Back in 2019, it was announced that Ben Wheatley would be writing, directing, and executive producing Generation Z, a “hilarious, frightening, and political” series that would consist of six hour-long episodes that would “mix flesh-eating zombies into a story that satirizes how Brexit has divided the UK.” That project didn’t make it into production when it was originally supposed to because of the pandemic shutdown… but after making Meg 2: The Trench (you can read our review at This Link and check out our interview with the filmmaker Here), Wheatley circled back around to Generation Z. The show started airing on Channel 4 last October… and now, it has been confirmed that it will not get a second season.

Amanda Seyfried is singing the praises of just how “crazy” — in a good way — Mona Fastvold’s upcoming “Ann Lee” musical is. Seyfried stars in the title role of the historical film, which centers on the religious leader Ann Lee, who founded the Shaker Movement in the late 1770s. Lee’s followers deemed her the female Jesus Christ, and her worshippers prayed through song and dance, hence her story getting the musical biopic treatment.
The film is co-written by Fastvold and her “The Brutalist” collaborator and real-life partner Brady Corbet. The pair are currently nominated for the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for their work on the film, which is also nominated for Best Picture and in a slew of other categories.
Seyfried told Vanity Fair that shooting Fastvold and Corbet’s secret indie film after wrapping the upcoming Peacock limited series “Long Bright River,” was tough. “I went to hell and back,...

With just a week to go until Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, ranking quite highly on our best films of 2024, arrives in theaters, we’re getting new details on what the filmmaker has up next. Although it took six years for him to get his latest off the ground, thankfully it doesn’t look like the wait will be as long for his next project.
First up, he’s co-written Ann Lee with his partner and collaborator Mona Fastvold, who directed the film, which has already wrapped production. Deadline reports the musical stars Amanda Seyfried, Thomasin McKenzie, Lewis Pullman, Christopher Abbott, Tim Blake Nelson, Stacy Martin, Matthew Beard, Scott Handy, Viola Prettejohn, David Cale, and Jamie Bogyo. With a score by The Brutalist composer Daniel Blumberg, the “epic fable” follows the “founding leader of the Shaker Movement, who was proclaimed by her followers as the female Christ and went on...

After missing out on playing Glinda in Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked,” Amanda Seyfried is teaming up with the makers of another buzzy 2024 film for a musical: “The Brutalist” co-writer Mona Fastvold directs the musical “Ann Lee,” which she wrote with “Brutalist” co-writer and director, and her partner, Brady Corbet.
Seyfried stars in the title role in the historical film, which shot in Hungary right after “The Brutalist” and features original songs by Golden Globe-nominated “The Brutalist” composer Daniel Blumberg. Choreography comes from Celia Rowlson Hall, the dancer who played the adult Sophie in “Aftersun.” The secret indie film has already wrapped production and is looking for a 2025 premiere, with sales and distribution yet to be set. Deadline first reported the news. IndieWire confirmed the project.

Exclusive: The team behind seven-time Golden Globe nominee The Brutalist have been quietly working on a starry musical called Ann Lee, which has now wrapped, with Oscar nominee Amanda Seyfried (Mank) in the lead role.
Mona Fastvold (The World To Come), Golden Globe-nominated co-writer of The Brutalist, serves as director, co-screenwriter, and producer. Venice Silver Lion winner Brady Corbet co-wrote with his Brutalist collaborator and partner, Fastvold. Golden Globe-nominated composer Daniel Blumberg (The Brutalist) wrote and produced the original music.
The film, inspired by real events, is described to us as “an epic fable” about religious leader Ann Lee, the founding leader of the Shaker Movement, who was proclaimed by her followers as the female Christ and went on to build one of the largest utopian societies in American history. Lee–one of the rare female religious heads at the time– and her followers worshipped through exuberant song and dance.

Kill List Ben Wheatley returns to the small screen this month with Channel 4 zombie comedy series, Generation Z. Here’s a trailer:
Kill List director Ben Wheatley is about to television with this autumn’s Generation Z, which Wheatley has written and directed for Channel 4.
According to the British Comedy Guide, the series is a horror satire which pits a group of small-town teenagers (the gen-z of the title) against a horde of toxin-infected, rabid pensioners. It’s a little bit like Rabid Grannies, then, but with a distinctly political, post-austerity, post hope-for-the-future spin.
As the synopsis points out, it’s about “the increasingly stark divisions between generations,” and depicts “a modern Britain at war with itself. Sounds good!
The cast is itself a platter of multi-generational comedy talent. Elder states-people of telly Sue Johnston (The Royle Family), Anita Dobson (EastEnders) and Robert Lindsay (Citizen Smith) are joined by...

Sarah Snook’s 2023 Best Drama Actress Emmy victory specifically came for her 23-minute and 40-second performance in the “Tailgate Party” episode of “Succession.” Whereas she ranked second in terms of physical screen time in her own lineup behind only Keri Russell, the 2024 group includes five nominees whose submitted performances outpace hers by up to 18 minutes, with two even surpassing Russell’s.
The six current drama actress contenders asked voters to consider their work in episodes in which they appear for an average of 28 minutes and 28 seconds (or 47.03% of the total running time). This data was calculated using a simple definition of stand-alone screen time, which is any time a given performer can be seen on screen or heard off screen. Contiguous moments of silent and non-visible scene time were not counted.

“The Crown” concluded its six-season run in December 2023 with Imelda Staunton being the third and final actress to portray the iconic role of Queen Elizabeth II. The English actress took over the gig in Seasons 5 and 6, following Olivia Colman in Seasons 3 and 4, and Claire Foy in Seasons 1 and 2. Both Colman and Foy won Emmy Awards in the Best Drama Actress category for their second seasons as leads, so now Staunton is hoping to follow directly in their Emmy-winning footsteps. (Foy also claimed a guest actress trophy for appearing in a flashback during the fourth season.)
Season 6 of “The Crown” was split into two volumes on Netflix, with the first part focusing on the death of Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) in 1997, and the second part detailing the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth in 2002 and the wedding of Prince Charles (Dominic West) and Camilla Parker Bowles (Olivia Williams) in 2005.

“The Crown doesn’t ask existential questions of itself,” Queen Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton) is told when she contemplates modernizing the British monarchy during a time of particularly frigid public opinion. “It suggests a loss of confidence. It’s putting blood in the water.” But if the Crown won’t pose those inquiries, Peter Morgan’s The Crown often has.
Since 2016, the Netflix drama has probed the British royal family from an array of angles, and in doing so asked us to consider what the monarchy is worth, what the monarchy is for, what the monarchy has cost the people at its center and the people around them and the nation they purport to serve — all conversations that feel, if anything, even more relevant in 2023. In its final six episodes, however, The Crown proves less interested in interrogating the status quo than admiring it. It surely makes for a sweeter finish.

The Crown is a Netflix series that follows the life of Queen Elizabeth II and her royal family, spanning multiple generations and years. Queen Elizabeth II is played by different actresses throughout the series to cover different stages of her life, starting from her early twenties to her late seventies. The show features numerous members of the royal family, including Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward, as well as their marriages and children.
The Crown shows how convoluted Queen Elizabeth II's royal family tree is, and understanding their connections is key to appreciating the show. The Netflix historical drama series is loosely based on the true events of Queen Elizabeth II's life during her reign, beginning in 1947 and expected to end in 2005. In The Crown, a single episode can span several years, allowing for multiple generations of the royal family to be portrayed onscreen and have their stories told.

Kill List, Free Fire, and High-Rise director Ben Wheatley announced plans for the Brexit zombie series “Generation Z” for UK’s Channel 4 back in 2019. UK broadcaster Channel 4 has unveiled first look images at the six-part series, along with its cast.

The plot for the six-part series: “In a small British town, tensions come to a head when a mysterious military convoy crashes outside the Sunnywise Retirement Home. The vehicles were carrying a toxic substance, which, as a result of the crash, leaks into the local environment and infects the residents of the retirement community. Ben Wheatley’s zombie series Generation Z is building its bite.
UK broadcaster Channel 4 has unveiled a first look at the six-part series, which is currently being filmed in Wales by The Forge, the outfit that produced Help and Roadkill.

The Crown is reportedly set to bring back every actor who has played Queen Elizabeth II so far. The series, which premiered on Netflix, follows the real-life monarch through various stages of her life, recasting the role after a significant time jump every two seasons. The series is ending with season 5 (which aired in November 2022) and season 6 (which returns later this year), following her life - and that of the royal family - through the 1990s and early 2000s with Imelda Staunton in the lead role.
According to The Sun, in addition to featuring Staunton in the main cast, The Crown season 6 will bring back both previous actors for special scenes. Reportedly, new scenes have already been shot with Claire Foy (seasons 1 and 2) and Olivia Colman (seasons 3 and 4). The series has also reportedly cast Viola Prettejohn as an even younger Queen Elizabeth II in her pre-coronation period during World War II.

Makers of The Crown have reportedly decided to pay tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II in the hit drama’s final season.
The Sun newspaper – which has previously been on the money with its scoops as to which actresses will play the monarch – suggests that producers have decided to recruit all three actresses – Claire Foy, Olivia Colman and Imelda Staunton – who have earlier starred in the role for a series of special scenes.
Additionally, it reports that a brand new actress, Viola Prettejohn, will join the cast to play the younger Elizabeth, when still a princess, during World War II, before her coronation in 1953.

FX has decided to ignore the advice of its own series title and let go of the TV adaptation of "Never Let Me Go" before the show could ever air or even go into production. We first reported last May that the network was developing a new adaptation of Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro's novel for television, with director Mark Romanek ("One Hour Photo") having previously adapted the book into a 2010 film starring Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley, and Andrew Garfield. Originally meant to stream on Hulu, the "Never Let Me Go" series received the official green light from FX last October, but now, it is no longer happening, according to Variety.
Viola Prettejohn ("The Nevers") was set to star in "Never Let Me Go" as Thora, described in the series logline as "a rebellious teenage clone who escapes from the boarding school where she and her fellow clones are kept hidden from society.

HBO and HBO Max are becoming very unpredictable.
Ever since the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, there have been plenty of controversial decisions from the higher-ups at the company.
If you thought Minx was the only cancellation this week, then we have bad news.
HBO Max has split up with Love Life, canceling the romantic anthology after two seasons.
The writing had been on the wall with the lack of updates following the Season 2 finale back in November 2021.
The first season was headlined by Anna Kendrick, while the second had William Jackson Harper at the forefront.
The series has also been pulled from HBO Max, meaning there's a chance fans will never get to rewatch the series again.
Sam Boyd, the creator and co-showrunner, reflected on the cancellation on Twitter.

FX has greenlit “Never Let Me Go,” a drama series inspired by Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2005 science fiction novel of the same name.
The thriller series will follow Thora (Viola Prettejohn), a rebellious teenage clone who escapes from the boarding school where she and her fellow clones are kept hidden from society. As she starts living undercover in the outside world, she unwittingly sets in motion events that will spark a revolution and test the boundaries of what it means to be human.
Along with Prettejohn, the cast includes Tracey Ullman, Kelly Macdonald, Aiysha Hart, Spike Fearn, Shaniqua Okwok, Gary Beadle, Kwami Odoom, Susan Brown, Keira Chanse and Edward Holcroft.
This is the second screen adaptation of the book, as a movie starring Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield came out in 2010 from Searchlight Pictures. The film was written by Alex Garland, directed by Mark Romanek and produced by Andrew Macdonald Allon and Reich.
