Biography

    • After a long haul in the music business, Alec James delved into film in 1997 when he decided to major in cinema at UC San Diego. Upon graduating Magna cum Laude in 1999, he moved back to Los Angeles (where he had been living 1983-1996) to get into the business. His first job was as a Television Script Transcriber at The Transcription Company in Burbank, but his first on-set job was a one-day freebie for an indy feature called "Bikepath," where the first thing he was asked to do was to sweep the soundstage. And inexplicably, he loved it.

This led him to seek and land his first paying production job as UPM/1st AD for 3 back-to-back HD features shot in 3 weeks for action director Serge Rodnunsky's Rojak Films. It was a good boot camp for the demands of the film world, and Alec signed on to do the Sound Editing for two of the three features, while supervising the sound edit of the third. Under Rodnunsky's guidance, James learned ProTools, did the three films, and went on to explore the production department as a Production Coordinator for Hemisphere Entertainment, working on 4 more films. But he greatly preferred to be on set, actually MAKING the film.

Producer/Director Thomas O. Hobbs taught Alec boom operating for his feature Tomorrow and Tomorrow (1999) (aka Coyote Monday). Tom also introduced him to mixing, and with his background in music, Alec decided the Sound Department was a natural place for him to be. He's been mixing (and occasionally booming) features ever since, in addition to forays into Shorts, Commercials, Music Videos, Theater, and Live Events.

Alec James currently lives in Glendale, California, and recent shoots include the following:

Lemony Snicket Behind The Scenes DVD; Spiderman 2 Behind The Scenes DVD; Taco Bell Commercial; Killswitch Engage's "Rose of Sharyn" Music Video; "The Story of Bob" experimental short; and Truce (2005), an independent feature film.
