The Locarno Film Festival‘s Open Doors program, which supports filmmakers from underrepresented regions of the world, has unveiled a new team for its next four-year mission: To focus on supporting and elevating African cinema.
The co-production and talent develpment initiative, previously focused on Latin America and the Caribbean, will turn its attention to the African continent for the next four years, teaming up with pan-African film studio collective Yetu (Un)Limited to help strengthen African cinemas’ ecosystem locally and boost the presence of African filmmakers internationally.

One of the nice surprises at the Film by the Sea Festival in Vlissingen was the unexpected warm weather, a nice little hot after-Summer. A less nice surprise was that some of the venues at the festival did not have a properly functioning air-conditioning. When I saw Burkinabé filmmaker Apolline Traoré's Sahel-based drama Sira, this led to an uncomfortable level of immersion for me, as the titular heroine of that film battles to stay alive in a very hostile hot desert. At the start of Sira we follow a caravan travelling through the Sahel desert, on its way to a wedding. Sira, the daughter of the Muslim people's leader is about to marry into a high-ranked family of Christian farmers, a liaison which is frowned...

Tunisian director Youssef Chebbi’s investigative thriller Ashkal has won the top prize at the Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (Fespaco). Winners have been announced at the 73rd Berlin Film Festival, with On the Adamant by Nicolas Philibert scooping the coveted Golden Bear prize as the best film of the festival’s International Competition. The film chronicles a unique day-care center in the heart of Paris that welcomes adults suffering from mental disorders, offering the kind of care that grounds them in time and space and helps them to recover or keep up their spirits.
Introducing the film, jury head Kristen Stewart said the pic is “masterfully crafted” and acts as “cinematic proof of the vital necessity of human expression.”
Other winners in the International Competition included Philippe Garrel, who picked up the Silver Bear for Best Director for his latest pic Le grand chariot (The Plough). Garrel dedicated the award to the late filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard.

The film’s director, Apolline Traoré, was born in Burkina Faso and educated in the US before returning to the country of her birth and working with Idrissa Ouédraogo. Borders is her third feature, a road movie about four very different women travelling across beautifully evoked landscapes from Senegal to Nigeria, having melodramatic, shocking or comic episodes on the hot and dusty road.

The lineup for the 23rd annual Urbanworld Film Festival was announced Friday, with Tony-award winning broadway actor Cynthia Erivo and Emmy award-winning director Roger Ross Williams making appearances at the event, which is geared towards representing and celebrating diverse, international voices in film, music videos, television, screenplays and shorts.
Director and co-writer Kasi Lemmons will open the festival Sept 18 with her Focus Features biopic “Harriet,” following the influential life of abolitionist Harriet Tubman who led slaves to freedom through the Underground Railroad. Following the screening, star Erivo, Lemmons and executive producers Debra Martin Chase and Daniela Taplin Lundberg will discuss the film with CBS This Morning Saturday’s Michelle Miller moderating. Lemmons is this year’s festival ambassador.
