Her father was a prominent anti-apartheid campaigner in South Africa in the 1960s. He left there at 24 hours' notice to avoid being arrested and jailed by the pro-apartheid government.

Her father is from an Ashkenazi Jewish family and her mother is of Scottish, English, and Afrikaner descent. Her paternal grandfather was born in Slonim, Hrodna Province, Belarus, and her maternal grandmother was born at Falconcliff, Royal Cresent, Dunoon, Scotland.
