‘The Fire Inside’ Review: Rachel Morrison’s Boxing Drama Isn’t One for Cheap Shots
Image
Rachel Morrison’s feature directorial debut, The Fire Inside, uses the framework of a traditional boxing drama without ever being constrained by it. Telling the true story of trailblazing boxer Claressa “T-Rex” Shield, it has the fundamentals of the genre down pat, from the inspiring speeches to the robust training montages to the exhilarating fights scenes. But the nuanced script, keen-eyed direction, and a pair of powerhouse lead performances elevate the film into something richer, realer, and more moving.

We first meet Claressa (Jazmin Headley) as a stringy young kid from Flint, Michigan, walking to the local gym, where she silently stares down the boys until someone agrees to train her. That someone is Jason Crutchfield (Brian Tyree Henry), an affable ex-boxer who could’ve been a contender back in the day and now trains the next generation of potential champions. After putting Claressa through her paces, Jason confesses to his wife,...

Jake Paul Joins ‘Undisputed’ Boxing Video Game, While Mike Tyson Does Not
Image
Jake Paul will soon be a playable character in Undisputed, the boxing video game.

The game, released in October from Steel City Interactive and available for Xbox, PS5 and PC, features the likeness of over 70 real-world fighters, both male and female, as well as 60 different punches and a secondary roster of trainers, cutmen and managers.

Offered as part of a downloadable content package available Dec. 12, the former YouTuber and Hollywood Reporter cover star, 27, will be available to spar in a virtual ring in three different outfits.

Paul and Mike Tyson’s megahyped Nov. 15 match on Netflix drew 108 million viewers worldwide, equivalent to one in five subscriber households. The bout crashed Netflix servers, leading to pending lawsuits from angry customers. Paul beat Tyson, 58, via unanimous decision after all three judges ruled in his favor with scores of 80-72, 79-73 and 79-73.

“This isn’t just about being in a video game...

Was Mike Tyson’s Life Saved By Psychedelic Mushrooms?
Image
Did psychedelics save Mike Tyson? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

The heavyweight champ Mike Tyson, who once knocked out grown men in seconds, says psilocybin turned him from a self-destructive trainwreck into someone who finally feels at peace.

“Everyone thought I was crazy—I bit this guy’s ear off!” Tyson quipped, throwing back to his wild 1997 brawl with Evander Holyfield. “Once I got introduced to the shrooms… my whole life changed.”

At his peak, Tyson was untouchable in the ring. But behind the curtain? He was fighting a far scarier opponent—himself. The voice in his head was brutal, pushing him to the brink of suicide. Enter psychedelics. Tyson didn’t just dabble; he dove in. And the shift was immediate. “To think where I was—almost suicidal—to this now,” he said. “Isn’t life a trip, man?”

Is Mike Tyson The Most Overrated Boxer Ever?
Image
Is Mike Tyson overrated? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Remember that Saturday when we watched the whole thing unfold? When Roy Jones Jr. stepped into the ring against Mike Tyson? Hall of Fame stuff. First, let’s talk about Jones Jr. He fought 50 times between 1989 and 2014, and like, Never came close to losing. Sure, there was one “oops” moment—a disqualification for hitting an opponent when they were down—but honestly? His opponent was already wrecked, so it was a technicality at best. Jones was a freak of nature.

Jones made history by winning titles in four weight classes: middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight. Only one other guy, Bob Fitzsimmons, did that in 1in3.

Tyson’s reign was all about speed and power. But here’s the thing—he had no backup plan. He folded if he couldn’t land a flurry of punches in the first few rounds. Exhibit...

60 Million Homes Saw Netflix Fail for Tyson vs. Paul
Image
Friday night’s Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul boxing match was both a triumph and a tragedy for Netflix. The fight saw 60 million households tuning in for the live stream — and millions more tried to, probably.

Netflix’s reach for its live-streaming ambitions still exceed its grasp. Some attempts (the Tom Brady roast!) saw success while others (the “Love Is Blind” reunion special) did not; that Netflix pro-am golf tournament was just lame. And on Friday night, Netflix Live’s biggest moment to date, the streamer’s tech, talent, and general approach let users down.

The biggest issue of Tyson vs. Paul was, of course, a bandwidth supply that simply could not keep up with demand. Kind of a humblebrag, right? We have so many members who tried to watch our marquee event that it blew up our best-in-class servers. You and I were pissed; NFL executives, who have entrusted...

Mike Tyson Is “Grateful” He Got In The Ring “One Last Time” After He “Almost Died” This Year
Image
Although Mike Tyson suffered defeat at the hands of Jake Paul during Friday’s fight, he feels like a champ for getting back in the ring.

The former undisputed world heavyweight champion explained why he’s “grateful” he participated in the boxing match, which aired live on Netflix with Most Valuable Promotions (Mvp), after he suffered an ulcer flare-up in May that postponed the event.

“This is one of those situations when you lost but still won. I’m grateful for last night. No regrets to get in ring one last time,” the 58-year-old wrote on X. “I almost died in June. Had 8 blood transfusions. Lost half my blood and 25 lbs in hospital and had to fight to get healthy to fight so I won.

“To have my children see me stand toe to toe and finish 8 rounds with a talented fighter half my age in front of a packed...

Friday’s match between Tyson and Paul, which was prefaced by Katie Taylor Vs. Amanda Serrano 2, was the biggest boxing gate outside of Las Vegas in US history, surpassing $17.8 million. More than 70,000 were in attendance at the match.

“Breaking records like this is exactly what Mvp was built to do—bring the biggest, most electrifying events to fans worldwide,” said Mvp co-founder Nakisa Bidarian. “Jake Paul, Amanda Serrano and Mvp are redefining what’s possible in combat sports, and we’re thrilled to partner with Netflix to make history at AT&T Stadium.

Image
Netflix’s first live sports event ended with a bang, as the boxing match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson went all eight rounds, with Paul coming out victorious via unanimous decision.

Immediately after the fight, Paul was humble about his victory, saying, “First and foremost, Mike Tyson … it’s such an honor. Let’s give it up for Mike, he’s a legend. He’s the greatest to ever do it. He’s the Goat. I look up to him, I’m inspired by him, and we wouldn’t be here today without him.”

Tyson spoke about his performance, saying, “I didn’t prove nothing to anybody, only to myself.” He also gave props to Paul as an athlete, saying, “He’s a very good fighter.”

Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson Fight Rules, Regulations & Number Of Rounds Explained
Image
Netflix's first live sporting event, the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson boxing match, has some unique rules and regulations that might require explanation. The Paul vs. Tyson fight is a major match for both boxers. Jake Paul went from YouTuber to pro boxer, so his fight with Tyson should make him a notable name in the sport. Meanwhile, Mike Tyson came out of retirement to fight Paul, and it will be his first professional boxing match since he retired in 2005. Tyson did have an exhibition match in 2020 against Roy Jones Jr., but his fight with Jake Paul is considered professional.

Tyson's fight against Paul will not only be his first professional boxing match in nearly 20 years, it will also give him a chance to end his career on a higher note than he previously did. Tyson's last professional fight against heavyweight Kevin McBride ended in a resounding defeat. It was considered a huge upset,...

The boxing match between Paul and Tyson will take place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on November 15, 2024, and will be streamed globally on Netflix. Netflix's preview series, Countdown: Paul Vs Tyson, has aired, prefacing its November 15 live coverage of Jake Paul's boxing match with Mike Tyson. It's a contest that has divided opinion not only in boxing circles but also in the public forum. Iron Mike, once the self-styled "baddest man in boxing," is now 58, while Paul, the world-famous YouTuber and latter-day boxer, is 27. The two men clash at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, after the fight's original date of July 20 was called off when Tyson suffered a health scare and needed medical attention on a flight from Miami to Los Angeles.

Donnie Yen Talks Mike Tyson's Death Punch and Defying Chinese Stereotypes in Movies
Image
Donnie Yen recently appeared at the Shanghai International Film Festival masterclass and reminisced about his long and illustrious career. Donnie Yen also served as the ambassador for the festival's "Belt and Road Film Week" sidebar and showcased his latest film Raging Fire. The film is directed by Benny Chan, who unfortunately passed away last August after a bout with nasopharyngeal cancer. While in the masterclass, Yen recalled the real danger he felt while filming Ip Man 3 with former heavyweight boxing champ Mike Tyson.

The two of them starred together in the third film of the famous Ip Man franchise in 2016, with Yen reprising his role as the Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man. Tyson played a corrupt property developer who takes an interest in the school of Ip Man's son. Being a fan of Tyson himself and taking note of his reputation, Yen had to be very careful while filming...

Logan Paul Says He Could Beat Mike Tyson in a Fight
Image
Logan Paul doesn't feel Mike Tyson would pose any threat to him in a boxing match if the two were to ever meet in the ring. Earlier this month, Paul competed in an exhibition match against undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. While there have been some allegations made over the authenticity of the fight, many viewers were impressed with Paul for managing to last all eight rounds with Mayweather. It had previously been widely speculated that Paul would be knocked out pretty early into the fight.

It's looking like going the distance with Mayweather has given Paul another jolt of confidence, as he's since taken aim at another major boxing star from the past. On his Impaulsive podcast, Logan spoke with his brother Jake Paul about wanting more fights after the Mayweather exhibition. That's when Logan, whose record as a pro boxer is still technically 0-1, dismissed a potential fight with Mike Tyson,...

Jake Paul Signs Multi-Fight Deal with Showtime Boxing
Image
After recently generating some controversy with boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr, Jake Paul has just signed his own multi-fight deal with Showtime Boxing. Next month, Jake's older brother Logan will be fighting Mayweather in a pay-per-view exhibition match for Fanmio and Showtime. It's not clear yet how much money Logan will be raking in from that fight, but if all goes well, he's expecting to score at least $20 million.

Now, Jake has just secured a rather hefty payday for himself, and while we don't know numbers, we can presume his new multi-fight deal with Showtime is lucrative. It's also unclear when his first fight with Showtime Boxing will take place, but both sides are in advanced talks about locking down his first opponent, along with a date and location. The contract also means Paul's relationship with Triller is over following his fight against Ben Askren for the company in April.

Mike Tyson Slams Hulu Series Based on His Life: ‘Couldn’t Be More Inappropriate or Tone Deaf’
Image
Mike Tyson has come out strongly against the planned Hulu series based on his life, “Iron Mike.”

The series, which was announced earlier on Thursday, has been given an eight-episode order at the streamer and is said to explore Tyson’s life and career in and out of the ring.

“Hulu’s announcement to do an unauthorized mini-series of the Tyson story without compensation, although unfortunate, isn’t surprising,” Tyson posted on Instagram. “This announcement on the heels of social disparities in our country is a prime example of how Hulu’s corporate greed led to this tone-deaf cultural misappropriation of the Tyson life story. To make this announcement during Black History Month only confirms Hulu’s concern for dollars over respect for black story rights. Hollywood needs to be more sensitive to black experiences especially after all that has transpired in 2020. The real Mike Tyson authorized story is in...

Jake Paul came out of his last fight looking very strong after knocking Nate Robinson out cold, and his older brother Logan could be next. First finding fame as YouTube stars, both Paul brothers have since launched their own respective careers as professional boxers. Jake would defeat Deji Olatunji by Tko in an amateur boxing match in 2018 before going pro in 2020, also winning his first sanctioned match against fellow YouTuber AnEsonGib. His recent victory over Robinson continues the younger Paul sibling's undefeated streak.

After the Robinson fight, Jake called out his older brother along with former UFC fighter Conor McGregor as potential opponents for him to take on next. Now that some time has passed, Jake isn't so sure he still wants to fight Logan Paul, admitting to TMZ that he's not so sure he'd still be up for the fight.

Mike Tyson Attacked by Angry Fan Immediately After Roy Jones Jr. Fight
Image
Mike Tyson's return fight against Roy Jones Jr. over the weekend may have ended in a draw, but "Iron" Mike still came very close to knocking someone out that night during an altercation after the bout. TMZ Sports reports that Tyson was leaving the Staples Center after the show when he was approached by a small group of fans asking for autographs. When Tyson obliged by walking over to interact with the group, an unidentified man in the crowd took the opportunity to confront him.

According to sources familiar with the situation, the man yelled at Mike Tyson, asking the boxer why he wouldn't fight him. Sort of joking but probably not really, Tyson responded that a fight with the guy "wouldn't end well" for him. Unwilling to accept a no, the man reportedly swung at Mike before reaching into his waistband, appearing as if he was preparing to pull out a weapon.
