Why Elio shouldn't be ignored as another Pixar gem!
Image
The box office failure of Elio shouldn’t prevent you from enjoying one of Pixar’s better recent films!

It seems hard to believe how Pixar has suffered in the last five years. Perhaps it was a poor omen that Onward became the first movie that fell victim to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Just one week after the fantasy film opened, movie theaters started shutting down, killing its box office.

That would sadly also send Soul to Disney+ along with Luca, and a bit understandable then, with theaters still mostly closed. However, Turning Red more than deserved a theatrical release rather than going to Disney+, while Lightyear was Pixar’s first major flop.

Elemental had a rough start but grew legs to succeed, while Inside Out 2 was a hit. Sadly, it appears Pixar’s latest, Elio, isn’t going to reach those heights. The sci-fi comedy opened with a weak $30 million,...

Leaning Into Loneliness Saved ‘Elio’
Image
[Editor’s Note: This article contains spoilers for “Elio”].

Pixar’s “Elio” is the latest reminder of how hard it is for original animation to succeed theatrically, especially with the kind of personal stories being made under Pete Docter’s leadership. The storytelling struggle was so difficult, in fact, that it prompted a course correction. First-time director Adrian Molina (“Coco”) departed his alien abduction comedy-adventure to rejoin Lee Unkrich on “Coco 2” as co-director once again. But he tapped “Coco” story artist Madeline Sharafian to succeed him, trusting her to complete his pet project.

Molina was in good hands: Sharafian deeply connected with “Elio’s” theme of loneliness and the search for belonging, and contributed some wonderful early concept drawings. She even stuck up for Molina during meetings with the Brain Trust when there was pushback.

“I remember being in some of those later meetings with Adrian fighting for some of the scenes in the movie,” Sharafian told IndieWire.

Zombies, Spies & Cosmic Journeys Light Up The Box Office

Photo Credit: Universal Pictures Copyright © 2025 Universal Studios. All Rights Reserved. What a weekend at the movies! Audiences could choose from a riveting live-action adventure, a spine-tingling revival of a horror favorite, or an animated jaunt into the cosmos that, while it didn’t leave any earthly bounds, could have used some gravitational help to stay aloft. Those are the key choices, aren’t they? And dear readers, you do know there are more like them in multiplexes every week. But there are a couple of titles here that have my attention for problematic rather than positive reasons. In many viewers’ minds, Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon remains firmly established, effortlessly holding the No. 1 spot in its second weekend with an estimated $37 million domestic haul.

"A Big Reason Why We All Love Glordon": How Elio Made The Alien Sweet & Horrifying Detailed By Pixar Creatives
Image
Pixar creatives explained how Elio's most unexpectedly beloved character was designed to be both cute and terrifying. Elio follows the story of a recently orphaned 11-year-old boy fascinated with space and aliens who gets abducted and mistakenly named Earth's official ambassador in an intergalactic council. Co-directed by Turning Red's Domee Shi, the film explores connection, grief, and identity. While the movieis packed with colorful worlds and cosmic creatures, the standout character is the visually strange but extremely heart-warming companion, Glordon. Now, the team behind Eliois opening up about how the character was brought to life.

Speaking with ScreenRant's Ash Crossan, Domee Shi and producer Mary Alice Drumm described how Glordon evolved from a simple idea into one of the most beloved elements of the film. According to Drumm, the design was inspired by a tardigrade, a microscopic "water bear." The creative team also emphasized that one of...

Elio North America Box Office Day 1: Off To A Disappointing Start, Achieves An Undesirable Feat In Pixar’s History
Image
Elio North America Box Office Day 1 Update (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Pixar’s Elio’s opening-day gross is not very impressive, and it debuted at #3 in the domestic box office chart. However, since it is an original animation, it will depend on word-of-mouth, and it is too early to decide its faith. The film’s opening-day collection at the box office in North America is on the depressing side. Keep scrolling for more.

On a positive note, the animated feature received rave reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics gave it 85% and stated, “Catapulted by its theme of building self-esteem, Pixar’s latest cosmic wonder boasts a fanciful world of original creations to dazzling effect.” The audience also agrees with the critic’s rating, rather a little more, as they gave it 91% on the aggregate site. It will suffer because of Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon since they are...

Elio Will Break a Box Office Record Toy Story Has Held Onto Since 1995 (But Pixar Isn't Celebrating)
Image
Elio has just broken a major Pixar box office record. Unfortunately, it's not one that is worth celebrating.

Per Deadline, after earning $3 million in Thursday previews, Elio is looking at an opening weekend in the range of $22 million. Even if Elio manages to make a few million more than expected, it is not likely that the movie will gross more than the opening weekend of Toy Story ($29.1M), meaning that the latest Pixar movie will become the new record holder for the worst domestic debut in the history of the animation studio.Elio's box office struggles come despite receiving largely positive reviews from critics and audiences. The movie has been certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with an 85% approval rating from critics, and received an excellent A overall CinemaScore.

Elio isn't the first Pixar movie in recent memory to flirt with posting the worst opening weekend for the animation studio. Two years ago,...

Pixar's New Movie Suffers Worst Box Office Opening In Studio History
Image
Elio has broken a longstanding Pixar box office record after three decades. The new animated movie, which was directed by Domee Shi, Madeline Sharafian, and Adrian Molina, follows alien-obsessed kid Elio (Yonas Kibreab) being abducted by aliens and befriending the worm-esque Glordon (Remy Edgerly), who helps him defend the intergalactic collective known as the Communiverse when his father Lord Grigon (Brad Garrett) attempts to take it over. The Elio cast also includes Zoe Saldaña as Elio's aunt Olga, Shirley Henderson as liquid supercomputer Ooooo, and Jameela Jamil as Communiverse ambassador Questa.

Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, Elio is projected to close out its opening weekend at the domestic box office with a 3-day debut total of just over $22 million. This will place it at No. 3 on the domestic box office chart for the weekend, behind the new release horror movie 28 Years Later at No. 2 and the live-action remake How...

On-Air Film Review: Taken to the Leader in Pixar Studios ‘Elio’
Image
Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson for Wbgr-fm on June 19th, 2025, reviewing the new animated film “Elio,” another standard bearer for the Walt Disney Pictures/Pixar Studios partnership. In theaters on June 20th.

Yonas Kibreab is the voice of Elio, a precocious pre-teen science nerd who recently lost both parents. He is obsessed with contacting life in other galaxies, which perplexes his guardian Aunt Olga (Zoe Saldaña), an officer in the air force. Since Aunt Olga is working the satellite system for the military, Elio is able to sneak into the facility when an obvious close encounter occurs. His hastily typed out message gets to tan alien race, who are looking for an earth leader … as in “take me to your leader” … and assumes it’s Elio. When he is picked up by a spacecraft and taken to the peaceful planet – as...

28 Years Later Outpaces Pixar's Elio at Box Office in Thursday Previews
Image
Early box office previews of 28 Years Later and Pixar's Elio show a strong start for both films, with the new zombie horror film pulling ahead. Neither film is currently predicted to top the box office.

Variety reports that 28 Years Later opened with an impressive $5.8 million in Thursday previews, with Pixar's Elio pulling in significantly less with $3 million. The difference between the two numbers is likely due to Elio being a family film, with families typically heading to the cinemas on weekends. Current predictions show 28 Years Later likely to open in the $28-30 million range, with Elio expected to narrow the gap and gross between $25-30 million, too. The live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake is believed to still hold on to the top spot at the box office, with an estimated $40-43 million coming in on its second weekend.

28 Years Later is the third...

Elio – Review
Image
They’ve had their time in the sun, so move over live-action adaptations, and make room for a fully animated feature film (so the humans are behind the microphones). After scoring lasr Summer with the box office juggernaut Inside Out 2, the artists of Emoryville, California, are back. But, hold on to your computer monitors, this weekend’s new release is indeed “new”, as in not a sequel. Really, this is a bit of both, or all, worlds as much of this adventure begins on Earth, birthplace of the story’s focus, Elio.

When we first meet the title character, a pre-teen lad called Elio (voice of Yonas Kibreab), he’s having a tough time adjusting to life without his recently departed mother and father. But luckily, he’s been taken in by his aunt Olga (Zoe Saldana), an Air Force major stationed at a base that tracks space debris.

Elio's Cute Credits Scene Gives The Movie A Necessary Emotional Payoff
Image
As the people of Earth say: Okay, bye, I love you. This article contains spoilers for "Elio."

Pixar has been making movies since roughly the time I was born, so it's a little odd to engage with debates over whether the studio has become long in the tooth and is now struggling for relevancy in its old age. Sure, the so-called Golden Era from the late '90s to mid 2010s might be receding further and further into the rearview mirror. But many of its movies in the pandemic era have compiled solid reviews, are considered box office hits, and fill an important niche among kids that very few competitors seem interested in doing anymore. "Elio," which I reviewed quite positively for /Film here, likely won't go down as a Major Turning Point™ in any regard. It's a fun, cutesy, and emotionally engaging adventure that appeals to all the nerds...

Where to Watch ‘Elio’: Is the New Pixar Movie Streaming?
Image
Pixar is back with a new animated film, and this time the legendary studio is taking viewers back to outer space. “Elio,” Pixar’s latest offering, comes from studio veterans Adrian Molina (“Coco”) and Madeline Sharafian (“Burrow”) and “Turning Red” director Domee Shi. It is a coming-of-age adventure film about an eccentric young boy whose dream of getting abducted by aliens miraculously — and unexpectedly — comes true.

Whether or not “Elio” will be bursting with the same Pixar magic present in many of the studio’s past hits remains to be seen. For now, here is how, when and where you can watch “Elio.”

When does “Elio” come out?

Disney is set to release “Elio” on Friday, June 20.

Is “Elio” streaming?

Pixar’s straight-to-streaming era is over for the time being. “Elio” is a theatrical release, which means it will only be available to see in movie theaters for the first...

‘Elio’ Is Pixar’s ‘E.T.’, Played in Reverse
Image
Pixar has a knack for coming up with good opening salvos, and Elio, the animation company’s latest movie, kicks off with a strong one. When we meet the 11-year-old kid, voiced by Yonas Kibreab, who gives this sci-fi dramedy its title, he’s nestled under a commissary table and in state of mourning. His parents have died. His aunt, Olga (Zoe Saldaña), has taken over the role of caretaker for the boy. She’s a career military woman who’s given up dreams of training to become an astronaut...

Elio Review: Pixar’s latest movie is another misfire
Image
Plot: An eleven-year-old boy obsessed with aliens accidentally makes contact and is beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization consisting of different alien species from across the galaxy. Passing himself off as the ruler of Earth, he accidentally becomes embroiled in a conflict that could lead to an interplanetary war.

Review: As has become increasingly common with Pixar movies lately, Elio has the feel of a film that’s been reworked endlessly. Originally set to be directed by Adrian Molina, who helmed Coco, he was replaced at some point by directors Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi (Turning Red), to the point that the finished film bears little resemblance to the well-received teaser trailer that came out two years ago, which featured an introspective, relatable, and sweet-natured lead character in the titular Elio, as voiced by Yonas Kibreab.

Instead, Elio, as presented in the film, is another off-the-wall, overly comic kid character,...

Movie Review: Elio
Image
The latest feature from Pixar, entitled Elio, is the story of a young boy (Yonas Kibreab) who is obsessed with space and travelling to distant worlds. Elio lives with his Aunt Olga (Zoe Saldaña), following the death of his parents some years earlier. Olga was a rising star in the space program until she had to put her career on hold to care for Elio. Now, Elio and Olga feel simultaneously frustrated with what each of their lives have become. Elio, for his part, dreams of getting away to somehow live life on his own terms. So, when the opportunity to leave the confines of Earth to travel the stars presents itself, he is all too eager to leave the only family he has left behind and head for the stars.

What follows is a heart-warming tale of someone coming to the realization that what they have may not be...

‘Elio’ Review: A Bright, Fun, and Visually Stunning Space Adventure
Image
A scene from Disney and Pixar’s ‘Elio’ (Photo © 2025 Disney/Pixar)

Is there life out in space amongst the stars? That’s the question humans on earth have been asking for thousands of years. It’s also on little Elio’s mind in Pixar’s animated adventure Elio.

Not having any friends and being obsessed with space and aliens, young Elio (voiced by Yonas Kibreab) is desperate to be abducted by aliens and start a new life off of planet Earth and away from his aunt and guardian, Olga. Olga’s an Air Force officer who he believes would be happier without him.

After numerous botched attempts to be abducted, including lying on the beach in a big drawn circle with the words “Aliens… Abduct Me!” Elio sneaks into a top-secret meeting being held by Olga. When it ends, he records a message: “If any aliens are listening, please come and get me.

Disney and Pixar on Their Way to Another Hit as Elio Debuts With Enthusiastic Reviews
Image
Disney and Pixar have a new project coming out: Elio. After the massive success the two had last year with Inside Out 2, the new animation comes under a lot of pressure.

However, it looks like Elio can handle it. The original story follows the titular 11-year-old boy into outer space, where he is searching for a bigger meaning as he forms new bonds with alien lifeforms. Ahead of its release in theaters on June 20, Elio debuted with an enthusiastic 83% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes. One day ahead of its release on Friday, its scores were even more delightful and in line with other Pixar hits: it officially received the Certified Fresh badge, alongside an 88% approval score out of 90 reviews.

Elio is Pixar's 29th film, and is on its way to becoming a new hit for the studio, as well as its parent company, Disney. "For centuries, people have called...

New Pixar Movie Debuts With One of the Highest Rotten Tomatoes Scores for Recent Disney Animated Movies
Image
It’s been a checkered start to the year with live-action releases of Snow White and Lilo & Stitch, but the next animated movie up on the slate for Disney’s Pixar company is picking up steam ahead of its release this weekend. Elio will touch down in theaters everywhere this Friday, but the review embargo for the film lifted yesterday, and early opinions for the film began pouring in. Elio has now registered enough reviews to be given an 83% from critics on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, a score which will be given the “certified fresh” label if it holds up. An audience score won’t be given until the film is playing in theaters, but this critics’ score is higher than Elemental and Lightyear, even if it does fall behind Inside Out 2.

Elio follows the titular character of the same name, who is a space fanatic with an active imagination.

‘Elio’ reviews knock Pixar for ‘repeating itself’ with ‘forgettable’ space adventure
Image
Pixar is once again returning to the stars for its latest family-friendly adventure, Elio, which stars Oscar winner Zoe Saldaña, Yonas Kibreab, Remy Edgerly, and Brad Garrett. But according to the reviews that have just gone online, the cosmos do not seem to be aligned for the studio's new offering.

In theaters on Friday, Elio tells the story of a young boy (Kibreab), who develops a fascination with outer space and yearns to be abducted by aliens in the wake of his parents' deaths in an accident. The set-up offers that signature Pixar blend of whimsy and tragedy, but according to Vanity Fair's Richard Lawson, Elio may have stuck too close to the recipe.

"I do wonder if Pixar—long the standard bearer of American animation — may be reaching the bottom of its thematic barrel," he writes. "The studio’s latest film, Elio, has all the lush and lively imagery one expects from the company.

New Disney Pixar Movie Debuts With Solid Rotten Tomatoes Score - But Where Does It Rank Among The Classics?
Image
Pixar is a renowned animation studio known for revolutionizing animated movies with groundbreaking technology, along with stories that blend humor and emotion for young audiences and adults. The first Pixar movie was Toy Story in 1995, the first fully computer-animated feature. The studio followed that up by creating more animated classics like A Bug's Life, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Cars. After being acquired by Disney in 2006, Pixar continued producing hits, such as Ratatouille, Wall-e, Up, Inside Out, and many more.

However, in recent years, Pixar has experienced a series of disappointments. After Onward underperformed at the box office due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Soul, Luca, and Turning Red were all sent straight to streaming on Disney+. Lightyear was the first Pixar movie to be released in theaters since Onward, and became a big box-office bomb. However, after Elemental became a sleeper hit, Inside Out 2 went on to...

‘Elio’ Review: Princes of the Universe
Image
There’s a line in Interstellar that’s become something of an ill omen: “We used to look up at the sky and wonder at our place in the stars. Now, we just look down and worry about our place in the dirt.” Because even though films continue to lead us into space, it’s rare that you get one like Pixar’s Elio where characters think of the cosmos in terms of infinite possibility and connection rather than a place where landmark-destroying alien threats come from.

It’s powerful seeing the newly orphaned Elio (Yonas Kibreab) lie down in a NASA museum and hear about the Voyager spacecraft taking the loneliest journey of all humankind’s creations while bathed in the light of the stars. Elio dreams in the wake of loss, and between his sheer, uncontrollable weirdness and the aggravation of being constantly dragged back to Earth by...

‘Elio’ Review: Pixar’s Colorful Sci-Fi Film Celebrates Weird Kids, but Only Allegorically
Image
There’s a moment in “Elio” where an eccentric human child tells an alien clone to impersonate him and just “be normal.” It makes sense in the context of the plot, but also for Pixar in general. The animated studio that brought you “Inside Out” and “Elemental” is, according to its own employees, now only allowed to talk about being different in fictional ways that don’t make audiences who reject actually different people uncomfortable. Disney seems to believe Pixar’s target audience is the villains from Pixar movies and that there’s no place for queer people in the worlds they create, literally minimizing or erasing their non-allegorical existence from films like “Inside Out 2” and the TV series “Win or Lose.”

So it makes sense that the title character in “Elio” wants out of this oppressive environment where he’s treated like a liability and yearns to be abducted by aliens.

Elio
Image
Pixar has had a few creative wobbles over the past few years. Its biggest successes recently have been sequels: Inside Out 2 broke box-office records while their last original film, Elemental, hardly set the world alight. Thank goodness, then, for Elio. Helmed by a trio of co-directors — Domee Shi (Turning Red), Madeline Sharafian and Adrian Molina (Coco) — it’s a vivid, sweet but not saccharine voyage of discovery that proves Pixar is still capable of imagination, even if it still has plenty more sequels in the pipeline.

We actually start with some formulaic narrative beats, with 11-year-old Elio Solis (newcomer Yonas Kibreab) grieving the loss of his parents and now living with his well-meaning but overworked aunt Olga (Zoe Saldaña) on an Air Force base. Of course, many of the very best children’s stories follow orphans’ search for belonging, but another of Pixar’s blatant attempts to yank on...

‘Elio’ Review: A Lonely Boy Makes Friends With an Alien in Emotionally Grounded Outer-Space Cartoon
Image
Thirty years ago, Pixar rocketed into the popular imagination with Buzz Lightyear’s much-quoted motto, “To infinity and beyond!” Twenty-eight hit animated movies later, infinity comes for Elio Solís, an emotionally complicated 11-year-old orphan who feels so alone on Earth that he looks to the cosmos for company. The story of a kid who wants to be abducted by aliens — and what happens when he gets his wish — “Elio” is right at home in the Pixar catalog, but lacks those undeniable signs of intelligent life that set the studio’s best work apart.

Perhaps that’s asking too much, considering that “Elio” is a mature work of family entertainment, engineered to impart a lesson that any child who feels unloved, mistreated or out of place would surely benefit from hearing — namely, you are not alone. To make absolutely certain that no one misses that point, the script circles around to...

‘Elio’ Review: Pixar’s Sweet, Safe Space Adventure Isn’t Exactly Out of This World
Image
In Pixar’s Elio, the eponymous young hero (voiced by Yonas Kibreab) gets his wish of being abducted by aliens, and is promptly treated to all manner of otherworldly sights.

The Communiverse, an airy floating hub for the galaxy’s best and brightest, overflows with extraterrestrials of every imaginable shape, color, texture and method of communication (one spits out balls rather than speak words). They have access to amazing technologies like a “liquid supercomputer” that’s basically a floating Siri on steroids, a machine that can spit out clones, a Universal Users Manual that knows the meaning of life. For Elio, outer space is everything that cold, drab Earth isn’t, and it’s no wonder he’s loath to return home.

If only the film itself were half so, well, alien. Instead, watching from our humble blue marble, Elio feels just a tad too familiar in its sights and...

Pixar Animation Studios offered an exclusive first look at its hottest upcoming features — including Hoppers and Toy Story 5 — and announced a brand-new original production, Gatto, during a studio presentation on Friday at the Annecy international animation film festival as part of a broader showcase that also included extensive footage from Pixar’s 2025 release Elio.

Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter took the stage to present behind-the-scenes material from Toy Story 5, revealing early footage and confirming the return of franchise veterans Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cussack. Directed by Andrew Stanton and McKenna Harris and produced by Jessica Choi, the fifth installment in Pixar’s flagship franchise is scheduled for release on June 19, 2026.

Docter shared that the new film will explore the challenges faced by the toys in a digital-first world. “It’s Toy meets Tech,” he said, outlining the film’s plot, which will see the original...

First Reactions Call Pixar's 'Elio' the "Biggest Surprise of the Summer"
Image
It just wouldn’t be summer without a heartwarming Pixar movie that manages to evoke joy in our hearts while at the same time making us cry. Last year it was Inside Out 2, and this year that film seems to be Elio. Based on early reactions, it looks as if the new sci-fi adventure ticks all the right boxes for the studio and fans, as it's being hailed as the biggest surprise of the season. Holding its world premiere at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood, Los Angeles recently, folks took to social media to express just how much they loved it for not only being a fantastic film, but for bringing back a Pixar tradition.

"Elio starts with a boy struggling with loneliness, but it unfolds into a surprisingly tender story of longing, self-discovery, and finding connection in the most unexpected corners of the universe, said critic Michael J. Lee on X,...

Jameela Jamil Says ‘Elio’ Is a Reminder Young People Are “Capable of Great Things” While “the World Is a Dumpster Fire”
Image
Pixar’s Elio — following a young space-loving boy who finds himself beamed up for an intergalactic adventure — premiered in Los Angeles on Tuesday, with the current events of the city on the team’s minds.

The titular Elio is Pixar’s first Mexican-Dominican lead character, coming at a time when L.A. is at the center of immigration protests and the Latino community is being particularly targeted by Ice raids.

Madeline Sharafian, who directed the film alongside Domee Shi, told The Hollywood Reporter on the carpet, “I think right now in particular I think a lot of people in the world can relate to where Elio is at the beginning of the film, where he has a very pessimistic view of Earth, which I think sometimes we’re all feeling.” As he goes on a journey through space and makes friends with aliens, she continued, “He changes his view of Earth a little bit,...

Pixar's Incredibles 3 Will Make Franchise History (But Not in a Way Fans Will Like)
Image
Incredibles 3 is making franchise history, although it's in a way that might not please too many Pixar fans. The upcoming threequel will be the first Incredibles movie not to be directed by Brad Bird.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Bird is no longer directing Incredibles 3, with Pixar tapping Elemental director Peter Sohn as his replacement. While an official reason hasn't been given yet as to why Bird isn't directing the threequel anymore, the filmmaker is currently in pre-production on Skydance's Ray Gunn, which could mean that scheduling conflicts prevented him from being able to direct both movies. At this time, Bird remains involved in Incredibles 3 as a screenwriter and producer.

Bird has been the main creative force behind the Pixar franchise, having come up with the idea for the superhero family in the early 1990s. He wrote and directed both the original movie, 2004's The Incredibles, and its sequel,...

Elio's Chipper Space Slug Glordon Is A New Contender For Pixar's Cutest Character
Image
Boo from "Monsters Inc.," Baby Dory from "Finding Dory," Jack-Jack from "The Incredibles," Dot from "A Bug's Life," Squirt from "Finding Nemo," the titular "Wall-e" -- these are just some of the cutest characters to come from Pixar Animation. But when "Elio" arrives in theaters this summer, we'll be adding Glordon the chipper space slug to this list.

Pixar's "Elio" follows the titular 11-year old boy (Yonas Kibreab), who has always felt a little out of place on Earth. After his parents died when he was young, he was placed in the care of his Aunt Olga (Zoe Saldaña), an Air Force Major who put her astronaut aspirations on hold to care for her nephew. Though she loves him to the moon and back, Elio still feels like a burden, and his only reprieve is the hope that one day he can be abducted by aliens and find a...

Pixar's Elio Footage Reaction: Amblin And Galaxy Quest Combine For A Delightful Sci-Fi Adventure
Image
Pixar's new movie "Elio" is taking audiences and the movie's titular character to space for an adventure the likes of which the animation studio has never embarked upon before. Sure, we've been to space in the beloved "Wall-e," and we've even hit lightspeed with a certain space ranger in the less celebrated "Lightyear," but "Elio" is taking us on an adventure that is completely removed from the comforts of life on Earth, bringing us into a vibrant otherworldly space station known as the Communiverse.

In early May, /Film was invited to Pixar Animation's campus in Emeryville, California to watch new footage from "Elio" and learn about the making of their latest film. Directors Domee Shi ("Turning Red") and Madeline Sharafian (story lead on "Turning Red" and "Coco") revealed a selection of scenes totaling almost 25 minutes of footage that gave us an idea of the story they were trying to tell,...

Final Trailer for Pixar's New Movie Features a Sneaky Inside Out Easter Egg
Image
Pixar has released a final trailer for its next animated movie, Elio. Eagle-eyed fans will notice that the first few seconds of the final trailer feature a sneaky Inside Out Easter egg.

The final Elio trailer begins with the title character's Aunt Olga (voiced by Oscar-winner Zoe Saldaña) flipping through a parenting book called Parenting Your Spirited Child. She then shows Elio a page from the book featuring several different expressions, asking her nephew to pick the one that best represents how he is feeling. Inside Out fans will notice that several of the feelings are color-coded to match their corresponding emotions from the 2015 movie: Happy/Yellow for Joy, Sad/Blue for Sadness, Angry/Red for Anger. While the remaining main Inside Out emotions — Disgust, Fear, and Anxiety, the latter of whom debuted in Inside Out 2 — don't have exact one-for-one matches, Sick/Green, Stressed/Purple, and Overwhelmed/Orange are pretty close counterparts,...

‘Elio’ Sneak Peek: 5 Things We Learned About Pixar’s First Intergalactic Buddy Comedy
Image
“Elio” (opening theatrically June 20), Pixar’s first intergalactic buddy comedy, takes an animated leap into space with imaginative design and visual splendor, utilizing a mixture of old and new techniques. The footage screened at Pixar was funny and, in one tender scene, very moving.

It’s about 11-year-old orphan Elio (Yonas Kibreab), who’s obsessed with getting abducted by aliens and finally gets his wish when he’s mistaken for Earth’s leader. Elio beams up to the candy-colored interplanetary space station of peace and security called the Communiverse, where he bonds with worm-like alien Glordon (Remy Edgerly), who’s just as lost and friendless. That is, until Elio’s found out and sent back home to the Air Force base where he lives with his stressed-out aunt Olga (Oscar winner Zoe Saldaña).

“Elio” is very much a post-covid film about loneliness and the search for belonging that afflicts many children.
