledged the decision will send “drastic” ripples through...

Note: This story contains spoilers for “The Last of Us” Season 2, Episode 7.
When it came to adapting “The Last of Us,” co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann had many discussions about the structure of the story and what to expand upon, change or scrap.
But there was one moment in the Season 2 finale that the pair didn’t even consider touching: the sudden death of Jesse, who’s shot in the head by Abby as he and Ellie run to the theater’s lobby to rescue Tommy. The death comes shortly after Jesse has seemingly made amends with Ellie after she dragged his pregnant ex and unborn child into a war zone.
“That one, I don’t think we ever entertained an alternative,” Druckmann told TheWrap. “His fate was always sealed.”
Throughout the episode, the tension between the pair builds, starting with the former accidentally revealing the pregnancy news to the latter.

This article contains major spoilers for The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 7, "Convergence".
The Last of Us killed off Jesse moments before ending Season 2. The scene was shocking and abrupt, even for those who knew he died in the video game.
Speaking to Esquire, the actor reflected on the season finale and his experience playing The Last of Us Part II, before he was cast in the TV adaptation. "That game is so difficult. I'm used to unlimited ammo, just like guns blazing," he said. "Suddenly, I'm scrounging around for shell casings because I ran out of bullets. I'm maybe two minutes into the level before I had to change the difficulty to the easiest mode. Otherwise, I thought, 'This is going to take me three years to complete,'" he added, implying that he knew Jesse would die.
But audiences didn't expect Jesse's sudden death. It didn't even offer breathing space before the cliffhanger.

The season 2 finale of The Last of Us ended on a couple of cliffhangers. To start, Abby tracked down Ellie after Ellie had killed a few of her friends, part of her quest to avenge her father Joel, whom Abby killed at the start of the season. The cycle of revenge continued, with Abby killing Ellie's friend Jesse and wounding Joel's brother Tommy. Finally, Abby trained her gun on Ellie, and we cut to black.
We then wound the clock back a few days and woke up with Abby in a Seattle football stadium; in season 3, we'll see what she was doing while Ellie was hunting her, in a mirror of how things play out in The Last of Us video games. Essentially, we'll spend all of season 3 getting to know the "villain" of the piece.

Actors Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey play Ellie Williams and Joel Miller, father and (metaphorical) daughter in HBO's The Last of Us, and they're very close in real life too. One aspect of their off-screen relationship is Pascal's support of Ramsey's non-binary identity and ongoing support of Lgbtqia+ as a whole.

The Last of Us Season 2 has wrapped up after a divisive finale on Sunday night, but the story of Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) is far from over. The Last of Us was renewed for Season 3 mere days before the Season 2 premiere, which sparked speculation about how The Last of Us Part II was going to be split up. It’s become clearer how creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann are going to split things up now that the season is over.

The season 2 finale of The Last of Us, "Convergence," aired the other night. Ellie continued her dogged hunt for Abby, the woman who killed her father Joel at the start of the season. While fans who played The Last of Us Part II when it was first released in 2020 weren't surprised by the ending of The Last of Us Season 2 finale, there are plenty of viewers who were taken aback by the change of time and perspective following a harsh cut to black. Throughout most of Season 2, after Episode 2, Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) essentially disappeared from the series, finally appearing in the finale. Now, shifting back to Ellie's first day in Seattle from Abby's perspective will likely mean that Ramsey will be stepping down from the spotlight.

Season 2 of The Last of Us concluded Sunday night with an audience of 3.7 million cross-platform viewers in the U.S., per HBO.
This is significantly lower than the Season 2 premiere episode’s 5.3M viewers, but the network says it expects there to be significant growth after the Memorial Day holiday weekend. That potential for growth is evidenced by the fact that Season 2 is already amassing more average viewers over time than Season 1.
According to HBO, Season 2 is tallying nearly 37M global viewers per episode and growing. For context, the Season 1 premiere eventually went on to generate nearly 32M viewers in 90 days post-premiere, which is the largest audience for an HBO and Max debut season ever.

Throughout the second season of The Last of Us, Bella Ramsey’s Ellie has been forced to look at and reconcile the decisions she’s made — both the good and the bad. But during last night’s finale, that forced awareness crossed a line that will be difficult to return from. After killing two of Abby’s (Kaitlyn Dever) accomplices and close friends, Ellie had already been questioning her morality and venge-driven quest that brought her to Seattle, but when her foe came to make amends, another life was caught in the crosshairs — that of Young Mazino’s Jesse.
During the Season 2 finale, Jesse had numerous monologues during which he tried to impart some of his selflessness onto Ellie, with all of it building to the moment that many viewers and game players already knew was coming.

The Season 2 finale of The Last of Us was filled with plenty of dark twists and turns, and none more so than the arrival of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) at Ellie's (Bella Ramsey) hideout in Seattle at the end of the episode. Following the intense cliffhanger, Bella Ramsey spoke about how Ellie's drive to kill Abby, no matter the consequences, will lead the character down a path darker than they ever expected.

Ellie’s journey of revenge reaches its messiest point in The Last Of Us episode 7. Our thoughts on the finale.
Warning! Heavy spoilers for previous episodes of The Last Of Us, but none for this week’s episode!
Before we dig into the final episode of The Last Of Us season 2, let’s take a moment to reflect on what we’ve been watching for the past several weeks. The season has been controversial, surprising, not always pleasant or consistent, but it’s certainly been interesting. If you choose revenge, dig two graves. This quote has circled around stories of violence for centuries, but rarely has it felt more disturbingly appropriate than at the end of The Last of Us Season 2.
I sat through the finale with that sinking feeling in my chest, the kind that’s born not from action but from accumulation. Grief. Rage. Regret. And a creeping sense that something essential is slipping away. It’s been a short but brutally dense seven-episode season, and now we’re here: the finale titled Convergence. Or, more accurately, another beginning!
There’s a proverb that says, “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch,” and boy, did I expect so much more from this finale after the season’s slow burn buildup. Instead, it felt like we got a rushed sprint with a couple of missed steps, leaving me wondering why the storytelling didn’t...

On her third day in Seattle, Ellie (Bella Ramsey) attempts to pilot a tiny dinghy across Seattle harbor in a driving thunderstorm to get to the pier-side aquarium where she believes Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), the woman who killed her father Joel (Pedro Pascal), is located. Instead, a massive wave washes Ellie into the territory of the Seraphites, a.k.a. the Scars, a violent religious sect who string up and disembowel anyone they believe to be an enemy. That’s exactly what they almost do to Ellie, until she’s saved...
