One of Instagram‘s simplest products is becoming a major area of emphasis. The app’s direct messages have received approximately 20 new features in recent months, and Instagram Head Adam Mosseri recently said his team is “doubling down” on DMs in 2025.
Business Insider‘s catalog of updates shows a timeline that begins last March, when Instagram added new editing tools (like pinned messages) and announced cosmetic updates (e.g. new chat themes) for its DMs. A steady stream of innovations arrived in the ensuing months; Instagram messages added everything from longer voice memos to AI-powered chats.
Despite Instagram’s overt focus on photos and short-form videos, its DMs have become a cultural touchstone and a primary form of communication for the app’s users. Mosseri acknowledged the format’s staying power last year, when he suggested that Instagram might move its Dm icon to make it more prominent on the app’s home screen.

Reels has become a standout format for Meta, bringing in more than 200 billion views per day across Instagram and Facebook. As Meta looks for more ways to emphasize its version of TikTok‘s vertical videos, it is considering whether to launch a new app. According to Instagram Head Adam Mosseri, Instagram is mulling a standalone destination dedicated entirely to Reels.
According to The Information, Mosseri remarked on the potential Reels app during a conversation with employees. Instagram did not offer a comment on the report.
Like many Meta features, Reels began as an imitation of a popular product on another platform, but what began as a TikTok copycat has emerged as a legitimate rival for the ByteDance-owned app. Reels was one of the highlights during Meta’s Q4 2024 earnings report thanks to its accelerating reach. According to eMarketer, Reels has accounted for up to 19% of Instagram impressions, driving the platform to U.

Meta‘s earnings from the fourth quarter of 2024 served as a reminder that Mark Zuckerberg’s company is most likely to benefit in the event of a long-term disruption to TikTok’s operations. The tech giant’s stock price briefly reached a price of more than $700 per share after Zuck and co. announced that Meta had exceeded projections over the final quarter of the calendar year.
On a call with analysts on January 29, Zuckerberg forecasted a “big year” for Meta’s properties. Citing innovations like Meta AI, the founder of the company originally known as Facebook predicted that new products would generate a “long-term advantage” powered by industry-leading scale.
A lot of those products will be catered to creators and users who upload and consume Instagram Reels. With TikTok facing the threat of a U.S. ban, Meta has positioned Instagram as the natural successor to the embattled, ByteDance-owned app.

Instagram‘s Trial Reels feature was launched to preview new content, but it has become a trendy tactic for gaining followers. Multiple creators have claimed that they have gained thousands of new followers by using Trial Reels to deliver existing videos to new viewers.
Trial Reels, launched six weeks ago, lets users share videos among non-followers and evaluate them. Based on the test results, the videos can either be uploaded to all followers or discarded.
Top stars like MrBeast use A/B tests to determine the content formats, video titles, and thumbnails that perform the best. With the launch of Trial Reels, Instagram seemed to be catering to those creators.
But instead of using Trial Reels to test new content, many Instagrammers are employing the feature as a growth hacking tool. By feeding it old videos, those creators are gaining fresh traffic from the non-followers who are introduced to their accounts thanks to Trial Reels.

Even though Donald Trump has delayed the U.S. TikTok ban for now, the rest of the social media industry is still eagerly pursuing displaced creators.
Instagram just announced one of the largest incentives thus far: A Breakthrough Bonus that will offer up to $5,000 to new Reels creators. And as the Meta-owned platform looks to expand its user base, it’s also courting some high-profile names with direct cash bonuses that reportedly range as high as $50,000 per month.
Those payouts could be worth “even more” than $50,000, according to The Information. Instagram’s five-digit deals, described as its biggest creator overtures to date, require partners to provide the app with a window of exclusivity.
While top social media stars decide whether to accept Instagram’s offer, other TikTokers can decide whether it’s time for them to break through. The Breakthrough Bonus can be claimed by any TikTok creator who posts...

After all that, TikTok was offline for just hours before restoring service to U.S.-based users and telling them it was “fortunate that President Trump” will apparently work with it to keep it unbanned. But though TikTok wasn’t offline for long, competitor companies are still taking advantage to pitch their own solutions to its services—including Instagram, which announced a CapCut clone called Edits.
While platforms like Snapchat and Triller entreated TikTok’s (temporary) refugee user base by promising them a similar scrolling experience full of videos they would like, Instagram’s approach was–and continues to be–different.
Sure, it almost certainly hopes that this event will cause more people to crosspost their content to its TikTok copycat Reels, so they’ll have multi-platform reach should anything permanent ever happen to TikTok. But its main strategy seems to be appealing to content creators who use CapCut.

Instagram has unveiled a new app.
The social media platform revealed Edits, a new video creation app by Instagram available for pre-order as of Sunday (January 19) in the iOS App Store, and coming to Android soon.
“Today we’re announcing a new app called ‘Edits’ for those of you who are passionate about making videos on your phone. There’s a lot going on right now, but no matter what happens, it’s our job to provide the best possible tools for creators,” the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, explained.

Threads is looking to keep up with its competition by instituting a change that will give its users more control over the content they see. In a post on the Meta-owned X rival, Instagram Head Adam Mosseri announced that Threads is “rebalancing ranking to prioritize content from people you follow.”
Initially, the Threads recommendation engine operated similarly to the current Instagram algorithm by promoting posts from accounts users don’t follow. In theory, that organizational heuristic encouraged the organic discovery of relevant content.
The focus on discovery has worked wonders for TikTok, but one of Threads’ more direct competitors has flourished by moving away from that approach. Bluesky, the decentralized X alternative initially backed by ex-Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, has won over users by granting them more control over the algorithms that dictate their feeds. Instagram seems keenly aware that as a platform built on user-generated content, it relies upon the creators of that content to keep its business going. Its messaging has consistently identified creators as its central driving force, and earlier this year, it said, “We want to make sure every creator feels empowered to succeed on Instagram.”
But that messaging is a bit at odds with a new Threads post from Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri.
According to him, Instagram is maximizing its data storage potential and minimizing the costs of that storage by degrading the quality of videos posted by creators it doesn’t think bring enough views.
“We bias to higher quality (more Cpu intensive encoding and more expensive storage for bigger files) for creators who drive more views,” he wrote Oct. 27. He added that the system isn’t set to “a binary threshold, but rather a sliding scale.”

In a major change, Meta’s Instagram is launching a new experience specifically for teenage users, placing a number of restrictions and limits on how they use the app, and giving parents more control, in a bid to create a healthier environment for users.
“They’re an automatic set of protections for teens that try to proactively address the top concerns that we’ve heard from parents about teens online,” Instagram head Adam Mosseri said on Good Morning America Tuesday. “Things like who can contact them, what content they see and how much time they spend on their device … all without requiring any involvement from the parent.”
All teenagers will automatically be placed into teen accounts, and users under 16 will need a parent’s permission to change any settings. Meta is also developing technology to detect if a user has lied about their age, and will shift them into teen...

Creators can look at dozens of different metrics to analyze the performance of their content, but Instagram is putting its focus on a classic internet stat: The humble view. The Meta-owned hub has announced a policy shift that will install “views” as the primary measurement metric across all formats.
Rather than using different statistics to track activity on formats like Reels, photo uploads, and Stories, Instagram will record one view every time a piece of content starts to play or appears on a user’s screen. “Views will ensure you have the same metric across Instagram and help you better understand how your content is performing, regardless of its format,” reads a post published on Instagram’s Creators hub.
The change will roll out in the “coming weeks.” Though the shift to views only applies to Instagram, Meta has spent the past few months promoting that particular metric across its platforms.

TikTok‘s new app resembles old-school Instagram. The ByteDance-owned platform has quietly launched Whee, a new app that lets users share photos among close friends.
Whee has not yet received an official launch, but Artem Russakovskii — the founder of tech outlet Android Police — noticed the app and posted about it on X. Russakovskii noted that Whee is live in “over a dozen countries,” including Australia, Turkey, Thailand, and Pakistan.
The United States, however, is not on that list. For now, Americans who are curious about the new app will need to find other means to access it.

Adam Mosseri is getting some face time with creators. The Instagram Head sits down with some of his platform’s most popular community members in Creator Pov, an interview series that kicked off on May 14.
In each episode of Creator Pov, Mosseri and a guest discuss pertinent issues that affect Instagram users. The first creator to find herself in Mosseri’s spotlight is comedian Ezee, who reaches more than two million followers on her personal Insta page. Her wide-ranging conversation with Mosseri is available across ten segments on the @creators hub, which functions as “a creator’s guide to Instagram…by Instagram.”
Subjects covered by Ezee and Mosseri include the comedian’s unusually positive comment section, her love for Kai Cenat, and the different formats available to Instagram creators. As Mosseri and Ezee weighed the relative value of photos and videos, Mosseri took a moment to remind viewers why they...

Meta is looking to improve creator and brand experiences on its platform by investing in AI. The parent company of Facebook and Instagram used its NewFronts pitch to highlight an array of upcoming AI-driven tools that will enhance Instagram’s Creator Marketplace and the cross-platform Reels format.
The Instagram Creator Marketplace helps brands find the right partners for their influencer marketing campaigns. That matchamking service is getting a new recommendation engine powered by machine learning insights. By relying on those insights, brands will be able to find creators who meet specific campaign goals. The available sorting categories include audience similarity and topic relativity.
Meta is expanding its suite of AI tools after investing heavily in that technology over the past year. Facebook turned heads when it debuted AI companions inspired by celebrities like MrBeast. Months later, Instagram began piloting a program that will turn creators into AI chatbots.

Meta has kicked off the week with a pair of announcements that should make its creator community happy. On the Instagram side of the tech company, a new ranking algorithm will surface more original content in user feeds. Meanwhile, on Threads, a new bonus program will open up a new revenue stream for creators.
Instagram’s attempt to promote original posts in its feed has been a years-long effort; in 2022, the factors that inform its ranking algorithm changed to depreciate reposts and content aggregators. The man who announced that update, Instagram Head Adam Mosseri, returned to his social channels on April 30 to reveal his platform’s latest adjustments.
Mosseri explained that Instagram will remove reposted content from its feed by replacing those reuploads with the original videos. The resulting “Direct Replace” posts will include tags that direct viewers to the original creator’s account. Serial aggregators who regularly repost “unoriginal...

TikTok is preparing to add some still images to its platform. Some users have received a message that alludes to TikTok Notes, an app that appears to be TikTok’s answer to Og Instagram and its emphasis on photos.
Several social media posts have shared TikTok’s message related to its Notes app. “TikTok Notes, a new app for photo posts, is coming soon,” reads the post. “Your existing and future public TikTok photo posts will be shown on TikTok Notes.”
TikTok has experimented with different types of photo posts for years. While Instagram is playing around with temporary creator monetization programs and its head Adam Mosseri has told users it “couldn’t afford” to continue paying them performance bonuses for their Reels, it’s been raking in more ad revenue per year than YouTube.
According to a new court filing, Instagram brought in $32.4 billion worth of ad revenue in 2021, Business Insider reports.
That same year, YouTube brought in $28.8 billion–and passed a large portion of that revenue on to creators, who make 55% of revenue for ads run on their long-form videos.
The $32.4 billion Instagram generated accounted for 27% of Meta’s total 2021 revenue, across all its platforms and products.
Also in 2021, Meta proposed the Reels Play bonus program as part of what it said was a $1 billion commitment to helping creators build sustainable businesses. But it shut the bonus program down in 2023, and now is giving out intermittent seasonal bonuses, like its current “spring bonus,...

In March 2023, Instagram shut down its Reels Play bonus program, eliminating one of the biggest sources of revenue for creators posting videos to its TikTok competitor Reels.
At the time, Instagram parent Meta said monetization on the platform was “evolving,” and that it believed “other monetization products are scaling more quickly and proving more sustainable over the long term.”
Now, over a year later, it’s “testing a spring bonus, which rewards creators for sharing their reels, carousels and single image posts,” an Instagram spokesperson told Mashable.
Instagram has flirted with temporary monetization a few other times in recent months: most recently, it offered a “holiday bonus” in Q4 2023 and a “New Year’s bonus” in the first part of 2024 that similarly gave cash payouts to creators whose content met engagement thresholds.

Oscar week is finally here! Ask anyone who has been in the thick of awards season and they’ll likely let out a huge sigh followed by exasperated admission that this has been one of the most hectic runs in recent memory. The condensed calendar, forced by last year’s dual strikes, could translate to more lively bashes, however, as there’s light at the end of the tunnel with Sunday’s Oscars. That can only mean that champagne is currently popping at A-list bashes across Los Angeles, and The Hollywood Reporter is on the scene everywhere from Vanity Fair and Elton John to MPTF’s Night Before. See below for the roundup of all the red carpet action.

Since launching its Shorts format in 2020, YouTube has challenged TikTok‘s supremacy in the vertical video world. The decision to embrace short-form content has done wonders for YouTube’s viewership, but that choice may have come with some consequences. According to a report from The Financial Times, multiple YouTube execs are concerned that Shorts viewership may be cannibalizing the platform’s long-form traffic.
The report cites “senior staff at YouTube,” who have held meetings to discuss troubling viewership trends across long-form videos. The execs are worried that YouTube’s signature format — which defined it during its first 15 years of existence — could be “dying out.”
In ranking of the 100 most-watched YouTube channels of August 2023, nearly three-quarters of the listed channels operate primarily on Shorts, with little traffic coming to their long-form content. San Francisco, Aug 31 (Ians) Meta-owned Instagram is reportedly working on a longer version of Reels, which will let users record up to 10 minutes of videos.
Mobile developer and leaker Alessandro Paluzzi shared the development on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, sharing screenshots of two side-by-side Reels pages, one to record for three minutes and another to record for 10 minutes, reports The Verge.
“#Instagram is working on the ability to create #Reels up to 10 minutes long,” he said.
However, Meta has not confirmed plans to extend Reels yet, the report said.
By increasing Reels’ length to 10 minutes, it moves closer to YouTube videos, but not as far as short-term video rival TikTok, which already offers more time to record videos.
TikTok offers up to 10 minutes of longer video content for free users with an additional paid tier for up to 20 minutes, allowing fans to watch more content from their favourite creators.

New Delhi, Aug 30 (Ians) Meta-owned Instagram is testing a new feature that will allow creators to share notable fan comments to their Stories, such as comments on their posts or Reels.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri stated in a post on the ‘Ig updates’ channel that the company wants to make it easier for creators to highlight interesting comments.
“We’re testing the ability for public accounts to share comments from any public feed post or Reels to their stories. The idea is to help creators highlight important or interesting comments from fellow creators or fans,” he said.
Creators who participate in this test can highlight a comment by swiping it and tapping the “Add to story icon”. In the Stories feed, the comment will appear alongside the original post.
However, Mosseri did not provide any information about the feature’s public rollout or the size of the test.

San Francisco, Aug 21 (Ians) Meta will reportedly release the web version of Threads this week.Since Threads was launched, a web version has frustratingly been missing, reports The Verge.
Earlier this month, Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg had said the company would bring the web version in “the next few weeks.”
However, the sources told The Wall Street Journal that the feature’s “launch plans aren’t final and could change.”
Last week, Instagram head Adam Mosseri posted on Threads that the company had been testing an early web version “internally for a week or two”, but it still “needs some work” before wide release.
Also, Mosseri had announced a new “Reposts” tab on profiles and reposts to the Following feed.
“Two small updates for Threads that are worth mentioning: we’re rolling out a new Reposts tab on your profile so you can see all the threads you reposted in one place.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri said on his broadcast channel on Friday that “we haven’t started testing anything publicly yet, but we’re working on the ability to create audio notes to share with your friends”.
Meta had first introduced ‘Notes’ on Instagram in December last year which helped users to share their thoughts and see what their friends are up to.
When Meta introduced Notes, it had said that this feature allows users to create short posts of up to 60 characters using just text and emojis.

It’s only been a few months since Meta laid off 11,000 employees, but the tech giant is showing signs of progress. It beat Wall Street projections during Q2 2023, and one of the highlights of its quarter was the growth of Reels. According to the most recent data, Meta’s answer to TikTok gets 200 billion daily views across Facebook and Instagram.
That figure represents a marked increase over last October, when Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg said that Reels had reached 140 billion daily views. During Meta’s Q2 2023 earnings call, Zuckerberg cheered the financial returns Reels have generated. He put the format’s “annual revenue run rate” — i.e. the projection of its yearly revenue — at $10 billion.
Meta’s Reels earnings rival those of TikTok. According to Insider Intelligence, the latter video service pulled in $9.9 billion of revenue in 2022. The same firm projected that TikTok will reach $13.2 billion in ad revenue this year.

Instagram Subscriptions is going global. The monetization feature, which resembles similarly-named products on platforms like Twitch, has come to ten additional countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
As subscriptions have emerged as a coveted revenue stream for creators, Instagram has slowly built up its own version of the feature. It started testing Subscriptions in 2022, just a few months after Meta leader Mark Zuckerberg promised to deliver $1 billion of payouts to creators. By July of that year, “tens of thousands of creators here in the U.S.” gained access to Subscriptions, according to Instagram head Adam Mosseri.
As the calendar turned over to 2023, Instagram continued to widen its Subscriptions rollout. That expansion is continuing unabated. “After seeing the value that subscriptions can offer to creators in the US, we’re expanding access to the feature to more creators around the world,” reads an introductory blog post.

San Francisco, July 18 (Ians) Following Instagram head Adam Mosseri’s announcement to implement rate limits on Threads, Twitter-owner Elon Musk reacted to the decision and called it a copycat .Mosseri posted on Threads, “Spam attacks have picked up so we’re going to have to get tighter on things like rate limits, which is going to mean more unintentionally limiting active people (false positives). Threads is making a big change as it continues to grow exponentially as an alternative to Twitter. Instagram boss Adam Mosseri took to the micro-blogging platform to announce that they would be implementing rate limits to combat bots.
“Spam attacks have picked up so we’re going to have to get tighter on things like rate limits, which is going to mean more unintentionally limiting active people (false positives),” Mosseri posted on Threads. “If you get caught up those protections let us know.”
Rate limits are what Elon Musk implemented at the beginning of July “to address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation.” At the time, Musk said the rate limits were only temporary at the extreme levels, but since then he has eased off and allowed users to view more tweets a day, particularly those users that are subscribed to Twitter Blue and “verified.”

Instagram sure launched Threads at an opportune time, but its quickness came at the cost of several features. In its first five days, more than 100 million people had already downloaded and signed up for Threads. While it's undoubtedly off to a strong start, users have been quick to point out that the app is lacking some essential features, like the option to edit images and send direct messages.
Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, has confirmed that his team is working on adding many of the features early users have been asking for. Features like a following feed, expanded search options, and even an edit button should arrive soon, as Mosseri mentioned in a Threads post. But the app will need more than just that to compete with the Twitter experience. Here are some features users hope to see on Threads in the near future.

Millions of users have joined Threads to experience the hot new microblogging platform, but the big question is: does it have a character limit? Instagram Threads has recently become the fastest app to cross 100 million users, doing so within just five days of launch. Before this, OpenAI's ChatGPT held the record for surpassing 100 million users within two months. This is a testament to the app's popularity among users.
There's a character limit on Instagram's Threads, and it's 500 characters, including blank spaces and web links. If users need more than that, they can consider breaking up the text into multiple threads. In the 'New Thread' screen, users will see the option 'Add to thread' beneath their initial text, so they can create a string of posts. Other popular microblogging platforms, like Tumblr and Pinterest, also have a 500-character limit.

Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino is throwing a little shade at Threads after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced his platform had crossed 100 million signups in less than a week.
“Don’t want to leave you hanging by a thread… but Twitter, you really outdid yourselves! Last week we had our largest usage day since February. There’s only One Twitter. You know it. I know it,” Yaccarino tweeted.
Yaccarino’s message came after Zuckerberg shared the news that Threads reached the milestone this past weekend adding without heavy spending on advertising.
“That’s mostly organic demand and we haven’t even turned on many promotions yet. Can’t believe it’s only been 5 days,” Zuckerberg posted.

San Francisco, July 10 (Ians) Meta’s Twitter rival, Threads, has finally crossed 100 million user sign-ups within a week of its launch, while Twitter is experiencing a decline in traffic.

San Francisco, July 9 (Ians) Meta-owned Instagram is reportedly testing the Live Activities feature for its iOS app.
As noted by 9to5Mac reader Fernando Moretto, the Instagram app is now showing Live Activities when users close the app while uploading a new photo or video.
This eliminates the need to open the Instagram app again-and-again to make sure the upload is completed.
Instagram’s Live Activities work on both Lock Screen and Dynamic Island.
It seems that this feature is currently available to a really small number of users, as the company is testing it before rolling it out widely.
Meanwhile, last month, Instagram head Adam Mosseri had announced that the social networking platform was rolling out the ability to download Reels shared by public accounts to the camera roll, in the US.
“Worth mentioning, Reels shared by private accounts can’t be downloaded and public accounts can turn off the...

Meta launched Threads this week which is their response to Twitter and in many ways both platforms want to host digital town squares. However, Instagram boss Adam Mosseri is clearing things up and saying that the social network will not push topics about politics and hard news.
In the past few years, Meta has made a U-turn on pushing politics and hard news on their social networks, which was something pointed out being that Twitter has embraced the political talk and encourages it.
“The goal isn’t to replace Twitter,” Mosseri shared on Threads. “The goal is to create a public square for communities on Instagram that never really embraced Twitter and for communities on Twitter (and other platforms) that are interested in a less angry place for conversations, but not all of Twitter.”
Mosseri acknowledges that politics and hard news will inevitably show up on the platform “but we...

New Delhi, July 8 (Ians) Instagram head Adam Mosseri has clarified that Meta does not want to replace Twitter but create a public square for communities on Instagram that never really embraced Twitter and for communities on Elon Musk-run platform “that are interested in a less angry place for conversations, but not all of Twitter”.
He said that the platform is not going to just focus on breaking news and world events.
“Politics and hard news are inevitably going to show up on Threads — they have on Instagram as well to some extent — but we’re not going to do anything to encourage those verticals,” he posted on Threads.
In a reply to a question from The Verge’s Alex Heath, Mosseri said that politics and hard news are important and he does not want to imply otherwise.
