Keg was born John James Keggins (the Anglicized form of Old Gaelic "MacAodhagain") on October 14, 1985 in Dublin, Ireland. He is the youngest of three children and his parents are Colm and Kristy Keggins, an Adare laborer and seamstress, respectively. He received his moniker as a shortening of his last name and a term of endearment by his friends and co-workers. Shortly after his secondary education, Keg began playing football for the Irish American Football League for several years with the Belfast Trojans until a leg injury sidelined his career.

After a year and a half of intense rehabilitation, he decided to pursue a career in professional wrestling. Taking his childhood nickname, he developed a ne'er-do-well character that spent more time in the pub than in the ring. This endeared him to some of the young adults, but infuriated the older audience who felt it was disrespectful to the sport. He continued honing his career and soon wrestled in multiple regional and international wrestling corporations before getting his big break in Japan. He toured with New Japan Pro Wrestling, All Japan Pro Wrestling, DDT, and Big Japan Pro Wrestling for many years. While he hasn't become a big star in America and Canada, he has worked for dozens of companies in those countries and continues to do so to this day.

A noted fan of low budget "B movies", he quickly latched onto Kickstarter backed films where he could not only help support low budget films, but also add to his resume as an associate producer or executive producer by financially backing these films on Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and GoFundMe. He continues to invest in films and documentaries when possible, merging his love of both his wrestling career, the sports industry, and a fanatical passion for film.
